Long ago, before the great lion Aslan bounded onto bookshelves, C. S. Lewis wrote a science fiction novel set on mythological Mars. From there, the sequel carried Dr. Elwin Ransom by angels to the sister planet Venus. And from there … the Ransom/Cosmic/Space Trilogy descended to the dull world of corrupt college boards, inner-ring politics, and a secret technocracy bent on world domination with the aid of mad science and demons and everything. Eighty years after That Hideous Strength, we explore why C. S. Lewis created this earthbound and weird and wonderful pre-political supernatural thriller. Episode sponsors Sons of Day and Night by Mariposa Aristeo A Faie Tale by Vince Mancuso Above the Circle of Earth by E. Stephen Burnett Mission update New at Lorehaven: Josiah DeGraaf's Sun Eater series article Subscribe free to get updates and join the Lorehaven Guild That hideously obscure front cover image. 1. The temptations to wield inner rings The Ransom Trilogy really includes all three fantastical genres. It starts with sci-fi, continues to fantasy, ends in supernatural. Stephen would have appreciated knowing this before this book! Because that fact, plus the cover, will affect your expectations. More than the other two, Hideous Strength feels a weird hybrid. For instance, it begins on Earth and feels “grown-up,” even dull. Who is Mark Studdock and Jane? Why do we care about them? And where is Dr. Ransom and the creatures of books 1 and 2? But here Lewis is addressing some deep and personal enemies. One of them is the “inner ring” villain he writes about elsewhere. Call this “the room where it happens,” that seat of power. Right now some conspiracists claim to “expose” secret inner rings. Yet more often they're trying to make new “rings” themselves. This “normal,” subtle threat marks the first real evil of the story. Mark, a social-climbing sociologist, craves to reach this influence. Then he gets there … and discovers it's run by the greater threat. 2. A not-so-N.I.C.E. secular technocracy Enter the National Institute for Co-ordinated Experiments. It's a social movement, an actual autocratic state bent on power. They're all about science, social engineering, efficiency, machines. These theorists take the worst of evil ideologies and mix them up. And for Lewis, this represents the worst corruptions of academia. They destroy natural land like Saruman. Hijack history like IngSoc. And they take over newspapers in plain sight like any petty tyrant. Some have different aims/ideas, such as a truly scary revelation about what exactly has gone wrong with the sterility of the Moon. Others are so poisoned by elitism that they “naturally” fall into evil. That's why we call this a pre-political story. Yes, it's about politics and has overlapping theme, but is about the ideas beneath this. N.I.C.E.'s goal: the subjugation of the human race to macrobes. From here, Lewis finally explains the recurring visions of Jane Studdock (revealing the conspiracy) and a holy resistance order. And, lest there be any doubt, we soon learn the worst threat of all. 3. Devils vs. power to demolish strongholds At last, Dr. Ransom enters the story, leading a small diverse group. He's recruited Christian fellow academics, sure, but also one rather sympathetic skeptic, leading women, and working-class folks. Their enemy is not just flesh and blood, but dark spiritual powers. That's why we call Hideous Strength a true supernatural thriller. Astute readers will discern demonic activity behind the veil. That's no surprise for the author of The Screwtape Letters. Yet the activity is more subtle, in allusion, not overt like Peretti. Ultimately we discern the demons/humans spread their evil ideas in an area Lewis knew very well: the corruption of language. Words, meanings, symbols, translations are vital to this story. And perhaps it's no surprise that the ultimate battle is won not by weapons or even direct intrusions of magic, but by word powers. Clearly the author had in mind a certain Genesis 11 narrative! By the end, one hero utters this divine judgment: “Qui Verbum Dei contempserunt, eis auferetur etiam verbum hominis.” (Kee vehr-boom Deh-ee kon-temp-seh-roont, eh-ees ow-feh-reh-toor eh-tee-ahm vehr-boom ho-mee-nees) Translated: “They that have despised the word of God, from them shall the word of man also be taken away.” These villains “have pulled down Deep Heaven onto their heads.” Holy agents unite from the planets and the past to empower good. Lewis also brings in, quite overtly, his love for medieval cosmology and the planetary influences that are crucial to this universe. And now (with a reread) Stephen has experienced this story with delight like he had hoped, particularly with Lewis's latter head-hopping and fun-poking at the expense of N.I.C.E.'s evildoers. That Hideous Strength ends with startling eucatastrophe and celebration of biblical and based virtues, from cosmic to familial. It's no wonder the story has gained new fans in these similar days. Com station Top question for listeners Do you prefer demonic evil in fiction to be overt or subtle? Next on Fantastical Truth Well, we just talked about the first Chronicle of Narnia … the book! Yet many fans found or rediscovered this series thanks to the Disney-distributed, Walden Media–made film from director Andrew Adamson. Want to feel old? That was two decades ago! So now we shall look back at Narnia's journey to the box office with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which released twenty years ago on Dec. 9, 2005.

Lord of the World was written in 1907 and is considered one of the classics of dystopian literature. The author, Fr. Robert Hugh Benson, was a Catholic convert from Anglicanism who wanted to write a book about the Antichrist. Lord of the World is that book. Malrubius (Chris), from The Sun Eater discord, joins the show to discuss Lord of the World, why it was important to Pope Francis, and how it impacted other science fiction literature. *************************************************************************************************************Follow me on Twitter @AaronIrberSubscribe to my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@imightbelieveinfaeries7563Subscribe to my Substack - for updates on the show, essays, and more!Donate to my Patreon - I Might Believe in Faeries https://www.patreon.com/imightbelieveinfaeriesLike my Facebook page - I Might Believe in FaeriesBattle Of The Creek by Alexander Nakarada | https://www.serpentsoundstudios.comMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comAttribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Logo Art by Linnea Kisby************************************************************************************************************* Get full access to I Might Believe in Faeries at aaronirber.substack.com/subscribe

So few bands remain that were born during the post-MTV, pre-streaming and social media purgatorial zone of the mid-aughts. Woods are still with us. And despite having one significant kink in their curb appeal, they bring twenty years of codeine-dipped freak folk and high-value return to the listener's ears. City Sun Eater in the River of Light is my favorite of their hot dozen.

EPISODE 8: Hal and John resume their investigation, discovering the clues Sheriff Kerrie had dug up about Hope Springs' gruesome history and the shady past of the Hand of God's Mercy. The pieces of the puzzle all begin falling into place – the Black Hand is a cult that has been run by the Macon family for decades, performing necromantic ritual sacrifices in a repeated effort to summon an eldritch being known as The Centre. Their efforts have never taken – until now, due to the volatile power of the Starheart. Their latest sacrifice of Todd Rice, however, seems not to have summoned the intended entity. Due to Rice's otherworldly metahuman abilities, the cult has instead summoned a creature of darkness from beyond the veil of space, something known as a Sun Eater. It begins slowly devouring the light of the Earth's sun, plunging the planet into darkness. In the midst of all this, Hal grapples with his own “fall from grace.” He knows what he has done wrong, and just wants to put things right if he can. He and John are caught between two impossible choices – disobeying the Green Lantern Corps' orders not to intervene, or allowing their planet to suffer the consequences of their inaction. Ultimately they decide to step in and stop the cult of the Black Hand, only to find that their efforts are for naught. The Sun Eater has already been summoned, and it will take an extraordinary amount of light in order to destroy it. In the fight against the cult, Hal's ring is remotely deactivated by the GLC in order to prevent its use. John realizes it's up to him to stop the Sun Eater, but he doesn't know if he has what it takes. Realizing what must be done, Hal decides to take John's ring for himself and fly into space to face the Sun Eater in John's stead. He pours everything he has into the creature, overloading the Sun Eater, the ring, and himself with sheer light and power. As the power disintegrates Hal, he shouts his old oath one final time. On Earth below, John watches as the blackened sky turns dazzling green, and then fades back to a sunlit day. He realizes that Hal has sacrificed himself to save them all. Once again, John is brought to Oa for disciplinary action by the Guardians. However, John has no regrets for his actions, nor does he have any doubts as to Hal Jordan's true character. Grudgingly admitting that John made the proper judgment call, the Guardians reactivate Hal's old ring and pass it on to John. He is left as the sole Green Lantern of Earth, a responsibility that he solemnly accepts. John's final act of the series is to adopt Hal Jordan's old oath as his own – the same oath that he once accused of being “corny,” but now which he understands the true meaning and weight of. END

Welcome to the two hundredth and sixty-sixth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format. Final Night concludes! And the Sun Eater causes the sun to go nova, and everyone dies. End of show. Just kidding! The road to the end of Final Night begins with Mike and Jeff looking at Superman: The Man of Steel #62, which not only focuses on Superman helping the brave workers at the Metropolis power station get said station back on line after the roof collapses but also shows Professor Hamilton viewing the holograms of Jor-El trying to save the population of Krypton during the planet's final days. There's also a sub-plot of Perry and his family heading to the Daily Planet and putting out the next edition despite the power being out and the world potentially coming to an end. Then the boys look at Flash #119, Hitman #8, and Legion of Super-Heroes #86, because those issues seem to take place before the final issue of the main series. Then the rubber meets the road in Final Night #4, where Superman makes the decision to fly the ship that's going to take the thingy to stop the Sun Eater. He doesn't get the chance when Ferro Lad kind of, sort of steals the ship but even his attempts at self-sacrifice fall through when Hal Jordan decides that he is going to be the one to save the day. Finally, the boys chat about the final three crossover issues, which come in the form of Robin #35, Takion #6, and Spectre #47. From Crisis to Crisis - The Married Years (A Superman and Lois Podcast)
(Continuing the march towards the wedding, here is a re-upload of an episode of FCTC's coverage of Final Night! Enjoy!) Welcome to the two hundredth and sixty-fifth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format. Final Night continues! This time out Mike and Jeff continue their coverage of Final Night by looking at the main books and crossovers that came out during Week Three! First up is Action Comics #727, which sees Superman doing a bit of a retro thing by jumping instead of flying. He's not doing it to be cool or old school, though. Nope. His powers continue to fade away as the sun continues to be consumed by the Sun Eater. Bad guys use the chaos to steal several Special Crimes Unit battle suits, which Superman has to deal with as an unnamed man has to make his way through a snow covered Metropolis and learns about the good and bad of humanity. Mike also gives a quick history lesson in the middle of the notes where he probably gets something wrong. Then, in Final Night #3, things go from bad to apocalyptic. Ted Knight, the Golden Age Starman, does some figuring and realizes that the diameter of the sun is off. It turns out that Sun Eater's feeding cycle involves causing the star it is eating to go nova, which is great for the Sun Eater, because it propels it to the next star, but is kind of bad for all life in the system the sun provides light for. Finally, the boys look at the other crossover issues which include Final Night Parallax Emerald Night #1, Superboy #33, Aquaman #26, and Detective Comics #703! From Crisis to Crisis - The Married Years (A Superman and Lois Podcast)
Welcome to the two hundredth and sixty-third episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format. Final Night begins! This time out Mike and Jeff kick off their coverage of Final Night by starting with an issue that bears the Final Night trade dress but has very little to do with the event. Superman #116 features Superman and Professor Hamilton heading to the Fortress to deal with the rapidly failing bottled city but trouble strikes when the Fortress defenses fail to recognize Superman as Kryptonian. Meanwhile, Lori Lemaris is confronted by WGBS and deals with it by jumping off the pier. Oh, and at the end Hamilton and Superman notice that Final Night has started. Then the boys cover the Final Night preview (which was originally a black and white freebie given out at comic shops) before diving into Final Night #1. An alien known as Dusk lands on Earth and is met by Superman, the SCU, and the time lost Legion of Super-Heroes. She warns them that a cosmic entity known as the Sun Eater will soon arrive in their solar system to…well, eat the sun…it's right there in the name…and just like that it arrives. The heroes band together to try and stop it but their efforts fail, causing the Sun Eater to latch on to the sun and temperatures on Earth to plummet. As the sky turns dark, Lex Luthor believes it is time to return to Metropolis. After that, Mike and Jeff briefly discuss Power of Shazam #20, Green Lantern #80, and Sovereign Seven #16. Hard to believe it's been a decade since Job For A Cowboy graced us with Sun Eater yet here we are on the eve of Moon Healer (Metal Blade) and we couldn't be more stoked for it if we tried. This band occupies a special spot for most of here on staff as they exemplify our varied tastes in death metal and all things extreme. With this album that statement couldn't be more true as it is wildly all over the map yet cohesive and heavy as lead at the same time. Ian screamed the loudest when the news dropped of a new album so it was the obvious choice to get him on with our podcast maestro Buke to discuss all things Job For A Cowboy with bassist Nick Schendzielos. The guys cover the obvious items but as per usual they cover a whole lot more so get comfy and settle in for a spell. Enjoy. 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
After a 10 year hiatus we are joined for a mind blowing chat with Job For A Cowboy's Nick Schendzielos around their latest album release Moon Healer. We are shocked to learn that the decade absence was actually planned, and the new album is a conceptual follow up to their 2014 release Sun Eater. Nick explains what the members been up to throughout the years and that this piece is partly an expression of how we as humans perceive the layers of space and time. We also dive into subjects of self-discovery, ancient hallucinogenic, esoteric wisdom, and learn what the future hold for the band.
JOB FOR A COWBOY frontman Jonny Davy and EXIT EDEN co-vocalist Anna Brunner join us for this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast This week on the Loaded Radio Podcast Scott Penfold sits down first with JOB FOR A COWBOY vocalist Jonny Davy to discuss the death metal outfit's latest album "Moon Healer". “Moon Healer” is set for release on February 23rd via Metal Blade Records. The release marks JOB FOR A COWBOY‘s first new full-length in a decade! “Moon Healer” is a vivid illustration of what happens when creativity, aggression, and volatility tangle for the first time in years. Like the band's critically adored, 2014-released “Sun Eater” offering, “Moon Healer” is musically multifaceted, unabashedly brutal, and compellingly conceptual. Featuring a newly refreshed and reinspired lineup of frontman and co-founder Jonny Davy, guitarists Tony Sannicandro and Al Glassman, bassist Nick Schendzielos, and drummer (since 2020) Navene Koperweis, the band seamlessly picks up the mantle where JOB FOR A COWBOY‘s “Sun Eater” left off. Compared to past offerings, “Moon Healer” is as bone-crushing as JOB FOR A COWBOY has ever been. But it's more consistent and conceptual, composed with the utmost enthusiasm and confidence. “The evolution of our sound has become a big part of the band,” Davy says. “As we mature as musicians, our tastes and interests naturally expand. With age comes more experience and ideas that we wouldn't have considered in our earlier years.” “Moon Healer” was produced by Jason Suecof (DEATH ANGEL, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, DEICIDE) at his Audiohammer Studios and is the first JOB FOR A COWBOY album to feature session drummer Navene Koperweis (ex-Animosity). Davy previously worked with Koperweis in the progressive death metal side project FLESHWROUGHT, which released Dementia/Dyslexia through Metal Blade in 2010. Koperweis also worked as a session drummer for MACHINE HEAD and WHITECHAPEL and is currently in the band ENTHEOS, whose third full-length came out on Metal Blade in March 2023. In the second portion of the podcast, Scott sits down with Anna Brunner from EXIT EDEN. Symphonic metal unit EXIT EDEN, consisting of Clémentine Delauney (VISIONS OF ATLANTIS), Anna Brunner (LEAGUE OF DISTORTION) and Marina La Torraca (PHANTOM ELITE) recently released their second album, “Femmes Fatales” via Napalm Records. “Femmes Fatales” includes 12 songs in total — half covers, half original compositions. EXIT EDEN‘s new release follows the band's debut, 2017's “Rhapsodies In Black”, which garnered millions of video views (12 million on EXIT EDEN‘s cover of Bonnie Tyler‘s “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” alone). Previous singles from “Femmes Fatales”, “Run!” (featuring ex-NIGHTWISH bassist/vocalist Marko Hietala) and “Separate Ways” (JOURNEY cover) have already surpassed a million views since their respective releases in October and December 2023. Now performing as a trio, EXIT EDEN‘s new full-length follows the path of its predecessor, as it contains six cover versions of famous cross-generational super-hits, but this time also shines by offering six original compositions. With one exception (“Dying In My Dreams”, co-written by Marina La Torraca),the remaining five original songs were brought to life by Brunner and Hannes Braun (KISSIN' DYNAMITE),who is also responsible for recording, production and mixing, whereas the album was mastered by Jacob Hansen (DELAIN, AMARANTHE, VOLBEAT, DESTRUCTION and many more). Self-confidently leading straight into the tempting world of EXIT EDEN, opening “Femme Fatale”, “Buried In The Past” and “Hold Back Your Fear” conjure a mystical atmosphere with strings and orchestral elements, topped by complementary vocals uniting the sonic diversity of the all-femme trio. “Dying In My Dreams” and album closing “Elysium” set the tone as captivating mid-tempo tracks with intense choruses that speak straight to the heart.
The Subs get back to the Sun Eater story in Legionnaires 35, but that’s not all that’s going on. While the Legion is away, someone breaks into Legion HQ.

Gone Rogue: Gigantic Wave in Pacific Ocean Was Most Extreme 'Rogue Wave' on Record. Rogue waves are fun and terrifying; they are rare giant waves that can capsize boats. A 58 foot high wave, three times the height of the waves around it was recorded by a buoy in 2020. Rogue waves were thought to be ocean folklore until an 85 foot wave struck an oil-drilling platform in 1995. The intensity of rogue waves are measured against 'normal' waves around them. The parrots were taught to make calls to other dometic parrots using Facebook Messenger. The researchers wondered if given the choice, would the birds call each other? The answer is yes. Strong social dynamics started to appear. The calls lasted 5 minutes, and some of the birds created strong bonds (and still call each other after the study). Devon questions how making a video call is different from the 'mirror test'. Did pirates domesticate parrots? Devon is "well read" because of South Park and The Simpsons. https://news.northeastern.edu/2023/04/21/parrots-talking-video-calls/ Science Fiction: Devon is reading and listening to Sun Eater series: Empire of Silence which is well written but borrows liberally from other scifi. Ben talks about the lit-verse of Star Trek novels. Ben has been reading the Typhon Pact series of Star Trek novels and is on book 4, Paths of Disharmony.
