The Partnership of Rangeland Trusts - 20 Years of Cooperation, Collaboration, and Conservation

If you're a longtime Mountain & Prairie listener, then you're already familiar with the Partnership of Rangeland Trusts, also known as PORT. But for any new listeners, PORT is an alliance of agriculture-focused conservation organizations dedicated to preserving working farms and ranches and conserving productive agricultural lands. PORT is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, and in those two decades (and as of this recording), PORT organizations have helped more than 2,000 families conserve almost 3.2 million acres of productive working lands across the West. In this episode, I chat with three executive directors of PORT-affiliated organizations, two of which have been on the podcast before. You'll recognize Chad Ellis of the Texas Agricultural Land Trust (TALT), and Erik Glenn of the Colorado Cattlemen's Agricultural Land Trust. And new to the podcast is Michael Delbar, who leads the California Rangeland Trust. I've known all three of these guys for many years now, and I have long admired the ways that they lead their respective organizations. But perhaps even more impressive to me is how they have worked as a team with all nine PORT organizations to increase the scale, influence, and effectiveness of large-scale, working lands conservation. I don't think I've ever recorded an episode this early in the morning– we squeezed it in between an early morning breakfast and PORT's board meeting. Just the day before, we had all been at TALT's Working Lands Innovation Summit on the Birdwell-Clark Ranch in Henrietta, Texas, which was a huge success. So this was a great time to reflect on the importance of working lands, and we covered a lot: The Working Lands Innovation Summit and the importance of spending time out on the land; the history and purpose of PORT, the growth of additive conservation projects; private lands conservation as an economic driver; hard work; innovation; the importance of advocating for conservation in Washington DC; future plans for PORT, and much more. As you'll hear, I start out chatting with Chad and Erik, and then Michael steps in for Erik about halfway through and shares his valuable perspective.  A huge thanks to TALT for inviting me to Texas and another huge thanks to all the PORT organizations and landowner partners who have had such a positive and significant impact on the landscapes of the West. --- PORT Texas Agricultural Land Trust Colorado Cattlemen's Agricultural Land Trust California Rangeland Trust All PORT members Full episode notes and links: https://mountainandprairie.com/port/ Ed's Book Recs --- TOPICS DISCUSSED: 4:00 - Intro / What brought us all to Texas 7:00 - Importance of being on the land for the conference 8:45 - Introduction to the Partnership of Rangelands Trust (PORT) 12:30 - How and why PORT was created 15:30 - Additive conservation and the future 18:45 - Examples of additive conservation projects 25:30 - Private lands conservation as an economic driver 29:15 - Intro to Michael Delbar 31:00 - How the perception of conservation easements has changed in California 32:00 - Once again, the importance of relationships 34:15 - Hard work and innovation 39:45 - Advocating in DC 42:00 - How PORT's scale translates into results 43:30 - Future plans for PORT 47:00 - Funding needs and parting words --- ABOUT MOUNTAIN & PRAIRIE: Mountain & Prairie - All Episodes Mountain & Prairie Shop Mountain & Prairie on Instagram Upcoming Events About Ed Roberson Support Mountain & Prairie Leave a Review on Apple Podcasts

Two decades ago, agriculture faced mounting challenges as industrialization and urbanization threatened the nation's vast and unique private farmlands, rangelands, and grasslands. In response, six land trusts with ties to their state livestock trade associations formed the Partnership of Rangeland Trusts (PORT) in 2004 to safeguard working lands. Today, PORT has expanded to include nine member organizations working in 12 states. Collectively, these member organizations have helped more than 2,000 families voluntarily conserve more than three million acres of vibrant working lands.   The California Rangeland Trust is a proud member of PORT, and in honor of PORT's 20th anniversary celebration, we're excited to bring you a special BONUS episode of Tuned In to the Land. In this episode, CEO & host, Michael Delbar, is joined by Erik Glenn, PORT President and executive director of the Colorado Cattlemen's Agricultural Land Trust; Jessica Crowder, executive director of the Wyoming Stock Growers Land Trust; and Chad Ellis, executive director of the Texas Agricultural Land Trust. Together, we'll reflect on PORT's impact and share insights on the ongoing efforts to keep working lands in working hands. To learn more about the work that PORT does, visit its website.

Chad Ellis - On Leadership, Building Relationships, and Working for the Greater Good

Chad Ellis is the CEO of the Texas Agricultural Land Trust (TALT), which is one of the nation's leading ag-focused conservation organizations. TALT's mission is “to conserve the Texas heritage of agricultural lands, wildlife habitats, and natural resources,” but at its core, TALT's work is built on the foundation of long-term, trusting, mutually respectful relationships. - Given the small proportion of public lands in Texas compared to other western states, much of the responsibility for landscape-scale ecological health falls on the shoulders of private landowners. And since 2007, TALT has helped these landowners find ways to not only protect their family legacies, but to improve the overall quality of grasslands, water, air, and wildlife for all Texans. - Chad was raised in rural Texas, and from a very early age, he felt a deep connection to land, agriculture, and wildlife. While his entire career has been devoted to thoughtfully and effectively stewarding natural resources, you'll quickly realize that at his core, Chad is a relationship builder. During his tenures at the NRSC, the Noble Research Institute, and now as the leader of TALT, Chad has implemented many cutting-edge conservation solutions– but, as you'll hear him explain, none of these projects would be successful without solid, trusting relationships between all stakeholders. - Longtime listeners will recognize Chad from an earlier appearance on Mountain & Prairie– back in 2023, he was one of the panelists in an episode called “Landscape-Scale Management in a Private Land State,” which was recorded live at the Texas Chapter of the Wildlife Society's annual meeting. In this episode, we dig more into Chad's personal and professional journey in conservation– why he has devoted his career to such a challenging-yet-critical cause, and how he approaches his work from both practical and philosophical perspectives. We discuss his love of entrepreneurial approaches, his leadership style, mentors, the storied legacy of TALT's founder Blair Fitzsimons, supporting the next generation of conservationists, his favorite books, and much more. - If you haven't already, I'd encourage you to check out TALT's website and follow its work on social media– TALT is a constant source of inspiration for me and all of the Western conservation community. This is the second of two live episodes that were recorded at the Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society's 2023 annual meeting in Houston, Texas. The topic of this panel discussion was Achieving Landscape-Scale Management in a Private Land State. As you learned in the previous episode, Texas has very little public land compared to other western states, so large-landscape conservation in Texas brings with it a number of extremely unique challenges and opportunities. In this conversation, we heard from four of Texas's most respected conservation leaders– individuals who are finding ways to achieve ambitious conservation goals using their own unique skillsets and approaches. - I was joined on stage in front of an audience of nearly 600 people by Roel Lopez, Director of the Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute; Chad Ellis, CEO of the Texas Agricultural Land Trust; Terry Anderson, co-founder of Conservation Equity Management and Conservation Equity Partners; and Billy Tarrant, Associate Director of Stewardship Services at Borderlands Research Institute. You can check out the episode notes for more information on each of the panelists and links to their respective bios and organizations. - As you'll hear in the conversation, there are a wide range of innovative approaches and tools– from academic to non-profit to market-based– that are allowing Texas to be a trailblazer in private lands conservation in the United States. So we had a lot to cover in this hour-long session, including: The evolution and use of conservation easements, the importance of building solid relationships with landowners, new conservation tools on the horizon, how Texas has exported is private lands conservation tools to other states, data around population growth in Texas, advice for you and aspiring conservationists, and a long list of books, podcasts, and resources that have influenced these conservation leaders. - And just before this conversation, each of the panelists did a brief presentation that summarized all of the important work they are doing in Texas. If you'd like to listen to those talks and access their Powerpoint presentations, there's a link in the episode notes. However, you don't need to listen to those presentations to get full value out of this episode– but they are there if you want to go a little deeper. - If you're interested in conservation and learning from impressive individuals who have devoted their lives to land, stewardship, and conservation, then I know you'll enjoy this episode. Once again, thanks to John Kinsey and the Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society for inviting me down to Houston and for giving me the opportunity to have these meaningful conversations. Chad Ellis assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer of the Texas Agricultural Land Trust in March of 2020, leading the organization in its mission to conserve the Texas heritage of agricultural lands, wildlife habitats and natural resources. Prior to that, Ellis served as Industry Relations and Stewardship Manager at the Noble Research Institute (NRI) in Ardmore, Oklahoma, where he focused on the important role of stewardship in agriculture production for long-term sustainability in our country and created opportunities for the advancement of stewardship principles. To say Byron Bay metal masters From Crisis To Collapse have been hit harder by the pandemic would be detracting from the universal pasting the music world in general has been subject to, but you have to sympathise with a band who are that close to the Queensland and N.S.W border that their shows on both sides have been massively affected.Rather than bunker in for the period and count their losses, the boys instead busied themselves with various projects – guitarist Chad Ellis on creating a new bundle of joy and the remainder of the band focusing on a new album that should start seeing the light of day towards the middle of this year. After a pair of shows with Massic in October of last year, the rug was unceremoniously once again pulled out from underneath the band but they are about to make up for lost time with a headlining show at Mo’s Desert Clubhouse (with Diskust and Awake In Time) on February 11 and a leading slot on The Other Festival at the Fortitude Music Hall on February 13.Chad caught up with HEAVY earlier this week to discuss these two shows and the hairiness of his backside…“Hairy I'm about a 12 out of 10,” he valiantly offered, “and excited definitely redlining at a 10! When we got offered the invite from Lucius and COG we were blown away. We were actually recording with Lucius at the time - recording some drums for some new music that we're gonna put out later in the year - and we were talking about the state of things last December and I mentioned that it was going to be a shame we didn't have the annual last Friday In December COG show at the Great Northern which is tradition and he said yeah I know, it's been a tough year, but we're trying to put together this inaugural festival with a bunch of bands and we'd love to have you on the bill. At this time COVID was still prevalent and travel was an absolute bastard and wasn't happening so there wasn't any assurances but within a couple of weeks details got firmed up and Yogi their tour manager said they were about to press the button so we were in if we wanted to be in so now we can't wait! It's gonna be unreal. For me, COG are one of those bands who are one of my premiere - not just Australian, but all-time - favourite bands. I always see them when they come to Byron and if they're at a festival I'm always at their stage. I just love them. I think it was a ten-year hiatus they took but when they came back I made a blood oath to myself that I would never miss another COG show in my life. This will be the second time we have played with them and to be extended the invite directly from them is an honour. We're absolutely pumped and frothing to get up there and shred The Other Festival.”In the full interview, Chad talks more about the two shows, getting back out on the road, his impending personal hiatus to fulfil Fatherly duties, how the new music is coming along, what it’s like to record with one of Australia’s musical legends and more.

By now you've heard about the violent attacks by counter-protesters last Sunday in our beautiful downtown Nevada City. I must admit it broke my heart. It was painful to see our community torn in two by a jacked up, flag draped gang, tearing through a non-threatening peaceful protest of local families, women, and young people beating tambourines and pots and pans. These tough guys draped themselves in ‘Thin Blue Line’ flags, as if in support of police,- but in reality they made our law enforcement's job even more impossible than it already is. Even police chief, Chad Ellis, said so. In the middle of a pandemic when everything is so fragile, these guys decided to play fight club in the middle of our historic Broad Street. These thugs actually threw a city council member off her bike to the ground, and she sustained injuries. And these self identified ‘Patriots’ justified their actions by screaming down everyone in their path, (with their unmasked mouths I might add), “Get out of OUR town! You don’t belong here!” It is strange to me because every one of those marching peacefully that day was from HERE. Where did this idea come from that everyone who disagrees with us is now so foreign that we can’t possibly believe that they could be our neighbors? When did this happen to us? Covid is not just a disease of the body, but it’s also a sickness of the mind, and the soul. Moved by these events to speak out, fifth generation Nevada City resident, Richard Baker, whose family has been in Nevada County since the 1840’s, shares his heartfelt thoughts on how Sunday’s turn of events has affected him and his relationship to his community.

"It is an amalgamation of all the harder forms of metal", declared Ian Konrad, guitarist for Byron Bay metallers From Crisis To Collapse, attempting to summarise the sound of their upcoming debut EP The Seventh Tree, "like hardcore, the old street punk style, definitely a big European death metal influence and a strong mix of thrash in there as well so it's easier to put under the banner of extreme metal".For From Crisis To Collapse the lyrical content of their music is just as important as the music itself, with vocalist Angus Carter revealing the underlying theme of the album is both deeply personal and socially reflective."With the music itself being uplifting and empowering there's a lot about people really stepping into that power in the 21st century", he said. "We live in a light age where there's a lot of cool things going on but there's also a whole lot of fucked up shit going on that's being exposed everywhere and also not being expressed elsewhere and sometimes it's hard to be a normal human being in this twisted world we live in so it's just about taking abreast of power and opening your eyes up from all the bullshit and listening to some heavy metal"!In the full interview we speak with three of the members of From Crisis To Collapse, Ian, Angus, and guitarist Chad Ellis, who talk us through their upcoming single and video for 'Slow Burn' which be released exclusively through HEAVY on Friday, February 15, the meaning behind the title of debut EP The Seventh Tree, what parameters they use to gauge the success of the EP, signing an International deal and what it means for the band, finding your musical identity and more.
