The Strange Harbors Podcast

This week, we review the horror sensation of the summer, Curry Barker's sleeper hit: Obsession. A graduate of the sketch comedy to cinema pipeline, Barker shares much of his pedigree with other breakout filmmakers such as Zach Cregger, the Philippou Brothers, and Chris Stuckmann, but does he have what it takes to break out of the habits of his contemporaries? We talk about Obsession's streamlined power, its wild turns, and the film's undeniable superstar: Inde Navarette.

Featuring a young Christian Slater, along with Tony Hawk, Gleaming the Cube goes beyond skateboard culture into a shaggy dog detective movie that captures early 90s youth culture with glorious vibes. We see if this is purely nostalgia or if it becomes a timeless piece of extreme sports in the movies.Other topics include the skating movie genre of the era, adjacent Bond-like movies targeted to youth, the Corey Haim and Corey Feldman era, Stranger Things events, further streaming woes, and physical media featuring the Rambo steel book collection and Student Bodies VHS.Songs of the WeekThree Angels by CJ RamoneHey Moon by John MausRemainders Jukebox PlaylistWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter

Not a dream, not a hoax — SVU is back. After an eight-year hiatus and a “miracle leap forward in technology,” Matt Singer returns with new co-host Jordan Hoffman. To christen the new era, they tackle Jonah Hill’s Apple TV original Outcome, starring Keanu Reeves as the neurotically obsessed movie star (and former heroin addict) Reef Hawk. The duo debates whether the film is a fascinating failure — or just a “transcendentally bad” piece of garbage. Plus, Jordan takes us on the grossest space-related tangent in podcast history, Matt provides some radical streaming honesty, including a recommendation for Netflix’s new Pizza Movie, and producer Sam Van Hallgren joins the fray for the inaugural edition of Letterboxding. Send us Fan MailThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie has become the latest battleground in the never‑ending war between film critics and passionate fandoms. Critics—myself included—have been largely unimpressed with the film's storytelling, pacing, and creative choices. Fans, on the other hand, have embraced it wholeheartedly, defending it with the kind of intensity usually reserved for console wars and championship games. In this episode of iCritic LIVE, we dig into why this divide has become so heated, why some fans believe critics are “out of touch,” and how online discourse has escalated to the point of personal insults and accusations. This isn't just about one movie—it's about the growing cultural gap between professional criticism and fan‑driven enthusiasm.

SEASON 2 - EPISODE 186 - Peter Bradshaw - Film Critic In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with Peter Bradshaw, the film critic at The Guardian. We normally talk about making movies with our guests, but with Peter, we talk about watching and reviewing them instead. We learn how Peter became a film critic after being successfully sued by conservative MP Alan Clark for satire, and he shares how he thinks about criticism in general. Peter reflects on the learning curve of becoming a film critic, and we discuss how his job has changed with the proliferation of social media. Later, Peter shares how he balances the subjectivity of his own personal point-of-view of a film with the objective facts surrounding it in his reviews, and we learn which movies Peter realized, years later, he was wrong about. Peter also makes the case of cinema's competitiveness in modern life, and he shares which movies he watched growing up that sparked his love and appreciation for the movies. Plus, we reflect on living in a world where everything and everyone gets reviewed. - This episode is sponsored by Picture Shop & Aputure

Lee Pugsley and Alex Howard of The Dark Room watched this year's Oscar ceremony with audio description on, and they brought friends. John Stark, and the newest Blind Film Critic Society member Ren Leach, join them to hand out their own awards, debate the night's surprises and snubs, and reflect on what it actually felt like to experience the telecast as a blind audience member. They get specific. Who got named from the stage, which nominated films still don't have audio description, and what the Marlee Matlin captioning moment means for the conversation ahead. This is a cross-post from The Dark Room, a podcast by two legally blind cinephiles for film lovers of all abilities. Subscribe to their show, and if you want to go deeper on the professionals who make audio description possible, that's what The ADNA Presents is here for.

This episode of the Visual Intonation Podcast captures the energy of Oscars 2026. Vanté Gregory sits down with film critic Erté Arnold to break it all down. Every category gets attention. Every winner gets questioned. They move with purpose through the night's biggest moments while reflecting on what truly mattered. They spend time on Sinners. Its impact. Its weight. Its place in the culture. Not just whether it won, but what it changed. The conversation goes deeper than predictions and reactions. It becomes about meaning. About what film does when it hits right. But this is not only about the Oscars. It is about them. Over ten years of brotherhood. Shared taste. Different opinions. The kind of bond that sharpens conversation instead of softening it. You hear that history in every exchange. They also talk about how it all began. The first spark. The road into film. What pulled them in and what keeps them here. It is honest. It is reflective. And it reminds you why we talk about movies in the first place.   Erté Arnold's Social Media: https://www.instagram.com/deavon_man?igsh=a2NsZ2h5d25yeGJn Support the showVisual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vantegregory/To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation

"One Battle After Another" is an American black comedy action-thriller film produced, written, and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. It is inspired by the 1990 novel "Vineland" by Thomas Pynchon and features an ensemble cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio, with Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti (in her film debut). The story follows an ex-revolutionary who is forced back into his former life of violence when a corrupt military officer pursues him and his daughter. With a budget of $130–175 million, it is the most expensive film of Anderson's career. It garnered widespread acclaim and numerous accolades. These include three wins at the 31st Critics' Choice Awards (including Best Picture), four wins at the 83rd Golden Globes (including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy), one win and a record seven nominations at the 32nd Actor Awards (including Outstanding Performance by a Cast), six wins at the 79th British Academy Film Awards (including Best Film), and thirteen nominations at the 98th Academy Awards (including Best Picture). The American Film Institute also listed the film among the top ten films of 2025, and it won five awards from the National Board of Review (including Best Film), as well as Best Picture prizes from the New York Film Critics Circle, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the National Society of Film Critics. Teyana Taylor and cinematographer Michael Bauman were kind enough to spend some time speaking with Next Best Picture Owner & Editor In Chief Matt Neglia. Ema Sasic spoke with Chase Infiniti, and Brendan Hodges spoke with the film's editor, Andy Jurgensen. You can listen to all of these interviews below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now available to watch at home on 4K UHD from Warner Bros. Pictures and is up for your consideration for the 98th Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director (Anderson), Best Actor (DiCaprio), Best Supporting Actor (Del Toro and Penn), Best Supporting Actress (Taylor), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Casting, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, and Best Sound.
