Just a couple of episodes ago, we were praising Steven Spielberg as one of our greatest living filmmakers. Then we watched Disclosure Day, and might have to roll back some of those compliments.  We gush over Blue Heron, the extraordinary memory piece from Sophy Romvari. And inspired by Romvari's sophisticated approach to exploring her own childhood experiences – both real and imagined – through cinema, we discuss some other films that dig into the concept and aesthetics of memory in interesting ways.  And finally, we get excited about our upcoming screening of Gregg Araki's Nowhere on 28 June at GFT, which will be followed by an on-stage discussion.

The Post Relevant Podcast is a secret brought to Earth through the wise Owl, handed off to a cadre of Hawks, red-eyed demon dogs, an army of Deer, an Air Force of Vultures, and borne to the foot of the the mystical Blue Heron, who blesses every episode and eventually drops them beneath the Blue Moon into the ears of local Rabbits. The Rabbits leave each episodes of the show on listener's doorsteps, wrapped inside an acorn shell encased in flower petals. Its a cottage industry, but very efficient!Twin Peaks: the Return: the DECODE returns with an interpretation of episode 9! Its a 'no-bells-and-whistles' soft reboot of our show, originally recorded in January 2025 at the beginning of the LA fires. Appropriate for a Twin Peaks podcast, and strangely synchronous for our current "Year of the Fire Horse" in 2026. Hosts Phil Ristaino and Justin Epifanio recount Justin's first-hand experience surviving the Los Angeles inferno. Then they go in deep into trying to explain TP:TR episode 9. Statements are made, like "Its a fucking morgue!" And they are not wrong. Cutting questions are posed, like "When did he lose his marbles?" Insights are given, like "When the dog got his cat's eyes?" Tammy poses. Chad huffs and puffs. William Hastings yearns for scuba diving and mixed drinks. All the while, the disembodied head and decapitated body of Major Briggs looms large, holds clues, and rings like a monastery bell. We discover much!Throughout the show, Phil recounts stories of being visited by different wild animals while exploring the city of Nashville TN. Its another trippy show! Is the theater experience back? Independent horror films like Obsession and Backrooms are making waves at the box office. Fresh stories like The Drama and Crime 101 have made their mark. So co-host Nicholas Ybarra and producer Sonja Mereu thought this was a great time to highlight some independent films that are absolutely worth seeing on the big screen while you still can. - We start with Boots Riley's highly-anticipated, pro-Union, Technicolor powerhouse, I Love Boosters. The film stars Keke Palmer and Demi Moore. - Second, Aleshea Harris delivers an outstanding directorial debut in the revenge film, Is God Is. - Speaking of memorable debuts, Sophie Romvari makes her feature debut with the personal and powerful Blue Heron. All these films can be seen on the big screen through tomorrow, and they are definitely worth seeing while you can. Keep an eye out for more great independent films throughout the year. The more we see them, the more they get made. ❗️SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE ❗️Support the showSign up for our Patreon for exclusive Bonus Content.Follow the podcast on Instagram @gimmethreepodcastYou can  keep up with Bella on Instagram @portraitofacinephile or Letterboxd You can keep up with Nick: on Instagram @nicholasybarra, on Twitter (X) @nicholaspybarra, or on LetterboxdShout out to contributor and producer Sonja Mereu. On episode 346 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson and AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer, Mark Johnson, and Josh Parham to go back 15 years and take a look at the 84th Academy Awards, covering the films of 2011. On this week's retrospective, the AW team returns from Cannes to take a look back at the 84th Oscars, one that was known for having a great selection of films to choose from that the Academy decided to mostly ignore for more middle of the road, safer choices. This lead to a winner that is not remembered as much for a film that defined the year, both from a critical and commercial aspect, and also lead to one of the worst wins in the Best Actress category. So given the nature of the show and the game played by the AW team, change is a coming for 2011, as the following films were mentioned over the courses of lengthy discussions over every category; Weekend, Contagion, Shame, Melancholia, Crazy Stupid Love, Take Shelter, Killer Joe, The Skin I Live In, 50/50, as well as films that were already nominees getting more love like Moneyball, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Warrior, The Tree of Life, Drive, Bridesmaids, and more. In their in-depth discussion, the AW team talked about the film year of 2011, briefly discuss talk about The Artist as a Best Picture winner, and how that speaks to the legacy of their nominates and or wins, do an extensive conversation over the below the line categories and nominees for the year, and then the new version of the AW Shoulda Woulda Coulda game, where instead of individual replacements, they must decide as a group who the nominees and winners should be in the top eight categories. The rules of the game state they can only replace two of the nominees that year from each category, except in Best Picture, where the group could replace up to four films to make up the final set of five nominated films. Like past retrospective episodes, it was a fascinating, fun conversation including spirited debates, alliances, vote swinging, celebrating various movies, performances that aren't normally talked about and more that we all hope you enjoy. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. You can also listen on the AW YouTube page. This podcast runs 2h52m. We will be back in next week for a review round-up episode discussing some of the newest releases in theaters like Obsession, Backrooms, Masters of the Universe, Power Ballad, Blue Film, Blue Heron, and more. Dusty roads stretch west, the speaker crackles, and Bianca and Julian saddle up for an unexpected detour - Anything But Toto goes country. In this episode, they put their long-held assumptions about the genre to the test with a blind review of the five biggest country songs currently dominating the charts. For two self-professed skeptics of Nashville's clichés, political baggage, and bro-country stereotypes, it's an experiment in open-minded listening. Will they strike gold... or just more rhinestones in the rough? Before riding west, they catch up on some current events: the release of The Lemon Twigs' new album Look For Your Mind! and their bizarre Toronto concert experience, which sparks a broader conversation about concert etiquette and social awareness. They also discuss the backlash surrounding Harry Styles' Together Together tour controversy, and celebrate the ongoing Canadiana cinema renaissance, with love for films like Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, Mile End Kicks, and Blue Heron. Then it's onto country. Bianca and Julian unpack their history with the genre, from observing the suburban millennial migration away from hip-hop and toward country, to the political and cultural forces that may have shaped that shift. Along the way, they revisit some of their favourite country-adjacent songs and trace the genre's many stylistic branches - from California country to polished pop-country crossovers, with stops at everyone from Glen Campbell and Eagles to Shaboozey and Taylor Swift. And then comes the main event: the Billboard Top 5. What begins as a broad review quickly becomes an unofficial review of Ella Langley's singles, with appearances from Stella Lefty, Luke Combs, and Kacey Musgraves along the way. Do they find the needle in the haystack? The diamond in the dust? You'll have to listen to find out. Share your favourite country songs at anythingbuttoto@gmail.com Theme music by: Daniel Konikoff

Writer/director Sophy Romvari's feature debut, BLUE HERON, already has her being added to the shortlist of great Canadian auteurs. And on that list, she'd be alongside the late, great Jean-Marc Vallée, whose 2005 film C.R.A.Z.Y. captures some of the same deeply felt, retrospective family drama that Romvari captures in her own films. After this conversation, Jordan has one quick thing about illustrator Tony Stella, who passed away this week. Thanks to everyone who participated in this year's MaxFunDrive! "Blue Heron" is a 2025 drama film written and directed by Sophy Romvari in her directorial debut. Described as "semi-autobiographical," the film is based in part on Romvari's own childhood and her previous short film "Still Processing." The film stars Eylul Guven as Sasha, the eight-year-old daughter of a Hungarian immigrant family who relocate to Vancouver Island in the late 1990s, while their oldest son, Jeremy (Edik Beddoes), displays increasingly dangerous behavioral issues in their new environment. The cast also includes Ádám Tompa and Iringó Réti as Sasha's parents, Liam Serg and Preston Drabble as Sasha's brothers, and Amy Zimmer as Adult Sasha. The film had its world premiere at the 78th Locarno Film Festival, receiving universal acclaim, winning the Swatch First Feature Award, and later the Best Canadian Discovery award at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. Romvari was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which will be released in theaters on April 17th by Janus Films. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on...
