➡ CLICK HERE to send me a text, I'd love to hear what you thought about this episode! Leave your name in the text so I know who it's from! Another week, another inspiring Milwaukee woman. Today on the podcast, I am excited to introduce my dear friend Nell and the story behind her departure from Milwaukee's culinary scene where she was (and still is) revered as a friend, mentor, connector, go-getter and all around STAR. But in 2019, she made the decision to pivot out of the food industry and into a new life. So far this season, I've talked to women who have pivoted INTO something - and we've focused on where they ended up. But I wanted to bring on a woman who could speak to us about pivoting OUT of something as well. (though where she pivots is equally as interesting, and we DO talk about that, too). It's equally as brave to decide to leave a career, especially if (and when) you're at the pinnacle of your place in the industry, like Nell. Nell was also my collaborator on the Wilcuma Dinner for the Hanan Refugees Relief Group last week. You can find out more about the dinner on the segment on TMJ4 here!Locals and Links: Want to work with Nell, here is her web page at Shorewest RealtorsWant to check out her cookbook on Ramen, here it is at BoswellIf you enjoyed this episode, be sure to check out the episode with Lori Fredrich, Food Writer for OnMilwaukee.com HERE, or wherever you get your podcasts! CLICK HERE to send me a text, I'd love to hear what you thought about this episode! Leave your name in the text so I know who it's from! Another week, another inspiring Milwaukee woman. There are SO many incredible women in Milwaukee I really don't need to reintroduce previous guests … unless they have incredible stories that align perfectly with the season's theme. Like this week's guest, Emerald Mills-Williams. Emerald was a guest back in Season One when Cream City Dreams was just getting its legs. Back then, Emerald hadn't yet opened her restaurant and incubator for rising chefs, Turning Tables & Eatery, nor did she have a hyphen in her name! A lot has changed since then. For one thing, she married her true love (woot!). And since our episode aired, she opened and closed one establishment and has since opened another, Diverse Dining Market. Realizing what was important to her, Emerald is returning to the mission of her brainchild, Diverse Dining, and the mission of Diverse Dining Market: connecting us, building change through relationships and uplifting and supporting minority owned businesses. Listen as we talk in this episode about the ups and downs that came with opening her first restaurant, and the lessons she took from shutting it down and starting again. And stick around to the end to hear what might just beome my all time favorite line ever spoken by a guest on this podcast. I am not horsing around when I say that. Locals and Links we love! For those following the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 and had already suspected pilot Zaharie Ahmad Shah of hijacking the plane, killing his passengers and himself – the discovery of data on his home flight simulator was the smoking gun.Out of some 600 saved routes on his PC, one resembled the flight that allegedly ended in the South Indian Ocean on March 8, 2014. Except the routes between the satellite-data-backed projected flight path and Zaharie's simulated course didn't match up in many important ways. Was it a training run for mass murder-suicide, or just an eerie coincidence made by a man who didn't fit the psychological profile of a criminal with that kind of a murderous capacity? As usual, it depends how you see the mystery. In Episode 23, Jeff Wise and Andy Tarnoff break it down and recreate the evidence to explore the key similarities and differences between flight and flight simulator.Even more details at our show page, here: https://www.deepdivemh370.com/23-the-flight-simulatorEpisode 23 is sponsored by OnMilwaukee.com, an award-winning independent local media company based in Milwaukee, Wis. Shawna didn't follow a typical path to becoming one of the most in-demand live entertainers in sports. In the last few years alone, she has been one of four DJs in the NBA Bubble, has opened for Lizzo and Shaq, was the official DJ of the Ryder Cup, and much more. It wasn't long ago that the now 40-year-old was cold-calling bars and clubs in Milwaukee, “begging” to spin on a random weeknight. In fact, Shawna didn't even get into DJing until she had to stop playing basketball (she played for UW-Madison and professionally overseas). So, how did all of this happen? When his Kia Boys documentary was released, Tommy G was only a month away from having to give up his dream of being a full-time YouTuber. Luckily, that video now has over 6.7 million views, and he has amassed a following of over 700k subscribers. That said, Tommy G was far from an overnight success, he was actively posting YouTube videos for years before catching his big break, and there is a lot more to Tommy G's story than the documentary that put him on the map.I initially met Tommy G when he was a door-to-door salesman and knocked on my door back in 2018. He worked in sales while posting YouTube prank videos on the side until he got fired in early 2022. Since the Kia Boys documentary, he has covered more dangerous underground stories from all around the U.S. and Mexico. So, why does Tommy G do what he does? What was his response to the Kia Boys? Wisconsin is one of those places that lives in the imaginations of Americans largely in the form of caricature. Full of cheese curd eating, beer loving, Harley riders, the state rarely gets the respect it deserves. In reality, Wisconsin is all of those things and so much more. I grew up 90 minutes south of Milwaukee but it might as well have been a totally different country. Chicago is Midwestern in the way that non-alcoholic beer is beer, in name only. Wisconsin, on the other hand, is pure Midwest. From Friday night fish frys to the homey environs of supper clubs and a relatively laid back sense of community and good spiritedness, Wisconsin is the heart of the Midwest for me.So today I'm excited that in the latest episode of Beer Travelers we're making our way to one of the great overlooked gems in the American craft beer scene: Milwaukee, Wisconsin. To help lead us through this town's glorious and storied beer scene we have two fantastic local guides. Chris Drosner is a long-time beer writer and editor covering Wisconsin and Milwaukee specifically. He's written the Beer Baron column for the Wisconsin State Journal, the daily newspaper in the capital city of Madison. Over the past decade, the U.S. has seen a food revolution in terms of Indian dining. The once rustic heritage Indian fare traditionally served in restaurants has begun to take on new forms, with a growing number of young chefs offering modern takes on dishes like chicken tikka, tandoori chicken, as well as adding new Indian-inspired fare to their menus. Among the changes brought on by more modern Indian fare is an emphasis on carefully chosen, often local, ingredients, which are presented in a variety of new and exciting ways. This week on FoodCrush, we're talking with Fatima and Amrita Kumar, the co-owners of Saffron, a modern Indian restaurant which recently opened in Milwaukee's Third Ward. During our conversation, they discuss the inspiration that went into creating the progressive new concept, the menu items that are drawing crowds and Saffon's inventive bar program, which offers diners a new way of experiencing Indian-inspired flavors in beverage form. Along the way, we also discuss the challenges of offering stellar service during the opening weeks at a Downtown hotspot.
