Hai thế kỷ sau ngày ra đời, bảng chữ Braille được phổ biến tại 140 quốc gia trên thế giới, do có thể ứng dụng cho bất kỳ ngôn ngữ nào có dùng ký tự La tinh. Nhưng trước khi học cách dùng chữ Braille, người khiếm thị phải biết đọc và biết viết tiếng mẹ đẻ của mình, rồi sau đó mới học chữ Braille. Cũng như người thường đọc chữ bằng mắt, người khiếm thị đọc chữ bằng đầu ngón tay, nhưng nếu không luyện tập trong một thời gian dài, người khiếm thị có thể quên cách đoc bảng chữ Braille. Trong xã hội công nghệ thời đại, có rất nhiều ứng dụng dùng âm thanh để hỗ trợ người khiếm thị. Có lẽ cũng vì thế, nạn mù chữ Braille ngày càng gia tăng, do giới trẻ thời nay ít còn quan tâm đến việc học chữ nổi. Tại Pháp, trong số các tổ chức trợ giúp người khiếm thị, có Trung tâm Phiên âm và Xuất bản chữ Braille (gọi tắt là CTEB) ở Toulouse. Mục tiêu của hiệp hội này là tạo điều kiện cho người khiếm thị tiếp cận dễ dàng hơn sách giáo khoa hay sách đọc in bằng chữ nổi. Trả lời phỏng vấn RFI ban tiếng Pháp, ông Denis Guérin, trưởng ban điều hành trung tâm CTEB, cho biết vì sao việc duy trì sách in chữ Braille là điều cần thiết : « Chúng ta nên hiểu rằng, sách chữ nổi nói riêng và sách dành cho người khuyết tật nói chung ít khi nào được chính phủ tài trợ. Sách chữ nổi không dành cho số đông, ấn bản thường bị giới hạn, cho nên giá sách chữ nổi thường rất là cao, khoảng 700 euro một bộ. Vì vậy, có hai trở ngại lớn : Nhiều gia đình không đủ khả năng để mua những cuốn sách đắt tiền như vậy và hơn nữa, dù có muốn đọc sách, người khiếm thị cũng không có nhiều sự lựa chọn. Bởi vì trên thế giới hiện giờ, chỉ có 4% sách in được biên soạn lại bằng chữ nổi dành cho người khiếm thị. Mỗi năm, hiệp hội chúng tôi xuất bản 200 đầu sách mới, được biên soạn cho người hoàn toàn khiếm thị hoặc có thị lực kém. Nhưng nhìn chung, độc giả khiếm thị vẫn không có nhiều sách để đọc. Chẳng hạn như trong loạt truyện Harry Potter mỗi cuốn sách bỏ túi dày khoảng 400 trang, được bán với giá 10 euro. Để biên soạn lại theo chữ nổi Braille đọc bằng đầu ngón tay, quyển sách 400 trang này sẽ có đến 18 tập khổ A4, mỗi tập tương đương với một chương sách thường. Từ giá 10 euro ban đầu của một quyển sách thường, giá thành của một bộ sách chữ Braille 18 tập là khoảng 700 euro, chủ yếu vì khâu biên soạn đòi hỏi nhiều thời gian và công sức. Mỗi đầu sách mới bằng chữ nổi, chỉ được in thành vài phiên bản mà thôi ». Tuy phát hành mỗi năm 200 đầu sách mới, ban điều hành ngành xuất bản chữ nổi còn nhận thấy rằng trong thời gian gần đây, lại xuất hiện thêm một vấn đề khác. Đó là số người biết đọc chữ Braille ngày càng ít đi. Ông Denis Guérin, thuộc Trung tâm Xuất bản chữ Braille (CTEB), cho biết vì sao : « Vâng, chúng tôi không có số liệu thống kê chính thức, nhưng theo các chuyên gia, số người biết đọc chữ nổi tại Pháp là khoảng từ 15% đến 20% trong cộng đồng người khiếm thị, tức là cứ trên 5 người khiếm thị, chỉ có một người biết đọc chữ nổi. Sở dĩ có tình trạng này là vì chúng ta thiếu giáo viên, thiếu trường chuyên biệt, thiếu tài liệu giảng dạy hay sách đọc để giải trí. Đó là lý do vì sao chúng ta nên duy trì việc xuất bản sách, không chỉ  tiểu thuyết văn học, mà nhiều sách giáo khoa cũng cần được chuyển thể sang chữ Braille. Hiện giờ, hệ thống chữ nổi đã xuất hiện tại nhiều nơi công cộng, trong bảo tàng thư viện, trong thang máy dẫn đến bến tàu sân ga, có thể nói là hệ thống chỉ dẫn người mù ngày càng được phổ biến ở Pháp, nhưng ngược lại, vẫn thiếu nguồn lực dành cho văn hóa và giáo dục : vẫn chưa có nhiều đầu tư vào việc đào tạo giáo viên hay tài trợ sách giáo khoa để tạo cơ hội cho người khiếm thị có thêm sách để học, có thêm truyện để đọc ». Thời đại công nghệ số phải chăng tạo thêm nhiều khó khăn khác cho người khiếm thị. Hệ thống chữ Braille có thật sự khó học hơn so với các ngoại ngữ thông dụng, Ông Denis Guérin cho biết : « Nếu không có đủ trường học để dạy cách đọc chữ nổi, dĩ nhiên chúng ta có thể thay thế bằng công nghệ âm thanh cùng với điện thoại thông minh. Có thể nói, chúng ta chọn một con đường dễ dàng hơn. Nhưng cũng nên nhắc nhở tầm quan trọng của chữ nổi đối với người khiếm thị, kể cả những người kém thị lực và những người hoàn toàn bị mù. Người có thị lực kém, nhưng vẫn còn một chút khả năng nhìn, vẫn có thể đọc sách bằng cách phóng đại, điều chỉnh cỡ chữ lớn hơn. Còn những người mù thì lại cần viết và đọc hệ thống chữ nổi. Chẳng hạn như một thanh niên trẻ tuổi, tuy có thị lực bình thường, nhưng lại không thích đọc sách, chỉ thích xem phim (hình ảnh) và nghe nhạc (âm thanh) thì với thời gian, bạn trẻ này sẽ mất dần kỹ năng đánh vần, nhận diện mặt chữ và dễ viết sai chính tả. Do vậy, bất kể bạn đọc bằng mắt hay đọc bằng đầu ngón tay, thì lợi ích của việc đọc vẫn là nắm vững nội dung qua hệ thống chữ viết hay chữ nổi. Việc đọc khác với nghe nhìn, mặc dù những ứng dụng âm thanh đã giúp đỡ rất nhiều các cộng đồng người khiếm thị trên khắp thế giới trong 20 năm qua. Về chuyện học chữ nổi, tôi không nghĩ là chữ Braille khó học so với các ngoại ngữ như tiếng Đức chẳng hạn. Theo kinh nghiệm của tôi, khi bạn tập đọc, tập viết từ khi còn nhỏ, đâu đó bạn đã rèn luyện cho bộ não của mình làm quen với một hệ thống mới. Rồi sau đó, thầy cô ở trường, phương pháp giảng dạy và sách vở giáo khoa giúp cho bạn xây dựng năng lực học tập. Theo tôi, chữ Braille không khó hơn bất kỳ ngôn ngữ nào khác. Và quá trình thức học tập lúc nào cũng đòi hỏi thời gian ». Học chữ Braille khó hay dễ? Trả lời câu hỏi này, Michelle, một phụ nữ cao tuổi, cho biết bà đã quyết định học chữ Braille ở tuổi 69, sau khi bị mất thị lực do một chứng bệnh về mắt : « Tôi đã học chữ Braille ban đầu là vì nhu cầu trong đời sống thường nhật. Nếu mù chữ nổi, tôi không thể nào nhận ra những hộp thuốc mà tôi cần dùng hàng ngày. Sau đó, tôi học chữ nổi là vì sở thích, bởi vì thông qua chữ Braille, tôi đã khám phá lại rất nhiều điều : Đầu tiên là niềm vui đọc sách, thả trí tưởng tượng qua câu chữ ngôn từ, kế đến nữa là tôi luyện trí nhớ, nhất là trong tiếng Pháp bạn hơi phân vân về mặt chính tả, khi bạn ngừng đọc sách. Bạn không thật sự ý thức được điều đó, chừng nào bạn chưa đánh mất nó. Khi bắt đầu học chữ Braille, tôi đã học bảng chữ cái khá nhanh. Xúc giác ở đây rất quan trọng và tôi dùng ngón trỏ để thực hiện mọi thao tác. Công việc đọc sách đến sau khi học thuộc lòng bảng chữ cái. Tôi thấy việc học chữ Braille chẳng khác gì học một ngoại ngữ. Khác biệt duy nhất là chữ Braille đồng nghĩa với khiếm thị, trong khi ngôn ngữ nước ngoài không có liên quan gì tới khuyết tật ». Thế giới đã bước vào thời kỳ của trí tuệ nhân tạo, của các ứng dụng trên điện thoại thông minh cũng như máy móc có thể được điều khiển bằng giọng nói. Thế nhưng, các công cụ hiện đại này có giúp phát triển chữ Braille, hay ngược lại tạo thêm trở ngại cho việc học chữ nổi? Về điểm này, các chuyên gia trong ngành cho rằng những công cụ này bổ sung cho nhau: « Vào thời công nghệ số, cho dù đang học cách sử dụng các công cụ hiện đại, người khiếm thị có nhiều lúc vẫn cần đến chữ nổi Braille. Theo các chuyên gia, nhiều người mắc sai lầm khi cho rằng hệ thống chữ nổi Braille và ứng dụng điện thoại thường đối đầu với nhau, thậm chí công nghệ hiện đại có thể thay thế cho chữ Braille. Thật ra, mỗi hệ thống đều có lợi ích riêng và giới chuyên gia khuyên người khiếm thị nên học cả hai. Riêng chữ Braille nên được học càng sớm càng tốt. Ngay khi một ai đó bị mất thị lực, hay một đứa trẻ sơ sinh được phát hiện có khiếm khuyết về thị giác, điều quan trọng là nên làm quen ngay với công nghệ số cũng như hệ thống chữ Braille, vì cả hai đều có cùng một mục đích : tạo cho người khiếm thị cơ hội hòa nhập, trở nên tự lập thay vì gạt họ ra bên lề xã hội ».

Multiple weeks. Untold public monies. Search warrants signed by magistrate judges with no explanation of what probable cause existed — including a search of Mandy's Marriott room records and private guest information divulged over the phone. Hours of surveillance footage later, police could not locate the confrontation Barbier described, and the case is now listed as "inactive". For most of the last century, gardeners were taught to cultivate their soil after every rain to conserve moisture, to think of plant roots as lone competitors, and to treat "plant communication" as science fiction. All of that was built on the best evidence available at the time, and all of it has been revised, in some cases more than once, as better tools let researchers see what earlier generations simply could not. In this episode, we walk through four real case studies of plant science changing its mind. Along the way, we talk about how the scientific method works, why one of my favorite phrases, "we don't know what we don't know," is not a discouraging idea but an exciting one, and what all of this means for the choices you make in your own garden each season, now and into the future. As well as being an artist and mother, she's an entrepreneur and educator and one of the two co-founders of Life Itself, which is designed to build a wiser future through culture, space and community. The Life Itself website says, 'We are pragmatic utopians, committed to practical action for a radically wiser, weller world. We create conscious coliving hubs, start businesses, do research and engage in activism to pioneer a wiser culture and plant the seeds of a second renaissance.'  The Second Renaissance is an initiative of Life Itself which acknowledges that we live in a moment of potential crisis and collective rebirth and offers a home to the growing community of people who are working to make this rebirth happen. Sylvie is an artist of extraordinary scope and depth and so the role of art in that rebirth is the focus of this episode, but we ranged far and deep into the nature of healing our shadows so that we can heal the ancestral and descendant lines, so that we can become the ancestors our descendants are proud of; we explored the nature of ritual in building new beginnings and helping endings; as we did with the Brother from nearby Plum Village, we explored the nature of life and death and how we can meet our own deaths with grace and joy and hope.  Above all, we explored how we can fall in love with living - with life itself - so that we might lay strong foundations for real transformation. Quand une entreprise est traversée par une crise majeure, comment reconstruit-on le management et la confiance des équipes ? Comment redonner aux managers le plaisir de leur rôle quand personne ne leur a jamais donné les outils pour l'exercer vraiment ?Dans cet épisode, Delphine Zanelli reçoit Fanny Barbier, DRH du groupe Emeis, anciennement Orpea.Fanny Barbier arrive en août 2022 dans une organisation en état de choc. Double traumatisme : les séquelles du Covid, puis la la publication du livre Les Fossoyeurs qui a exposé les pratiques internes du groupe au grand public. Les managers ne savent pas s'ils vont rester. Les soignants s'interrogent sur le sens de leur engagement. Certains salariés viennent prendre soin de patients en EHPAD et dorment le soir dans leur voiture. Dans ce contexte, la mission de Fanny Barbier est à la fois immédiate et de long terme : reconstruire la confiance dans une organisation de plus de 1 000 établissements, tout en continuant à faire fonctionner les établissements au quotidien.La reconstruction passe d'abord par des preuves concrètes. Revalorisation salariale après 15 ans sans négociation salariale, webcasts transparents avec l'ensemble des collaborateurs, séparations rapides des profils non alignés avec les nouvelles valeurs. Le principe directeur est simple et constant : on dit ce qu'on fait, on fait ce qu'on dit. Fanny Barbier décrit aussi la création d'une école de management co-construite avec les managers eux-mêmes. L'appel à candidatures est posté à 9h. À midi, 300 volontaires ont répondu. Ce chiffre dit quelque chose de précis : les managers ne refusent pas d'apprendre. Ils refusent d'être ignorés.L'épisode aborde aussi le programme Amy, construit autour de quatre piliers concrets : logement d'urgence, soutien aux proches, accès à la santé, aide face aux difficultés financières. Ce programme part d'un constat que Fanny Barbier formule sans détour : des soignants qui arrivent chaque matin pour prendre soin de résidents, alors qu'eux-mêmes ne savent pas où ils vont dormir le soir. The subject of whether you should top your pepper plants can bring on a pretty strong debate among gardeners. That's because this is one of those topics where the answer genuinely is: it depends. And I mean that in a very specific, evidence-based way that comes down to two things: your climate and your pepper type. I'll be straight with you, I do not top my peppers. We are in a zone 6b in west central Missouri and our season is just short enough that for our large sweet peppers, by the time a topped plant recovered and loaded up with new fruit, I'd be in a race with the first frost, so I don't love my odds of winning. And for our smaller peppers, both hot and sweet, they branch naturally. They've never needed my help getting bushy and they generally end up so loaded with fruit there's no need for me to create new growing points. But that does NOT mean topping is wrong. In fact, if your growing season is long enough and you are growing the right type of pepper, there is a solid, research-grounded argument for it and I want to make that argument fairly today. Alan Benoit, Paul Riffault, Tom Barbier, Jean-Benoit Boccaren et Thomas Catti, architectes diplômés et urbanistes, lauréats du concours Europan 17 sur le site du C.H.U. à Nantes (44) sont les fondateurs du collectif Matin. Par cette collaboration, ils cherchent à mettre en pratique une approche singulière de la transformation des territoires. Ils défendent une démarche qui se veut transversale, articulant territoire et architecture. Le projet comme possibilité de révéler et réactiver le déjà là et contribuer aux enjeux de sobriété devenus incontournables dans la mutation des territoires. Dans ce numéro de Com d'Archi Tom Barbier, Alan Benoit, Thomas Catti sont venus témoigner au nom de toute l'équipe, dans Com d'Archi, à la fois sur leurs parcours respectifs et sur ce projet Europan 17 : la transformation du site de l'immense hôpital de Nantes (ancien C.H.U.). Tous les nantais ont pratiqué cet hôpital de centre ville situé en bordure de Loire, mastodonte urbaine et architecture du XXe siècle conçue à l'américaine, qui appartient aujourd'hui au patrimoine urbain. Aujourd'hui l'hôpital étant repensé par un nouveau projet encore plus grand et relocalisé sur l'île de Nantes (Art & Build, Pargade, Artélia et Signes paysage en conception et Patriarche, Edeis et Builders and partners pour le suivi de travaux), de quoi hérite-t-on quant à l'ancien C.H.U. (architectes Michel Roux Sptiz et Louis Arretche) ? Comment redéfinir la relation à la ville pour quel usage ? Comment régénérer ce site très minéral ? Comment réhabiliter ce bord de Loire ?... Meet the wonderful René Barbier Meyer, head winemaker at Clos Mogador winery in Priorat, Spain. René is a winemaker who believes in being close to the land, the grapes, and juice so that he can make unique, artisan, gastronomic wines. In our interview, he shares his philosophy of winemaking, which is very similar to the way that a musician would describe making music - it is about feel, technique, and adaptation. René practices very low intervention winemaking because he wants the people to experience the wine as it was meant to be. He comes from a long line of winemakers who are French in origin, but who found their home in northern Spain, focusing on indigenous grapes and passionate winemaking. Vous les avez sans doute déjà remarquées : ces colonnes cylindriques tournant devant les salons de barbier, ornées de spirales bleu, blanc et rouge. On les croise encore aux États-Unis, en Europe ou en Asie. Mais pourquoi ces couleurs ? Et surtout, que viennent faire le bleu, le blanc et le rouge sur une enseigne de coiffeur ?Une origine médiévaleL'histoire commence bien avant le simple rasage de barbe. Au Moyen Âge, les barbiers n'étaient pas seulement des coiffeurs : ils pratiquaient aussi de petits actes médicaux. On les appelait parfois les “barbiers-chirurgiens”. Ils saignaient les patients pour “purger” le corps, selon la théorie des humeurs, posaient des ventouses, arrachaient des dents ou recousaient des plaies. Bref, c'étaient de véritables praticiens polyvalents.Le symbole des couleursLes couleurs de l'enseigne rappellent directement ces pratiques. Le rouge représente le sang. Le blanc, les bandages utilisés pour comprimer et arrêter l'hémorragie. Quant au bleu, il symboliserait les veines, c'est-à-dire la circulation sanguine que l'on cherchait à contrôler avec les saignées.À l'origine, les barbiers accrochaient réellement des bandages ensanglantés à l'extérieur, enroulés autour d'un bâton, pour signaler leur activité. Avec le temps, cette image s'est stylisée en spirale colorée.Un objet codifiéDans certains pays, comme en Angleterre dès le XIVᵉ siècle, l'activité des barbiers-chirurgiens a été réglementée. Ils avaient même une enseigne officielle : un poteau surmonté d'un bassin, rappelant celui où l'on recueillait le sang. Le cylindre rayé, que l'on connaît aujourd'hui, est l'héritier direct de cette tradition.Pourquoi ces couleurs sont restéesMême après la séparation des métiers — les chirurgiens devenant des praticiens à part entière, et les barbiers se concentrant sur la coiffure et le rasage —, les enseignes ont gardé ce code visuel. Aux États-Unis, le bleu, blanc et rouge a parfois été interprété comme un clin d'œil patriotique aux couleurs du drapeau. Mais l'origine véritable reste médicale. En Europe, certaines enseignes n'affichent d'ailleurs que le rouge et le blanc.ConclusionL'enseigne de barbier est donc bien plus qu'un simple logo coloré. C'est un vestige d'un temps où se faire couper la barbe pouvait aller de pair avec… une petite saignée.
