Editing books (Part 1) with Russel D McLean & Linda Nagle: Russel and Linda, both editors, both writers, reveal to We’d Like A Word presenters Paul Waters and Stevyn Colgan the secrets of book editing and how they make your writing better. (Warning - includes lots of swearing.) Russel is the Scottish noir author of Ed's Dead (fast, funny and deadly) and the J McNee series. A Dundonian reader once commented on one of his books: "I've read that book. It was so awful I had to burn it!" (PW adds: I also read it. It was awfully good.) Linda is a screen writer and author of work published in Tales of the Female perspective (Chinbeard Books); Paladins (Near to the Knuckle); 6 x 6 x 6 (Ice Pick Books), Within Darkness and Light (Nothing Books), The Black Room Manuscripts, Vol. 3 (The Sinister Horror Company) and her own anthology – Stranger Companies. We talk about what structural and copy editors actually do, how they deal with rubbish writers who think they're prefect, how they dish out constructive criticism and why you should probably not write a sex scene and definitely never describe someone as having a "nonchalant nose". Other lessons - surprise does not equal tension (see The Sixth Sense), holding back tears is better than weeping, plot = character, abduction is better than murder (Denise Mina), simpler = more profound (says Hemmingway), "show, don't tell" does not mean referencing raised eyebrows in every third paragraph. We also bring in Jericho Writers, Harry Bingham, Duncan Bradshaw, Philip K Dick on hidden meanings, Splatter Punk, the Dystopian States of America, Beer and Book zoom talks with the Craft beer Shop in Little Chalfont, hermaneutics, Haverill House, Theakston's Old Peculier, Stephen King, JK Rowling, Chain by Adrian McKinty, Dreyer's English, Jake Thackray, James Ellroy, Frederick Forsyth, Lawrence Block, Jack Reacher's kidney stones (surely he must have some?), Alan Guthrie, Gerard Brennan, Blasted Heath, Five Leaves bookshop, Severn House, and... why "jock" is the rudest word of all. Phew! That's loads. We'd Like A Word is a podcast and radio show from authors Paul Waters and Stevyn Colgan. We talk with writers, readers, celebrities, talkers, poets about books, songs, lyrics, speeches, scripts, fiction and non-fiction. We go out on various radio platforms and occasional Wednesdays on podcast. Looking For Eric (2009) with Andrew Graves - Screenplay by Paul Laverty

‘Looking For Eric' is a pretty unique film. A postal worker from Manchester in the middle of a personal crisis suddenly finds himself talking to the apparition of the legendary French player Eric Cantona, and attempts to turn his life around in order to have another shot at happiness. Paul Laverty's screenplay is a reflection on aging, memory, mistakes, community, family and football. There was plenty to discuss in this episode, and I was joined by Andrew Graves, the author of the new book ‘Welcome to the Cheap Seats: Silver Screen Portrayals of the British Working Class'. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about this branch of cinema, from ‘Saturday Night and Sunday Morning' to ‘This is England'. You can buy it here from the publisher, Five Leaves. *** Want to comment, get news and join episode discussions? Join the community on Syncify: https://syncify.fm/podcast/the-21st-rewrite. John D. Burns is a mountaineer, storyteller and author. His first two books, The Last Hillwalker and Bothy Tales, were self-published bestsellers and were both shortlisted for TGO Magazine’s Outdoor Book of the Year. Earlier this year John joined Vertebrate Publishing with a three book deal to produce new paperback editions of The Last Hillwalker and Bothy Tales alongside his latest title, the novel Sky Dance, all published in September. John is currently working on his next title, Wild Winter, which is due to be published in Autumn 2020. John is a gifted storyteller and his performance poetry and one-man plays have taken him across the country from the Edinburgh Fringe to mountain festivals, bookshops to theatres and back again. His passion for the hills, mountaineering, bothies and keeping ’The Great Outdoors’ great and accessible to all is clear and infectious.I met John at the incredible independent Nottingham bookshop, Five Leaves, just before one of his events to chat about his life in wild and wonderful places, the lure of snow and how both of these influence his writing.Sky Dance is John’s first novel. It is a gripping read and view into the beauty of rural and wild Scotland, but also delves into the politics of land ownership, raptor persecution and conservation, challenging readers to face issues that surround the protection and access to some of the UK’s last wild places. To read it for yourself you can order signed copies from www.v-publishing.co.uk where we’re running a 30% off sitewide deal until Sunday 17 November, or keep an eye out for other offers in the run up to Christmas, including a 3 for 2 on all John’s titles. We’ll be back again in a fortnight, with an interview between two climbing legends; Jerry Moffatt and Pete Whittaker – be sure to join us for that. On today's episode of THE FOOD SEEN, Jud Mongell & Ken Addington, are partners in Brooklyn cornerstone all day cafe Five Leaves, and it's adjacent Latin inspired bar/restaurant Nights & Weekends. Recently they're gone west, opening L.A. Chapter at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, and King's Highway in Palm Springs. How did a place on the edge of hipster Williamsburg, find manifest destiny in a Grass Fed Burger with Fried Pineapple, Pickled Beets, Harissa Mayo, and a Sunny Up Egg? Can you believe it all started on two islands, oceans apart from each other? Jud's upbringing in New Zealand, and Ken from the St. Thomas US Virgin Island, both eventually calling New York City their homes. While Ken's mom worked for the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, organizing bus tours of the borough decades before it was popular, he found himself in a Manhattan kitchen at 15 years old, working for the likes of Thomas Keller. Jud, just really wanted good strong coffee, and planned on serving Oceania fare. A bus now passes by Five Leaves every day, people get on, people get off. This reminds both Ken & Jud, that their spots are for everyone, everyday, just as a neighborhood joint should be. This program was brought to you by Whole Foods Market. “The goal was to have a friendly place. to have people walk in the door and make everybody a regular.” [15:00] “Greenpoint and Brooklyn have grown up a bit.. our customers have grown up a bit.. we want to grow up with them.” [20:00] –Ken Addington on THE FOOD SEEN

Gillian Darley and David McKie’s study of Nairn - Ian Nairn: Words in Place – published by Five Leaves, reintroduces to a new generation an architectural critic whose work has influenced writers and critics such as J.G. Ballard, Will Self, Iain Sinclair and Jonathan Meades, who once described Nairn as ‘a great poet of the metropolis’. Gillian Darley and David McKie discussed Ian Nairn’s life and work, and Owen Hatherley, author of A New Kind of Bleak and A Guide to the New Ruins of Great Britain chaired this discussion. Because a house certainly cannot have four, or six leaves. That just wouldn't do. What’s this?! A podcast releasing on schedule?! Why yes… yes it is! The OSMcast_!_ once again returns faithfully to your audio-listening side as we discuss Natsume Ono’s House of Five Leaves, with the manga being released by Viz Media and the anime being streamed online by FUNimation. If you are already a smart, lovely, and amazing person that already knew about the wonders of House of Five Leaves, then would you like to try an awesome visual novel-styled game that isn’t porn? Perhaps a murder mystery? Might we suggest you take a look over at sakevisual? While you folks are working on that, we’ll be heading out to super hot and also steamy Baltimore, Maryland this weekend for an exciting adventure at Otakon. It will be exciting! And adventrous! And at some point I’m sure we’ll be telling you all about it. In podcast form.

Hulu has lots of things on it, that you can watch. Like House of Five Leaves. You should watch that. It's pretty great. What’s this?! A new podcast? INDEED IT IS! And lo and behold, it’s another roundtable episode! We had some really good feedback the last time we did it, so we’ve decided to keep doing them whenever we think up a topic we can round about at a table. This time, we talk about Online or Internet TV, specifically online streaming for the most part. OSMnotes Okay so sometimes it’s every other _other _week. It happens! Maybe next time we won’t try and cram two cons in a month… No we probably will! Especially when they are as fun as HamaCon and SeishunCon.
