In this solo episode, Alissa explores one of the most deeply ingrained patterns she sees in highly sensitive people: the belief that having needs makes you a burden. For HSPs, this is a story that gets built early, when your emotional reactions were “too big”, when your needs felt different from everyone else's, and when the people around you responded with frustration instead of understanding. That story then follows you into adulthood, into relationships, and even into restaurants where you over-apologize to the waitress for ordering plain chicken. You'll Learn:Why HSPs are especially vulnerable to good girl conditioning and how it shows up in relationships, work, and healthWays you may be getting something out of being the over-apologizing, people pleaser that ends up keeping you stuck. How your triggers in moments of self-advocacy are actually your best opportunities to build self-worthWhat it means to expand your tolerance for discomfort so other people's reactions stop running the showWhy letting people help you, and asking for what you need, is a signal of openness, not weaknessUncover your sneaky internal belief that's stopping you from being your most confident self TAKE The FREE Shadow Archetype Quiz NOWLearn my 6-step process for managing & neutralizing your triggers as an HSP in our FREE UN-Botherable Workshop!Join the Not Too Sensitive Club

"Anything will work again, as long as you unplug it long enough, even you." This simple principle serves as the heartbeat for reclaiming a life dedicated to authentic human depth. In a world optimized for digital efficiency and "frictionless" convenience, the true currency of a meaningful life remains the unscalable power of independent thought, presence, and intentional effort. In this episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times, Ashleigh Spiliopoulou explores the growing cultural movement of "Friction Maxing" — the intentional reintroduction of effort, inconvenience, and presence into our daily routines. Ashleigh shares insights from her month-long experiment with deliberate inconvenience, including rawdogging a 24-hour flight to Australia and ditching her headphones on daily runs. Together, the conversation dives into the rise of mainstream AI infiltration, the psychological dangers of AI Psychosis and FOBO (Fear Of Becoming Obsolete), and why healthy friction is ultimately the secret weapon for nervous system regulation, creative clarity, and deep human connection. 10 Memorable Quotes: "In a world of frictionless design, what if we friction maxed a couple things to add a little bit of meaning back into life?" "The more efficient and outsourced we get through really well-designed technology, the more it feels like life is kind of evaporating from us." "Why would I think for myself when AI could think for me?" "Frictionless isn't bad in every scenario." "The process was so beautiful, and then the result was so satisfying." "AI has so much potential and brilliance for so many areas of our lives, but it shouldn't be designed to replace our brain." "It's not necessarily teaching people something new. It's reminding them, this is how you used to live." "First we need to unlearn." "It's rebellious. It's so fun." "Anything will work again, as long as you unplug it long enough, even you." 10 Key Takeaways: The Origin of Friction Maxing: Exploring Catherine Jezer-Morton's January 2026 article in The Cut magazine that sparked a mainstream conversation on adding intentional effort to life. The Falsehood of Frictionless Relationships: Reflecting on Esther Perel's cultural work and how eliminating interpersonal friction directly fuels the loneliness epidemic. The Threat of Cognitive Decay: How outsourcing daily thought processes to technology results in a tangible feeling of your brain disintegrating. Understanding AI Psychosis: Confronting the psychological danger of over-trusting automated companions until you completely lose trust in your own mind. Dismantling FOBO: Analyzing the "Fear Of Becoming Obsolete" and how surrendering creativity and discernment to AI attacks our baseline human self-worth. The No-Headphone Run: Why leaving audio stimulation at home forced a deeper focus on surroundings, leading to a fresher, more imaginative brain. The Gesture of Friendship: How exchanging a frictionless voice note for a handwritten letter to Boston reestablished a visceral, emotional sense of connection. Rawdogging a Flight: The profound creative clarity that emerged from enduring a 24-hour flight to Australia completely detached from movies, podcasts, or Wi-Fi. Unlearning for a 180 World: Recognizing that surviving the modern technological landscape requires us to actively unlearn automatic habits to relearn how to think. Architected Attention: Understanding that tech companies deliberately engineer frictionless designs solely to fork over your attention, money, and will. About our Guest: Ashleigh Spiliopoulou is a freelance journalist and health writer specializing in women's health, travel, and culture. A former heptathlete, her words have appeared in prominent publications including Condé Nast Traveller, Marie Claire, Women's Health, Stylist, Dazed, and Glamour. She is also the Co-Founder of Sunnie Runners, an inclusive London-based run club, and SOLA, a supper club designed for women looking to build personal and professional connections. Built on a foundation of storytelling, her work advocates for the vital necessity of using creative friction to protect human meaning and connection.
Do you store your cups upright or upside down in the cupboard? That sparks a surprisingly heated debate, along with fantasy casting themselves as the main character in any show, and revealing the most famous person they could call who would actually pick up. They also get into the pettiest, least valuable thing you could steal to completely inconvenience someone for a day, and share their oddly specific niche group memberships — from “Brown Photographers Under 5'6” to “Church-Going Cheesecake Lovers.”
A frustrating morning over a car's internet outage turned into a powerful wake-up call when I arrived at a charity tournament and heard a mother speak about losing her child to a rare, 100% fatal brain disease. That moment, along with a friend losing a twin and another watching his brother fade, forced me to get brutally honest with myself: most of what I was calling problems were nothing more than inconveniences. In this episode, I break down the difference between real problems and inconveniences, and give you a practical framework to reframe your situation and find the light even in your darkest moments. Key Takeaways If your health and safety are not at risk, it is not a problem — it is an inconvenience. If money can solve it, it is not a true problem because a solution exists. There is always something good inside a bad situation — even when your mind defaults to "nothing is good here." Many so-called problems disappear entirely when you simply stop giving them energy and attention. Looking back at frustrating moments often reveals the real source of your emotions had nothing to do with the situation itself. Action Steps When you feel overwhelmed by a situation, pause and ask yourself: "Is my health or safety actually at risk?" If not, relabel it as an inconvenience and stop feeding it problem-level energy. In any bad situation, force yourself to identify at least one thing that is genuinely good — this breaks the mental spiral and opens the door to reframing your direction. After you work through a tough moment, reflect on what was really driving your frustration. Chances are the surface issue was covering something deeper, and recognizing that shows you how much better off you truly are. Notable Quote If you close your eyes as tight as you can, light still finds its way through — it is the same thing with problems. There is always something good.

Join WNYC and Theater Of War for a series of programs hosted by Kai Wright and TOW artistic director Bryan Doerries that re-imagine works of journalism in innovative and engaging ways, including performances by acclaimed actors. Actors Adepero Oduye (12 Years a Slave, Pariah, The Big Short) and Jumaane Williams (NYC Public Advocate) performed “Our Longing for Inconvenience,” a recent essay written by Hanif Abdurraqib for The New Yorker. The essay helped kick off a conversation with WNYC listeners about “falling in love the old fashioned way” in a world mediated by phones and apps. We explored the tension between our desire for convenience and the friction of older technologies — like Walkmans, disposable cameras, and VCRs — that transport us back to less distracted, seemingly more authentic, times. And we talked about strategies for staying present and resisting the allure of instant gratification to feel more alive.
Series: To the Ends of the Earth
Lately, more people have been gravitating towards outdated technology, like Walkman, VHS tapes, record players, and more. What is behind this drive towards old tech? Is it nostalgia, or a desire to disconnect? Hanif Abdurraquib, contributing writer for The New Yorker, discusses his new piece "Our Longing for Inconvenience," and listeners share what outdated technology they have included in their own lives. In this preparatory message delivered just before the Billy Burke Miracle Healing Crusade, Pastor Rhonda Davis at Church of the Harvest speaks on the divine mechanics of breakthroughs. Drawing from the biblical account of the widow and the jars of oil, she explores how God uses our "empty places" as the very containers for His extraordinary provision. Key Highlights Making Room for the Extraordinary: Pastor Rhonda emphasizes that miracles require space. Whether it's the physical vessel of the church building or the spiritual vessel of our hearts, we must intentionally "make room" for God to move. The Inconvenience of the Divine: Recounting stories of missionaries staying in her childhood home, Pastor Rhonda notes that anointing often comes with inconvenience. Making space for God may disrupt our schedules, but the visitation is always worth the cost. The "Now" Moment: Addressing the crisis of the widow in 2 Kings 4, Pastor Rhonda explains that God isn't interested in just discussing the past. He meets us in the raw, authentic "now" of our desperation. Childlike Expectation: Using the story of a young girl bringing an umbrella to a prayer meeting for rain, she challenges the congregation to increase their "expectation trigger." Logic is good, but faith must remain creative and expectant. The Power of Shutting the Door: A critical step in the widow's miracle was shutting the door behind her. Pastor Rhonda explains that we must "shut the door" on critics, mourners, and the voices of doubt to allow the oil of the Spirit to flow. The Widow's Miracle: A Spiritual Framework Step Action Spiritual Principle 1 Cry Out Authenticity is the beginning of the miracle. Don't dress up your mess. 2 Identify What You Have God starts with what you have (the "little oil"), not what you lack. 3 Gather Empty Vessels God doesn't just add to what is full; He fills what is emptied out. 4 Shut the Door Protect your miracle from outside critics and "mourners." 5 Start Pouring Obedience is the active container for the miracle. Pour before you see the multiplication. Core Message: Extraordinary Grace for Empty Places Pastor Rhonda thunders a word of encouragement to those feeling "void" or "without form." Just as the Spirit hovered over the darkness in Genesis, God has extraordinary grace for the empty places in our lives. "Don't curse the empty places. Don't let them mock you. Every time that empty place tries to get your focus, start saying to the Lord: 'I know you are the God who fills this. You've done it before, and You will do it again.'" Scriptures Mentioned Habakkuk 1:5: "Watch and be utterly amazed... I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe even if you were told." 2 Kings 4:1-7: The story of the widow's oil and the empty jars. Genesis 1:1-3: The Spirit hovering over the void before creation. Ezekiel 16:6: "And when I passed by you and saw you struggling in your own blood, I said to you... 'Live!'" Closing Challenge: Bring Your Umbrella As the church prepares for a week of healing services, Pastor Rhonda leaves the congregation with a final image: the "Red Umbrella." She urges everyone to live with an active expectation of a "suddenly," believing that the oil of God's provision will never run dry as long as there is an empty vessel ready to receive it. My program : Let's read a Japanese novel 1️⃣ Short English Summary:In this episode, Noriko talks about “luxury time” and “analog experiences” in our modern digital world. She begins by sharing a recent visit to the cinema in Liverpool. The tickets and popcorn were expensive, and the movie itself was not very good. However, she realized that watching a film without checking her smartphone for two hours felt like a luxury.Noriko reflects on what “luxury” means today. For her, luxury is not expensive hotels or restaurants, but cultural experiences such as going to museums, concerts, events, or reading quietly in a café.She also talks about analog choices in a digital world. Because we are constantly connected to smartphones, the internet, and AI, many people feel information fatigue. Noriko shares how she limits her social media time and tries to reconnect with slower, more intentional experiences. For example, one of her students built a mechanical analog watch, and her husband started wearing a traditional watch again to check the time during meetings without using his phone.Noriko also joined two meetups in Liverpool: a Quiet Book Club and a philosophy discussion group. Although she is introverted, meeting people face-to-face felt refreshing and meaningful. She concludes that choosing slightly inconvenient, analog experiences—like going to the cinema, reading books, or meeting people in person—may actually be a modern form of luxury.2️⃣ Vocabulary List (for understanding the episode)贅沢(ぜいたく) — luxury文化的(ぶんかてき) — cultural特別展示(とくべつてんじ) — special exhibition情報(じょうほう) — information情報疲れ(じょうほうづかれ) — information fatigue悪循環(あくじゅんかん) — vicious cycle制限する(せいげんする) — to limit / control腕時計(うでどけい) — wristwatch部品(ぶひん) — parts / components組み立てる(くみたてる) — to assemble通知(つうち) — notification便利(べんり) — convenient不便(ふべん) — inconvenient確認する(かくにんする) — to check / confirm集まる(あつまる) — to gather実際に(じっさいに) — in reality / in person新鮮(しんせん) — fresh / new feeling体験(たいけん) — experience傾向(けいこう) — tendency選ぶ(えらぶ) — to choose

We're talking about why you should stop apologizing for asking for what you need.. whether that's packing your own food for a flight or making a specific request at a restaurant. You're allowed. We also got into simple meals and how even basic food can feel like a full experience when you pay attention to texture, temperature, and flavor, the reason so many people are addicted to chaos, why being bored is actually good for you, and the power of pausing before you react to a feeling or thought. If everything in your shop ran perfectly, you'd never actually get better. Think about that for a second. Today on Talkin' Shop, Brandon Bombardo and Nick Peters dig into a topic every business owner deals with but nobody really talks about — inconvenience. The delays. The missed deadlines. The customer who changes the scope at the last minute. It all feels personal in the moment, but the truth is, it's just part of running a real business. Brandon got the idea for this episode from his own experience with a travel insurance headache. He was told his refund would take six weeks instead of seven days. Instead of blowing up on the phone, he stayed calm, explained his situation, and the rep expedited the whole thing. That one conversation became the blueprint for this entire discussion — how you respond matters way more than what happened. The guys talk about why expecting a frictionless path is one of the fastest ways to create stress you don't need. Machines break down. Suppliers miss ship dates. Employees make mistakes. None of that means your business is failing. It means your business is real. The shops that stay steady through those moments are the ones still standing five and ten years from now. They also share practical ways to handle disruption — normalize it so it doesn't hit so hard, build flexibility into your schedule, keep your ego out of it, and focus on the quality of your response instead of trying to control things you can't. Before all that, the guys answer three listener questions: why manual tool calibration beats electronic switches for MDF doors, how to choose between cabinet software like Mozaik and Cab Builder, and how CNC equipment financing actually breaks down. Spoiler — a ShopSabre machine works out to about $25 an hour. Good luck finding an employee for that. Bottom line: inconvenience isn't blocking your progress. It's usually a sign that progress is happening. Changes will not happen without inconvenience. Make Room for Inconvenience // Rev. Jarrett Wallace by Chapel Roswell
Farah Naz Rishi is a busy do-er with fingers in many creative pies. She's worked as a lawyer, a video-game journalist, a voice actor and is a bestselling author. Farah has written memoir, 'Sorry for the Inconvenience', which details her experience as a Pakistan-American Muslim Woman, also has published many Young Adult books, including 'If You're Not The One', and 'It All Comes Back to You'.Now, Farah has published, 'The Flightless Birds of New Hope'. Here's the blurb...We follow Aden Shah—who has made a career of running away when things get hard— as he reunites with his estranged siblings in the wake of their parents' death. Tensions flare. And in a single moment of resentment, Aden sets free their parents' favorite “child”: their prize-winning Major Mitchell's cockatoo, Coco Chanel. What follows is a reluctant, chaotic road trip in a beat-up RV as the three Shah siblings chase Coco across the country. Along the way, they crash headlong into the eccentric world of birders, and into the unfamiliar people they've become. We discuss exploring connections, nature and sibling relationships. Also, you can hear how her work as a voice-actor influences her ability to get into character, and why she's ditched word-counts.You can hear how Farah shuts off her anxiety with wallpaper, how she tricks herself into writing, and about the first idea she had for her story.Get a copy of the book - uk.bookshop.org/shop/writersroutineThis week's episode is sponsored by 'Minding Toby', the new novel by M.M. Neoborn Caveman delivers a pro-humanity critique of compliance experiments reshaping choices into cages, exposing how banks, parking, and services add friction to analog options through app mandates while presenting digital paths as convenient, warns of inertia leading to total tracking where refusal becomes suspicious, highlights how each reasonable rung builds inescapable infrastructure linking to digital IDs and programmable currency, and urges embracing inconvenience now through cash use and analog insistence to preserve autonomy before alternatives vanish.Key TakeawaysCompliance relies on voluntary inertia.Friction disguises digital mandates.Analog alternatives become burdensome.Normalization expands control scope.Refusal signals wrongdoing in systems.Infrastructure locks in surveillance.Inconvenience preserves future options.Cash maintains independent choices.Awareness breaks gradual entrapment.Humanity requires deliberate resistance.Sound Bites"Have you noticed how we're living through the largest compliance experiment in human history, and most people think they're just getting better customer service?""The world is being reshaped so that certain choices become nearly impossible to make.""Many banks now require app-based authentication for anything beyond basic logins.""Don't have a smartphone? Well, you can visit a branch during business hours—assuming there's still one near you, and assuming you can get there when it's actually open.""It's friction disguised as security. Inconvenience packaged as protection.""Have you tried to park somewhere recently without an app? Tried to access certain government services without downloading something?""Each system, taken individually, seems reasonable. Each one offers an analog alternative. Technically.""But have you noticed how those alternatives work? They're slower. They require extra steps. They make you feel like you're being difficult.""What we're watching is a carefully constructed ladder where each rung seems reasonable in isolation.""Once the infrastructure is fully digital, fully tracked, fully programmable—asking nicely for your freedom back isn't going to cut it."Join the tea house at patreon.com/theneoborncavemanshow —free to enter, real talk, lives, no ads, no algorithms.keywords: compliance experiments, app mandates, analog friction, digital cage, voluntary control, surveillance normalization, digital ids, programmable currency, autonomy loss, resistance inconvenienceHumanity centered satirical takes on the world & news + music - with a marble mouthed host.Free speech marinated in comedy.Supporting Purple Rabbits.Viva los Conejos Morados. What if we told you the key to a more fulfilling life is by making yourself a little....uncomfortable?We're not just talking about reducing scroll time on your phone or fighting the urge to binge watch a show. We're talking about doing the grocery shopping for a friend that you're about to pick up from the airport, or actually following through on dinner plans you committed to even though you maybe aren't in the mood anymore. The things that inconvenience us, but help create a sense of community and genuine belonging.Host Catherine Jette speaks to Israa Nasir, psychotherapist and author of Toxic Productivity. She also authored a Substack called 'A good life is inconvenient. We need to escape the cult of convenience'. The two discuss how to master the art of friction-maxxing, how to draw back on the systems and technologies that replace basic skills, and how to get comfortable being uncomfortable. The holidays are an unusually social time, filled with parties and family get-togethers. But for most of the year, we feel isolated and unsatisfied with our social lives. Our society isn't structured to support connection year-round. So it's an apt time to re-air this episode — a conversation with the writer Sheila Liming about rediscovering the lost art of hanging out.Liming is an associate professor of professional writing at Champlain College and the author of “Hanging Out: The Radical Power of Killing Time.” In the book, Liming investigates the troubling fact that we've grown much less likely to simply spend time together outside our partnerships, workplaces and family units. What would it look like to reconfigure our world to make social connection easier for all of us?I spoke to Liming in April 2023. But I find that this conversation provides a clearer sense of what's gone wrong in our social lives — and how to make “hanging out” with others more fulfilling.Note: We're still gathering questions for an upcoming "Ask Me Anything" episode we'd like to record.
