In this episode, we sit down with Gabe Klein, former Executive Director of the U.S. Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, to explore the evolution of America's mobility landscape. With a rich background spanning roles as Commissioner of Transportation in both Washington, D.C., and Chicago, and as a former executive at Zipcar, Gabe brings a multifaceted perspective on urban innovation and transportation electrification. We delve into the inception and achievements of the Joint Office, discussing how it bridged the Department of Energy and the Department of Transportation to deploy a nationwide electric vehicle charging network. Gabe shares insights into the challenges and successes of this unprecedented interagency collaboration, including the establishment of uniform charging standards and the promotion of equitable access to EV infrastructure.Beyond his federal tenure, Gabe reflects on his entrepreneurial ventures, such as co-founding CityFi, and his authorship of "Start-Up City," offering lessons on fostering public-private partnerships and driving systemic change in urban environments. We also discuss the current state of EV infrastructure, the importance of resilient and user-friendly charging networks, and the role of innovation in shaping sustainable cities.Join us for a thought-provoking conversation that traverses the intersections of technology, policy, and human-centered design in the quest for a cleaner, more connected future.
The role of mayor is uniquely important in U.S. government, as an elected arguably closest to the results of governance in the everyday lives of constituents. Considering the influential power of cities in innovation, economic growth and sustainable development, mayors are also often required to navigate politics and publicity at national and international levels—even as they rise above political polarization and focus on practical solutions for the wellbeing of their communities. Over the past decade, the City of Mesa, like several of its mid- to large-sized peers throughout the Ten Across region, has been remarkable for its ongoing growth and transformation. Complexities of climate change, natural resources, and both domestic and international migration notwithstanding, Mesa has attracted billions of dollars in private sector investments and has outgrown Miami, FL, and Atlanta, GA, in population size. Mayor John Giles has led Mesa since 2014, and in his current, final term as mayor, has redoubled his work to further the city's national visibility and appeal as an affordable, livable hub for recreation and economic opportunity. At least as noteworthy, however, may be Mayor Giles's ability to defy political partisanship—as evidenced most recently by the national news of his endorsement, as a Republican, of Vice President Kamala Harris's candidacy in the 2024 presidential election. Listen in as Ten Across founder Duke Reiter and Mesa Mayor John Giles reflect on the mayor's ten years of service and his hand in Mesa's transformation from a humble desert suburb into a burgeoning tech and climate innovation hub. *Note this episode was recorded prior to Vice President Kamala Harris' selection of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. Atlas Public Policy rings in the new year with Gabe Klein, Executive Director of the U.S. Joint Office of Energy and Transportation. In this episode, we'll hear about what impacts the Joint Office has made thus far, what they hope to accomplish in 2024, and how those efforts will affect the wider EV and charging markets in the United States to drive us toward a zero-emission transportation future.
Gabe Klein, executive director of the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, argues that there is no electric vehicle sales slowdown. The segment is growing, and the charging infrastructure to support it will be “private sector-led and government-enabled,” he said.
Gabe Klein, Executive Director of the US Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, joins the ITE Talks Transportation podcast to talk about transportation electrification in the United States. He discusses how his newly created office is working to help deploy its share of the US Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to build out infrastructure across the country to support various aspects of electrification, and how local and state entities can take advantage of the funding. He also talks about the technological advances taking place in the space and how data sharing will help expand the advantages of adopting electrification.

This week Oliver interviews Caroline Sampanaro, Head of Micromobility and Transit Policy at Lyft, about her role and opportunities for micromobility to participate in conversations about better transport systems and cities. They also talk a lot about the shared business model, and why PPP feels like the most logical endpoint for a lot of the shared use cases for micromobility. We have continually been struck by the great team that Lyft has built - check out our earlier conversations with Laura Fox, GM of Citibike in NY for reference - and we really enjoyed this conversation with Caroline. Also referenced is episode 170 with Julia Thayne DeMourdant and Gabe Klein, which you can listen to here. Unfortunately, we lost the end of the audio for this the first time around and had to go back and rerecord the end. Our awesome editor Lynda has managed to get this sounding good, but just a heads up about it towards the end. In this episode they discuss: - Caroline's background as an activist and how it led her to shared micromobility policy - The story of Lyft's micromobility business - how it came about and why they've chosen the strategy they have with PPP docked bikeshare vs freefloating. - Getting micromobility away from identity politics - What has electric vs. acoustic offered to the advocacy conversation? - What is the role of companies like Lyft in micromobility advocacy vs. (for example) vehicle producers etc. - How do we get a broad coalition of advocates that can tackle the status quo? If you want to see the latest vehicles and be in the most cutting-edge conversations about micromobility, you should check out Micromobility Europe, our premier event happening in Amsterdam on the 8/9th of June. We're expecting over 1000 of the top thinkers and doers in the micro space to be there and I am pumped with the amazing vehicles that are coming down the pipe that will be there. This week we are releasing another episode from the Micromobility world catalogue – this one is a conversation between Gabe Klein, the first person to head the newly formed Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, and Julia Thayne, our Micromobility world Cohost. Gabes' job is to break down barriers to electrifying transportation. We've had him on the podcast before for episode 122 for what was one of the top episodes of the year. Before he took his current role, he has held a number of really interesting roles as a Zipcar exec and chief of the Washington DC and Chicago DOTs. He joins Julia to discuss the role small electric vehicles can play in America's EV transformation. He's a self confessed ebike nut and it was awesome to have him join to talk micromobility. Learn more about Gabe and what he does, via his website here In this episode they tackle: - The new role that Gabe has taken on and what it's scope is - How he thinks about micromobility in the overall scope of electrification of transport in the US and the role that it can play - The lack of ebike subsidy that was in the IRA, and what other programmes are doing to support their adoption - The role of government in rolling out electrification of transport And with that, here's Gabe and Julia. The infrastructure spending bill enacted earlier this year includes $7.5 billion to install chargers for electric cars. In response, the Energy and Transportation Departments set up a joint office. For what the office will do and how it'll do it, Federal Drive host Tom Temin spoke with its newly appointed director, Gabe Klein.
With nearly 30% of greenhouse gas emissions coming from the transportation sector, decarbonizing the system is an essential step on the road to a zero-emission future. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law of 2021 and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 significantly bolstered the federal government's efforts to mitigate climate change—former establishing a new joint office between the Department of Transpiration and the Department of Energy to work toward that end.Listen in as Ten Across founder Duke Reiter discusses these efforts with executive director of the new Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, Gabe Klein and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Sustainable Transportation at the Department of Energy, Michael Berube. For more information about the Ten Across initiative visit www.10across.com.

Do you have friends that are a bad influence? It has been said many times that you will become a combination of the closest people around you. Today, we are going to dive into why this is so important and what action you can take. To make changes in your life, you have to change how you are spending your time. Call to Order:This week's call to order is to evaluate the people that you spend the most time with. Are they a positive influence? If you want to be healthier, be around people that are already doing it. If you want to be wealthier, be around people that are already there. Go to a conference or a networking event that is centered on something that you want to learn more about. Make connections and start making habits that will make you successful. Have you ever had a question from your child that you weren't prepared for? We've said this before, but parenting is hard. What's the hardest age to parent? Infants get a bad wrap and so do teenagers. What about pre-teens? Life seems busier than ever, but we feel that parenting in these modern times is harder or at the very least, more complicated than ever. Call to Order:Today's call to order is to just be there for your kids and get involved. Make sure that you aren't offloading the parenting responsibilities to teachers, coaches or other family members. Be their parent and you will see the rewards later. Kids don't always appreciate what they have until they get older and you need to remember to do what's best for them in the long term and not what's easy for you in the short term. Make yourself proud and make them appreciate being a great parent. Being a good parent doesn't mean doing what's easy or popular. We previously discussed what it takes to sell your house but what happens once you list it? There was a flurry of activity that most first-time sellers likely aren't expecting and we definitely didn't know what to expect. Nothing goes according to plan 100% and it's not as smooth as you may think. Today, we are going to cover 5 things that happened once we listed our house and some tips and extra info that popped up along our journey. Call To Order: Make a plan for potentially selling your home. If you were to take another job or have to make a sudden move, would you be ready? What if you were to put your home on the market and it doesn't sell as quickly as you would have hoped? Are you willing to put in more money for repairs or come down on your price? Do your research on the housing market, understand the language and how transactions are running now versus when you may have bought your home. Is it a seller's market or a buyer's market? Have a plan in mind and know where you're willing to compromise or stand your ground if needed.Follow us on Instagram: @thefamilyorderMusic: Waves Instrumental by Taylor Smith, Gabe Klein, Gideon Klein
This is our last episode of the Four Horsemen series from John Gottman. Stonewalling may sound innocent and harmless, but it can still be damaging to a relationship. Why do people stonewall? What could cause a person to shut people out, especially someone close to them? Call to Order:This week's call to order is to determine if you stonewall in your life or if someone is doing it to you. Don't get combative or confrontational but find a way, in a neutral setting, to gently ease into the conversation about what might be causing it. Only you know how to navigate the situation but focus on the outcome and the next steps and not the person. All relationships have conflict. This cannot be avoided or negotiated with. Managing conflict is vital in predicting success with conflict. This is our 3rd part of the 4-part series on the 4 Horsemen from John Gottman and today, we are going to talk about defensiveness. We will discuss what defensiveness means and what the antidote is for your relationship. Call to Order:Think about the last argument you had in your relationship. Try to identify when you were defensive and recognize what happened in that discussion. What made you defensive? What was the outcome? Think about what you would say differently and practice being less defensive and more solution-oriented. Today, we are going to talk about contempt. We see examples of this a lot in social interactions but it can become toxic. This is part 2 of our discussion on The Four Horsemen that can doom a relationship. We will discuss some examples of contempt, why it is so dangerous and solutions that can eliminate contempt. Call to Order:This week's call to order is to identify where you have contempt in your relationships. Work on replacing phrases that display contempt and make them more positive. Pick one relationship you have or one aspect of your relationship that has contempt and can be improved. Practice some self-talk to replace words of contempt with more positive communication.
