I am Judge Michael Randazzo, but by all odds, I never should have been. My story begins in a pop-up trailer—no electricity, no running water—born to parents who dropped out of high school and carried the weight of our family's excommunication from the Sicilian Mafia. I came into the world premature, delivered by a veterinarian, clinging to life while doctors warned I'd never catch up.Crime and tragedy run through my bloodline: moonshining, sexual abuse, attempted manslaughter. My father struck deals with the Mexican Cartel and still battles opioid addiction. Every member of my family has been both perpetrator and victim. Yet, somewhere between generational sin and the chance to start over, I clawed my way through law school. Today, I serve as one of Missouri's youngest Presiding Circuit Judges. This memoir is my confession and my exorcism. It's about the curse of inherited character flaws, the desperate hope to shield my children from them, and the heavy truth that even heroes—like my beloved Grandpa Nick—are deeply flawed. Each chapter opens a new door: from Grandpa Nick wrestling a grizzly bear to the darkest corners of family trauma, violence, and betrayal. What does it take to rise above a legacy of darkness? How do you reconcile love for those who did unspeakable things? My life is proof that the past shapes us—but it doesn't have to define us.https://amzn.to/49aGLhkBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
Circuit Judge Michael Randazzo is preparing to add “author” to his long list of accomplishments. His debut book, Presiding Over Shadows: From Chaos to Order in the Court, is scheduled for release on September 16, 2025.Randazzo's journey to the bench has been marked by resilience and achievement. A first-generation college graduate, he earned degrees in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Missouri–St. Louis, completing the Pierre Laclede Honors College program before obtaining his Juris Doctorate from Saint Louis University School of Law in 2010.By 2015, Randazzo was running his own law firm and was named to The National Trial Lawyers' Top 50 Under 40. His career as a prosecutor included more than 3,000 felony cases and 10,000 misdemeanors before he was elected Circuit Judge. In 2021, he was appointed to Missouri's 42nd Judicial Circuit and, within a year, became one of the youngest presiding circuit judges in state history. To date, he has participated in more than 75 jury trials.Blending memoir and true crime, Randazzo's forthcoming book delves into the challenges and contradictions of his life. “I have Italian roots that trace back to the Sicilian Mafia, including Al Capone's Chicago Outfit and the St. Louis Mafia,” Randazzo said. “The book details some crimes and victimization of my family members. It's about my family's history and how it made my path to the bench almost impossible. Even more specifically, it deals with my relationship with my grandfather, who was my hero, despite him being a deeply flawed man.”TwitterFacebookUnterrified DemocratBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Another unique episode, Rebels. Judge Randazzo felt the best way to come clean about any speculation about his family history was to write his book.It presents an honest accounting of his ancestors and the lives that they lived, even though they sharply contrast with the values that he holds as a circuit county judge. Definitely an interesting way to confront and make peace with one's history, don't you think? You'll notice that in this interview, as well as in his book, he's not making excuses, but delivering the cold hard truth. So, please check out his book (link listed below) for a real picture of dealing with generational sin is, okay? (Please notice I didn't make any bad jokes in this episode description-the man is STILL a judge, you know...) Boone County's presiding commissioner expects construction of the new multi-million dollar Boone County Sheriff's regional law enforcement training center in Columbia to be done by fall. Commissioner Kip Kendrick joined host Fred Parry in-studio Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle's "CEO Roundtable" program. “They're in there putting up drywall now and I think really starting to finish out the interior. The expected completion is they're hoping for the end of October, which is good," Kendrick tells listeners. Commissioner Kendrick expects the sheriff's Department to be in there by early January, with classes starting then too. The new facility will provide an all-in-one training center for law enforcement and first responders in Boone County, as well as those who serve statewide. Commissioner Kendrick also addressed numerous other topics during the one-hour interview with host Parry, including the public safety childcare center, the recent housing study, budget preparations and an update on tornado sirens:
GDP Script/ Top Stories for August 14th Publish Date: August 14th From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Thursday, August 14th and Happy birthday to Magic Johnson I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. Gwinnett students outperform state on many milestones tests — but trail in science Buford's David Clark joins race to be Georgia’s next lieutenant governor Police contacted weeks earlier due to CDC shooter's 'thoughts of suicide,' GBI says Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on Food Apps All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MONSTER JAM STORY 1: Gwinnett students outperform state on many milestones tests — but trail in science Gwinnett County Public Schools has some bragging rights—but also some glaring gaps. The latest Milestones and end-of-course test scores show the district outperforming the state in most areas, but science? That’s a different story. The eighth-grade science results are, frankly, shocking: just 0.3% of students scored proficient or higher. Compare that to 28% statewide. Yes, you heard that right—0.3%. GCPS says most of its eighth-graders take the tougher high school physical science test instead, but even there, only 44% hit proficiency, trailing the state’s 57%. There are bright spots, though. Fifth-grade science scores beat state averages, and high school biology students held their own. Math and social studies also showed solid results, with Gwinnett consistently outpacing state averages. English/language arts? Mixed bag. Less than half of students in every grade tested were proficient, with third-graders struggling the most—just 39% hit the mark. The district plans to dig into the data at the Aug. 21 school board meeting. STORY 2: Buford's David Clark joins race to be Georgia’s next lieutenant governor The race for Georgia’s next lieutenant governor just got more crowded. On Tuesday, Rep. David Clark, R-Buford, threw his hat in the ring, becoming the fifth state lawmaker to join the campaign. Clark’s announcement follows state Sen. Blake Tillery, R-Vidalia, who launched his campaign just a day earlier. Both Republicans are hitting familiar notes—tax cuts, immigration crackdowns, and opposition to transgender rights. They join Sens. John F. Kennedy and Steve Gooch, both running on MAGA-friendly platforms aimed squarely at Trump’s base. On the other side of the aisle, Sen. Josh McLaurin, D-Sandy Springs, is the lone Democrat in the race. A vocal Trump critic, McLaurin has made no secret of his disdain for the former president’s policies and legal defiance during this year’s legislative session. The lieutenant governor’s role? Presiding over the Senate and stepping in when the governor’s out. But this race? It’s shaping up to be anything but ordinary. STORY 3: Police contacted weeks earlier due to CDC shooter's 'thoughts of suicide,' GBI says The Georgia Bureau of Investigation shared new details Tuesday about Friday’s shooting outside the CDC’s Atlanta headquarters—a tragedy that left DeKalb County Officer David Rose dead and the suspect, Patrick Joseph White, 30, of Kennesaw, taking his own life. GBI Director Chris Hosey said White had no criminal history but had recently expressed suicidal thoughts, prompting a call to law enforcement weeks earlier. At White’s home, investigators found writings criticizing COVID-19 vaccines—angry, but not overtly threatening. White fired over 500 rounds, hitting six CDC buildings. His weapons, a mix of rifles and a shotgun, belonged to his father, who told investigators White broke into the gun safe. Officer Rose, one of the first responders, was fatally shot by White. “He died a hero,” said FBI Special Agent Paul Brown. “His sacrifice won’t be forgotten.” The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact the GBI tip line. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets 6 STORY 4: PCOM Georgia holds White Coat ceremony On Aug. 8, nearly 200 students from PCOM Georgia’s Physician Assistant and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine programs slipped into their crisp white coats for the first time—a moment that felt both surreal and monumental. The ceremony, held at the Gas South Convention Center, wasn’t just about the coats. It was about stepping into something bigger: the responsibility, the privilege, the weight of caring for others. Students recited their oath and class mission statement, pledging to lead with compassion and professionalism. For many, it wasn’t just a milestone—it was the start of a dream they’d been chasing for years. STORY 5: Trump throws support behind Jones’ bid for Georgia governor President Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind Lt. Gov. Burt Jones in Georgia’s governor’s race, giving his “complete and total” endorsement in a social media post Monday. Trump praised Jones as a loyal ally who worked “tirelessly” for his campaigns, calling him an early supporter of the MAGA movement. The endorsement could be a game-changer in the GOP primary, where Trump’s base still holds serious sway. Jones faces Attorney General Chris Carr, but he’s already got a fundraising edge—thanks to a 2021 law that lets him raise unlimited funds through a leadership committee. Carr, who doesn’t have that advantage, has taken the fight to federal court, accusing Jones of abusing the system. Meanwhile, the Democratic primary is heating up, with big names like Keisha Lance Bottoms, Jason Esteves, and Michael Thurmond already in the mix. We’ll be right back. Sometimes, it's not what someone says that matters, but who says it.If I were to tell you that I believe the chief justice of the United States is presiding over the end of the rule of law in this country, you might care, you might not care, you might think, There Anand goes again. But what if the person saying that is one of the most revered jurists in the conservative legal movement? What if he was considered by Republican presidents as a Supreme Court justice? What if he counted Antonin Scalia as his mentor, and helped ensure that Clarence Thomas ended up on the high court bench? What if the person, additionally, counted Chief Justice John Roberts as a personal friend? What if they were still friends? In that case, would it arrest you, would it make you take notice, if that person, with those credentials and relationships and history, were to say he believed his good friend was presiding over the end of the rule of the law in the United States?I hope it would.Because that is what just happened in a stark and fascinating interview I just had with former federal appellate Judge J. Michael Luttig.I asked him what he would say to his friend the chief justice. We got into it all. I pressed Judge Luttig on whether he believes Trump is a wild aberration, or rather a logical outgrowth of the conservative legal revolution of which Luttig was a card-carrying member.I asked him whether he believes corporate and oligarchic power have grown unjustifiably in American life, and, if so, whether that, in his view, was a bug or a feature of the right-wing legal revolution. And, on this July 4 eve, I asked him what he believes Thomas Jefferson would have made of Donald Trump. The judge has been sitting with the text of the Declaration of Independence in recent days, attempting to rewrite it for the usurpations and aspirations to freedom of 2025. I encourage everyone to read that at Telos. But first: Watch this entire conversation. Full Text of ReadingsSolemnity of Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Lectionary: 172The Saint of the day is Saint Cyril of AlexandriaSaint Cyril of Alexandria's Story Saints are not born with halos around their heads. Cyril, recognized as a great teacher of the Church, began his career as archbishop of Alexandria, Egypt, with impulsive, often violent, actions. He pillaged and closed the churches of the Novatian heretics—who required those who denied the faith to be re-baptized—participated in the deposing of Saint John Chrysostom, and confiscated Jewish property, expelling the Jews from Alexandria in retaliation for their attacks on Christians. Cyril's importance for theology and Church history lies in his championing the cause of orthodoxy against the heresy of Nestorius, who taught that in Christ there were two persons, one human and one divine. The controversy centered around the two natures in Christ. Nestorius would not agree to the title “God-bearer” for Mary. He preferred “Christ-bearer,” saying there are two distinct persons in Christ—divine and human—joined only by a moral union. He said Mary was not the mother of God but only of the man Christ, whose humanity was only a temple of God. Nestorianism implied that the humanity of Christ was a mere disguise. Presiding as the pope's representative at the Council of Ephesus in 431, Cyril condemned Nestorianism and proclaimed Mary truly the “God-bearer”—the mother of the one Person who is truly God and truly human. In the confusion that followed, Cyril was deposed and imprisoned for three months, after which he was welcomed back to Alexandria. Besides needing to soften some of his opposition to those who had sided with Nestorius, Cyril had difficulties with some of his own allies, who thought he had gone too far, sacrificing not only language but orthodoxy. Until his death, his policy of moderation kept his extreme partisans under control. On his deathbed, despite pressure, he refused to condemn the teacher of Nestorius. Reflection Lives of the saints are valuable not only for the virtue they reveal but also for the less admirable qualities that also appear. Holiness is a gift of God to us as human beings. Life is a process. We respond to God's gift, but sometimes with a lot of zigzagging. If Cyril had been more patient and diplomatic, the Nestorian church might not have risen and maintained power so long. But even saints must grow out of immaturity, narrowness, and selfishness. It is because they—and we—do grow, that we are truly saints, persons who live the life of God. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

So much to get to and we start with the buzzer beater in College Park. March is less than 48 hours away but with moments like that, it feels like we're already there. A quick run through the weeknight results of note, including more jockeying in the SEC, which Norlander doesn't think is going to get to 13 NCAAT bids because he's a hater. We clear the runway for John Fanta who stops by to discuss - among other things - St John's atop the Big East, why he chose to attend Seton Hall as an undergrad, the biggest pet peeves about college basketball coverage this time of year, his list of legitimate national championship contenders, and who the Browns should take at 2 in the upcoming NFL Draft. A real tour-de-force performance from Fanta, it should be said. Norlander & Hartzell run through the must-see TV games on deck this weekend, which is a solid A- slate according to the fellas. Let's enjoy the games, March is coming!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 474The Saint of the day is Saint John Paul IISaint John Paul II's Story “Open wide the doors to Christ,” urged John Paul II during the homily at the Mass where he was installed as pope in 1978. Born in Wadowice, Poland, Karol Jozef Wojtyla had lost his mother, father, and older brother before his 21st birthday. Karol's promising academic career at Krakow's Jagiellonian University was cut short by the outbreak of World War II. While working in a quarry and a chemical factory, he enrolled in an “underground” seminary in Kraków. Ordained in 1946, he was immediately sent to Rome where he earned a doctorate in theology. Back in Poland, a short assignment as assistant pastor in a rural parish preceded his very fruitful chaplaincy for university students. Soon Fr. Wojtyla earned a doctorate in philosophy and began teaching that subject at Poland's University of Lublin. Communist officials allowed Wojtyla to be appointed auxiliary bishop of Kraków in 1958, considering him a relatively harmless intellectual. They could not have been more wrong! Bishop Wojtyla attended all four sessions of Vatican II and contributed especially to its Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World. Appointed as archbishop of Kraków in 1964, he was named a cardinal three years later. Elected pope in October 1978, he took the name of his short-lived, immediate predecessor. Pope John Paul II was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. In time, he made pastoral visits to 124 countries, including several with small Christian populations. John Paul II promoted ecumenical and interfaith initiatives, especially the 1986 Day of Prayer for World Peace in Assisi. He visited Rome's main synagogue and the Western Wall in Jerusalem; he also established diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Israel. He improved Catholic-Muslim relations, and in 2001 visited a mosque in Damascus, Syria. The Great Jubilee of the Year 2000, a key event in John Paul's ministry, was marked by special celebrations in Rome and elsewhere for Catholics and other Christians. Relations with the Orthodox Churches improved considerably during his papacy. “Christ is the center of the universe and of human history” was the opening line of John Paul II's 1979 encyclical, Redeemer of the Human Race. In 1995, he described himself to the United Nations General Assembly as “a witness to hope.” His 1979 visit to Poland encouraged the growth of the Solidarity movement there and the collapse of communism in central and eastern Europe 10 years later. John Paul II began World Youth Day and traveled to several countries for those celebrations. He very much wanted to visit China and the Soviet Union, but the governments in those countries prevented that. One of the most well-remembered photos of John Paul II's pontificate was his one-on-one conversation in 1983, with Mehmet Ali Agca, who had attempted to assassinate him two years earlier. In his 27 years of papal ministry, John Paul II wrote 14 encyclicals and five books, canonized 482 saints and beatified 1,338 people. In the last years of his life, he suffered from Parkinson's disease and was forced to cut back on some of his activities. Pope Benedict XVI beatified John Paul II in 2011, and Pope Francis canonized him in 2014. Reflection Before John Paul II's funeral Mass in St. Peter's Square, hundreds of thousands of people had waited patiently for a brief moment to pray before his body, which lay in state inside St. Peter's for several days. The media coverage of his funeral was unprecedented. Presiding at the funeral Mass, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger—then dean of the College of Cardinals and later Pope Benedict XVI—concluded his homily by saying: “None of us can ever forget how, in that last Easter Sunday of his life, the Holy Father, marked by suffering, came once more to the window of the Apostolic Palace and one last time gave his blessing urbi et orbi (‘to the city and to the world'). “We can be sure that our beloved pope is standing today at the window of the Father's house, that sees us and blesses us. Yes, bless us, Holy Father. We entrust your dear soul to the Mother of God, your Mother, who guided you each day and who will guide you now to the glory of her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.” Learn more about Saint John Paul II! Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
Full Text of ReadingsMonday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 467The Saint of the day is Blessed Carlo AcutisBlessed Carlo Acutis’ Story Born in London and raised in Milan, Carlo's wealthy parents were not particularly religious. Upon receiving his first communion at age seven, Carlo became a frequent communicant, making a point of praying before the tabernacle before or after every Mass. In addition to Francis of Assisi, Carlo took several of the younger saints as his models, including Bernadette Soubirous, Jacinta and Francisco Marto, and Dominic Savio. At school Carlo tried to comfort friends whose parents were undergoing divorce, as well as stepping in to defend disabled students from bullies. After school hours he volunteered his time with the city’s homeless and destitute. Considered a computer geek by some, Carlo spent four years creating a website dedicated to cataloguing every reported Eucharistic miracle around the world. He also enjoyed films, comics, soccer, and playing popular video games. Diagnosed with leukemia, Carlo offered his sufferings to God for the intentions of the sitting pope—Benedict XVI—and the entire Church. His longtime desire to visit as many sites of Eucharistic miracles as possible was cut short by his illness. Carlo died in 2006 and was beatified in 2020. As he had wished, Carlo was buried in Assisi at St. Mary Major's “Chapel of the Stripping”, where Francis had returned his clothes to his father and began a more radical following of the Gospel. Among the thousands present for Carlo's beatification at Assisi's Basilica of St. Francis were many of his childhood friends. Presiding at the beatification service, Cardinal Agostino Vallini praised Carlo as an example of how young people can use technology to spread the Gospel “to reach as many people as possible and help them know the beauty of friendship with the Lord.” His liturgical feast is celebrated on October 12. Reflection Carlo Acutis did not strive to become famous but rather to cooperate as generously as possible with God's grace. That journey brought him many experiences, but they were all united by a burning desire to serve God and others as generously as possible. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Full Text of ReadingsThursday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 374The Saint of the day is Saint Cyril of AlexandriaSaint Cyril of Alexandria's Story Saints are not born with halos around their heads.

Two weeks ago, the former Republican National Committee boss Ronna McDaniel was hired and then fired as an MSNBC contributor. This came about after pushback from staff, including complaints that she had touted Donald Trump's debunked claims of voting malfeasance in the 2020 election. At the same time, there was backlash from people on the right who chalked up her dismissal as proof of left-wing media bias. Presiding over the chaos was NBCUniversal News chairman Cesar Conde, who has been trying to make the network for all viewpoints. But is that even possible in the Trump era? We talked to Fast Company contributing writer Brian Stelter, who profiled Cesar Conde in our upcoming spring issue. Then we chatted about one of Fast Company's recognition programs, Brands That Matter. This is where Fast Company highlights companies that build a connection with their audiences by being culturally relevant, making an impact, and communicating their mission and values clearly. In today's episode, we tackle the alarming trend of "swatting," not the buzzing flies kind but the incident where a Black judge, Tanya Chutkan, overseeing a Trump case, experienced an attempted swatting attack at her front door. Unraveling this issue sheds light on the seriousness of such pranks. Next, we dive into comedian Jo Koy's hosting of the Golden Globes. Critics are claiming he didn't do well. Drawing on personal experience as an awards show host, Seales shares her insights and advice in the Am I Trippin segment. In the realm of podcasting, we examine rapper Cam'ron's remarks on racial and ethnic identity, particularly identifying as "Black" versus "African American." A call for unity and acknowledgment of our connectedness forms the basis of this insightful conversation. Switching gears, we explore a concerning study indicating that online racism has detrimental effects on Black youth, potentially leading to symptoms related to post-traumatic stress disorder. This leads to a broader discussion about fostering a positive online environment. W touch on Pope Francis's call for a universal ban on surrogate motherhood, Usher's commitment to a sugar and alcohol-free Super Bowl Halftime Show, and Lisa Bonet filing for divorce from Jason Momoa.
