So much to get to and we start with the buzzer beater in College Park. March is less than 48 hours away but with moments like that, it feels like we're already there. A quick run through the weeknight results of note, including more jockeying in the SEC, which Norlander doesn't think is going to get to 13 NCAAT bids because he's a hater. We clear the runway for John Fanta who stops by to discuss - among other things - St John's atop the Big East, why he chose to attend Seton Hall as an undergrad, the biggest pet peeves about college basketball coverage this time of year, his list of legitimate national championship contenders, and who the Browns should take at 2 in the upcoming NFL Draft. A real tour-de-force performance from Fanta, it should be said. Norlander & Hartzell run through the must-see TV games on deck this weekend, which is a solid A- slate according to the fellas. Let's enjoy the games, March is coming!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Boone County's presiding commissioner says Schneider Electric sees the need for the proposed $73-mllion expansion at their facility on Columbia's Route B. Presiding Commissioner Kip Kendrick joined host Fred Parry in-studio for the hour Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle's “CEO Roundtable.” Schneider Electric, which many of our listeners will remember used to be called Square D, is seeking property tax abatement on the expansion. Commissioner Kendrick says Boone County commissioners approved the request for Chapter 100 at Thursday's meeting. It now moves to the performance agreement/contract process. Commissioner Kendrick tells listeners that the proposed $73-million expansion would include $20-million in additional warehouse space. That would be a 58,000 square feet warehouse addition. Kendrick says another $53-million would go toward investing in manufacturing equipment line expansion. Schneider wants to add a significant amount of manufacturing lines. Commissioner Kendrick tells listeners that the proposed expansion is expected to create 241 new jobs which would pay above the Boone County average wage, so the jobs will pay more than $48,000. The city of Columbia has used what's called Chapter 100 to help Kraft Heinz in 2015 and in 2024. They've also used them with Swift Foods in 2021. Commissioner Kendrick notes Square D was one of the first manufacturers on Route B about 50 years ago. Kip Kendrick grew up in northeast Missouri's Monroe City. His father ran the Chevrolet dealership in town. Mr. Kendrick describes his father as his role model, noting he taught him the importance of community service and giving back to the community. Kip Kendrick moved from Monroe City to Columbia to attend Columbia College and to work at Job Point, which describes itself as Missouri's premier employment center and Community Development Corporation. Kip Kendrick helped people find work while at Job Point, including many residents with disabilities. Mr. Kendrick tells host Fred Parry that his position with Job Point helped set him up for where he is today. Mr. Kendrick was elected four times to the Missouri House before being elected Boone County presiding commissioner in 2022. Commissioner Kendrick also briefed listeners Saturday on the new multi-million dollar Boone County Sheriff's regional law enforcement training center being built in Columbia. Groundbreaking took place in April, and construction is progressing. He and Mr. Parry about discussed the issue of housing and the senior real estate tax relief program:

pWotD Episode 2744: Kamala Harris Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 628,816 views on Tuesday, 5 November 2024 our article of the day is Kamala Harris.Kamala Devi Harris (English: , born October 20, 1964) is an American politician and attorney who has been the 49th and current vice president of the United States since 2021, serving under President Joe Biden. Harris is the Democratic presidential nominee in the 2024 United States presidential election. She is the first female vice president of the United States, making her the highest-ranking female official in U. S. history. She is also the first African American and first Asian American vice president. From 2017 to 2021, she represented California in the United States Senate. Before that, she was Attorney General of California from 2011 to 2017.Born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She began her law career in the office of the district attorney of Alameda County. She was recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office and later to the office of the city attorney of San Francisco. She was elected district attorney of San Francisco in 2003 and attorney general of California in 2010, and reelected as attorney general in 2014. As the San Francisco district attorney and the attorney general of California, Harris was the first woman, the first African American, and the first Asian American to hold each office.Harris was the junior U. S. senator from California from 2017 to 2021. She won the 2016 Senate election, becoming the second Black woman and first South Asian American U. S. senator. As a senator, Harris advocated for stricter gun control laws, the DREAM Act, federal legalization of cannabis, and reforms to healthcare and taxation. Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 474The Saint of the day is Saint John Paul IISaint John Paul II's Story “Open wide the doors to Christ,” urged John Paul II during the homily at the Mass where he was installed as pope in 1978. Born in Wadowice, Poland, Karol Jozef Wojtyla had lost his mother, father, and older brother before his 21st birthday. Karol's promising academic career at Krakow's Jagiellonian University was cut short by the outbreak of World War II. While working in a quarry and a chemical factory, he enrolled in an “underground” seminary in Kraków. Ordained in 1946, he was immediately sent to Rome where he earned a doctorate in theology. Back in Poland, a short assignment as assistant pastor in a rural parish preceded his very fruitful chaplaincy for university students. Soon Fr. Wojtyla earned a doctorate in philosophy and began teaching that subject at Poland's University of Lublin. Communist officials allowed Wojtyla to be appointed auxiliary bishop of Kraków in 1958, considering him a relatively harmless intellectual. They could not have been more wrong! Bishop Wojtyla attended all four sessions of Vatican II and contributed especially to its Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World. Appointed as archbishop of Kraków in 1964, he was named a cardinal three years later. Elected pope in October 1978, he took the name of his short-lived, immediate predecessor. Pope John Paul II was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. In time, he made pastoral visits to 124 countries, including several with small Christian populations. John Paul II promoted ecumenical and interfaith initiatives, especially the 1986 Day of Prayer for World Peace in Assisi. He visited Rome's main synagogue and the Western Wall in Jerusalem; he also established diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Israel. He improved Catholic-Muslim relations, and in 2001 visited a mosque in Damascus, Syria. The Great Jubilee of the Year 2000, a key event in John Paul's ministry, was marked by special celebrations in Rome and elsewhere for Catholics and other Christians. Relations with the Orthodox Churches improved considerably during his papacy. “Christ is the center of the universe and of human history” was the opening line of John Paul II's 1979 encyclical, Redeemer of the Human Race. In 1995, he described himself to the United Nations General Assembly as “a witness to hope.” His 1979 visit to Poland encouraged the growth of the Solidarity movement there and the collapse of communism in central and eastern Europe 10 years later. John Paul II began World Youth Day and traveled to several countries for those celebrations. He very much wanted to visit China and the Soviet Union, but the governments in those countries prevented that. One of the most well-remembered photos of John Paul II's pontificate was his one-on-one conversation in 1983, with Mehmet Ali Agca, who had attempted to assassinate him two years earlier. In his 27 years of papal ministry, John Paul II wrote 14 encyclicals and five books, canonized 482 saints and beatified 1,338 people. In the last years of his life, he suffered from Parkinson's disease and was forced to cut back on some of his activities. Pope Benedict XVI beatified John Paul II in 2011, and Pope Francis canonized him in 2014. Reflection Before John Paul II's funeral Mass in St. Peter's Square, hundreds of thousands of people had waited patiently for a brief moment to pray before his body, which lay in state inside St. Peter's for several days. The media coverage of his funeral was unprecedented. Presiding at the funeral Mass, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger—then dean of the College of Cardinals and later Pope Benedict XVI—concluded his homily by saying: “None of us can ever forget how, in that last Easter Sunday of his life, the Holy Father, marked by suffering, came once more to the window of the Apostolic Palace and one last time gave his blessing urbi et orbi (‘to the city and to the world'). “We can be sure that our beloved pope is standing today at the window of the Father's house, that sees us and blesses us. Yes, bless us, Holy Father. We entrust your dear soul to the Mother of God, your Mother, who guided you each day and who will guide you now to the glory of her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.” Learn more about Saint John Paul II! Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
Full Text of ReadingsMonday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 467The Saint of the day is Blessed Carlo AcutisBlessed Carlo Acutis’ Story Born in London and raised in Milan, Carlo's wealthy parents were not particularly religious. Upon receiving his first communion at age seven, Carlo became a frequent communicant, making a point of praying before the tabernacle before or after every Mass. In addition to Francis of Assisi, Carlo took several of the younger saints as his models, including Bernadette Soubirous, Jacinta and Francisco Marto, and Dominic Savio. At school Carlo tried to comfort friends whose parents were undergoing divorce, as well as stepping in to defend disabled students from bullies. After school hours he volunteered his time with the city’s homeless and destitute. Considered a computer geek by some, Carlo spent four years creating a website dedicated to cataloguing every reported Eucharistic miracle around the world. He also enjoyed films, comics, soccer, and playing popular video games. Diagnosed with leukemia, Carlo offered his sufferings to God for the intentions of the sitting pope—Benedict XVI—and the entire Church. His longtime desire to visit as many sites of Eucharistic miracles as possible was cut short by his illness. Carlo died in 2006 and was beatified in 2020. As he had wished, Carlo was buried in Assisi at St. Mary Major's “Chapel of the Stripping”, where Francis had returned his clothes to his father and began a more radical following of the Gospel. Among the thousands present for Carlo's beatification at Assisi's Basilica of St. Francis were many of his childhood friends. Presiding at the beatification service, Cardinal Agostino Vallini praised Carlo as an example of how young people can use technology to spread the Gospel “to reach as many people as possible and help them know the beauty of friendship with the Lord.” His liturgical feast is celebrated on October 12. Reflection Carlo Acutis did not strive to become famous but rather to cooperate as generously as possible with God's grace. That journey brought him many experiences, but they were all united by a burning desire to serve God and others as generously as possible. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Full Text of ReadingsThursday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 374The Saint of the day is Saint Cyril of AlexandriaSaint Cyril of Alexandria's Story Saints are not born with halos around their heads. Cyril, recognized as a great teacher of the Church, began his career as archbishop of Alexandria, Egypt, with impulsive, often violent, actions. He pillaged and closed the churches of the Novatian heretics—who required those who denied the faith to be re-baptized—participated in the deposing of Saint John Chrysostom, and confiscated Jewish property, expelling the Jews from Alexandria in retaliation for their attacks on Christians. Cyril's importance for theology and Church history lies in his championing the cause of orthodoxy against the heresy of Nestorius, who taught that in Christ there were two persons, one human and one divine. The controversy centered around the two natures in Christ. Nestorius would not agree to the title “God-bearer” for Mary. He preferred “Christ-bearer,” saying there are two distinct persons in Christ—divine and human—joined only by a moral union. He said Mary was not the mother of God but only of the man Christ, whose humanity was only a temple of God. Nestorianism implied that the humanity of Christ was a mere disguise. Presiding as the pope's representative at the Council of Ephesus in 431, Cyril condemned Nestorianism and proclaimed Mary truly the “God-bearer”—the mother of the one Person who is truly God and truly human. In the confusion that followed, Cyril was deposed and imprisoned for three months, after which he was welcomed back to Alexandria. Besides needing to soften some of his opposition to those who had sided with Nestorius, Cyril had difficulties with some of his own allies, who thought he had gone too far, sacrificing not only language but orthodoxy. Until his death, his policy of moderation kept his extreme partisans under control. On his deathbed, despite pressure, he refused to condemn the teacher of Nestorius. Reflection Lives of the saints are valuable not only for the virtue they reveal but also for the less admirable qualities that also appear. Holiness is a gift of God to us as human beings. Life is a process. We respond to God's gift, but sometimes with a lot of zigzagging. If Cyril had been more patient and diplomatic, the Nestorian church might not have risen and maintained power so long. But even saints must grow out of immaturity, narrowness, and selfishness. It is because they—and we—do grow, that we are truly saints, persons who live the life of God. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Boone County commissioners voted Thursday afternoon to approve a senior real estate tax relief program. The relief is for Boone County residents who own their homes and are at least 62 years old. 939 the Eagle's Mike Murphy covered Thursday's Boone County Commission meeting, where commissioners voted to implement a program that would allow for a freeze on any annual increases. Commissioners excluded from the senior real estate tax relief program increases that would result from new voter-approved bond issues. State Rep. Cheri Toalson Reisch (R-Hallsville) attended the commission meeting and criticized that exemption, saying that was not the intention of Missouri lawmakers. She also spoke on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri" on Thursday, saying commissioners were being deceptive. Boone County Presiding Commissioner Kip Kendrick joined us live on "Wake Up Mid-Missouri" this morning to respond, saying it's easy to make accusations but it's hard to implement a complex system. Commissioner Kendrick tells listeners that Boone County is following the law and that Representative Toalson Reisch is making baseless accusations. He says he worries her accusations will scare seniors and prevent them from seeking tax relief. Commissioner Kendrick praises the bill sponsor in Jefferson City, State Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer (R-Parkville), who represents Platte County. Commissioner Kendrick says he's found at least seven other counties, including Platte, that have made the exemption. Commissioner Kendrick emphasizes that Boone County is not alone in creating the exemption:

AP correspondent Norman Hall reports on the re-election of the Georgia prosecutor in the Georgia Trump election case.
Mayor Eric Adams of New York City exhibited a stern response towards anti-Israel demonstrators at the prestigious Columbia University during his recent address. He expressed his ire towards the ongoing displays of antisemitism around the campus and highlighted that they could be heading towards a scenario of swift, forced removal and possible arrests if such actions persisted. The demonstrators have established what is being referred to as the 'Gaza Solidarity Encampment'. Their protest geared towards an end to the conflict in Gaza have seen them leading pro-Hamas chants. They are also reported to have celebrated the demise of Israeli soldiers, gone as far as burning flags, and engaged in a range of other activities widely condemned by not just Columbia University, but also city administration, most notably by Mayor Adams himself. Media reports have detailed these actions as an alarming surge in anti-Semitic sentiments stemming from support for the conflict-ridden Gaza region. The protests are noted for chants favoring the terrorist group Hamas, as well as reprehensible calls to destroy Tel Aviv, Israel's buzzing metropolis. In the face of these disturbing acts, voices from across the aisles in Congress, both Democrats and Republicans alike, have labelled these demonstrations as blatantly anti-Semitic, unearthing uncomfortable truths about public sentiment and its dramatic shifts. Mayor Adams fired back against these efforts on a popular media platform, stating, 'We are a city of laws and order, not a breeding ground for chaos and division. Systemically orchestrated unrest, seeking to leverage the deep-seated issues currently plaguing the Middle East, will not gain ground here.' He dismissed the dangerously increasing support for a terrorist organization that targets Jews, calling it horrifying and absolutely reprehensible. In voicing his stern opposition, he reiterated a message of zero tolerance towards hate in the city. He further gave emphasis towards a pending investigation by the NYPD into these violations. Adams firmly asserts, 'We will not shy away from taking appropriate legal action against those who choose to cross legal boundaries. Those breaking the law will face the consequences of their actions.' He does, however, note with considerable emphasis the boundaries posed by the nature of Columbia University. Columbia University's status as a private institution on private property, Adams notes, poses a unique challenge for law enforcement. The NYPD lacks authority to intervene directly on campus unless explicitly invited by senior university administrators. He thus urged the university's higher administration to enhance their ongoing dialogue with the NYPD to ensure the safety of everyone within the campus environs. The Mayor also drew attention to the NYPD's heightened presence surrounding the university, strategically positioned for the protection of students and New Yorkers on public streets. Such officers stand ready to respond at a moment's notice if called upon by the university officials, as was the case this past Thursday. Commenting on the wider Middle East situation, Adams acknowledged the strong emotions it has evoked, 'The conflict has left many of us in deep pain and anger. All New Yorkers are entitled to express their sorrow, but to transition that into harassment, threats or physical harm towards those they are at odds with, simply has no place here.' He maintained that while public expression of sorrow is certainly a valid and protected sentiment, it must not serve as a pretext for causing harm or inciting fear among others. The collective sorrow of New York should not jeopardize the safety and peace of its citizens. Presiding over the city with the largest Jewish community worldwide outside Israel, Adams recognized the distress these protests have inflicted on Jews both locally and globally. 'As we commence Passover tomorrow evening, the anguish caused by these protests to Jews everywhere is certainly not lost on me.' His remarks went beyond simple acknowledgement; they empathized with the suffering of a key community in his constituency. While paying heed to the pain experienced by the Jewish community, Mayor Adams also did not dismiss the profound sadness of those demonstrating in response to the loss of innocent lives in Gaza. Their outcry, borne from the same spirit of empathy, was noted even as he reiterated the need for peaceful expression. Turning his attention to the escalating violence in the Middle East, Adams detailed the recent attack by Hamas fighters on Israeli territory that began on October 7. The onslaught resulted in more than 1,300 fatalities, a host of hostages including Americans, making a severe dent in the region's already fragile stability. In response to this onslaught, Israel declared war on the militant group and launched a retaliatory campaign in Gaza. The continuing struggle and loss of life on both sides complicate the path to peaceful relations in this troubled region. In closing, Adams underscored the complexity and deeply personal nature of the conflict in the Middle East and how it resonates in diverse ways among his constituents. However, he firmly reminded all that demonstrating empathy and pursuing justice need not translate into inciting unrest and disharmony in New York City. Two weeks ago, the former Republican National Committee boss Ronna McDaniel was hired and then fired as an MSNBC contributor. This came about after pushback from staff, including complaints that she had touted Donald Trump's debunked claims of voting malfeasance in the 2020 election. At the same time, there was backlash from people on the right who chalked up her dismissal as proof of left-wing media bias. Presiding over the chaos was NBCUniversal News chairman Cesar Conde, who has been trying to make the network for all viewpoints. But is that even possible in the Trump era? We talked to Fast Company contributing writer Brian Stelter, who profiled Cesar Conde in our upcoming spring issue. Then we chatted about one of Fast Company's recognition programs, Brands That Matter. This is where Fast Company highlights companies that build a connection with their audiences by being culturally relevant, making an impact, and communicating their mission and values clearly. Our advertising and brand correspondent, Jeff Beer, joined us to share his favorite brands at the moment. Kristen Wiig's reprisal of the Target lady, SunChips jumping on the eclipse phenomenon, and . . . Dramamine producing a short documentary about barf bags.

In an unforeseen turn of events, Judge Scott McAfee handed down a decisive ruling in the disqualification proceedings aimed at Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis last Friday. Presiding over a case that hit close to home, McAfee, who once endorsed Willis during her campaigning period and was a colleague in her office, stipulated that either special prosecutor Nathan Wade should be discharged from the case or Willis and her squadron should recuse themselves. Jonathan Turley, an authority in legal jurisprudence, scrutinized and censured the judgment, labeling it as 'ill-conceived' and insinuating that the ruling enabled Willis to evade accountability. Unraveling his discontent, Turley pointed out 'The outcome sidestepped an imminent debacle, yet couldn't deter the potential inquiries that are imminent. It's equivalent to apprehending one individual from a bank safe, leaving the other behind.' Turley then argued that the perceived issue leading to Judge McAfee's decision to disqualify Wade was intrinsically linked to his relationship with Willis. Their testimonies were synchronised, symbolising the two facets of the situation; surprisingly, only Wade was recused. This outcome has triggered doubts, raising the question - why was Willis spared the same fate? The court ruling, according to Turley, gives an impression of a lopsided approach towards justice. The conspicuous absence of punitive measures for Willis gives this saga an incomplete ending, fueling the view that 'the court callously disregarded the injured.'See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In a shocking revelation, Oklahoma's Lincoln County District Judge Traci Soderstrom is under intense scrutiny after allegedly sending over 500 text messages filled with mockery and bias during a pivotal murder trial she presided over in June. According to a petition filed on Tuesday, these controversial texts were exchanged with a bailiff, in which Judge Soderstrom openly mocked trial participants, including attorneys, jurors, and witnesses. The exchanges displayed a palpable bias against state prosecutors while showing a clear inclination toward the defendant. She was also cited complimenting the defense attorney on numerous occasions. The allegations came to light following a thorough investigation into Judge Soderstrom's phone usage by the Council on Judicial Complaints. While Soderstrom's attorney has yet to provide a comment to major news outlets, including CNN, the details within the petition raise significant concerns about the impartiality of the judicial process in this particular trial. Presiding over a first-degree murder trial, Soderstrom saw the defendant being pronounced guilty of a lesser charge - second-degree manslaughter. The verdict led to a sentence of four years, equivalent to the time the defendant already served, ensuring no further jail time. Conversely, a co-defendant in the case, charged with enabling child abuse, received a harsher 25-year prison sentence after accepting a plea deal. Several texts have been highlighted to emphasize the alleged misconduct. In one exchange, Soderstrom remarked about the district attorney "sweating through his coat." In another text, she oddly inquired about the prosecutor's hand size, questioning, "Why does he have baby hands? … They are so weird looking," as noted by Chief Justice M. John Kane IV. Her apparent admiration for the defense attorney also shone through in her messages. "She's awesome," she texted the bailiff during one of the defense attorney's addresses to the jury, even considering aloud (or rather, in text) whether she could clap for her. Among the myriad of messages, other comments ranged from calling a police officer "pretty" to declaring a video as "boring" and even speculating on a juror's possible wig. One particularly alarming message hinted at her preconceived notions about the trial's outcome. She stated there would be "no way they get guilty on murder" because of a perceived lack of DNA evidence. Following the trial's conclusion, the district attorney's office was alerted by a sheriff's deputy about Soderstrom's continuous phone usage. The evidence was irrefutable: a 51-minute video clip from a courtroom camera showcased her extensive phone engagement. The Council on Judicial Complaints, after an in-person hearing with Judge Soderstrom, deemed her texts as severe breaches of the code of judicial conduct. When confronted about her phone usage during the trial, Soderstrom merely remarked that she was "texting about things that were – probably could have waited," brushing off the gravity of her actions by saying, "(I)t was like, 'Oh, that's funny. Move on.'" It wasn't just these text messages that have put her in hot water. The petition also highlighted several other instances of Soderstrom's inappropriate behavior both inside the courtroom and on her social media platforms. One notable instance was during her hearing where she reportedly used profanities three times within the initial six minutes of her testimony. The case against Judge Traci Soderstrom is now slated for January 3, 2024. She had assumed her role on the bench in the 23rd Judicial District of Oklahoma just earlier this year, in January 2023. With the integrity of the justice system hanging in the balance, the forthcoming trial will be closely watched by legal experts and the public alike. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
