Dennis is joined via Zoom by TCM host Dave Karger to discuss his new book, 50 Oscar Nights: Iconic Stars and Filmmakers On Their Career Defining Wins, which features delicious new interviews with icons like Nicole Kidman, Jane Fonda, Martin Scorsese and Mel Brooks as well as lesser-known winners like Precious screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher, documentarian Jessica Yu and sound mixer Kevin O'Connell who was nominated 20 times before finally taking home the gold for Heartbreak Ridge. Dave talks about how some winners revealed to him that they were going through tough times in their personal lives on the same night they were achieving Oscar glory as well as how the win impacted their career. Dave also talks about some of the more dishy stories in the book; like how Joan Crawford tried to horn in on Rita Moreno's Oscar glory, how Marlee Matlin was in Betty Ford for rehab when she got nominated and how John Travolta's "Adela Nazeem" gaffe cause one nominee to hit the flask. Other topics include: how awesome it was to write for Entertainment Weekly in the 1990s, the interview subject that intimidated him, how he made the transition from print journalist to TV host, how being a nice guy has served him well in Hollywood and why he's totally in awe of actors. Dave also plays a lightning round of movie-related questions from the Observation Dec, which produces musings about Porky's, Sixteen Candles, Singing in the Rain and Broadcast News.

The Top 100 Project

Gabourey Sidibe's debut and Mo'Nique's outstanding performance (which won her a gold naked guy) are easily the highlights of the character study that is the subject of the Next 170 Project. Neither of those actresses has been cast much since (we discuss some of the reasons why), but they’ll be hard-pressed to ever surpass what they did here anyway. Lee Daniels’ 2nd film is certainly his best work behind the bullhorn and Geoffrey Fletcher took home an Oscar for his rock-solid script. They can all thank thenovelPushbySapphire, although neither of the 2 Oscar-winners actually mentioned Sapphire during their speeches. Huh. Anyway, this movie isn’t easy to watch, but there’s some really meaningful stuff going on as we get a rare glimpse into the rough lives of poor, black women. Sparkplug Coffee is a fine answer to the question of what goes well with pigs feet ‘n’ fried chicken. The Sparkers continue to offer a 20% discount if you are willing to type in “top100project” as your promo code at check-out. For The Record: Oprah's 4 impediments to making it in show biz are that she was black, overweight, poor and a woman. Also, there were 10 Best Picture nominees in 2009 (the 1st year they expanded it from the previously standard 5). We mentioned 5 of the noms, but also there was Up, The Blind Side, District 9, A Serious Man and An Education. http://www.thegrio.com/2009/11/personal-ties-bind-makers-to-movie-precious.php The film "Precious" stars newcomer Gabourey Sidebe, who plays an illiterate teenage girl from Harlem, New York, whose story of repeated sexual abuse at the hands of her father and mother will send viewers on an emotional journey. Based on the novel "Push," the story is one that captured readers and the film's creators more than a decade ago. "Both Lee and I read the book," executive producer Lisa Cortes told TheGrio. "We weren't making films at that time, but both of us loved it and talked about it incessantly." Cortes and director Lee Daniels convinced "Push" author Sapphire that only they could tell this story of abuse, survival and hope. "I'm still pinching myself when I think of the places around the world where this film has been received so warmly," Cortes said. "Sapphire was comfortable with Lee," screenplay writer Geoffrey Fletcher said. "Once he gained her trust and confidence, then it was off to the races." Precious' story comes alive with an all-star cast, including Lenny Kravitz and Paula Patton. They are stars that shine because of their ability to lose themselves in dark, disturbing roles. Grammy award-winning artist Mariah Carey is Precious' social worker. "With Mariah," Fletcher said. "I really think that when you see this performance here, I think it's a clear window into the reason why she has the following she does. It is her humanity that we see here. She's very sensitive, very alert and very humble." Most frightening is Mo'nique, as the mother. "What's surprising about Mo'nique in 'Precious,' is that you don't see Mo'nique," Cortes said. "You don't for a moment see 'The Parkers.' You don't see the comedian that we know and love. You see Mary, a woman who is as much a victim as she is a perpetrator." Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry partnered to executive produce the film with hopes of giving this tale the Hollywood success story it deserves. Recounting his own history of abuse, Perry said 'Precious' is a story that needs to be heard. "I realized how close the story was to my childhood and I had to get involved," executive producer Tyler Perry said. "Monique's character was my father. And I wanted people to understand, see and know that this is a movie that will change lives." "So for every voiceless person that we all do not recognize, this film gives them a voice," Cortes said. "It sheds light on their humanity and it sheds light on the tremendous possibility that the precious boys and girls have."
