Send us a textIt's Episode 101 and while we're gearing up to charge full speed ahead, we're going to take a quick look back at the halcyon days of the fall/winter of 2024 when two earth-shattering comic book movie bombs were unleashed on the cinema going public. We're talking Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie a Deux starring Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beets and Brendan Gleeson up against JC Chandor's – who are we kidding? Marvel/Sony's Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor Johnson, Russell Crow, Ariana Debose, Fred Hechinger and Alessandro Nivola. I have assembled my team of elite assassins to pick off and pore over these two fearsome digital age fails, starting with my kid sis and charter member of the Sinatra/Silva Karate dojo Roseanne Caputi, Joe Field hypnotist, psychologist author and quite the crooner, as well as the larger than life, accept-no-substitutes, KING of the real estate drone photography jungle, Gordon Alex Robertson. Before we commence wrestle with those CGI bears and saucy tripper chicks, the synopses. Joker: Folie á DeuxIn this follow up to the inexplicable 2019 mega-hit, The Joker, Arthur Fleck, barely subsists at Arkham State Hospital as he awaits trial for the five, technically six murders he committed in the last film. However, he soon gets his zip back when he is allowed to attend a prison music therapy class and is introduced to fellow inmate Harley “Lee” Quinzel. Together, they share a passionate love affair fueled by music, mayhem and delusions of grandeur.Kraven the HunterAfter being mauled to the point of death by a lion, Sergei Kravinoff, son of notorious Trophy hunter and drug kingpin Nicolai Kravinoff, gains enhanced jungle animal abilities and becomes Kraven The Hunter, a sort of bad guy who fights for the little guy against drug dealers. On his quest to prove himself as the ultimate predator, he confronts his father and half-brother Demetri aka the shapeshifting Chameleon while also teaming up with Calypso, a voodoo potion wielding lawyer. Also, he goes up against The Rhino. So how BAD can they BE?Find out!Watch the podcast on Youtube:https://youtu.be/jRItWg1TTWg
Sony's 6th film in their cinematic universe was directed by JC Chandor and stars Aaron Taylor Johnson, Russell Crowe, Ariana DeBose, Alessandro Nivola & Fred Hechinger. In this film, after an encounter with a lion leaves a young teenager with super human abilities, he leaves his father and half brother behind to live on his own. 15 years later and now a man, Kraven spends his life catching criminals in Russia & Europe but then the past returns for him in the form of a mysterious organization that could use a man with his abilities. This movie had been tossed around during the pandemic in hopes for the character to join the MCU. However, the script went through several writers and rewrites and eventually became part of Sony's spinoff cinematic universe. The film's initial 2023 release date was pushed back due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA Strike. In December 2024 after the film bombed at the box office, Sony announced that this would be the final film in this cinematic universe.

It took some time for writer/director J C Chandor to break into the movie business. When he did, it was with the mini-budget Margin Call, a film that would snag him an Oscar nomination. Since then, he's brought to the screen All Is Lost, A Most Violent Year, Triple Frontier and now Kraven The Hunter, arguably his highest profile feature to date. In this special episode, he talks through his new film, and a whole lot more... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Follow along with the gang as they root for and hat on Our Man, played by the incomparable Robert Redford, while he tries to survive after his small boat hits open ocean debris and starts to sink. Back with a slightly wonky show order the boys use the recent headlines as an excuse to dive into JC Chandor's 2011 debut Margin Call. We also fondly recall NBC's The Slap, lament Kevin Spacey's insane heel turn, along with the nosedive that became Chandor's career. All that plus a fight over whether or not Frances Ha sucks that gets so intense, the show nearly ends for good. But we will be back Easter weekend with Mel Gibson's ode to ass kickings: The Passion of the Christ from 2004.
“People wanna live like this in their cars and big fuckin' houses they can't even pay for, then you're necessary. The only reason that they all get to continue living like kings is cause we got our fingers on the scales in their favor. I take my hand off and then the whole world gets really fuckin' fair really fuckin' quickly and nobody actually wants that. They say they do but they don't. They want what we have to give them but they also wanna, you know, play innocent and pretend they have no idea where it came from. Well, thats more hypocrisy than I'm willing to swallow, so fuck em. Fuck normal people”If you're into hearing amazingly written (and spoken) dialog including some of the above monologue, then have we got a movie for you! It's 2011's factually accurate, thinly disguised housing/financial crisis drama, Margin call.
Why have I watched this movie 20 times? On the face of it, JC Chandor's ensemble drama, about an after-hours fiasco at a Wall Street firm, starring a starry ensemble including Zachary Quinto, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Stanley Tucci and Demi Moore, sounds like it should be dry and frankly, boring. It is anything but. The quality of the writing, the quality of the character work, the performances, the narrative structure, and the themes of the film, all come together to make something super-entertaining and a movie I revisit every few years. And like other All-Star episodes of this show, I discover new things about the movie as I get older and continue watching it. What movies are your Watch This Tonight All-Stars? Let me know.

The guys lean into the rule of threes with this week's films. Triple Frontier, the first collaboration between director J.C. Chandor (All Is Lost), screenwriter Mark Boal (Zero Dark Thirty), and Netflix. Is this film's story of U.S. Army veterans turned heist thieves in South America successful? Wade and Kevin then take a look at the new film from Iranian master Jafar Panahi, 3 Faces. Panahi's penchant for metafictional gamesmanship is well established; how does his latest fit into that phase of his career?

After a nearly five-year hiatus from writing and directing films, J.C. Chandor re-emerges with Triple Frontier (for Netflix), in which five ex-military special ops soldiers reunite in order to stage a heist of a murderous major South American drug lord. Oscar Isaac is the de facto leader of the quintet, playing Santiago, who decides to "get the band back together" for one last mission for reconnaissance for the government to take down the elusive drug lord he's spent years trying to take down, Lorea, but changes the mission once he discovers that they could do the bust themselves, take out the human vermin the world is better off without, and score the millions of dollars in cash within his jungle-hidden, well-guarded mansion. Each of the men find that their service for the country hasn't exactly resulted in the country taking care of them financially, so they figure they should get what's fair for their years of sacrifice, making it worth their salt to commit to. Ben Affleck, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund and Pedro Pascal co-star in this action/adventure/thriller.
5 mercenaries plan to rob a narco boss in the Amazon jungle and things don't go as planned... Cass was FEELIN this movie! The newest Netflix Original stars Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund and Pedro Pascal. We loved the cast, liked the story, and overall recommend the flick. The film was directed by JC Chandor who brought us A Most Violent Year and All is Lost, both of which are AWESOME. The action was definitely a highlight and had great sense of realism. Unlike Clouseau, Sam proves himself to the epitome of competence by doing not one, not two but two reviews. Firstly of Paul Thomas Anderson's stoner noir Inherent Vice, and secondly of J C Chandor's mob drama A Most Violent Year. Meanwhile Danny, much like the character of Clouseau's girlfriend Nicole Durant-Clouseau, iconically brought to life by Emily Mortimer, supports him at every turn. He also checks out Alex Garland’s debut sci-fi film Ex Machina. "Are robots human?" the film asks. “Obviously not." he replies. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
On this episode I am joined by the host of Cinematic for the People, Ben Zuk, as we take a gamble on Adam McKay in THE BIG SHORT which inspires us to do some cinematic number crunching by revisiting the documentary STARTUP.COM and JC Chandor’s MARGIN CALL. But before that we see if this latest Michael Lewis adaptation crashes on the silver screen.
On the latest episode of the Talkhouse Film podcast, Academy Award nominee J.C. Chandor, the director of Margin Call and All is Lost, is in conversation with Borderline Films' Josh Mond, a producer turned writer-director whose debut feature, James White, is out now. The two friends discuss Mond's personal and professional path to this semi-autobiographical film inspired by his own experiences with his late mother as she battled cancer, while their chat also touches on: Mond's aborted first feature, a sex comedy that was to star Jonah Hill; which of his collaborators had a full beard at 13; and how The Jinx, Andrew Jarecki's sensational doc miniseries about Robert Durst, threw a wrench into James White's editing process.
