Sumit Sharma and Chris Mitchell from Breaking Atoms podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Sumit's choice American Gangster. American Gangster (2007) is biographical crime thriller based on Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas. Directed by Ridley Scott and screenplay by Steven Zaillian based on the The Return of Superfly by Mark Jacobson. It's stacked cast features Denzel Washington as Frank Lucas, Russell Crowe as Richie Roberts, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Huey Lucas, Josh Brolin as Detective Trupo, RZA as Moses Jones, Cuba Gooding Jr. as Nicky Barnes, Armand Assante as Dominic Cattano, Idris Elba as Tango and Common as Turner Lucas. In 1960s Harlem Frank Lucas is Bumpy Johnson's right-hand man. When Bumpy dies of a heart attack Frank sees an opportunity to innovate in the drug trade by buying directly from the source in Vietnam and thus cutting out the middle man. Not only that, he trademarks his superior heroin as ‘Blue Magic' and its affordability eliminates the competition. All is going well for Frank until he comes under scrutiny from aspiring lawyer and honest detective Richie Roberts. American Gangster is solid crime drama with a standout performance from Denzel Washington. Like with many Hollywood adaptations what is true and what is there for dramatic effect is unclear but it does make a compelling story of a true life figure. Recommendability scores for American Gangster were high, with a runtime of nearly three hours repeat viewing scores were lower to give an overall rating of 3.88. "His stories were good because he imagined them intensely, so intensely that he came to believe them." So wrote Patricia Highsmith in her seminal literary thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley in 1955. You might also characterise the work of our guest today, the talented Mr. Steven Zaillian, this way. The worlds and characters of his films and TV shows are imagined in such rich detail and complexity that you can absolutely imagine him believing them to be real as he crafts them on the page. In fact, that level of detail and depth has been his calling card for over thirty decades in Hollywood now. From 1990's Awakenings and 1993's Schindler's List, which won Steven an Oscar, all the way to films like Gangs of New York, American Gangster, Moneyball, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Irishman, there's a thrillingly convincing quality about whatever story he's telling – oftentimes, his characters are people you can imagine pulling up a barstool next to you and telling you a tale you'll never forget. This month, he's up for an Emmy for his work with Ripley – a Netflix adaptation of Highsmith's novel, that Steven acted as showrunner for, writing and directing every episode. The series is a hypnotising ten hours in the company of a conman, Tom Ripley, who's hired by a wealthy businessman to convince his son to return home from a life of leisure abroad on the Italian coast. But the more Tom – played here by Andrew Scott – ensconces himself in the lives of Dickie Greenleaf, played by Johnny Flynn, and Dakota Fanning as his partner, Marge Sherwood, the more his lies and his lust for what Dickie has mutates into something murderous. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, Steven tells us about the relevance of fraudster stories in a time of Trump and other public deceivers. We get into the writing tricks and tips that make you root for the morally thorny characters he often writes. And the rationale behind every change from both the novel and the Matt Damon-starring 1999 adaptation of Ripley is uncovered too, as we delve into the slightly different ending to this version of the tale and the meaning of Italian artist Caravaggio's presence throughout this story.  Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Just a few of the A-List directors and producers he has worked with are: Tony Scott, Ridley Scott, Michael Mann, Martin Scorsese, Zack Snyder, Tom Cruise, Michael Bay, Bradley Cooper, Steven Zaillian, Spike Jonze, Gore Verbinski, Tim Burton, Matt Reeves, JJ Abrams, George Clooney, Tony Gilroy, and Judd Apatow. So what does it take to be a top colorist in Hollywood, working for some of the biggest personalities in the business?“Well, it's not just the director, it's a lot of people now… So it's a team sport. Everybody plays a part in it. And it's why it's so enjoyable for me. You have to involve a lot of people, but in general, the director, let's say that's the main person. You have to have a good relationship with that person and you have to be able to interpret what they're saying and get that onto the screen. And to do it quite quickly too, because it's a lot of effort and work and money that goes into these projects. And some people talk in technical terms. And some people, like a Michael Mann for instance, talk through emotions. Like, ‘Hey, [the character is] very this [way] in the scene. And he's feeling this. And this is what's going to happen. And this is what just happened. And therefore this is what I want.' And I'm sort of interpreting that, in a color way, and [I'll] put it on the screen and he'll be like, ‘great, that's it!' Or, ‘no, that's not what I meant. It should be this.'”—Stefan Sonnenfeld, Senior Colorist, Founder and CEO, Company 3Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. Prime Video. Three Pines. Movistar.

I denne uge anmelder Betacritic følgende: Netflix-serien 'Ripley' baseret på Patricia Highsmith's berømte roman ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley'. Data is going to help you up your marketing game. We're showing you how.Right off the bat, “data analysis” probably doesn't stir the soul. But it's how you tune into your target audience so you can tailor your campaigns to them. Your messages will be more relevant, you'll boost engagement, and not only convert leads but create lasting customer relationships. In other words, it's by leveraging data that you graduate from bush league to pro. And what better way to show the benefits of leveraging data than talking about how sabermetrics shaped the world of baseball. So In this episode, we're talking about the Academy Award-winning movie, Moneyball, with the help of special guest, Founder & CMO of Entry Point 1, Tim Hillison. Together, we chat about tuning into your marketing data, doing market research to understand your ICP, and tying statistics to human stories. So batter up for this episode of Remarkable.About our guest, Tim HillisonTim Hillison is the Founder & CMO of Entry Point 1, a growth advisory consultancy for B2B SaaS & Technology startups and scaleups.  He has 25 years of global marketing experience, has led marketing three times on two continents, and has worked for some of the world's most recognized brands, including Visa, Microsoft, and PayPal. Tim's expertise spans Fortune 500 enterprises and fast-moving venture-funded technology startups from series A - E. About Entry Point 1Entry Point 1 connects marketing strategy to business outcomes across the customer journey. Helping it's customers build launch, and run efficient marketing programs that transform their organizations and financial results.  About MoneyballMoneyball is based on a true story about the general manager of the Oakland Athletics trying to assemble a competitive baseball team on a tight budget. This comes after the A's loss to the Yankees the previous year, in 2001, and as they're losing their star players. So the GM, Billy Beane, teams up with player analyst and Yale economics grad, Peter Brand, and together they use sabermetrics to evaluate and sign undervalued players.Sabermetrics are statistics of in-game activity, including batting, pitching and fielding. The term comes from the acronym SABR, for the Society for American Baseball Research. It's a way to look objectively at player performance. In other words, Peter Brand says it's a way to “find value in players that nobody else can see. People are overlooked for a variety of biased reasons and perceived flaws. Age, appearance, and personality.”So the movie is about challenging a traditional value system, where big city teams that have money can afford better players whereas small market teams have to be more strategic about who they sign. The movie came out in 2011 and is based on a book by author Michael Lewis called Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game. It stars Brad Pitt as Billy Beane and Jonah Hill as Peter Brand. It was directed by Bennett Miller and the screenplay is by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin. It was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Moneyball:Tune into your marketing data. It will tell you objectively what strategies are most effective. Use that information to dial in your content. You'll uncover new and overlooked ways of marketing that you wouldn't have used otherwise. Ian says that It's like in Moneyball, when “Billy Bean realizes that you can get a player who can't run, can't catch and can't steal bases; They can only hit home runs, but that's super valuable. And while everyone else sees them as a bad player, you see them as a gem. So what are your marketing versions of that? Is it a channel? Is it a budget item? Is it a way to create something that is consistent and repeatable that won't be perfect, but it will be consistent?”Do market research to understand your ICP. That is, your Ideal Customer Profile. This is how you know your product is meeting an actual need, not a perceived one. Tim says, “You have to do market research for this, to understand where your customers are and where to meet them and what different channels work better for those companies. If you don't spend the time aligning your revenue team to understand that at the beginning, and you just rush right into the tactics, that's where you miss the mark.”  Tie statistics to human stories. Along with the stats you use to prove value to your audience, tell customer success stories. Because it's those human stories that will seal the deal with your audience. Ian says, “Stats are pretty boring, but stats give you a story that is extremely compelling in which there are human beings at the end of the statistic.” It's another way to humanize your brand, by sharing stories instead of just numbers.Quotes*”[The A's] lose like 14 games before winning 20 games in a row, which beats the record. This is what B2B marketing is about because there are lead and lag times in marketing. Marketing is not something where you do it and instantly it happens. ” - Tim Hillison*”In your marketing, you need to find those customer stories where it went above and beyond, where they tell their family and friends about it, where it changed someone's career.” - Ian Faison*”People buy from others like them. And also we know that B2B buyers are not passive. They're out there scouring the internet to research your brand before sales even calls you. And so those that are authentic and have a strategy, meaning that they're talking with a consistent brand voice using the same story and relevant messaging, and they understand their ICP's frustrations and pain points, that is where you build future relationships.” - Tim Hillison*”Helping people get to the next level. That's what they want. How is your software or how is your product going to help people achieve their goals? It's that level of authenticity people want to help them get there.” - Tim Hillison*”Sometimes you try something new and it doesn't work out at first. Then you have to tweak it before it starts getting better and better and better, and then you're on a roll as a team. That energy is electric, and all it does is bring you together as a team. It's an amazing wave of emotion that's created in the film, too.”Time Stamps[0:55] Meet Tim Hillison, Founder & CMO of Entry Point 1[2:01] Why are we talking about Moneyball?[3:26] What does Tim's work at Entry Point 1 entail?[3:48] What is Moneyball about?[11:39] What makes Moneyball remarkable?[17:53] What marketing lessons can we take from Moneyball?[42:43] What's Tim's content strategy?[46:58] How does Tim prove the ROI of content?[49:22] What are some of Tim's favorite pieces of content or campaigns?[51:16] What advice would Tim give to marketers today?LinksWatch MoneyballConnect with Tim on LinkedInLearn more about Entry Point 1About Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. This week we are experiencing some technical difficulties because Apple absolutely wrecked my audio set-up with an unnecessary OS update that doesn't seem to have made anything better. That's beside the point, but I did want to apologize off the hop. Anyway. The Hunt For The American James Bond continues both in our hearts and on the show, as we dip our toes into the chilly waters of Lake Jack Ryan one last time with 1994's Clear and Present Danger, directed once again by Phillip Noyce, based on the book by Tom Clancy, and starring Harrison Ford, Willem Dafoe, Joaquim de Almeida, Henry Czerny, Harris Yulin, Donald Moffat, Miguel Sandoval, Benjamin Bratt, Anne Archer, Thora Birch and James Earl Jones. Patriot Games set the bar pretty low, and this movie comfortably clears it. But it doesn't hit the heights of Hunt For Red October either, leaving us with a somewhat satisfying if not overly long political thriller about drug cartels and American intelligence. There's room to have fun there if you're willing to acknowledge how skeezy the CIA actually is, but perhaps we weren't there yet in '94. Other works discussed in this episode include Poor Things, The Holdovers, Edge of Tomorrow, Top Gun: Maverick, The Flash, and 24. Plus, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One gets renamed for streaming. This is the third ADHD-DVD film with a Steven Zaillian writing credit. The previous were Mission: Impossible and Gangs of New York. If you'd like to watch the film along with us, good luck! It is not available for streaming in Canada, but is rentable on YouTube. We'll be back next week to wrap up the month with a third consecutive Phillip Noyce movie, the admittedly very goofy Val Kilmer vehile The Saint (1997) that is also sadly not available for streaming in Canada. We'll be joined by gifted improviser (and J Mo's childhood friend) Mica Prazak to discuss whether it deserves to be added to the canon, or loaded into a cannon. Until then, see you at the movies!!

It's Die Hard in the war on drugs! For this very special episode, Phil and Liam are joined by a VERY special guest: actor, writer, director, comic book author, renaissance man and podcasting superstar PAUL SCHEER! That's right, the effervescent host of top film podcasts Unspooled and How Do This Get Made? chartered a helicopter and flew in to join Phil and Liam for an intensive analysis of this mid--90s classic! The film's complex plot is thus: after a close friend is murdered by international drug traffickers, the vengeful US President (Donald Moffet) tacitly instructs his National Security team to launch a series of secret military strikes against the parties deemed responsible. Soon the new CIA deputy director Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) discovers himself to be an unwitting pawn in a covert, illegal war between American paramilitary forces and the Colombian drug cartels. As the carnage escalates, Ryan must find a way to quell the bloodshed and expose the corruption at the heart of his own government.  CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER is the third entry in the Jack Ryan film franchise that started with THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. That particular movie was of course directed by DIE HARD helmer John McTiernan, meaning that there is plenty of ‘DIE HARD DNA' in the mix here…but does this motion picture also share some key similarities with Christopher Nolan's OPPENHEIMER? The guys assess its influences and its legacy, while also wrestling with another burning question: is this the ultimate ‘Dad movie'? Paul talks passionately about his deep and long-standing connection with DIE HARD and his youthful love for all things Bruce Willis, and the guys go deep on the film's eclectic creative contributors, that includes personalities such as Tom Clancy, Harrison Ford, Philip Noyce, John Milius and Steven Zaillian. They also discuss the virtues of an outstanding ensemble cast that features the likes of Willem Dafoe, James Earl Jones, Anne Archer, Thora Birch, Joaquim de Almeida, Henry Czerny, Harris Yulin, Raymond Cruz, Benjamin Bratt and Miguel Sandoval. Paul even discusses the part he'd most love to play! The stacked cast makes for a particularly entertaining edition of the ‘Die Hard Oscars', and a tantalizing trivia quiz provides some stimulating brain-teasers…along with a warm and fuzzy moment or two. Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and Alex Miller discuss the first Mission: Impossible film. Stars Emmanuelle Béart, Tom Cruise, Henry Czerny, Vanessa Redgrave, Ving Rhames, and Jean Reno. After a mission in Prague goes sideways, IMF member Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) has to find the mole responsible. The first of what is a 7-film series so far based off the 1960's TV show, Mission: Impossible features a twisty spy story with some fun action set pieces courtesy of director Brian De Palma (The Untouchables) and writers David Koepp, Robert Towne, and Steven Zaillian. Tom Cruise is a bit edgier here than in later entries. Danny Elfman does faithful homages to the TV show theme with a score that hammers home the action beats. While the story might have one too many twists, the pacing and performances are strong. Still one of the best films in the series, Mission: Impossible starts the film franchise off on strong footing. Movie Synopsis: American Gangster is a 2007 American biographical crime film directed and produced by Ridley Scott and written by Steven Zaillian. The film is fictionally based on the criminal career of Frank Lucas, a gangster from La Grange, North Carolina who smuggled heroin into the United States on American service planes returning from the Vietnam War, before being detained by a task force led by Newark Detective Richie Roberts. The film stars Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe with co-stars Ted Levine, John Ortiz, Josh Brolin, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ruby Dee, Lymari Nadal and Cuba Gooding Jr. Development for the film initially began in 2000, when Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment purchased the rights to a New York magazine story about the rise and fall of Lucas. Two years later, screenwriter Steven Zaillian introduced a 170-page scriptment to Scott. Original production plans were to commence in Toronto for budget purposes; however, production eventually relocated permanently to New York City. Because of the film's rising budget Universal canceled production in 2004. After negotiations with Terry George, it was later revived with Scott at the helm in March 2005. Principal photography commenced over a period of five months from July to December 2006; filming took place throughout New York City and concluded in Thailand.

Now, I was scanning the web the other day, and I came across a book about the making of Quentin Tarantino‘s first feature film. Quite fascinated that someone took the time to dig into the unreleased, My Best Friend's Birthday, which I've spoken about a bit on my podcast and also written a couple of articles about the film. So, as per usual, I invited the author, Andy Rausch to the show to talk a bit more about his book. Before this interview, I did not know that Andy has spent years interviewing other prominent industry names and has authored over forty non-fiction on specific works of established entertainment contributors.Writing forty books is no small feat. Some of Rausch's publications include Turning Points in Film History (2004), The Films of Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro (2010), Making Movies with Orson Welles, a Gary Graver memoir, and Fifty Filmmakers: Conversations with Directors from Roger Avary to Steven Zaillian (2008).But today, l would like to get into the weeds on Rausch's 2019, My Best Friend's Birthday: The Making of a Quentin Tarantino Film book, which is the story of a group of friends who set out to make their own movie in 1983, financing it with Tarantino's minimum-wage earnings from his job at a video store. In most biographies and Tarantino histories, this unfinished $5,000 film is mentioned only in passing and is looked upon as little more than a curiosity. But with this oral history, author/editor Andrew J. Rausch details how each of the friends came together, other early film projects they worked on, and how they ended up making (or trying to make) a black-and-white screwball comedy.Check out the show notes below for links to some of Andy's other books, all available on Amazon.Enjoy my chat with writer, Andy Rausch. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2881148/advertisement

Book Vs. Movie: Searching for Bobby FischerThe true story of a chess prodigy Josh Waitzkin, his father's New York Times article, and the 1993 film The Margos gently enter into the world of chess (a game neither of us knows very well so, please be patient!) with Searching for Bobby Fischer. Josh Waitzkin was considered a chess prodigy when he played in tournaments around thew country as a young child. In 1985 his father, Fred Waitzkin, wrote an article for The New York Times “Fathering a Chess Prodigy” about the struggle to raise a son who is gifted in a sport/game. Fred wants his son to achieve his dreams, but he is fearful Josh won't be a normal kid (Josh eventually became an International Chess Master at 16.) The book Searching for Bobby Fischer came out in 1988 and the 1993 film was directed by Steven Zaillian and earned praise for its cinematography and performances. Bobby Fischer led a very complicated (and frankly, sad) childhood as a chess champion which later turned him into a hermit. Did the chess bring on his mental illness, or was that always going to happen? Why is he an ardent antisemite and an enemy of his country? Why did he disappear for so long? Between the 1985 article and the film--which did we like better? CONTENT WARNING -- -- -- This episode includes conversations about sexualized violence, rape, and childhood SA. -- This week, Nat and Alli are taking a cozy little jaunt up to Sweden. We'll look at the fjords, ride the metro, and definitely overlook the country's seething undercurrents of fascism, racism, and misogyny... Just kidding, we're talking about David Fincher and Steven Zaillian's unflinching adaptation of Stieg Larsson's brutal mystery/social commentary, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011). Starring Rooney Mara in the titular role as hacker Lisbeth Salander opposite Daniel Craig as journalist Mikael Blomkvist, Dragon Tattoo is a excoriating examination of Sweden's dark side – both its history of Nazi collaboration and its present mistreatment of women, immigrants, and the neuro-atypical. It's also a crackling thriller about two unusual investigators uncovering one family's extensive and often horrifying secrets as they unlock a 40-year-old mystery. Penny Marshall came on to Awakenings after Steven Spielberg stepped off the project apparently. Perhaps that's why it feels a bit different for a Marshall film. But how well does this pseudo-true story work as it recounts Dr. Oliver Sacks' experiments on patients with encephalitis lethargica in 1969? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our John Heard series with Marshall's 1990 film Awakenings. Is Awakenings more than just Marshall's bid at an Oscar? We think it's more, but it sure feels like Oscar bait. But again... couldn't it just be Marshall's desire to tell an interesting story and step outside her comedy box? Same goes for Robin Williams. He delivers the goods here as an introverted doctor who would rather work with worms than people. And of course Robert De Niro gives a performance where you're convinced he's afflicted with the disease the character of Dr. Sayer is trying to cure. Even Dr. Oliver Sacks, upon whose studies the film is based, thought De Niro performed accurate to the disease. But did Dr. Sacks have any issues with the film? Turns out he had some issues with Steven Zaillian's script. So do we. There are times it feels very written. Is that intrinsically bad? Or can it work? As for the rest of the cast, it's a great group of performers. Too bad Penelope Ann Miller isn't given more to do. All told, it's a strong movie with a powerful performances but also a script that feels very written and in the end, something you can see once then not worry about it again. Still, it's worth talking about so check it out then tune in. The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins!
