A rich and complex Gothic-Romance centring on the murky deeds of an ancient family. It is a wonderfully atmospheric piece that combines narrative, poetry, song, and descriptive writing to great effect. The character of Dick Turpin that we know today - the dashing highwaymen and unmatched horseman - can be said to stem directly from this novel, as the most famous part of the book (often published on its own in the past), Turpin's Ride To York, is devoted to him. Although seemingly little known to a modern audience, Ainsworth's 'Rookwood' gave the world the image of the highwayman with which we are all so familiar.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In this second pick for our Gothic Romance month, we discuss the stylish and evocative Guillermo Del Toro film Crimson Peak. This movie is Del Toro's homage to the great literature and film in the genre, including Hitchcock's Rebecca, Jane Eyre, The Mysteries of Udolpho, The Monk, and the work of Mario Bava. Del Toro also brings in some of his own obsessions like insects and ghosts to put his distinctive stamp on the genre, honoring its tropes in some ways and subverting them in others to bring a fresh, modern take to the well explored plot. We discuss the amazing and complex production design by Tom Sanders, the use of color in the film to suggest contrast between characters and settings, the importance of Kate Hawley's intricate costume design, and many other facets of this brilliant and enthralling film. Light a candle, throw on your fanciest nightgown, and explore the dark corners of Allerdale Hall with us!

Welcome to season 3! We're kicking off this season with a couple of episodes on our favorite films from the Gothic Romance genre, and who better to start us off than the master of the macabre, Alfred Hitchcock? Rebecca, starring Joan Fontaine and Sir Laurence Olivier, was Hitchcock's first film made in the US and his only Best Picture winner. The film also earned an Oscar for cinematographer George Barnes, whose talents with light, shadow, and camera movement created the moody atmosphere that pervades Rebecca. It was produced by David O. Selznick, who was coming off the huge success of Gone with the Wind and looking to make another big hit. Deeply faithful to its source material, Daphne du Maurier's best-selling novel, the film is a suspenseful cinematic take on classic Gothic Romance literature. The parallels with Bronte's Jane Eyre are numerous, but it's Hitchcock's ability to dramatize psychological terror that brings this movie into the modern age. Come to Manderley again with us, and watch out for Mrs. Danvers!

It's Halloween week, and time to confess that I'm strangely attracted to Gothic horror stories and creepy "romance," especially the many interpretations of the fascinating classic 19th century novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Each filmmaker and writer present different themes in their Jekyll and Hyde adaptations, from gender and sexual politics, personal ethics and morality, to abusive patriarchal structures and class and power inequities. The original story featured only men, but that hasn't stopped many modern adaptations of the story from featuring women as a romantic plot point and catalyst for Mr. Hyde's deeply disturbing and scary nuances.CW: brief scenes and mentions of physical, sexual and psychological abusehttps://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comChat with me on Threads: poppy_confessesRecognizing domestic violence and abuse is the first step.Do you recognize the signs of dating violence and abuse?Spark Notes has the full text of the novella and explorations of its themes and motifs."A strange story of mystery and adventure, love and laughter" says the trailer for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941).  I haven't laughed once in all the times I've watched this movie, but there's plenty of mystery, suspense and spookiness. Here's the "cheap little dreams" scene from the 1941 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde movie. Spencer Tracy is seriously creepy-evil and poor Ingrid had tried to get away from his abuse for weeks and months."...[Stevenson] did not wish to have the allegory rigidly defined. 'Everything is true,' he told Sidney Colvin, 'only the opposite is true too; you must believe both equally or be damned." Fascinating look at the many interpretations and adaptations of the Jekyll and Hyde story. This scene from Mary Reilly represents the undercurrent of class, intimacy, sexuality, passion and veiled threat that this version brings to the story. Honestly Malkovich is terrifying but Julia Roberts is unflappable as Mary.Support the showIf you enjoyed this episode, please click share in your podcast app and tell your friends! I'm back, partially rested and with some romance lingering in my soul. Good timing, cos this week's episode focuses on the heart as well as the blood that it pumps.  Isabel Cañas returns to the show to talk about her second novel, Vampires of El Norte – a sweeping historical love-story set against a backdrop of class tumult, war and … yeah… vampires. It's not a spoiler guys – it's in the title! Isabel speaks so eloquently about the relationship between vampirism and cultural legacy, about how it isn't only the undead who invade your space and drain your essence. She describes the intense, insane schedule of writing the book, how landscape invites the supernatural, Mexican boogeymen and boogeywomen, and historical fiction as feminist conundrum. Enjoy. With heart, soul and viscera.  Vampires of El Norte was published on August 15hth by Berkley Books mentioned: The Hacienda(2022), by Isabel CañasMexican Gothic (2020), by Silvia Moreno GarciaLone Women (2023), by Victor LavalleIsland Witch (forthcoming 2024), by Amanda Jayatissa Support Talking Scared on Patreon Come talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Support the show

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Starring Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, Cary Elwes, and Sir Anthony Hopkins.DescriptionCount Dracula, a 15th-century prince, is condemned to live off the blood of the living for eternity. Young lawyer Jonathan Harker is sent to Dracula's castle to finalize a land deal, but when the Count sees a photo of Harker's fiancée, Mina, the spitting image of his dead wife, he imprisons him and sets off for London to track her down. This is my favorite interpretation of the novel by far, elevated I think, by the institution of the love story between Dracula and Mina. This was the creation of Francis Ford Coppola, the director, and James V. Hart, the screenwriter. It is the perfect marriage between Gothic Horror and Gothic Romance!
