Alonso Duralde joins me to talk about his new book, 'Hollywood Pride: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Representation and Perseverance in Film'. Published in May 2024, 'Hollywood Pride' presents a history of film from the dawn of cinema to the "pansy craze" of the 1930s and the New Queer Cinema of the 1990s, all the way up to today. Illustrated with more than 175 colour and black-and-white images, 'Hollywood Pride' points to the bright future of LGBTQ+ representation in cinema, by revealing the story of the community's inclusion and erasure, its visibility and invisibility, and its triumphs and tragedies. ................ I'd Rather Be Reading

I'm so pleased to share with you a special bonus episode discussing the Oscars, which are quickly approaching this Sunday, March 10. The Academy Awards are the culmination of awards season, and there's so much to discuss when it comes to this year's ceremony. Will Oppenheimer sweep the awards, as is predicted? Why wasn't Barbie's star Margot Robbie nominated for Best Actress, or its director, Greta Gerwig, nominated for Best Director? Will Lily Gladstone of Killers of the Flower Moon make history by winning Best Actress, or will the coveted prize go to Emma Stone, star of Poor Things? There's so much to look forward to, and, in honor of Hollywood's biggest night, I have with me a gentleman who could easily be called an Oscars guru: Dave Karger, author of the new book 50 Oscar Nights: Iconic Stars and Filmmakers on Their Career Defining Wins, which came out on January 23. The anecdotes in this book are absolutely second to none, and Dave talks to everyone for the book, from Meryl Streep and Steven Spielberg to Julia Roberts and Martin Scorsese to Jane Fonda and Clint Eastwood; the book features never-before-told stories of the crème de la crème of awards shows and is told through a collection of interviews with actors, filmmakers, craftspeople, and those that helped bring the film to life and then won an Oscar for it. All told the winners included in the book span 60 years of Oscar winners and include quite a few that have achieved the elusive EGOT status, signifying that they've won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and a Tony. Heretofore, only 19 people have done this, by the way, including Elton John, Whoopi Goldberg, and John Legend, all of whom are profiled in Dave's book. Dave is a film expert, an award-winning journalist, and a host on Turner Classic Movies. He's been the Oscars expert on the Today Show for nearly a quarter century and has spent over 15 years writing about the Oscars for Entertainment Weekly. He has cohosted ABC's Live from the Red Carpet pre-show and has served as the Academy's official red carpet greeter on Oscar night. So, to put it mildly, Dave knows the Oscars! The stories he was able to get out of some of the most famous people in the world through this book are truly remarkable. In our conversation, Dave reveals if any of the celebrities he interviewed left him starstruck, where most people keep their Oscar statuette, how heavy the statuette is (I was shocked by his answer!), which Oscar moments make his so called Mount Rushmore of iconic moments from the awards show, the relevancy of winning an Oscar today, and, yes, I had to get his Oscar predictions. It's a can't miss conversation that I can't wait for you to tune into.   50 Oscar Nights: Iconic Stars and Filmmakers on Their Career Defining Wins by Dave Karger

Dave talks about how some winners revealed to him that they were going through tough times in their personal lives on the same night they were achieving Oscar glory as well as how the win impacted their career. Dave also talks about some of the more dishy stories in the book; like how Joan Crawford tried to horn in on Rita Moreno's Oscar glory, how Marlee Matlin was in Betty Ford for rehab when she got nominated and how John Travolta's "Adela Nazeem" gaffe cause one nominee to hit the flask. Other topics include: how awesome it was to write for Entertainment Weekly in the 1990s, the interview subject that intimidated him, how he made the transition from print journalist to TV host, how being a nice guy has served him well in Hollywood and why he's totally in awe of actors. Dave also plays a lightning round of movie-related questions from the Observation Dec, which produces musings about Porky's, Sixteen Candles, Singing in the Rain and Broadcast News.

Career Q&A with Kate Beckinsale from September 22, 2016. Moderated by Dave Karger. Kate Beckinsale early established herself playing in classic and literary adaptations, some with an Austen pedigree. While still a student at Oxford she played opposite Robert Sean Leonard as “Hero” in Kenneth Branagh’s version of Much Ado About Nothing. She also won the title role in the widely admired British mini-series adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma and particular notice for her performance in John Schlesinger’s version of the Emma update, Cold Comfort Farm. “It was from Cold Comfort Farm that I thought Kate would be perfect for the Charlotte character in The Last Days of Disco,” Stillman says, “and her role in the Schlesinger film was essentially Austen-derived. It was the first time I wrote a part with a particular actor in mind. The Last Days of Disco would be Kate’s first American role, winning her the London Film Critics’ “Best Supporting Actress” award, and leading to stardom in America in a series of notable films including Michael Bay’s epic Pearl Harbor, the hit romantic comedy Serendipity opposite John Cusack, and the ensemble drama, Laurel Canyon, with Christian Bale and Frances McDormand. Then began her remarkable run as the iconic action hero ‘Selene’ in the Underworld series for which she has recently completed the shoot for a fifth installment, focusing its story on the next generation of Vampires and Lycans and the war that continues to wage between the two species. Her additional film credits include her early British film Shooting Fish, Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, Contraband, Total Recall, Everybody’s Fine, the thriller Vacancy, Click, Jonathan Kaplan’s Brokedown Palace, Van Helsing, Absolutely Anything, and the independent dramas Nothing But The Truth, Stonehearst Asylum, The Face of an Angel, Snow Angels, and Fragments (aka Winged Creatures). Beckinsale’s television appearances include playing in One Against the Wind for Hallmark Films. On the stage, Beckinsale has appeared in ‘Clocks & Whistles’, ‘Sweetheart’, and the National Theatre’s touring production of ‘The Seagull.’ Beckinsale, who was born and raised in London before going on to Oxford, has for some years been based in Los Angeles.

The single largest investment most humans ever make is the purchase of their house.  Unfortunately, many of us fall short in the basic care and feeding.  None of us wants our abode to fall apart.  Typically we neither know what regular maintenance should be performed nor have the confidence to step into some of the more technical areas (like electrical). Joe Slawter, from Triumph Home Improvement, joins us in studio to talk house.  Joe takes us on a voyage that includes what to look for when buying a home, tasks that every home owner should be able to perform, tasks that most home owners shouldn't perform, thoughts on remodeling and what to do if you find pirates in your walls.  Your house will be happy that you listened to this episode.  You'll be happy because you'll save yourself time and money down the road, not to mention the endorphin rush from this entertaining and funny discussion.  Pirates? This episode also includes feedback from Will's kids as they work through TODAY movie expert Dave Karger's suggestions from Family Movie Night Solved.  It turns out Pee Wee Herman was onto something.
