Dennis is joined via Zoom by TCM host Dave Karger to discuss his new book, 50 Oscar Nights: Iconic Stars and Filmmakers On Their Career Defining Wins, which features delicious new interviews with icons like Nicole Kidman, Jane Fonda, Martin Scorsese and Mel Brooks as well as lesser-known winners like Precious screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher, documentarian Jessica Yu and sound mixer Kevin O'Connell who was nominated 20 times before finally taking home the gold for Heartbreak Ridge. Dave talks about how some winners revealed to him that they were going through tough times in their personal lives on the same night they were achieving Oscar glory as well as how the win impacted their career. Dave also talks about some of the more dishy stories in the book; like how Joan Crawford tried to horn in on Rita Moreno's Oscar glory, how Marlee Matlin was in Betty Ford for rehab when she got nominated and how John Travolta's "Adela Nazeem" gaffe cause one nominee to hit the flask. Other topics include: how awesome it was to write for Entertainment Weekly in the 1990s, the interview subject that intimidated him, how he made the transition from print journalist to TV host, how being a nice guy has served him well in Hollywood and why he's totally in awe of actors. Dave also plays a lightning round of movie-related questions from the Observation Dec, which produces musings about Porky's, Sixteen Candles, Singing in the Rain and Broadcast News.

Sometimes funny just hits a little differently....On this episode we harken back to some cinema that made it's bow at the last edition of the Toronto International Film Festival and drops on Disney+ here in Canada today(Hulu in the States).  It's time for Quiz Lady.Anne (Awkwafina), a brilliant but tightly wound, gameshow-obsessed young woman, and her estranged, train-wreck of a sister Jenny (Sandra Oh), must work together to help cover their mother's gambling debts. When Anne's beloved dog is kidnapped, they set out on a wild, cross-country trek to get the cash the only way they know how: by turning Anne into a bona-fide gameshow champion. It's broad, slapsticky and borderline offensive at times, but it owns it with great performances and comedic beats that aren't afraid to get its audience feeling a tiny bit uncomfortable for laughing while simultaneously being invested in the characters emotional arc.We had the pleasure of sitting down with director Jessica Yu to talking about getting the job, working with a duo like Sandra Oh and Awkwafina and making a female driven film that isn't afraid to lean into a joke that pushes the boundaries of our politically correct universe.'Quiz Lady' is on Disney+ (and Hulu in the US) now.

As climate change, wildfires, and decades-long megadroughts continue to ravage once-vibrant parts of our planet, humanity is experiencing an overdue reckoning about our most precious resource: water. Enter director Jessica Yu and her film Last Call at the Oasis, a documentary that firmly establishes the urgency of the global water crisis as the central issue facing our world in the 21st century. The film illustrates the paramount role that water plays in our lives, exposes the defects in how we currently manage water, and highlights communities already struggling with polluted water, poor water management, and unyielding drought. Featuring activist Erin Brockovich, several respected water experts, and social entrepreneurs championing revolutionary solutions, the film posits that humanity can address this problem if we are willing to act now. The future of our planet, and our species, hangs in the balance. Originally published in February of 2012. Visit g.co/talksatgoogle/LastCallAtTheOasis to watch the video of this event.

Girlboss, gatekeep, gaslight is GenZ mocking the “live, laugh, love” trope. “Gaslight every moment, Gatekeep every day, Girlboss beyond words." Girlboss refers to a feminist icon, but the term itself containers internalized sexism and misogyny. And, as a Vox article (https://www.vox.com/22466574/gaslight-gatekeep-girlboss-meaning) puts it, “Gaslight” has become the trendy synonym for lying — particularly a strain of lying where someone denies an obvious truth — and “gatekeep” has become interchangeable with discrimination. The three terms - girlboss, gatekeep, gaslight - are typically associated with white feminism, a topic that Julie Kim and Jessica Yu will be discussing in this episode of the ANAYA podcast. The conversation also includes Asian American feminism, BLM and what it means to be in solidarity. Julie is a writer and organizer in Queens, NY. She works in local politics and focuses on issues of gender, immigration, and Asian America. She is the co-founder of Asian American Feminist Collective, which engages in intersectional feminist politics grounded within communities with backgrounds that encompass East, Southeast, and South Asian, Pacific Islander, multi-ethnic and diasporic Asian identities. “Glory” premiered on April 30th 2019, and marks the halfway point to the acclaimed mini-series. It was written by Tracey Scott Wilson and directed by Jessica Yu. We see two moments of choreography in this episode, the first is the rehearsal sequence featuring the infamous Manson trio, originally choreographed by Fosse and reconstructed by Lloyd Culbreath and Pam Sousa. The second is the nightmare “Pippin medley” that acts as the finale to the episode, choreographed by Joan McCracken herself, Susan Misner. All of our music this episode comes from the musical Pippin, with all music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The cast of Pippin features Ahmad Simmons as Ben Vereen, Lindsay Nicole Chambers as Leland Palmer, Bahiyah Hibah as Candy Brown, and Alexis Carra as the fictional Sherry (said to be based on the experiences of original cast member Jennifer Nairn-Smith). Also in the cast are Nina Lafarga, Peter Chursin, Emma Caymares, Paloma Garcia-Lee, Tessa Grady, Colin Bradbury, Michael Hartung, Raymond Baynard and Michael McArthur. At the premiere of his film Cabaret, Bob is weighed down by the memory of his flop Sweet Charity three years earlier. But when the reviews come in they call Cabaret a masterpiece, meaning Bob has a “blank check” in the entertainment industry. So in the rehearsal room for Pippin Bob follows his gut. Calling the script “boring and small,” he chooses to “blow the whole thing up” both by demanding script changes and conspicuously sleeping with the entire female ensemble. That is, except for the one dancer avoiding his advances - a young woman named Annie Reinking.  Gwen drops by Pippin rehearsal to confide in Bob that the show is in trouble, but he finds himself too wrapped up in his own career to make time for hers. Gwen is ready to move onto the next project - and has already secured the rights to turn the play Chicago into a musical. But Bob has a lot of job offers after this and can’t guarantee Chicago is the next thing he wants to do.” On top of her career, things are sleeping away in Gwen’s personal life as her best friend Joan Simon is in the hospital with only a month to live.  Bob is pressuring the authors to change the ending of Pippin, for the title character to choose lighting himself on fire rather than fall in love. He’s also making his power known in his courting of the female ensemble: taking away a featured spot in the show’s “Manson Trio” from a dancer who won’t sleep with him and giving it to Annie, who “knows she doesn’t have to visit his hotel room to get the solo.” Months later, Bob calls Gwen at 3am asking her to come to Washington DC and help him fix the end of the show. In bed with her new boyfriend, she hangs up on him. But in the following year as he wracks up Tony, Emmy and Oscar Awards for Best Direction, he conspicuously thanks “a good friend of mine, Gwen Verdon,” for her contributions. But it’s been 13 years since she won her last Tony Award, and spending time at home with their daughter just isn’t enough for a woman who “won’t rest until she knows she has it all.” Bob is on his own downward spiral though. Much like the title character in Pippin, Bob is looking for something fulfilling - completely fulfilling. In a fever dream, Ben Vereen, Paddy, Gwen and his female conquests taunt Bob to jump out his hotel room window, with Gwen saying “the ones who die young, they’re the ones who live forever. If you do this, you’ll eclipse me, you’ll eclipse everyone.” But it’s the thought of their daughter Nicole that keeps him from jumping, much to the chagrin of the voices in his head.
