Was solltest du tun?
In this episode, Sean Pert shares his experiences of gendered expectations of how to interact with clients on placement, the benefits of being a male SLT where male clients and fathers find it easier to identify with a male SLT, having to invent your professional persona because of a lack of role models in the profession, and breaking down barriers for men to enter the profession by having conversations about men in SLT. Sean also talks about linguistic racism, the importance of supporting home languages for bilingual clients, and working to ensure equity in service provision for all clients.
Alison shares her perspective on why structure is so much more than just an organisational chart or job descriptions. She compares a well-structured MSP to an orchestra, where the conductor sets the pace and ensures each musician plays their part in harmony. In an MSP, the leadership team acts as the conductor, guiding different departments while allowing them to operate effectively within their roles. Without this level of coordination, businesses risk becoming chaotic, where people take on mismatched roles, processes break down, and leadership gets bogged down in daily operations rather than focusing on strategic growth. One of the key takeaways from this conversation is the importance of defining leadership roles early on. Many MSP owners make the mistake of promoting internally without fully assessing whether the individual is ready for leadership. Just because someone is a brilliant technical expert or account manager doesn't mean they'll thrive in a leadership position. Alison emphasises that the transition from a technical role to a senior leadership team (SLT) role requires different skills—strategic thinking, communication, and the ability to manage and inspire a team. That's why it's crucial to evaluate potential leaders based on their ability to drive the business forward, rather than simply their tenure or technical expertise. We also touch on the reality that most MSPs don't get past the £1 million turnover mark, largely due to poor structure. If an MSP wants to scale beyond this, it needs to establish a proper SLT with clear departmental functions, accountability, and measurable outcomes. But as we discuss, there's no shop called 'SLTs R Us' where MSP owners can simply pick out a ready-made leadership team. Instead, they have to be intentional about developing leaders internally or bringing in external talent who align with their business vision and culture. Alison highlights the critical need for strong communication across all levels of an MSP. Many businesses assume that everyone understands the company vision, but often, strategy is only understood at board level while the rest of the team remains out of the loop. This creates internal conflicts, especially between service and sales teams, as they struggle to see how their roles contribute to the overall business success. The solution? A structured approach to internal communication—regular meetings, clear role definitions, and alignment on key objectives so that every team member knows their contribution to the bigger picture. Recruiting the right leaders is another major challenge for MSPs, especially when filling gaps in an SLT. Alison advises MSP owners to start by defining exactly what they need from a role before hiring. Is it a Chief Technology Officer, a Head of Operations, or a Commercial Director? More importantly, does this person need to come from a similar-sized MSP or from a different background? Bringing in someone who has only worked in a highly structured corporate environment may struggle in a fast-moving MSP where adaptability is key. Understanding the culture and operational pace of an MSP is just as important as technical expertise. We also explore the growing trend of fractional leadership, which is becoming an invaluable solution for MSPs that need experienced leadership but don't require (or can't afford) full-time roles. Many MSPs looking to scale can benefit from a fractional CIO, CTO, or COO who brings expertise and strategic oversight without the long-term commitment of a permanent hire. This approach provides flexibility, ensures that high-level decisions are being made, and prevents business owners from becoming overwhelmed by operational responsibilities. The conversation then shifts to leadership models and how they impact MSP structure. Alison emphasises that there's no one-size-fits-all model—every MSP must build a structure that fits its size, growth ambitions, and company culture. However, certain fundamentals remain universal: defining a clear vision, having structured departmental plans, and ensuring that every role contributes to business growth. Whether a business is running a flat structure with few management layers or a more hierarchical setup, the key is clarity—who is responsible for what, how decisions flow, and how success is measured. One of the biggest pitfalls we see in MSPs is a lack of focus on operational efficiency. Many MSPs end up stagnating at break-even because they fail to measure success properly. Business owners must be clear on what their teams need to deliver. Are they driving revenue? Improving client retention? Expanding service offerings? Without these key performance indicators, an MSP can fall into the trap of 'busyness' without real business progress. Alison leaves us with a final thought: MSPs need to take structure seriously if they want to grow beyond the owner-operator phase. Every MSP must define what success looks like, ensure clear communication across the team, and build a leadership structure that supports both day-to-day operations and long-term strategic goals. Whether this means promoting from within, hiring externally, or leveraging fractional leadership, the key is to be proactive rather than reactive. Egal, was andere sagen, Gott sieht das Potential in dir.
In this podcast, we delve into Abbie's experience of cultural diversity in the HSE community and SLT in particular. She shares how this diversity shapes her daily work life, especially as she supports clients during some of their most vulnerable moments. Abbie hopes that this conversation shines a light on what is often a significant blind spot for those who don't face these challenges daily. Her aim is to foster greater compassion, acceptance, and awareness, ultimately leading to better support for culturally diverse staff in the workplace.

In 1.

Wednesday, 22 January 2025 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Matthew 6:30 “And if the herbage of the field, today being and tomorrow throwing into the furnace, God thus enrobes, not much more you – little-faithed?” (CG). In the previous verse, Jesus made the comparison between the lilies and Solomon, stating that the lilies exceed Solomon in how they are arrayed. Now, to explain why that is important to consider, He next says, “And if the herbage of the field.” The word is new, chortos. It literally signifies a court, garden, field, etc. where grass grows. Thus, by implication, it refers to that which grows in such a place. This would be inclusive of grass, but not limited to it. In this case, saying grass is insufficient because Jesus has just been speaking of lilies. Switching to grass confuses the analogy. Rather, using herbage allows for the inclusion of whatever has grown in the field, including any lilies that pop up to adorn it. Understanding this, He continues with, “today being and tomorrow throwing into the furnace.” Here is another new word, klibanos. It refers to an earthen pot which is used for baking. As such, it is a furnace or oven. It corresponds to the Hebrew word tanur. Today, because of the popular nature of Indian food, many people know of their tandoor which is quite similar. Depending on the style of pot, it is either heated from the inside and then bread is slapped onto the outside to be baked, or it is heated from the outside and bread is slapped onto the inside to be baked. Either way, the flat bread adheres to the side until removed by the baker when it is turned and heated on the other side. In the case of Jesus' words, it would be one heated from the inside. This is because the herbage is thrown into it. The point so far is that Jesus has spoken of the immensely intricate and beautiful nature of the lily, outshining the beauty of Solomon. And yet, in a day, it is dried up and dead, becoming stubble, useful only for burning in an oven. Understanding this, how the next words are applied varies based on the translation, “God thus enrobes, not much more you.” Most translations apply these words to the lilies – “Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven” (NKJV). However, some apply them to the hearer in the final clause – “...God so clothes much rather you, ye of little faith!” (SLT). Without the dogmatic nature of other translations, the ambiguous nature of the CG translation allows the reader to come to his own conclusion – “And if the herbage of the field, ... God thus enrobes,” or “God thus enrobes, not much more you?” Either way, if God has ordained it to be this way, the point is understandable because of what Jesus has already said previously about the lilies. However, another complication arises because of how translations are rendered. There are different ways of interpreting what Jesus is saying concerning being clothed. One is that man is more important than the lily, and so God will tend to our needs in a way that is commensurate with the honor and dignity that man has been bestowed as the pinnacle of His creation. This is how most translations express the thought. They do this by either shuffling the words around and/or inserting words to fit this presupposition, such as “will He not much more clothe you” (NKJV, et al). The SLT omits the negation (not) and comes to the same general thought, “God so clothes much rather you.” The word amphiennumi, to clothe or enrobe, is used. It signifies to put on clothes or to enrobe. In this case, God is the One who is performing the action. The way the words are structured it seems more likely to point to the state of the clothing, not a later granting of it, “God thus enrobes, not much more you.” The verb is present tense, not future, as the NKJV and others imply. As such, Jesus is not saying God is going to give us garments to enrobe us, but that He has given us garments that enrobe us – meaning the dignity and honor of being a human. The comparison is to the beauty of the lily, which didn't labor or spin. It was simply enrobed with beauty. Unlike the lily, man is enrobed with intelligence and ability. Therefore, he has the necessary basics to provide himself with garments. Therefore, why should we worry about what we will wear? When the time for garments is needed, we will obtain what we need because we have already been enrobed with the garments of humanity by God. Understanding this, Jesus next uses an adjective to describe those who are anxious about such things, calling them “little-faithed?” The word is also new, oligopistos, coming from two separate words that indicate little in number or low in quantity and faith. He is saying that humans who worry about such things are little-faithed. They walk around constantly worried about what might be. Instead, they should trust that God has given them the wisdom and ability to take care of themselves. In turn, they should be grateful to Him for such blessings. Life application: The basic intent of Jesus' words, regardless of some of the pointless or obscuring changes in translations, is that man has importance to God. He is the highest point of God's creation, and we should conduct our lives in a manner that demonstrates that we believe it is so. Not in arrogance or boasting, but in humility that God has given us such wisdom and ability. We should provide for our needs as humans because we are human. We shouldn't fret about what lies ahead when we are fully capable of using what God has given us to provide for ourselves because He has and continues to provide for us. Let us do so at all times. And as we do, may we remember to thank and praise Him for allowing us the honor of existing in His presence for all eternity because of what He has done to reconcile us to Himself through Jesus Christ – the One enrobed in humanity and yet fully God. Thank God for Jesus Christ our Lord. Glorious God, because of Jesus, we are granted greater and eternal garments of righteousness so that we can stand in Your presence for all eternity. Why You have so favored us is hard to imagine, but we accept that it is so. We have faith that what Jesus has done is sufficient to carry us through to behold Your glory forever. Amen.

Wednesday, 11 September 2024 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Matthew 4:1 “Then Jesus, He was led up into the desolate by the Spirit to be tested by the Traducer” (CG). Matthew 4 begins with the temptation of Christ. However, this is not to be disassociated from what was just presented, as evidenced by the beginning word “then.” Jesus left Galilee, His home of many years to be baptized by John. This was to fulfill all righteousness. The law set forth precepts to be followed. That included following the words of God's prophets who spoke on His behalf. This can be inferred from the words of Deuteronomy where false prophets were to be ignored. If this is so, then true prophets were to be acknowledged and heeded. Jesus came to heed the call of the prophet. In His baptism, the Holy Spirit came upon Him and the voice from the heavens acknowledged that Jesus was His Son and that He stood approved of God. With that divine approbation acknowledged, Jesus now begins His ministry. However, as judgment begins at the house of God, Jesus' ministry begins with a time of testing. That is what is now seen at the opening of Matthew 4 where it says, “Then Jesus, He was led up into the desolate.” As seen in Chapter 3, the word describing the area is an adjective, even if it expresses a noun. To retain the form of an adjective, “desolate” rather than “wilderness” is used. Regardless, in Scripture, such an area is considered a place of testing as well as one that can (and should) result in a closeness to God. Without the distractions of the world of man, one can more fully commune with his Creator and contemplate his position and purpose before God. This leading was “by the Spirit.” Mark's gospel uses a more forceful term, saying Jesus was essentially driven by the Spirit into the desolate. This area of Judea is especially barren, and walking through it, even for a day, is challenging for the mind and body. The testing Jesus was to endure would be great, and His reliance on God would be absolutely paramount. This was because He was “to be tested.” The word is peirazó from peira; to test (objectively). HELPS Word Studies says, “‘The word means either test or tempt' (WP, 1, 348). Context alone determines which sense is intended, or if both apply simultaneously.” Almost all translations say “tempted.” Only the SLT uses “tried.” There is temptation involved in this testing, but this is a test or a trial more than anything else. The temptation will come after an extended period of fasting. Thus, the entire time is to be considered, not merely the temptations at the end of it, even if the point of waiting is to lure Jesus with temptations. This translation is more likely because of what it says in Luke 4:13 – “Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.” The time is one of looking for a weakness that can later be exploited. It was just said by the voice from heaven that Jesus is the One “in whom I approved.” He is now being tested in this capacity, just as Adam was tested concerning obeying his Creator in the garden. As for Jesus, this period of testing is set to be conducted “by the Traducer.” The word is an adjective, diabolos, devilish. However, being preceded by the definite article, a noun form becomes necessary to make a separation between its uses without the article. Vincent's Word Studies says – “The word means calumniator, slanderer. It is sometimes applied to men, as to Judas (John 6:70); in 1 Timothy 3:11 (slanderers); and in 2 Timothy 3:3, and Titus 2:3 (false accusers). In such cases never with the article. The Devil, Satan, the god of this world (ὁ διάβολος [ho diabolos]), is always with the article and never plural. This should be distinguished from another word, also wrongly rendered devil in the A. V. – δαίμων [diamon], and its more common neuter form δαιμόνιον [diamonin], both of which should be translated demon, meaning the unclean spirits which possessed men, and were cast out by Christ and his apostles.” As for the translation, the use of “devil” is almost universal. But that is a transliteration. As noted, the word is not a name. Rather, it has a meaning. Vincent's says “calumniator” or “slanderer.” Strong's says, “a traducer.” Traduce means “to expose to shame or blame by means of falsehood and misrepresentation.” The difference between slander and traduce is that traduce stresses the resulting humiliation and distress of a victim. This is closer to the role of the devil. As noted, being an adjective, a literal translation would be “the devilish,” but to set this entity apart from others who may be devilish, using a capitalized noun appears to give the best sense – the Traducer. Life application: There are times when following the herd mentality is seen in translations. There may be only one translation that deviates from what every other translation says. It may be that this is an entirely wrong translation, but it may be that following the herd was the easiest path to take for all the others. Be careful not to accept a translation just because it is different, but be sure not to reject it for this reason as well. See if a commentary exists that may give a clue as to why there are differences. In the end, you will only get out of your time in God's word what you put into it. Enjoy what He has given, revel in the detail, and consider each passage as to how it fits into the surrounding context. This word is a sacred treasure passed on to us as it flowed forth from the mind of God. Rejoice in it! And above all, rejoice in the One who has given it to us. God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – has blessed us with this word. Thank You, O God, for it! Yes, Lord God, we are grateful to You for Your kind hand of blessing. You have created us, redeemed us, and have given us Your word to understand how it all came about. Thank You, above all, for Jesus, the Subject of this precious word. Hallelujah and Amen.

This is: Singular learning theory: exercises, published by Zach Furman on August 30, 2024 on LessWrong. Thanks to Jesse Hoogland and George Wang for feedback on these exercises. In learning singular learning theory (SLT), I found it was often much easier to understand by working through examples, rather than try to work through the (fairly technical) theorems in their full generality. These exercises are an attempt to collect the sorts of examples that I worked through to understand SLT. Before doing these exercises, you should have read the Distilling Singular Learning Theory (DSLT) sequence, watched the SLT summit YouTube videos, or studied something equivalent. DSLT is a good reference to keep open while solving these problems, perhaps alongside Watanabe's textbook, the Gray Book. Note that some of these exercises cover the basics, which are well-covered in the above distillations, but some deliver material which will likely be new to you (because it's buried deep in a textbook, because it's only found in adjacent literature, etc). Exercises are presented mostly in conceptual order: later exercises freely use concepts developed in earlier exercises. Starred (*) exercises are what I consider the most essential exercises, and the ones I recommend you complete first. 1. *The normal distribution, like most classical statistical models, is a regular (i.e. non-singular[1]) statistical model. A univariate normal model with unit variance and mean μR is given by the probability density p(x|μ)=12πexp(12(xμ)2). Assume the true distribution q(x) of the data is realizable by the model: that is, q(x)=p(x|μ0) for some true parameter μ0. 1. Calculate the Fisher information matrix of this model (note that since we have only a single parameter, the FIM will be a 1x1 matrix). Use this to show the model is regular. 2. Write an explicit expression for the KL divergence K(μ) between q(x) and p(x|μ), as a function of the parameter μ. This quantity is sometimes also called the population loss. [See Example 1.1, Gray Book, for the case of a 2D normal distribution] 3. Using K(μ) from b), give an explicit formula for the volume of "almost optimal" parameters, V(ϵ)={μK(μ)
Education News Headline Roundup [00:08:10]The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is once again majorly delayed. On August 7th the U.S. Department of Education announced a rollout process for the 2025-2026 form that includes an October 1st date for limited testing, with the application set to open to all students on December 1 2024, two months later than the typical release date for the application. A federal appeals court has allowed an Iowa law that bans books with sexual content from K-12 school libraries and restricts instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity before seventh grade to take effect. This overturns a previous injunction that had paused the law, signed by Republican Governor Kim Reynolds in 2023.An update to a previously discussed story: in the wake of former Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse announcing his resignation from the University of Florida presidency, the UF student newspaper, the Independent Florida Alligator, has reported that Sasse may have been forced out over escalating tensions with the university's board chairman, Morteza “Mori” Hosseini.Social Learning Theory: Bandura, Bobo, and Beyond [00:15:16]Social Learning Theory (SLT) seeks to explain how we learn behaviors by observing and imitating others. This episode explores SLT's unique position between behaviorism, which focuses on observable behaviors, and cognitive psychology, which emphasizes internal processes like memory and perception. We'll discuss how Albert Bandura revolutionized psychology by developing new theories on aggression and modeled behaviors, challenging the dominant behaviorist views of the time. We'll cover Bandura's famous Bobo Doll experiment and its groundbreaking findings on observational learning, and we'll also introduce you to other key figures in the development of SLT, like Julian Rotter, who developed the concept of locus of control, and Walter Mischel, known for the marshmallow test on delayed gratification. We'll also tease apart the core concepts of SLT (modeling, self-efficacy, and vicarious reinforcement) to show how they work together to shape behavior. Finally, we'll discuss the broader applications and criticisms of SLT in areas like education, media, and even advertising, where the power of observed behavior is leveraged in both positive and controversial ways.Sources & Resources:The rollout for the updated FAFSA application has been delayed again : NPRAfter Botched Rollout, FAFSA Is Delayed for a Second Year - The New York TimesFAFSA Rollout Delayed Again: Here's What to Know | Paying for College | U.S. NewsU.S. Department of Education Announces Schedule and New Process to Launch 2025-26 FAFSA Form‘There's nothing more important right now': Cardona commits to fixing FAFSA disaster - POLITICOFederal judges allow Iowa book ban to take effect this school year | AP NewsObama addresses healthcare website glitches - BBC NewsFederal appeals court rules Iowa's book ban law can take effectSasse's spending, exit leave lingering questions at UFUniversity of Florida Pres. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Dialogue introduction to Singular Learning Theory, published by Olli Järviniemi on July 8, 2024 on LessWrong. Alice: A lot of people are talking about Singular Learning Theory. Do you know what it is? Bob: I do. (pause) Kind of. Alice: Well, I don't. Explanation time? Bob: Uh, I'm not really an expert on it. You know, there's a lot of materials out there that Alice: that I realistically won't ever actually look at. Or, I've looked at them a little, but I still have basically no idea what's going on. Maybe if I watched a dozen hours of introductory lectures I'd start to understand it, but that's not currently happening. What I really want is a short overview of what's going on. That's self-contained. And easy to follow. Aimed at a non-expert. And which perfectly answers any questions I might have. So, I thought I'd ask you! Bob: Sorry, I'm actually really not Alice: Pleeeease? [pause] Bob: Ah, fine, I'll try. So, you might have heard of ML models being hard to interpret. Singular Learning Theory (SLT) is an approach for understanding models better. Or, that's one motivation, at least. Alice: And how's this different from a trillion other approaches to understanding AI? Bob: A core perspective of SLT is studying how the model develops during training. Contrast this to, say, mechanistic interpretability, which mostly looks at the fully trained model. SLT is also more concerned about higher level properties. As a half-baked analogue, you can imagine two approaches to studying how humans work: You could just open up a human and see what's inside. Or, you could notice that, hey, you have these babies, which grow up into children, go through puberty, et cetera, what's up with that? What are the different stages of development? Where do babies come from? And SLT is more like the second approach. Alice: This makes sense as a strategy, but I strongly suspect you don't currently know what an LLM's puberty looks like. Bob: (laughs) No, not yet. Alice: So what do you actually have? Bob: The SLT people have some quite solid theory, and some empirical work building on top of that. Maybe I'll start from the theory, and then cover some of the empirical work. Alice: (nods) I. Theoretical foundations Bob: So, as you know, nowadays the big models are trained with gradient descent. As you also know, there's more to AI than gradient descent. And for a moment we'll be looking at the Bayesian setting, not gradient descent. Alice: Elaborate on "Bayesian setting"? Bob: Imagine a standard deep learning setup, where you want your neural network to classify images, predict text or whatever. You want to find parameters for your network so that it has good performance. What do you do? The gradient descent approach is: Randomly initialize the parameters, then slightly tweak them on training examples in the direction of better performance. After a while your model is probably decent. The Bayesian approach is: Consider all possible settings of the parameters. Assign some prior to them. For each model, check how well they predict the correct labels on some training examples. Perform a Bayesian update on the prior. Then sample a model from the posterior. With lots of data you will probably obtain a decent model. Alice: Wait, isn't the Bayesian approach very expensive computationally? Bob: Totally! Or, if your network has 7 parameters, you can pull it off. If it has 7 billion, then no. There are way too many models, we can't do the updating, not even approximately. Nevertheless, we'll look at the Bayesian setting - it's theoretically much cleaner and easier to analyze. So forget about computational costs for a moment. Alice: Will the theoretical results also apply to gradient descent and real ML models, or be completely detached from practice? Bob: (winks) Alice: You know what, maybe I'll just let you t...

Justin Schweitzer, OD, FAAO, is a leader at Vance Thompson Vision in Sioux Falls, SD, focused on managing glaucoma, anterior segment disease, and pre-operative cataract and glaucoma care alongside his surgical partners. Since Dr. Schweitzer sees glaucoma diagnosis as a puzzle with multiple pieces beyond pressure, they discuss the latest in diagnostic tools, medications, drug delivery systems, at-home monitoring, and surgical procedures. They also consider the difference between patient-based treatments compared to physician-based interventions, such as SLT and MIGS. Finally, they discuss the importance of managing ocular surface disease to improve quality of life for patients and the potential impact of AI to improve efficiency for optometrists. Moment #65 // If you want to be a great leader, you have to learn to read the play – to know when it's appropriate to push one of your people harder, when it's appropriate to work more closely with them, and when it's appropriate to stand back and let them get on with it.In this Moment, I take a look at Situational Leadership Theory (SLT). This model gives us guidance for how to adapt our style so that we have the best chance of getting through to our people, and enabling them to be successful.Of course, the world isn't clear cut… there's 1,000 shades of gray, and every individual is different. Your style will never be as definitive as the SLT model might suggest. But it's a really good mental frame to remind us to adapt our style for the individual, rather than pursuing a one-size-fits-all strategy. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.63: Reading the Play.————————FREE QUIZ: I've developed a 3-question quiz that'll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.
