In a recent episode of Valley Today, host Janet Michael engaged in a compelling discussion with Michael Diaz, Chairman of the Northern Shenandoah Valley Community Veterans Engagement Board (CVEB). The conversation aimed to shed light on the essential services and support that the CVEB provides to veterans in the local community. Diaz, donning many hats, passionately explained the board's mission and operations. Janet opened the conversation by referring to a previous show featuring Dan Abel from the Rotary Club of Winchester, which highlighted the Healing Fields of Honor event at Handley High School. Diaz elaborated on Heroes Hill, where CVEB partners to provide services to veterans who might be unaware of their existence. The Healing Fields event involves placing 800 flags on the front lawn of Handley High School, symbolizing a profound tribute to service members. Michael Diaz detailed the origins of the CVEB, which was established in 2017 after branching off from a larger four-state veterans board. The CVEB serves various counties including Frederick, Winchester, and Page, although they are flexible in referring veterans to other boards if needed. Diaz discussed the unique function of the CVEB, which, while promoted by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), operates independently. The board's primary objective is to identify local veterans' needs and rally community stakeholders to address these needs. “The VA operates at a 35,000-foot level, focusing on big-picture items,” Diaz explained. The CVEB aims to meet specific local requirements that may be overlooked by broader federal programs. They also relay community feedback to the VA, representing a private-public partnership geared towards bettering veterans' lives. Throughout the conversation, Diaz emphasized the importance of community partnerships and resources. He noted that CVEB's activities range from financial assistance to housing and healthcare, with a roster of active and inactive community partners that help meet diverse needs. The board's efforts are holistic, involving organizations like Heroes on the River and Project Healing Waters, which provide recreational and therapeutic activities for veterans. These partnerships enable the board to minimize challenges by leveraging various community resources. Janet highlighted the critical role of awareness in accessing veteran services. Many veterans may not know about the resources available until they're in urgent need. Diaz urged veterans to apply early for benefits and engage with community organizations to preempt future challenges. He shared examples of how timely applications for disability ratings can significantly impact veterans' financial stability later in life. Diaz explained that CVEB's services extend to family members, recognizing the sacrifices made by veterans' families. The board also offers support for mental health issues and traumatic brain injuries, partnering with organizations like Brain Injury Services. Education is another crucial area, with Díaz noting that the GI Bill provides expansive opportunities for veterans, including degree programs and certifications, which significantly enhance their post-service lives. The discussion concluded with details about CVEB's physical and digital touchpoints. For those who cannot attend events like the Healing Fields of Honor, the board's website (nsvcveb.org) offers extensive resources and a membership directory. They also hold monthly meetings, fostering networking and collaboration among community organizations. Those meetings happen on the fourth Thursday of each month from 9am - 10:30am at 'The Hive' located on the campus of Shenandoah University. Janet wrapped up by encouraging family members and friends of veterans to reach out to CVEB. Whether accessing services or becoming community partners, engagement is key to strengthening the support network for veterans. Michael extended an open invitation to community organizations to join efforts in supporting veterans, making a collective impact on the lives of those who have served. With events like the Healing Fields of Honor and month-to-month community collaborations, CVEB aims to continue its mission of service above self.
Summer is just around the corner, and Winchester's Jim Barnett Park is gearing up for a season full of exciting events and activities. In this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael sat down with Chris Konyar, the City Parks Director, to unpack what's in store for residents and visitors alike. Kicking off the discussion with a splash, Chris highlighted the aquatics programs set to keep everyone cool and entertained. He shared that the outdoor pool building at Jim Barnett Park has been completely revamped with a fresh navy-blue paint job, aligning with the Winchester baseball theme colors. The pool opens on Memorial Day, and it promises to be a hub of activity from lap swimming to children's swim lessons. “We're in full gear right now,” Chris mentioned, speaking about the preparation efforts. “Lifeguard training, clean water, getting the building spruced up – it's a busy time.” He discussed the park's strategy to ensure a successful season, emphasizing the importance of community involvement and the benefits of having professional lifeguards on staff year-round. Chris and Janet also discussed the extensive summer programs that stretch beyond aquatics. The park offers a variety of camps, including basketball with Handley staff, soccer camps led by the Shenandoah University coach, and other sports and recreational camps. “Our sports camps are phenomenal,” Chris said, “and we've got something for all ages.” In addition to sports, the park hosts creative camps like Storytime Creation for preschoolers. There are even special events such as the Game of Skate on May 31st and the Fishing Rodeo on June 14th, which promises to be a fun-filled day for all ages. “It's a great atmosphere,” Chris noted, highlighting the community spirit that permeates these events. Another highlight of the summer will undoubtedly be the July 3rd fireworks event, aptly named Red, White, and Boom. Chris assured that this year's fireworks will be spectacular, with better planning and organization compared to last year's misfire. The event is set to include a variety of activities, food vendors, and live music, making it a memorable night for families and friends. This event also marks the kickoff of Parks and Recreation Month, which will feature numerous activities celebrating Winchester's parks and community spirit. Chris stressed the importance of early booking for the fireworks vendor to ensure a smooth event: “We're locked in,” he confirmed, making sure everything is set for an unforgettable celebration. The conversation wrapped up with a focus on ways to stay updated on park events and activities. Chris encouraged residents to visit the official website, grab a hard copy of the activity guide, and follow Winchester Parks and Rec on social media. “We've got a lot of cool stuff scheduled,” Chris concluded, underscoring the exciting summer that lies ahead. As Janet and Chris wrapped up their engaging chat, the anticipation for a bustling, activity-filled summer at Jim Barnett Park was palpable. Whether it's swimming, camping, sports, or special community events, the park promises something for everyone. So, grab your sunblock, check the activity guide, and dive into a summer full of fun and excitement at Jim Barnett Park!

For children, Shenandoah University's Nursing program will lead the Healthy Kids experience, featuring health education activities and giveaways. 'It's a great way for kids to start learning about healthy habits,' Janet noted. One of the festival's biggest draws is the variety of free and low-cost health screenings available. Services include blood pressure checks, cardiovascular screenings, and blood glucose testing. 'It's an initial entry point checkup,' said Wade. 'If your blood pressure reads high, you'll be advised to contact your primary care physician for follow-up.' Additionally, there will be fitness demonstrations running throughout the day, showcasing activities like Irish dancing and music therapy by Shenandoah University. A unique highlight is the boxing program for patients with Parkinson's disease. For those unfamiliar with virtual health visits, the festival offers a practical demonstration led by Valley Health Urgent Care. Attendees can experience a mock virtual visit to understand the process better, making it easier to opt for telehealth services in the future. Dr. Ermin Sinanovic, Executive Director of the Center for Islam in the Contemporary World at Shenandoah University and a Faculty Associate in Research at Cornell University, explores the concept of Mujaddid (the renewer of Islam) and their relevance in the 21st century. He studies how scholars have historically attempted to revive and reinterpret Islamic thought, questioning who might serve as the Mujaddid of our era. The conversation delves into the relationship between time and Muslims, why are Muslims always late? Muslims have lost their enchantment of nature, losing a spiritual connection to the natural world in modern times. Professor Ermin talks about the nation state and how Muslim scholars have struggled with political theory, leading to challenges in adapting to or resisting the modern nation-state model. The conversation contrasts the Caliphate with the nation-state, highlighting shifts in governance and identity. Many of my colleagues working in the public sector are skeptical of companies selling products to school districts. I've felt some of this skepticism myself as I've seen certain approaches gain traction because they're well-marketed (yet not evidence-based). So it's understandable to me that people would question the motives of companies selling products; especially in the for-profit space. The elephant in the room, of course, is that Dr. Karen, LLC is a for-profit EdTech company. I've also spent a fair amount of time interacting with people who either work for larger EdTech or curriculum companies, or who have started one themselves. Most of them are therapists, administrators, or teachers who felt inspired to create something who are trying to make a living doing something that matters. This would describe many of the hosts on the Be Podcast Network, which is why I wanted to invite one of the network co-founders, Ross Romano, to De Facto Leaders to talk about his experiences coaching EdTech and education-related start-up founders. Ross Romano has worked with over 100 companies and nonprofit organizations in the education space and collaborated with countless schools, districts, and educators. He is also Strategic Advisor for the American Consortium for Equity in Education and the Founding Program Chair of the Consortium's Excellence in Equity Awards.Prior to starting September Strategies, Ross was Managing Director of MindRocket Media Group, a K-12 marketing firm. Previously, he was head of communications for ASCD, working closely with the organization's authors, product developers, administrator members, constituent leaders, and advocacy teams on a diverse array of initiatives. Ross has created and/or hosted dozens of podcast series, written a number of white papers and ebooks, is a contributing editor to Educate AI Magazine, and has been a contributor to Entrepreneur, The Learning Counsel, edCircuit, Access & Equity PreK-12, and more.Ross serves on the advisory boards for Shenandoah University's Transformative Leadership program and Morning Brew Learning. Originally for seventh graders, the event now targets eighth graders and hosts about 3,000 students from seven school divisions. Shayla explains the origins of WOW, modeled off a southern program, and highlights its purpose—to give students a hands-on look at various careers available in their area. The expo includes industries like agriculture, manufacturing, IT, and healthcare. With employers providing interactive activities, students get to experience a day-in-the-life scenario for different jobs. We discuss how the event allows local businesses and industries to showcase the diversity of roles within their fields. I share anecdotes from previous expos, demonstrating how the event helps students think beyond typical job descriptions. For instance, kids learn that radio stations need more than DJs—they require salespeople, engineers, and programmers. The conversation also touches on how the WOW Expo encourages students to consider different career paths and sparks new interests. Shayla mentions the robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) program in Frederick County, aiding students in making more informed decisions about their future careers. We also talk about the logistics of participating in the expo. Businesses interested in being exhibitors can register easily and no fee is involved. There is a hospitality suite and lunch provided for exhibitors. Shayla highlights the variety of participants they've had in the past, from large corporations to small local businesses, underlining that all sorts of industries are welcome to join. Have you ever wondered how a tale of gorillas can touch upon the deepest themes of our human experience? Newbery Award-winning author Katherine Applegate joins us to unwrap the layers of The One and Only Family, her latest book that sees the beloved Ivan navigating the unpredictable waters of fatherhood. As Ivan's story unfolds with the birth of twins, we delve into the heart of freedom, the wild, and the impact of climate change, all while savoring the humor of gorilla toddlers and witnessing a father's growth. Katherine's enchanting blend of inspiration from the real Ivan's life and creative "what-ifs" showcases the profound freedom found in storytelling. The conversation then takes a turn towards the serious issue of book challenges, recoiling from the sting of censorship to the embrace of community and dialogue. Listen as Katherine shares the recent bittersweet journey of Wishtree, a book about welcoming that faced adversity through a book challenge in Virginia, yet found a silver lining through the solidarity of readers and advocates. Together with Katherine, we examine the role of literature in braving the choppy seas of censorship, and celebrate the unsung heroes like PEN America, VAASL, ALA, and librarian, writer, and book ambassador John Schu, who champion the power of storytelling and the discovery of that life-altering narrative. Over the past few weeks, I have been on a teaching tour in the USA, where I have been working predominantly with classical singers and teachers who want to learn more about contemporary commercial music styles. The feedback was overwhelming, and many of the singers expressed they had a deep desire to sing this music, but there was limited opportunity in higher education. Many of the teachers were surprised to learn that many of our philosophies and approaches aligned, but it is just that our teaching is geared towards creating a different aesthetic. I was extremely grateful and humbled by all the positive feedback. I believe it is time for higher education to embrace this music and there needs to be a hierarchical change for this to happen. My trip has inspired to replay segments of a former interview with Matt Edwards and Jacqulyn Zito-Edwards, this week on A Voice and Beyond.Matt and Jacqulyn have been working together on some ongoing research into the roots of the academic bias against popular music. You can go back and listen to episodes #99 and #101 for a full recap.Jacqulyn is an adjunct assistant professor of voice for the musical theatre program at Shenandoah Conservatory and serves on faculty at the CCM Vocal Pedagogy Institute. Matt has been working at Shenandoah University since 2010 as an Associate Professor, within the Voice and Musical Theatre departments. He is also the Coordinator of Musical Theatre Voice and Artistic Director of CCM Vocal Pedagogy Institute. In this fascinating episode, Matt and Jacqulyn delve deeply into the history of the classism and racism that has perpetuated the status quo in the training of CCM singers. Do you remember your favorite book as a child? If you do, there's probably a good reason for that. Must have left an impression on you. Something about it was impactful. Maybe it taught you something you didn't know before, or you were able to see yourself in the main character's shoes. Whatever the reason, children's stories are important in this episode, we're talking about taking those stories and adapting them to a new medium and even a new audience. This fall, I co-taught a First Year Seminar course at Shenandoah University with LaTasha Do'Zia, Executive Director of Selah Theatre Project. All semester, our students explored the concept of windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors (Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop's seminal concept) through multicultural picture books, performance, community service, and reflection and class discussion. This very special podcast episode is their culminating project for the semester. Narrated by FYS Mentor Jenny Cortez, you'll explore five different chapters or points of view involving windows and mirrors, ranging from visual storytelling, music and storytelling, books that resonated in childhood, how gender connects with storytelling, and the impact of the digital age and censorship and boundaries in storytelling. 1:25: How do we adapt children's picture books into visual storytelling for all ages? (Riley, Josie, Petra, Jaxon)6:44: How do you tell a story through performance? (Emma, Anna, Barbara, Tegan)12:40: Sponsor Ad14:22: What personal connections do you have to picture books and why? (Brooke, Kaitlyn, Jessica, Emane, Miles)19:51: How do gender and storytelling intersect with windows and mirrors? (Alejandro, Patrick, Adam)27:29: Blurred lines -- a look at how generational differences in media consumption impact issues of free speech and age appropriate media (Eli, Xavi)The opinions and ideas expressed here are those of the students. I hope that you find them as engaging and thought-provoking as I did.
