“God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.” How did John Piper craft this memorable motto? Tony Reinke tells the story.
QUOTES FOR REFLECTION “There are a lot of people who struggle mightily with this whole idea. They say, ‘If God is a God of love, he doesn't send people to hell. If God is a God of judgment, he can't be a God of love. I can't reconcile the two things.' Yet the Bible insists that not only is God a God both of love and wrath—not only do those two things not conflict with each other, but they actually establish each other. One without the other is nonsense. One without the other is meaningless. If you actually try to somehow extract, remove surgically, excise the Christian message of the wrath and judgment of God, what you actually have is nothing left at all.”~Tim Keller, Pastor & Author “If we do not protect God's wrath, we lose the bad news, and if we lose the bad news, we lose the good news — we lose the gospel.”~Tony Reinke, Senior Writer at DesiringGod.org “God's wrath is more horrifying than we can ever imagine, but he will pardon any who take refuge in the shelter Jesus provides.”~John Piper, Pastor & Author “'Til on that cross as Jesus diedThe wrath of God was satisfiedFor every sin on Him was laidHere in the death of Christ I live.”~“In Christ Alone” by Keith & Kristyn GettySERMON PASSAGEPsalm 7 (ESV)1 O Lord my God, in you do I take refuge; save me from all my pursuers and deliver me,2 lest like a lion they tear my soul apart, rending it in pieces, with none to deliver. 3 O Lord my God, if I have done this, if there is wrong in my hands,4 if I have repaid my friend with evil or plundered my enemy without cause,5 let the enemy pursue my soul and overtake it, and let him trample my life to the ground and lay my glory in the dust. Selah 6 Arise, O Lord, in your anger; lift yourself up against the fury of my enemies; awake for me; you have appointed a judgment.7 Let the assembly of the peoples be gathered about you; over it return on high. 8 The Lord judges the peoples; judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness and according to the integrity that is in me.9 Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end,and may you establish the righteous— you who test the minds and hearts, O righteous God!10 My shield is with God, who saves the upright in heart.11 God is a righteous judge, and a God who feels indignation every day. 12 If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword; he has bent and readied his bow;13 he has prepared for him his deadly weapons, making his arrows fiery shafts.14 Behold, the wicked man conceives evil and is pregnant with mischief and gives birth to lies.15 He makes a pit, digging it out, and falls into the hole that he has made.16 His mischief returns upon his own head, and on his own skull his violence descends. 17 I will give to the Lord the thanks due to his righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord, the Most High.
To wrap up our series on everyday habits and rhythms, we're joined by Adam Derus, Calvary's Director of Young Adults, who is here to give us a few practical ways to take a personal inventory of our relationship with technology. Adam has sought to take ownership of his time and set healthy boundaries with technology, and today he is sharing with us some of what he's learned as we seek to do the same for ourselves. We all have them, and many of us consider them essential. But have you ever considered how your smartphone is changing you or revealing the idols in your heart? Tony Reinke, senior teacher for Desiring God, has been writing about technology and the Church for more than a decade and shares his Gospel-centered insight on this episode of The Narrative podcast! Before the conversation, CCV President Aaron Baer, Policy Director David Mahan, and Communications Director Mike Andrews cover the City of Cleveland's decision to forgo drug testing prior to hiring for some positions, the shocking IVF bill from US Senators Katie Britt (R-Alabama) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas), and the 2024 Innovation Prize CCV was honored to receive from The Heritage Foundation. Over the last decade and a half, the pervasive use of smartphones has become the norm across the western world. Yet we're still unaware of the precise long-term consequences. For those brought up without smartphones (or without the internet!) we may not even be in a position to know the full extent of the most negative effects upon child development and socialisation. As politicians consider banning smartphones from schools, is there also some drastic reflection the Church needs to do too? How can Christians encourage parents to make wise choices to help their children thrive against the technological tide? If, as some authors suggest, smartphones have made children more anxious and lonely, how might Christians show them a better way? At Veritas Academy, we read books. We use chalkboards. We sit around tables with students and have in-depth discussions. We get our Grammar School students to retain information by moving and shouting to chants and songs. We write essays - with pencils and paper. And we require all high school students' phones to remain in their lockers for the duration of the school day. Veritas - like most classical Christian schools around the country - is decidedly a "low-tech" kind of school. Are we doing our children a disservice by sending them into a high-tech world woefully unprepared to use the latest technology? In this podcast, Head of School Ty Fischer begs this question to our guests - Graham Dennis, Veritas Dean of Students, and John Hayward, Veritas alumni, former Upper School Dean at Covenant Christian Academy in Harrisburg, and senior pastor at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Their discussion leads to the resounding conclusion that, no, we most certainly are not impeding our children's ability to thrive in our modern world by limiting their use of technology. In fact, the opposite holds true: we are uniquely preparing them to flourish in their careers, communities, and families by cultivating virtues and skills that many of their peers may sorely be missing. Listen in to get some thoughtful perspectives, and be inspired on the benefits of a low-tech education! 3. Peut-on se soustraire à l'I.N. ? 4. Y'a-t-il des liens entre l'I.N. et les prophéties bibliques (en particulier la marque de la bête)? Table des matières 00:47 - Introduction du sujet 43:53 - Hors-propos: J'ai une question pasteur 48:49 - Bêtisier

5 Leadership Questions Podcast on Church Leadership with Todd Adkins
In this episode of the 5 Leadership Questions podcast, Todd Adkins and Chandler Vannoy are joined by Jason Thacker who serves as the Chair of Research in Technology Ethics and is also the Director of the Research Institute at ERLC (The Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission) of the Southern Baptist Convention. They discuss how technology is shaping our walk with Christ and how we as church leaders can navigate the most difficult aspects of our digital culture including the rise of misinformation, conspiracy theories, social media, and polarization. BEST QUOTES “One of the primary disciplers of your people is actually their smartphone.” – Jason Thacker “While we think we can disconnect, we really can't in some sense. A lot of it doesn't come down to is it just bad or good because I think both of those options fail to describe what technology really is. It is a good gift from God that we can use it in good and bad ways. However, it is something that is shaping and forming us so it's not as neutral as we'd like to think that it is.” – Jason Thacker “While we want a quick fix or a checklist of 5 things that we can do to write off our relationship with technology, we need to start thinking from a biblical and ethical perspective. We need to realize that these bad habits didn't form overnight. Likewise, good habits aren't going to be formed overnight either. It's going to take time, wisdom, discernment, and intentionality.” – Jason Thacker “Technology is causing us to go faster, faster, faster. We find that everything has to be more efficient, more convenient, more and more and more. Sometimes stepping back and slowing down is what causes us to build better habits and patterns in our life that can help us see wisely and discerningly about what technology is, but also how it's forming and shaping us. Particularly, how it's forming and shaping our people.” – Jason Thacker “Technology is not merely a tool, it's actually something much larger than that that is shaping and forming us as people.” – Jason Thacker “A lot of things we see online are being shaped, formed, and curated just for us. They're personalized to us and so I think we need to recognize that every time we go online. These things may or may not be true but they're often fed or shown to us for a particular purpose and a particular reason.” – Jason Thacker “One of the ways we are conformed to this world today in our digital age is through the use of technology. What we need to do as Christians is to be seek to be transformed by the renewal of our mind by the renewal of the Holy Spirit as we seek to walk with wisdom and discernment in our digital age.” – Jason Thacker RECOMMENDED RESOURCES Following Jesus in a Digital Age by Jason Thacker The Life We're Looking For by Andy Crouch God, Technology, and the Christian Life by Tony Reinke
Who will succeed John MacArthur? Who will carry on the God-centered, biblical-grounded, expository ministry that he's built over the past half-century? John MacArthur has always had a succession plan. For decades, he's known exactly how he wants the ministry to carry on at Grace Community Church when he's gone. This episode looks at his succession plan. It also, with the help of John Piper, Sinclair Ferguson, Tony Reinke, David Gibson, and Geoffrey Chang, explores how any of us who love the church can think wisely about passing truth to the next generation.
