Clean No Longer: Joy and Annie: The Cult have prepped Joy to be Amity’s vessel. She is adorned in flowers and a brides dress. She is a clean vessel ready for the taking. Annie, Chance, Abdi and Nadia have worked out a play to blow things up once Annie and Chance have gotten Joy. But things never go as clean as the plan. Annie & Chance sneak up to property. Chance is moving slowly, liked an enthralled person, towards the house. Vera sees her and says NO and other join her. Chance is captured by the deputy. Annie cannot get through to Abdi & Nadia and so she runs to the house and gives up the plan in order to save Joy. While Pop two other cult members search the tunnels, Annie is kept outside. Abdi & Nadi blow the charge beneath the statue, right before the ceremony begins. The destruction of the statue and freeing of the bugs, breaks the enthrallment and the people begin to run. Joy stabs Augustin and leaves. Annie finds Joy and they are reunited. They get back on the road. Annie discovers a Misery book and begins to read to Joy. Annie is taken away into it ‘s world. They enter Canada and Annie sees a poster for a home health nurse. Annie and Joy have the run of the place. Joy is slowly coming around. But she will not talk about Maine, doesn’t want to change her hair color, is watching things in French and denying phone calls. Annie and the voices in her head are suspicious. She looks in Joy’s drawing book and is horrified. She suspects Joy has been implanted with Amity. She drugs her to get answers. Joy denies it and tries to run off. Annie drowns her and returns to the house in a daze. She finds a letter to her from Joy. It says that she was going away and working with a lawyer for emancipation. Distraught Annie runs to the water and revives Joy. We see a happy Joy and Annie having fun, driving, getting ice cream and more. Joy sketches a perfect likeness of the house calling it the Laughing Place. They go to a book signing for Misery’s Love. We suspected things, but here they were confirmed. We see Annies mother and father in the crowd. A man asks if Joy’s seat is taken and Annie says yes. As Paul Sheldon begins to speak we see the seat is empty. Joy died and Annie totally broke mentally. Both of them Mother & Child/Sister & Step-sister had blood on their hands and neither got out clean. King Connections: The connections to Misery are clear with three of Paul Sheldon’s books Misery’s Quest, Misery’s Paradise, and Misery’s Love. Misery’s Quest is the first book in the series. Misery’s Paradise falls towards the end and Misery’s Love was the book before Misery’s Child (that sent Annie over the edge) source data can be found here. We had it confirmed from Pop that the Castle Lake area is a Thinny. This is mentioned in many of King’s works. So our choice of book and audio book is Wizard and Glass (fyi this is what Amazon’s proposed Dark Tower series will start off being based on). Here is a link to the Book and Audiobook. Caveat Emptor – Pop vs Augustin: Caveat Emptor was a hostage situation and battle of the wills. Augustin/Ace needed the info Pop had, but he was not going to give up that easily. Pop realizes that the letters between Warden Dale Lacey & Alan Pangborn are the key. He obtained them when he bought Alan’s trailer after he died last year. He pours over the letters. Augustin and the cult got to Dale’s wive, killed her and took her over for info on the Kid. She does not have any info, but knows about the letters and that Pop, the Collector, has them. Pop heads to the hospital and finds Nadia and what happened to Chris. They are getting ready to leave when Chance arrives warning them of the Cult killing the people who didn’t respond to the noice and statue. They race to the Emporium but are stopped just short. The gun battle is not going well, when Abdi slams into the Cult’s car and kills them. The Resistance locks down the Emporium and sets up Pop’s pressure cooker bombs around the doors and windows. They discover Annie and her crew and question them. After Jamal is discovered, the Cult shows up outside. Augustin calls Pop via CB and introduces himself. He offers safe passage out for Abdi, Nadia and anyone else in return for Dale’s papers. Pop says that he burned them, which he does later. Augustin calls Pop out for hitting Ace a lot as a kid. He say he ruined all four of the kids in his care. The battle of the wills via CB continues to ramp up. Augustin says they will kill Pop and take his memories of the letters, but offers to do it easy. Pop say no on retires these days. He says he has wired up a suicide vest and will kill himself first. So Augustin sends in the Cult. Pop is buying time for the others. Abdi, Nadia, and Chris played a game as kids, They ran across the railroad tracks to escape Ace. The train is a mile long and takes a long time to get through town. The Resistance intends to do the same thing now. They fight their way though the Cult members and make it to safety. Pop makes his way back to his office, killing along they way. He injects himself with the mind altering drug on the way. When he arrives at the office Augustin is there. Pop attempts to blow himself up, but it fails. Ace kills him. King Connections:                     All the floors and layers of the Emporium reminded me a lot of Jonsey’s Memory Warehouse he is trying to get info while being pursued by the enemy. We see the resistance fleeing across the railroad tracks to escape. It reminded me of the train scene from Stand By Me/The Body. We have Annie trying to get her way with a man strapped to a bed and dishing out vengeance on him like in Misery. Pop is called the collector and his Emporium holds things that people will give anything to get to. That plus the mentions of the Mellow Tiger take me back to Needful Things. No One Wants a Dirty Annie: Annie and Joy have been taken to the Marsten house and Ace is there to greet them. The cult has switched out Annie’s medication with placebos to try and make the weaving process easier. But she is having vision of her mother. Crysilda is telling that they want to use Joy and there is only one way to keep her clean, kill her. Annie is popping pills and brewing tea to try and calm down. But one of the cult members sees Joy’s drawings and takes it to Ace/Augustin. They realize that Joy’s drawing style resembles Amity’s. Ace finds out that Joy is not on any medication and a untainted vessel. So he locks Joy up in the Attic to await the weaving. Annie’s visions of her mother are getting stronger. She sees the door to the basement open and investigates. She finds dead bodies there. Joy is missing and Annie get the info out of a cult member before killing her. She has to take out another with a sledgehammer (hello Misery shoutout). Finally she and Joy are reunited, but Crysilda is begging for Annie to get them out clean. Annie goes to choke Joy, but the memories of baby Joy snap her out of it. They sneak their way to the back door. Outside they find a crowd of enthralled citizens. They are sneaking out when spotting. The crowd begins to move and the two are separated. Annie is captured and Joy is enthralled. King Connections:                     This week did not have a lot of connections. We see Annie with the sledge hammer and she wields it just like in Misery. We also have two small shout outs to The Shining. We see a wet and decaying Crysilda speaking to Annie. This reminds me of the woman in room 217 who appears in both The Shining and Doctor Sleep. We also have Annie with the big chef’s knife ready to defend her child just like Wendy did. The Word of Amity: Amity Lambert (Mathilde Dehaye) was the daughter New Jerusalem’s head man and the lover of the pastor Pere Augustin (David Alpay. Their crops are dying and they need a word from the Lord. Amity lays all the blame at her father’s feet. When she tries to testify she goes into a seizure. She is chained up and Pere Augustin pleads for her. But her father, Marius Lambert (Thomas K. Belgrey), knows that the Pere has been sleeping with his daughter. He kicks them both out of the town. They wander towards what will be know as Castle Lake. He is taken ill and she is looking for food. Up on the cliffs, where Warden Lacy will one day drive off of and Henry Deaver disappear from, she finds a fire and a figure. This angel of light is really a demon in disguise. It is The Kid (Bill Skarsgard). Amity makes a deal with the devil and her town is flushing again. She is hailed as their prophet. She has her father and his men burned on upside down crosses. Those who will not follow her directed teachings of the angle are kicked out. Amity and Pere desecrate the church and erect a carved image of the angle. But the deal goes bad and hunger returns. Amity is desperate to get an answer for her people. The bugs we have seen all season come swarming out of the image and Amity has her answer. They dig under the church and create the catacombs. They build coffins. Each member of the town are fed one of the bugs and then their throats are slit. They will return in new bodies in 400 years. Amity gives final instructions to Pere before he kills her and then himself. King Connections: The flashback to 1619 takes place before the King story of Jerusalem’s Lot, but it still reminds us of it. It also reminds us of how the evil of the Vampire in Salem’s Lot could be attracted here. We see a lot of art on the walls of the Marsten house. One reminds me of the Dark Tower. Pop’s brother-in-law is in Shawshank for the murder of his wife. Tim Robbins played a man accused of murdering his wife and put in Shawshank in the Shawshank Redemption. We see a boy in a clown costume with a balloon in the parade, could this be a shout out to IT? A small shout out in the parade was that beautiful 1958 Plymouth Fury. It was a shout out to Christine, so it is our pick of the week. This week’s book is Christine. Here is a link to the Book, Audiobook and Movie. The Mother Rita vs Annie: Rita has moved from California to New York to escape her past and joined AA to help with her addictions. All she wants to do is find her Evangeline and be the mother she was meant to be. She makes it to the Rock and finds Chance, who stonewalls her. But Vera overhears and finds her later for the cash reward. Annie sees her and runs back in the house. Joy has been taken to a group home by Nadia and the next morning a CPS agent Bannerman talks to her through the door. He asks about her work, if she has documents on Joy and wants to come in. She lies and puts him off. She heads to the group home to talk with Joy. However the receptionist says Joy is talking with her mother. Annie watches from the outside, mirroring last episode where she watched her father’s life from the outside. Rita tells Joy the whole story. Joy is shaken to her core. However she will not allow Rita to call Annie her sister. Rita says she is not there for Annie. She wants to know what Joy wants. Joy tells her to come back later. Rita hits the bar, Annie pops her pills and writes Joy a letter and Joy cries herself to sleep. Joy has Chance break her out of the home and they are hiding in the woods around Castle Lake. Joy has called Annie and she comes with her letter. They talk things out, but Joy just cannot accept Annie due to the fact Annie was going to kill both of them after murdering their father and attempting to kill Rita. Annie says it was Joy that saved them with her laugh and that the only thing that keeps her straight is Joy. Anne leaves and Chance offers to get them to North Carolina where her step-sister will let them stay. But Joy reads Annie’s letter and has a change of heart. Rita is waiting for Annie at cabin 19. Joy has called Rita and refused to go with her. Rita confronts Annie and calls her out for snapping about the book dedication, because it made her feel small. Rita takes her into the woods at gunpoint. Annie escapes and struggles with Rita. But Rita is about to shoot Annie when Joy yells out “mom.” Both women look at her. Joy dopes Rita with the emergency knock out drug. Rita tries to fire but the gun drops and shoots her in the stomach. Joy is overwhelmed thinking she killed Rita. Annie is trying to save her, when the cops show up. Annie sees Joy and takes the blame. . King Connections: Chance a.k.a. Georgia Lachance is a shout out to Gordon Lachance in “The Body” Stand By Me. The Child and Protective Services agent that questions Annie through the door is Steve Bannerman. Sheriff George Bannerman. He appeared in The Body, Dead Zone, and Cujo. That woman, Heather, rushed up to Nadia’s car, frothing at the mouth, in a way that is reminiscent of Captain Tripps from The Stand. We the cult/witches killing people and putting them in coffins only for them to rise again. One of the ones waiting to be brought back is Amity Lambert. Mary Lambert was the director of the 1989 version for Pet Sematary. This week’s book is Pet Sematary. Annie's first Laughing Place, her Father: Annie has dyslexia, her teachers don’t understand, her peers bully her and she lashes out against them. But Her father Carl, played by John Hoogenakker who has been in Annies visions as the Tall Man, knows a way to help her learn. He will home school her and help her read by having her take his hand typed pages and type them into the computer. Annie’s mom Crysilda, played by Robin Weigert, has strong reservations and she doubts Carl’s ability.Through the years Annie grows and helps her father write his story. Early on Carl tells Annie that anywhere can be her laughing place. To her it is her dad and he is her number 1 fan. Crysilda puts her foot down when Annie is a year away from her GED. She hires Rita K. Green, played by Sarah Gadon, to tutor. Rita has the ability to gain the trust of each one of the Wilkes clan. Annie thrives and learns techniques to help her read. Rita recognizes Annie’s inteligence and plays to it. That along with an appreciation for Carl’s writing wins Carl over. As the time comes close for the GED, we see Rita is pregnant. She sees Rita as a good and the baby’s father is good or bad not complicated. Her views on morals are based on her mother. Carl has moved out of the house. They have heard Ace is dead and are going to search Castle Lake for him. Joy is resistant at first, but she decides to go. Vera, Timothy, Chance and Joy have a blast out on the lake. They have so much fun because the brownies Chance brought were Pot brownies. It is all fine until they loose an oar. Embolden from the loosened ties, Joy jumps in and get the oar. She hears a weird noice under the water, is it the schisma? At the Lodge Chance tells her to keep her phone on as she leans in for what I thought was a going to be a kiss. Annie Looses Ties To Reality: After seeing Ace, Annie suspects her meds are off and asked Nadia about it. She has searched the cabin but found no sign of the murder. She goes to the Somali site but the hole is cemented over. She heads up to the Marsten house. The place is much cleaner and some one is doing some restoration. Annie finds the door to the basement locked. Then a large Somali man, covered in goo turns to her and she freaks out. Back at cabin 19, Joy arrives to a shaken Annie. Annie tells her that she killed Ace, but he is back. Joy knows she is off and that it is an emergency. She knocks out Annie with a hypo. She then ties her up in the bedroom. She has researched and the drugs Annie has been taken are correct. She gives Annie the drugs, but she secretly spits them out for the mice to eat. Joy finds out that Ace has been seen alive. Joy refuses to release Annie. Annie talks about how everything she has done is to protect Joy. Joy’s father didn’t want her so she ran with Joy and the cops chased. She says that his is on his way to get them. Joy asks if that is her dad or Ace. Joy sees the dead mice and the pills and knows Annie has been beed full of lies. Dr. Nadia is at the door and Joy says Annie is unwell. Annie breaks a glass and uses the shard to cut the ties that bind her. Joy runs from bloody crazy Annie. Annie runs out to chase her but sees the Tall Man. Her meds don’t work quickly enough and the Tall Man says Annie will kill Joy. Read the rest of the show notes at http://CastleRockZone.com

New Jerusalem – Built on The Past: Annie awakes in the catacombs under the Somali construction site. Coffins from the 1600’s are all around her. She cannot climb her way out, but water leads her to tunnels. She follows one to a large wooden staircase. She winds her way up and through the floorboards of a basement. She is in an old house filled with squatters. As she runs from the house, we see it is the infamous Marsten house from Salem’s Lot. It seems that Abdi is trying to build a New Jerusalem over the literal bones of the old one. We have seen in both episodes this season that large bugs are spreading out from the site and they seem to follow death. The construction continues at the site, they hole to the catacombs is not visible, because Annie somehow covered it over. But one of the workers finds Annie’s necklace. Abdi think’s it is from the squatters in the Marsten so he sends Jamal to clear them out. He finds two squatters burned to a crisp. He is hit over the head with a cain and dragged down into the catacombs. It seems as if something or someone has awoken in the Lot! Annie is ready to leave and escape her trouble, but Joy is not having it. Joy storms off toward’s Chance’s and re-injures her hand. At the hospital, Joy asks to be seen alone and since she is 16 she can. Nadia questions Joy as she stitches her back up. Under the influence of anesthesia and upset at Annie, Joy searches for Ann Ingalls and herself and finds no record. She questions her mother on it, but her mother will not answer. Be part of the show! Annie's on the Run: Annie (Lizzy Caplan) has been on the run from her past, her family, the authorities, and herself, for all of Joy’s (Elise Fisher) life. But their routine is interrupted when they enter Castle Rock. Annie & Joy land at the Star Gazer Lodge under the control of Ace Merrill (Paul Sparks). Her jeep is being fixed by Ace’s brother Chris (Matthew Allen). Joy wants to make this stop longer to make this their Laughing Place, but Annie won’t hear it. She is a week off her meds and the visions are coming. She finds work at the Deuxvilles Hospital that sits on the boarder of Castle Rock and Jerusalem’s Lot. She makes her mark at the hospital by organizing everything and putting order to the chaos. This gains the notice of Dr. Nadia Howlwadaag (Yusra Warsama). Annie needs her meds but the finicky lock on the pharmacy door means only Nadia’s key will get her in. She finds Nadia’s address and breaks into her house. She gets the pass key, but Nadia’s brother Abdi (Barkhad Abdi) comes home. Annie is stuck until fate helps her out. She heads back to the hospital intent on getting all the drugs and running, but Nadia catches her. Annie makes a heartfelt confession about needing the drugs to stay a nurse and provide for Joy. Nadia has mercy on her and tells her she will get the drugs Annie needs as long as she works there. With her meds, a helpful boss, and a fixed car, Annie is a different woman. She tells Joy about being a Searcher and a Settler. They are going to settle there for a bit. But things go bad. Ace comes in and confronts Annie on being Annie Wilkes not Ann Ingalls and Joy’s snooping. Annie Snaps, knees Ace in the crotch, driving an ice cream scoop in his mouth and then down his throat. He is dead. She takes his wallet and the scoop, cleans the place and looks for a pace to get rid of the body. She ends up at Abdi’s Somali Mall construction site. As she attempts to burry him, the ground gives way to a space below. She falls in and is knocked out. Large numbers of huge bugs escape. Annie’s visions start with an audio cue of a manual typewriter. She remembers running through the woods as a younger person. She is covered in blood and caring a box. The box has Wilkes written on one side and The Ravening Angel on the other. The box has something living in it. She gets to the edge of a lake. We see her with her hands in the water. Later we see her take a baby out of the box. We assume it is Joy. She as visions of the Tall Man (John Hoogenakker) with blood running up his face. It is his voice we hear in her visions. Is it her father? Is Joy really her daughter, possibly a child of incest. Is Joy her sister that she stole from her mother, whom she then killed? Or was it a baby she stole after killing the mother? Wayne and Geoff dig into what they enjoyed about the book, Misery, as well as the movie. The discussion on Misery Book is deep, but fun. The movie was well acted, but still lacking. Rob Reiner did a fair job of adapting the book. Kathy Bates rocked Annie Wilkes it will be wild to see how Lizzy Caplan will stack up. There will be no Paul Sheldon, that we know of, in Castle Rock so James Cann has no competition. King Connections: Well this season of Castle Rock we are looking at a much younger Annie Wilkes. While this season may not play directly into the Annie we see in the book and movie, it could in some level of the Tower. So we would suggest you take a look at both Misery and Salem’s Lot. This week’s Book/Audiobook is Misery. Special Interview: To get ready for season 2 we brought in our friends Fadra Nally & Shannon Entin, from the Stinger TV & Movie Podcast. They attended the New York Comicon and got some scoop series from the Castle Rock panel and an interview with some of the cast. So we were grateful to have them on the podcast and share with us! Also be sure to check out their Facebook group here. Series Wrap - Gotham Thoughts

It is time to do a series wrap of Gotham. Now that the season is over and we have had time to reflect on the season and the series as a whole, it is time for you, our Undercover Agents to share. We discuss characters, actors, and storylines. My Series Wrap Thoughts: So here are are my series wrap thoughts. I heard about this series and it was billed as a GCPD centered series. I thought it would be an interesting change of pace and view on things. I came to the series and the podcast and was ready to talk. Season 1 was strong with the other characters. I enjoyed season 1 however, Fish Mooney drew the series down for me. The creators made a role for Jada and it just didn't work. It may have brought viewers to the show having her on it but, for me it didn't work. I also hated Barbara. They didn't know what to do with her and she was annoying. But overall, I really dug it. When asked to become the co-host for season 2, I jumped at the chance. Season 2 of Gotham saw the show flourish. We saw the introduction of Jerome and the cult of the Joker, the Galavan's and so much more. The season hit on all cylinders. It was powerful and made me love the series. Season 3 saw more villains rise and our heroes having to stand firm in the face of the great opposition. We saw the Court of The Owls and our buddy Hugo Strange. Again it was another strong season. Season 4 was flat out amazing. Joker, Professor Pyg, Ra's al ghoul, and Stabby Babs were all fighting to rule the city. Bruce had to take major steps in his journey to be come Batman. Jim was stretched to the breaking point. We had Lee standing up for the the people of the Narrows and Ed/Riddler becoming her love. It was probably my favorite season. Season 5 was, for the most, part very good. I really felt the effects from the fact that they were given an initial episode count and then had it extended. They handled it well, but it was a bit uneven. I felt like the penultimate episode was really the season finale and the last episode was a look ahead. I felt both could have been 2 hours long to cover what needed to happen. Over all, I was happy with the season but, truly wish they had kept Camren as Selina for the last episode. While the show moved more to more of an evolution of Bruce into Batman, the core of the show was always Jim Gordon. He had to be Gotham's defender until Batman could take it all on. We saw a growth of Jim through the series as he went from a new detective fighting the darkness to a commissioner ready to use all of the tools around him to defend and protect the city. Bruce's growth was huge. The weight and calling on his life grew and he thankfully learned much from Alfred and Jim. He still has a way to go to be that fully formed Batman but, he is on his way. The whole cast of characters grew and evolved. I was quite happy with how they were written and acted. I personally like Donal's portrayal of Harvey best out off all of the portrayals of the character. BD Wong's Hugo was wonderful. But the stand outs in my mind are Camren, Robin, Cory and Cameron. These actors had small roles before Gotham but, they grew so much during the series, it was amazing. They inhabited their characters and really shined. I cannot wait to see what they do next. Your Series Wrap Thoughts: You really made this podcast with all of your thoughts through the years. I really wish we could have had series wrap thoughts from all of you. But we did have a great group of folks leave us feedback. It was wonderful to hear what you had to say! Closing Thoughts: I want to say thank you to GSM's co-founder Darrell Darnell for allowing this podcast on the network and for allowing me to be a part. Thank you to Tim Arthur and Ryan Boyles for getting this podcast started in Season 1. Thanks to Karen Lindsay and John McGrail for joining me on the ride ever since. We are grateful to be small part of the Gotham family and the GSM group of shows. But most of all we thank YOU our Undercover Agents for being a part of the community for 5 seasons. You have faithfully left feedback, commented on blog posts and tweets, and been very active in our Facebook group. We are so thankful for you! Some of you have been with the podcast since season 1 episode 1 and some of you found us in season 5. Regardless we are so grateful to have your voices in the community. Podcasting is about connecting people with a shared passion and giving us an out let to share our thoughts. We are so glad we have you! Cougar's Comic Corner: To get you prepared for Batwoman, here are links to volumes 1-6 of Batwoman (New 52). They are a great read and worth your time! Batwoman Vol. 1: Hydrology Batwoman Vol. 2: To Drown the World Batwoman Vol. 3: World's Finest Batwoman Vol. 4: This Blood is Thick Batwoman Vol. 5: Webs Batwoman Vol. 6: The Unknowns News: OK Undercover Agents, now that we have the series wrap complete I have some news for you. As you know, this season of the podcast has been different because our Scarlet Cougar, Karen, has had health issues that have kept her away. Unfortunately they are preventing her from podcasting for the near future. This breaks her heart, and ours! I love podcasting with Karen and it has been rough this season without her voice. I missed her extensive knowledge, in depth analysis, and her personality.  John has been my co-pilot and a great co-host this season. However, he needs to put his full focus on Maid of Steel. So I had to think about things. I have been talking about us covering Batwoman this Fall. I spent the Spring reading the first several volumes of the New 52 introduction of Batwoman. The storylines are powerful and she has some great villains. I think story-wise they will have great material to work with and awesome characters. I fully intend on watching the series to see what they do. I am a bit concerned about if the CW will push the politics and agendas that, to me, draw Supergirl down. I'm afraid it will be even more heavy pushed. That gives me pause. When I podcast on things, I want to be able to come to it with passion and positivity. I just don't know if I can do that for Batwoman. All that to say, Karen and I will not be covering Batwoman on Gotham Undercover. At this point, it is unclear if other hosts on the network will pick it up and cover the show. But stay tuned to the Facebook group. We will offer you a place to discuss Gotham, Batwoman and all things Batman related there. If someone decides to cover Batwoman on GSM you will hear it there first. I will be podcasting with my buddy Wayne on season 2 of Castle Rock on our Castle Rocks Zone here on GSM. Sound Off: What were your series wrap thought? We would love to know! The Beginning saw us jump 10 years into Gotham's future. Jim is ready to quit, but no one has stepped up to take his place. But Bruce has put on the cowl and cape. Batman is ready to defend his city with the help of his friends. The Beginning of Penguin and Riddler: [caption id="attachment_36870" align="aligncenter" width="495"] ©2019 Fox Media LLC Cr: FOX[/caption] Penguin has been in Blackgate and Riddler in Arkham for 10 years. It turns out 6 months after reunification Jim busted them and they were put away. Riddler is broken out of Arkham and given a mission, by who he thinks is the Penguin. He is to kidnap Mayor James and blow then new Wayne Tower when Bruce shows up. Meanwhile Penguin is released and is looking dapper. He has one thing in mind, revenge on Jim. Penguin kidnaps Jim and has him drive to the docks. Penguin takes him to the exact spot where Jim was told to shoot him, but didn't. Oswald wants revenge and is going to go through with it. Jim tries to reason with him and in the process finds out he is not behind Ed's escape and the theft of explosives, but it won't work. Jim jumps off the dock and swims to safety. Riddler has Mayor James at the galla, but an observant Selina spots him and works with Babs to distract him. They knock him out and free the Mayor at the same moment Jim and the GCPD arrive. They find that the Gotham display model is rigged with explosives. Riddler escapes and meets up with Penguin, but their car is attacked by Batman and they are put in custody. They manage to escape and vow to start their plans to control the city. But seeing Batman on the rooftops they decide to wait until tomorrow. The Beginning of The Joker: [caption id="attachment_36879" align="aligncenter" width="800"] ©2019 Fox Media LLC Cr: FOX[/caption] Jeremiah has been in Arkham, but he was playing possum for some of that time. He had Ecco working behind the scenes for him. She comes into Arkham as a nurse and fills him in on the events not going to plan. It is time for him to take things into his own hands. He and Ecco head to the Sirens Club to get at Barbara. He knows all about her success, but he can use her. Ecco has her captive, but Barbara Lee (played wonderfully by Jeté Laurence) is a fighter just like her parents. She attack Jeremiah, but is no match for him. That distraction is enough for her mom to take out Ecco. Ecco is bleeding out. Jeremiah says she is his Ecco no more and kills her. He takes Barbara Lee and gives a wounded Barbara a message for Jim. Jim and backup arrive an Babs tells Jim to go where it started for Jeremiah. Jim promises to save Barbara Lee and heads to Ace Chemicals. There he finds Barbara Lee suspended over one of the chemical vats. Says he is in process, not Jeremiah but he cannot decide what to be called yet. He lets go of the rope and Jim dives to catch it. Jeremiah/Joker begins to stab him, but out of the shadows batarangs knock him away. A shadowy figure scares him off. Once again Jim is saved by Batman. The Beginning of The Bat Family: [caption id="attachment_36878" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] ©2019 Fox Media LLC Cr: FOX[/caption] Bruce left Gotham and learned the ways of the world. While he was gone Jim, Alfred, Barbara and our heroes had to step up to rebuild the city. Jim is ready to step down once Wayne Tower is open and Lee stands behind him. She says maybe if he steps down someone will step up. Jim and Harper investigate a gang location and find cartons of government explosives, but they are empty. The gang members are all dead. They are distracted by a shadow and they follow it. The shadowy figure says he is not his enemy but a friend. The figure says not to touch the bodies and then escapes out a window. Harper sees the bodies are all wired to explode. Batman has saved them. Selina (the 10 years later version played by Lili Simmons) has become somewhat of a socialite, but she is still having fun being a thief. She steals a big diamond and is interrupted by Batman. She goes to the Wayne Gala ad meets Alfred. From their interaction, it seems like they have seen each other over the 10 years, but it has been a while. She asks if Bruce is there. Alfred says he is late. She called out Bruce for leaving when the town and they needed them the most. Alfred agrees. She says she wants Bruce to stop following her and asks Alfred to do relay it. However Alfred calls her out saying she is dressed to the 9's and it seems like she needs to talk to him. At the end of the episode, she is in her full Catwoman gear and he is behind her. She begs him to speak. They have a heart to heart. Things are not resolved, but they know where each other stand. It nicely sets up the Bat Cat relationship that we see play out for years to come. Closing Thoughts: While I enjoyed this episode, I felt it was rushed a bit. I feel it would have been better served as a two hour finale so that each of our characters could have been fleshed out in the 10 years later. I feel "They Did What" served as a better finale for the series. This episode felt like some what of an appendix to the series. I did enjoy it and loved seeing Barbara's success, when we all predicted her death. I loved Barbara Lee and her dynamic with Jim. It was fun to see the very talented Cameron Monaghan play a third character that was not quite The Joker, but oh so close. It was a fun ride. We will get into some of this with our series wrap up ep (that we want your feedback for), but I wanted to share a few thoughts here. Wow it has be 5 seasons and we have seen all of heroes grow as well as the villains. When the series started it was touted as a series that centered around the GCPD and Jim Gordon. It did, and Jim had to fill the shoes of Batman who had not yet risen. The series did a masterful job of showing Jim's growth and his need for Batman. Many props to Ben McKenzie for stepping up and growing into the roll. Donal Logue is a great actor and he took a character that was rich and made him lovable and strong. I will think of Donal's portrayal from now on when I think of Harvey. David has grown so much in his acting as well as stature. He owes much to and I hope he appreciates the master class in acting he got from Sean Pertwee. I though Lili did a good job of playing an older version of Camren. But Camren deserves much praise for taking a reflection of Selina and making it real. I could go on and on about each member of the cast, writers and creative team. We were very fortunate to have them bring us a great tale over these 5 seasons. I want to say thank you to GSM's co-founder Darrell Darnell for allowing this podcast on the network and for allowing me to be a part. Thank you to Tim Arthur and Ryan Boyles for getting this podcast started in Season 1. Thanks to Karen Lindsay and John McGrail for joining me on the ride ever since. News: TV Line has a great article summarizing the finale with a Q&A by show runner & writer of the finale John Stephens. You can find it here. Pennyworth: on Epix starts the end of July. The story of Alfred Pennyworth, a former special-forces officer living in London and working for Bruce Wayne's father. The description is as follows: Metropolis will follow Lois Lane and Lex Luthor as they investigate the world of fringe science and expose the city's dark and bizarre secrets. Airing exclusively on DC's upcoming digital service, it promises to show us a wondrous and awe-inspiring City of Tomorrow, before the emergence of Superman, and establish much of the Man of Steel's world leading up to his arrival. What Nyssa Has Planned: [caption id="attachment_36534" align="aligncenter" width="795"] ©2019 Fox Media LLC Cr: FOX[/caption] Nyssa wants to see her father's vision come to pass. Nothing will stand in her way. She has Babs and the baby at City Hall. General Wade reports that the full army force has landed. On her command they are ordered to destroy the green zone and the people of Gotham. The commander balks at that but is quickly killed by Bane. Nyssa gives Barbara the same speech she gave Bruce about watching Gotham burn and then allowing her to die. What really got to Babs was her child being raised and an al Ghul. Bane and the army arrive at the wall where a united front of the GCPD, Bruce, Riddler and Penguin. They fight is going OK until Bane pulls out a bazooka and blasts a hole in the wall. Our force falls back to the GCPD and Bruce has a plan. Lucius radios that the General's signal is coming from City Hall. Selina confirms that Nyssa has Barbara there too. So Jim orders the GCPD and the refugees to the tunnels. Jim takes out some of the guards, but Nyssa has him surrounded and she has the baby. Jim and Barbara lay down their weapons. Nyssa challenges Jim to unarmed combat. All that League training puts Jim at a great disadvantage. He manages to cuff Nyssa and get the knife to Babs. Together they take out the guards and stabby Babs stabs Nyssa with the same knife that killed her father. Nyssa orders General Wade to kill himself so the commands cannot be revoked and she escapes. She found out about Riddler & Penguin's sub and uses it to get off the island. Back at the GCPD, Lee check out the baby and she is fine. Jim orders Lee, Babs and the rest to use the tunnels to get to the subway system and escape. He and the other officers will hold Bane and the army off. What Will It Take To Stop Bane?: [caption id="attachment_36532" align="aligncenter" width="795"] ©2019 Fox Media LLC Cr: FOX[/caption] Bane is ready to bring Gotham down. After the wall is breached, Bruce knows what to do. He is going to take the Jeremiah's power generator and use it like a bomb to bring down buildings to slow the army's progress. He and Selina volunteer since Lucius and Lee are needed at the GCPD. At the Wayne Enterprises building, Bruce reflects back on his good times there with Alfred waiting on his parents. They sacrificed so much to save the city and he is willing to do the same. They set the bomb and run. The tower comes down and blocks the army, for a short while. On their way back to the GCPD, they encounter Bane. Five years of training and work still have not prepared them for this. Bane says friends and family are a liability in war. He looks forward to watching Bruce as he kills Selina. Selina stabs Bane and Bruce attacks. He has gotten tech from Lucius. One piece is the Nightwing project. It is stealth tech that hides planes from radar, but it attacks bats. Bruce plants it on Banes back and the bats attack. Later, Jim, Harvey, Riddler, Penguin, Bruce, Selina and the GCPD stand up to Bane and the army. Things are not looking good, but Lee, Babs and all the refugees come out to stand with them. Bane orders them shot but the army does not comply. Jim says they can stand with Bane or join them. The draw on Bane and his men and the battle is won. Jim finally gets to enjoy holding his girl. Babs says her name is Barbara Lee Gordon, so she knows who she can trust in Gotham. The new mayor makes Jim commissioner. Bruce tells him he is leaving Gotham. He wants to be out of the public eye and to keep forces who oppose him away. He can't tell Selina in person so he gives her a note. At the airport, Alfred says he will start rebuilding Wayne Manor and Enterprises tomorrow. In a touching speech he says he never tried to replace Bruce's parents. But Bruce is the only son he will have, and he is proud of him. Bruce boards the plane and flies off. Selina makes it to the airport in enough time to see him fly off. What the Future Holds: [caption id="attachment_36535" align="aligncenter" width="795"] ©2019 Fox Media LLC Cr: FOX[/caption] Penguin and Riddler are ready to leave Gotham. But Penguin just cannot do it. He cannot leave the town that made him. Riddler pleads with him, but he won't give in. At the GCPD, Penguin says that Gotham is a part of him and he cannot stand by and see it leveled and remade. The Riddler comes in to lend his support. This is just in time because Bane is on the way. We see the bookend of the beginning of the season with the forces banding together to defend the city. During the battle, Penguin shields Riddler from a grenade. His eye is damaged, but he is OK. They battle with the GCPD and help save the city. After it is all over they are bitter. They get no thanks or respect for the roles they played in saving the city. Ed says that he only saved to city so he could rule it. Oswald jumps in and agrees. They will stand together as brothers to rule the city. They embrace in a hug. Both have knives to the other's back, but neither stab. A new work begins for them. Closing Thoughts: They Did What? took us back to the first shot we saw in the season premier. The No Man's Land situation was brought on by Jeremiah and Ra's al Ghul seeking to control Bruce. The resolution could not be stoped by just Bruce or even Jim. It took the entire city banding together and standing up to break through. I loved the episode because each of the people we have grown to love stood up and helped fight for the city. Each had their own reasons, but they worked together to save the flawed and gritty city they love. This could have easily have been the series finale. It closed story lines and celebrated the characters we know and love. But it will be fun to jump 10 year in the future and see what Gotham is like at the start of Batman's career. News: The Beginning... The series flash-forwards 10 years into the future, as Bruce is set to return to Gotham for the opening of the new Wayne Tower. A series of crimes leads Gordon to believe Penguin and The Riddler are up to their old tricks. However, when Bullock is framed for a murder, Gordon begins to piece together an even more sinister plot targeting the city, and a new figure emerges from the shadows to be the hero Gotham desperately needs in the all-new “The Beginning…” series finale episode of GOTHAM airing Thursday, April 25 (8:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Year Zero had us jump 13 months after the events of last season, but we were pulled back to 3 months. Gotham is desperate. Food and supplies are short. Villains control sectors of the city and only the GCPD & allies stand against them. Our heroes need help. Year Zero - Zero help for the GCPD: ©2018 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Giovanni Rufino / FOX Jim and the GCPD have established Haven, a 10 block area around the station. They are feeding the refugees who could not get out of Gotham when the bridges were blown. But times are tough and supplies are running out. The city has been divided up between the people can wield power. Jim goes up nightly to turn on the signal. Bruce asks if he does it to remind people even in darkness there is light. Jim says yes and to remind himself. Jim has been communicating, via shortwave, with the government outside the city. But they will not send aid, rescue the children, or restock the GCPD's ammo supply. After Scarecrow's raid thinks are dire. Bruce illegally calls in a supply chopper from the mainland. Harvey exclaims "Man, it's nice to have a billionaire around!" Hopes are raised as the chopper comes into town and Bruce sends them to the landing spot, but a RPG cripples it. It goes down in Lo Boyz turf and the GCPD must go get it. The day has been saved for now. But supplies will run low again and the government won't let another Wayne re-supply happen again. Harvey questions why Jim didn't kill Penguin and save them some trouble. He says times have changed and it is kill or be killed. Jeremiah's equivalent of Harley Quinn has slipped into the station (probably not for the firs time) and looks at Jim's turf map. She leaves a cult of Joker graffiti on it. She slips into the background as Jim gets a shortwave call. A voice says they have supporters across the river and they will help, but they don't say who they are. A young boy has made his way across the city and multiple sectors to get to Jim. He says his brothers and sisters are being killed. Jim gathers his officers and gives a stirring speech. “We’re supposed to be giving these people hope. Hope that if they’re in danger, someone will come. We will come. Suit up." Year Zero - Villains At Odds: ©2018 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Giovanni Rufino / FOX Penguin has the turf around city hall but has also converted a factory to make bullets. Barbara & Tabitha have a safe zone for women around the Sirens Club and men can buy time there. They have no lack of food and booze. Scarecrow and his forces control the west, spreading fear. Mister Freeze and Firefly have the north but are fighting over it. The Lo Boyz gang are also a presence. But no one has heard from Jeremiah in 3 months. Gotham's no man's land status is hurting everyone. Penguin wants meat and is willing to trade ammo for steak from the Sirens. Tabs is still out to kill Penguin, but Babs reigns her back in saying this trade will help the women survive. Penguin gets his steak, but he is not doing it for the people in his factory. Factory workers are passing out and the quality is suffering. Mr. Penn tries to convince him to give more rations, but Oswald will not have it. Even feeding his overcooked steak to his dog. The Riddler is back alive, but not all is well. He keeps waking up after blackouts. He finds himself in locations radiating out from his home. He cannot figure out why. He knows it is Ed doing it, but he cannot get Ed to come out and confront him. Scarecrow and his forces get inside the Haven district and divide up. Half the forces head to the GCPD and the rest go to the hospital. They take out the power at both locations. They then begin to raid the supplies. Jim fights Scarecrow and runs him off. Harvey runs the rest off, but not before they take 3 weeks of food. At the hospital, Bruce grabs his new night vision goggles, thanks to Lucius Fox, and heads to the basement. He is in Batman mode and takes out the thugs one by one. All is good until the lights come back on and temporality blind him and they get away. The chopper has crashed landed in a warehouse and the Lo Boyz are unloading it. Penguin rolls in with his crew. They have guns and unlimited ammo and they easily take out the Boyz. But before they can load up, the GCPD have made it to the warehouse. Things are not going well for the GCPD when they get a helping hand. Tabitha takes out 2 of Penguin's goons with a crossbow and one with a knife. She then has Penguin. She is there to kill him and does not care if she lives. She is there to avenge Butch. She aims her gun and fires, but the bullet she has was from Penguin's supply and it misfires. Penguin pulls his boot knife and kills her. As she dies, Babs comes in screaming. Tabs says "Barbara don't" but it is too late. Babs empties her clip into Penguin's men. The GCPD fire too and exhaust their ammo. Luckily Bruce followed them and takes out the thugs guarding the ammo truck. He restocks the GCPD. Jim tries to negotiate with Penguin. They'll split the supplies 50/50 and Barbara goes free. Penguin says no I'll take it all and leave you to think about it, since you have no ammo. Jim then shoots Penguin in his bad leg and the GCPD take out the rest. Year Zero - Zero Hope For Selina & Bruce?: ©2018 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Giovanni Rufino / FOX Selina and Alfred never made it out of Gotham, they were caught in traffic when the bridges blew. She is stable at the hospital but if the doctor does not operate her spine will collapse. She agrees and Bruce says he will be there the whole time. A sketchy nurse tells Bruce that the doctors can't do anything for Selina. She needs the Witch. The surgery, even though it is interrupted by the Scarecrow crew, is a success. Selina is in pain. She is despondent because she knows she will never walk again. She sees a scalpel on an unguarded cart and goes for it, trying to kill herself. She is stopped by the doctor, nurse and Bruce. The sketchy nurse pokes her head in and says Selina needs the Witch. Bruce is desperate and asks where he can find the Witch. Will Year Zero for Bruce & Selina see the Bat & Cat as a team in Gotham or will it drive them to be enemies? Closing Thoughts: Wow we got our final season, even though it is a short one. But they are starting it out with a bang! Year Zero was an interesting way to start the season. Jumping back and forth in time leaves us with questions. Will we continue jumping back and forth in time or will the jumps just be forward from now on? Who is the Witch? My bet is on Poison Ivy, but it could be Lee. Where is Lee? We know Riddler was brought back by Hugo Strange, so Lee must be around too. Who brought down the chopper with the RPG? They had to have info from the GCPD or Bruce to know about it, how?  My bet is Jeremiah and his crew. So many questions! But I loved the start to this season. I hope every episode is as tightly written this season. Year Zero in the comics is retelling of origin stories. Gotham has been an Elseworlds version of the Batman story. This season is our version of Year Zero and titled Legend of The Dark Knight. Who knows how wild this short season will be! News: First up is the info about next week via Fox:    Trespassers - Gordon and Bullock investigate a location where several kids have been kidnapped. Barbara proves to be an unlikely ally to Gordon. Meanwhile, Bruce looks into an alleged witch with healing powers for Selina, and Nygma deals with demons of his own in the all-new “Trespassers” episode of GOTHAM airing Thursday, Jan. 10 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (GTH-502) (TV-14 L, V) Here is the promo: Next up is Batwoman news via TVLine: Good news for the 60 percent of you who voted in favor of a Batwoman series: The CW has officially handed a pilot order to the project, which stars Orange Is the New Black‘s Ruby Rose in the title role. Elseworlds was this year's CW crossover. But this year we saw a new character introduced, Batwoman.  Flash, Green Arrow and Supergirl make their way to Gotham City investigating John Deegan. Batwoman is not happy to have them in her city. Due to the epic nature of the crossover, the GSM shows did a mega podcast roundtable. Elseworlds: At the end of night one of the crossover, we found out that Dr. John Deegan was given the book by the Monitor and was in Gotham City. After detouring though Star City, Ollie-Flash, Barry-Arrow and Supergirl head over to Gotham. They run into some muggers and are taken into custody by the GCPD. They are sprung and taken to Wayne Tower. There they are greeted by Kate Kane. She has taken over the tower and offers to let them use it. They learn from her that Deegan is over Arkham and head over there for answers. Cisco, Kaitlin, and Diggle show up filling them in on the appearance of Earth 90's Flash and the message. Kara & Kaitlin distract the staff. Barry & Oliver confront Deegan, who frees the inmates and escapes. In a battle with an inmate Scarecrow's fear toxin is spilt and Arrow & Flash battle each other thinking they are battling Merlin & Thawne. Batwoman comes to save the day. In Arkham we had shout outs to Mister Freeze, Scarecrow, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Clayface, Riddler, Psycho-Pirate and the Luke Fox a.k.a. Batwing. Elseworlds - Batwoman Saves The Day: Elseworlds saw the formal introduction of Batwoman and the city of Gotham into the CW Flarrowverse. It seems that Bruce/Batman left Gotham 3 years ago and it fell to pieces. Wayne Enterprises fell and so did the city. They seem to be canonizing that this is the Nolan Batman's Gotham. But Bruce's cousin Kate Kane is on the job as Batwoman. It seems even she doesn't know where Batman went. But she is there to protect her city. All the drama that our heroes are bringing is making things worse. She just wants them out of the city. However she and Supergirl are World's Finest in her eyes. They both know each other's secret identities. Our heroes may have left Gotham, but we have not seen the last of Batwoman. Summary: Elseworlds was a fun crossover that checked so many boxes for the fans. Part 1 gave us Smallville shout outs and a battle with Amazo (seen in many of the animated series). Part 2 gave us the canonization of 90's Flash, a Green Lantern Diggle, and Batwoman. Part 3 was an alt-Superman vs Superman battle with Arrow making a bargain with the Monitor. We all felt part 3 was the weakest and Supergirl's show got hijacked. But the setup for next year's Crisis on Infinite Earths has us pumped.  It was also a blast to do a crossover podcast with Arrow Squad, Central City Underground and Maid of Steel. With 7 podcasters and a ton of listener feedback it was a fun, but late night. We hope you enjoy the podcast! Cougar's Comic Corner: Karen and several of us talked about characters and plot points in Elseworlds that are teeing us off for Crisis. It is a good time to pick up this volume and get a sneak peak of what we may be in store for next fall. Crisis On Infinite Earths: 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition In a defining event in comics history, the heroes from different Earths band together as their worlds are erased one by one. To stop the destruction of all existence, it’s going to take the combined powers of two Supermen, the Flash, a new Superboy, Supergirl, Alexander Luthor and countless more to fight the madness. And not all will survive. Buy the hardcopy from Amazon or the digital from Comixology.                 Cougar's ALTERNATE Comic Corner:   If you're not squeamish and want to read the twisted story of John Dee as written by Neil Gaiman, here's more info.       The Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes & Nocturnes   In PRELUDES & NOCTURNES, an occultist attempting to capture Death to bargain for eternal life traps her younger brother Dream instead.
