Why do certain stories break us open in ways we cannot fully explain? Why does the sacrifice of a fictional lion make a grown adult cry? Why does a humble gardener carrying his friend through darkness produce that catch in the throat that feels like something more than sentiment? Why does a wrongly imprisoned man emerging into the rain with his arms outstretched feel less like a plot point and more like a moment of genuine liberation? In this episode Tanya explores one of the most beautiful ideas in all of Christian thought — the concept C.S. Lewis called Sehnsucht — the inconsolable longing that no earthly experience can satisfy. Drawing from Ecclesiastes 3:11, Lewis's works including The Weight of Glory and Mere Christianity, and Tolkien's argument that the gospel is the myth that is also true, Tanya makes the case that the stories that move us most are not accidental. The 755th episode of Have You Ever Seen is a doubleheader of oldies with very little in common. First, it's Jules Dassin's tough and uncompromising prison-break drama, Brute Force. It was brutally violent for 1947 audiences, as Burt Lancaster, Charles Bickford and friends team up to bust out...partly to escape Hume Cronyn's vicious captain of the guards. It's one of the great jailbird flicks, even if it's been surpassed by the likes of Cool Hand Luke and Shawshank in the 8 decades since. Then I touched on Michael Cimino's infamous Heaven's Gate...although that review is more of a defence of a movie that took a lot of heat for ending the "Director's Era" of the 1970s. Hey, Cimino made a good-looking western with a terrific cast (Kristofferson, Walken, Hurt, Bridges, Huppert)...and now the movies made by the "he ended the party" scapegoat is viewed much more favourably. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay realize hope is a dangerous thing while sitting down to watch the highest rated movie on IMDb, 'The Shawshank Redemption.' Bombay starts off the episode by remembering an insane Valentine's Weekend bender that ended with watching this movie, and promptly realizing that was the wrong call. Then the guys discuss whether this is the most overrated movie of all-time. After a ridiculous run on cable that saw 'Shawshank' play practically around the clock for 12 years it may just be the most watched movie of all-time. There's a toothlessness to the prison portrayed, which has the boys sharing stories about the bids their dad did behind bars. Ultimately, Bombay and Andy decide while the movie is severely overrated there's still enough good qualities to have you tuning in for more, the foremost being Morgan Freeman incredible voiceover work. The episode ends with them breaking down the impossibility of Andy Dufresne's escape, and wondering if he and Red got down carnally when they reconnected in Mexico.
Since I contain multitudes, have run out of ideas, and since I aspire the podcast to embody Paul Krassner's iconic satirical magazine The Realist's motto of "Irreverrance is our only sacred cow", I am debuting the first in a series of occasional episodes where I revisit those films so firmly ensconced in our collective filmgoing conscience that we can be forgiven for forgetting if they're actually, you know...any good. So let's start with one of the odder films to achieve cinematic immortality: Frank Darabont's adaptation of a Stephen King short story (not that you'd know that from the films marketing materials) 'The Shawshank Redemption". This film has so entrenched itself that one forgets that it was a bomb upon release, that audiences didn't know what to make of the title nor the trailer, that it was unloved by the Academy despite 7 nominations, and that six months after its release you'd be forgiven for thinking that it would disappear forever as a weird but understandable failed experiment. Except. The film became one of the most-rented video store films of all time, in the time of video stores. And when cable TV really took off in the 90's, there again was The Shawshank Redemption, appearing nightly somewhere. Steven Speilberg called it his "Chewing gum movie" meaning that when you encounter it (step in it), you can't get rid of it and you end up watching the entire thing. Others have posited it as the primary example of a Relationship Movie For Me. Master & Commander being the other one. Does Shawshank exist to allow men to cry? Or just to indulge their fear/fascination with prison rape? Or both? There's plenty of evidence to support all theories, so let's all get locked up with Shawshank, Andy, Red and the fellas and see whether this enduring, schmaltzy, effective weeper deserves a filmic pardon. One of the most passionately beloved movies of the 1990s, and indeed all of film history, it is peculiar that while you will meet people who haven't seen this film, you will never meet people who don't like it and gleefully tell you so. The fact that when Shawshank first emerged it was largely ignored or made fun of for having a convoluted name, and lost almost every award it was nominated for to Forrest Gump (coming next week) is remarkable in retrospect. It really only hit and became abidingly popular when it reached television screens.
