A father of two, Renna resides in Los Angeles, where he can often be found at his local course shooting a very average round of bogey golf, playing pick-up basketball at the YMCA, producing in the commercial and content space for his production company Brookline or being the founder of his apparel line Hambino.Patrick was born in Boston, and though he moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting at a young age, his accent still comes through when he gets excited. In their cheeky social satire COUP! Co-directors Austin Stark & Joseph Schuman drop us into an isolated seaside estate during the 1918 Spanish Flu. The estate belongs to a wealthy couple, an entitled journalist, Jay (Billy Magnussen) and his socialite wife, Julie (Sarah Gadon). The couple hires a mysterious grifter as a their private cook, Floyd (Peter Sarsgaard). When the plague finally descends on the island, the wily cook rouses his fellow staff to rebel and take over the mansion. Their wealthy employer suspects the cook's coup is part of a more sinister agenda, and mind games between master and servant escalate into boisterous class warfare. With a terrific cast, stars Peter Sarsgaard (currently on Apple+ hit series Presumed Innocent), Billy Magnussen (Road House remake), and Sarah Gadon, the film also stars Skye P. Marshall, Faran Tahir, Kristine Nielsen and Fisher Stevens. Co-directors and co-writers Austin Stark and Joseph Schuman joins us to talk about the tonal challenge of presenting this satirical tale that leans into the comedy of menace while embracing the themes of the class divide and revolution, as well as bringing Peter Sarsgaard into the project to play Floyd and to be the film's Executive Producer. We find Haplin in the midst of a peaceful period of time, until a series of unsolved kidnappings continues. We open the series with Georgia (played by Sarah Gadon) walking home at night and hearing and nearly witnessing a murder. This man was revealed to be a member of their little town who was suspected long ago to be the “Magic Man”. someone whom the town suspects is behind all these kidnappings, with “an ability to make people disappear that bordered on the mystical.” The townsfolk are disturbed by Jerry Friddle's murder, which revives the memories of the Magic Man. Deputy Tommy Conroy (played by Geoff Stults) is tasked with solving Jerry's murder, and ends up on the hunt for the Magic Man. Tommy's wife Rachel Conroy (played by Amy Acker) is taken by the Magic Man, which is confirmed by the presence of dead flowers on the door step of the victim's family. Rachel is returned to Tommy and the town safe after Tommy and Merritt Greives (played by Sam Neill) start digging into the Magic Man's past and past victims. Town secrets are rushed to be protected as it seems many of influence in the town seem to know more about the Magic Man and the disappearances than has been made official in public records. Pink never thought her success would last this long. In this conversation, Pink tells Tom about the highs and lows of her music career, what it took to survive the industry and what inspired her new album, “Trustfall.” Plus, the actor Sarah Gadon (True Detective, A Dangerous Method, Enemy) gravitates toward challenging characters — and her latest role is no exception. Sarah opens up to Tom (22:08) about making her onstage debut in “Yerma,” about a woman's struggle with infertility, and why she says the character she plays is the “ultimate heroine.”

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are reliving our film school days with the twisting, turning 2020 film from Lawrence Michael Levine, Black Bear.I can just about guarantee that this film is not what you think it is. It certainly threw us for a loop when we got into it. We had one of those fabled shared watching experiences with Black Bear. We thought we knew what we were getting into, but man, could we not have been more mistaken. The first half of it is about what you'd expect and then BAM! Things get crazy. There's a power in flipping the expectations of a film viewer. Lulling a watcher into a sense of relative comfort (not to suggest that any of this film is comfortable) and then subverting that feeling can help make for a memorable work.It certainly doesn't hurt anything when you've got the great Aubrey Plaza and Sarah Gadon doing some phenomenal work. Aside from the clever story, their powerful performances are what makes this film work as well as it does.(Recorded on May 12, 2022)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:Black Bear - IMDbBlack Bear trailer - YouTubeLawrence Michael Levine - IMDbAubrey Plaza - IMDbChristopher Abbott - IMDbSarah Gadon - IMDbPaola Lázaro - IMDbGrantham Coleman - IMDbJennifer Kim - IMDbParks and Recreation (TV Series 2009–2015) - IMDbStanley Kubrick - IMDbShelley Duvall - IMDbHow The Shining Changed Shelley Duvall Forever - SlashFilmJohn Wick (2014) - IMDbKeanu Reeves - IMDbHalle Berry - IMDbPredestination (2014) - IMDbFollow Us:Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts! Our Instagram profile! Our Twitter profile!

Grief and depression can be a tricky thing....On this episode we dive into a movie that tackles some pretty complicated subjects.  On VOD platforms now it's 'All My Puny Sorrows'Based on the international best-selling novel by Miriam Toews, All My Puny Sorrows is the poignant story of two sisters-one a concert pianist obsessed with ending her life, the other, a writer, who in wrestling with this decision, makes profound discoveries about her herself.Full disclosure we were a TINY bit late bringing this one out of the box, but we had a real interesting talk with director Michael McGowan who has never been afraid to let the material he works on to go to some pretty heavy places.  We talk about what made him want to adapt this novel for the big screen and so very much more...
