On this episode, Erin & Elizabeth talk to animal intuitive Phoebe Hoffman, one of the stars of the new documentary about NYC psychics, Look Into My Eyes (currently on Max). The film hints at Phoebe's colorful life growing up with her divorced father Stanley, who Phoebe lived with in a studio apartment in Manhattan throughout her teenage years, when she dropped out of LaGuardia High School of Music and Art in 9th grade. Stanley, an English teacher who nonetheless played fast and loose with the concept of mentoring, was compared to Philip Roth in 1974 when his debut novel was published, but his literary dreams ended with a gig writing forScrew magazine. As Phoebe chain-smoked the Marlboros her dad procured for her, she skipped school to watch John Waters movies on repeat, all while longing for boundaries, apologies, and parenting. A botched stint in therapy with Stanley led to Phoebe finding a way to lovingly detach from her dad, and led to an unlikely new purpose in life: pet psychic. Phoebe tells us about an otherworldly experience with a horse changed everything, what's up with animals as the conduits of our dead loved ones, and whether our pets love us as much as we love them.

Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #593 is an hour of visionary acoustic improvised music presented by The Gaea Star Band featuring Mariam Massaro on vocals, Native flute, acoustic guitar, dulcimer, Celtic harp and ukulele, Bob Sherwood on piano and Craig Harris on Native drum and congas. Recorded live in early October of 2024 at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts, today's show begins with a lively, energized rendition of Mariam's “Thistle In The Wind” from her “For The Children” LP. The Gaea Star Band supports Mariam's retelling of the story of “Painty The Turtle”, another song from the children's record. “Oh The Rain” is an altogether more grown up effort, a rich, psychedelic cloud of rainy imagery featuring Craig's heartbeat Native drum and a fine, soaring vocal from Mariam. “Constant Flow” is a funky, Ray Charles influenced workout with fine rain poetry from Mariam and hip, bluesy piano from Bob that settles into an inspiring Native flute feature and “Wind Over The Water” is a delicate Celtic harp fantasy from Mariam supported by Craig's fundamental drums and Bob's alternately modern, angular piano passages alternating with deeply European-influenced sections to support Mariam's gorgeous Native flute work. “Look Into My Eyes” is a sprightly, modal workout led by Mariam's chiming dulcimer and fine vocal and “Back Us Up Oh Angels” is an energized reading of Mariam's gospel rocker from the “Gaea Star Crystal” LP. Also from “Gaea Star Crystal” is the operatic, Verdian “Sing Down The Walls” and we complete today's show with the deeply dynamic “Oh Just Let It Be” featuring another fine vocal from Mariam and imaginative, developing piano from Bob. 'Look Into My Eyes' takes a non-judgemental approach to watching New York psychics at work. Filmmaker Lana Wilson ('Miss Americana') captures a vibe of city dwellers in isolation looking for connections.
A new film provides a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of New York City psychics. Director Lana Wilson joins us to discuss her documentary, "Look Into My Eyes" which releases in theaters Friday, September 6.
In Part 4 of the July – September 2024 installment of UNFOLDING THE CALENDAR, Film Forum Director Sonya Chung sat down at the theater with Lana Wilson, the brilliant director of the new documentary LOOK INTO MY EYES, a revelatory portrait of psychics in New York City and the people who come to them seeking connection – on this plane or another one. The film opens Friday, September 6 from A24. Lana has a long history with Film Forum. After working in our administrative office for several years early in her career, her bold, moving debut feature AFTER TILLER, about four of the US's most courageous and controversial abortion providers, opened with us in 2013. Since then, she has established herself as one of the most exciting and empathetic documentarians working today with the Spirit Award-nominated feature THE DEPARTURE, the IDA-nominated short-form series A CURE FOR FEAR, and two intimate profiles of iconic women: the Taylor Swift portrait MISS AMERICANA and the multiple Emmy-nominated PRETTY BABY: BROOKE SHIELDS. We are thrilled to welcome Lana back to Film Forum. Please enjoy their conversation.

If you aren't able to use eye contact, people will find you untrustworthy. The optimal eye contact period is around three seconds of eye contact at a time, with sufficient rest between gazes.• Active listening is a valuable skill set that any person should master, but the techniques of active listening can also help you improve your elicitation abilities and gather more information about people. You need to comprehend, retain and respond to the information people are sharing with you.• You can build rapport and connection in many ways, for example by restating, reflecting, summarizing, labeling emotions, probing (gently!) and using silence to encourage the other person to open up. Open-ended or leading questions (like those covered in the previous chapter) can subtly guide a person to open up to you.• Avoid giving advice, lecturing, sermonizing or judging.• Active listening techniques are best used when you would like someone to open up with you and share their true feelings. Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of She's A Small Wonder: A Small Wonder Podcast. Today, I covered S2E20: Look Into My Eyes, which aired on February 21, 1987. In this episode Joan's high-school friend is not what Ted expects. Thanks to this synopsis, I spend a good half of this episode confused because what I'm seeing in this episode has nothing to do with the synopsis. IMDB has never steered me wrong, until now. This episode is actually about Vicki taking what she has seen on TV (a hypnotist) and applying it to real life. This episode, I've got to say is one of the funniest episodes of this show I have ever covered since starting this podcast. We see the actors (The Lawson Family) acting outside of how their characters would normally act (thanks to Vicki impersonating Mr. Renaldo (the hypnotist) or whatever the guy's name was). We also seen the return of Mrs. Fernwald (this won't be the last time we see her either). She's come to check in with Vicki and to see how she's adjusting after being with the Lawson's for a year. Also she tells them they're being awarded for being to adoptive family or the year or something, so she invites a name to video the Lawson's receiving the award. Thanks to Vicki turning everyone into someone they're not, Ted becomes a monkey, Joan a woman of the night (vamp), Jamie a baby and Mrs. Fernwald a woman who dances the tango. Even the old man with the videotape, Vicki turns him into a dog. Hysterical episode! Join me next month when I cover S2E21: Wally The Wimp, which aired on February 28, 1987. In this episode Pro-wrestler, Jesse Ventura, is invited to the Lawson house for dinner. He has a surprise for Ted, as years before he was the nerdy little kid named Wally who Ted teased in college. Have a great September everyone!

Making Conversations Count: Honest, relatable conversations with business leaders
Making conversations about hypnosis count! Look into my eyes! You will feel very sleepy! You guessed it, we're having one of our many conversations that count with hypnosis star Jonathan Chase. Our conversations Queen Wendy Harris really enjoyed this conversation. Jonathan's not your typical podcast interview guest. He shares with us his journey starting out in the working men's clubs with his stage act. He talks about how he identified a reality where he could use his skills to help people. And when we say help, we mean really help. This isn't just about some easy peasy quit smoking or fear of flying stuff. As an author of many books including our favourite 'How to make friends with yourself and influence people', Jonathan has the following philosophy; “Life shouldn't be a battle to be fought, Life should be an experience to be enhanced.” #SmilesJonC A career highlight has to be when he wrote, directed, produced and played in ‘The Marvellous Mechanical Mesmerist'; Britain's first play where the hypnotised audience played the characters. The Arts Council funded the project and it premiered at the Edinburgh Festival in 2017 with all cast members being wheelchair users.
