Ann Bannon (1932 - present) is a lesbian pulp fiction author. The height of her success was in the late 50s and early 60s with her paperback books like Odd Girl Out, which gave a voice to closeted queer women around the country. For Further Reading Ann Bannon, the Queen of Lesbian Pulp Fiction, Reveals Her Own Amazing Story Interview with Ann Bannon Beebo's Significant Other This month we're talking about Go-Getters. Women who purposefully—or accidentally!—acquired life-changing wealth, good fortune, or influence. History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn’t help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. On this Wonder Media Network podcast we explore the lives of inspiring women in history you may not know about, but definitely should. Every weekday, listeners explore the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of groundbreaking women throughout history who have dramatically shaped the world around us. In each 5 minute episode, we’ll dive into the story behind one woman listeners may or may not know–but definitely should. These diverse women from across space and time are grouped into easily accessible and engaging monthly themes like Educators, Villains, Indigenous Storytellers, Activists, and many more. Womanica is hosted by WMN co-founder and award-winning journalist Jenny Kaplan. The bite-sized episodes pack painstakingly researched content into fun, entertaining, and addictive daily adventures. Back in the days when we liked Ike and loved Lucy, Ann Bannon's “Odd Girl Out” and the other pulp novels in the “Beebo Brinker Chronicles” gave pre-Stonewall lesbians some reading that mattered (interviewed by Steve Pride). And in NewsWrap: Germany passes a Self-Determination Act to make it easier for trans people to legally change gender, the Vatican's Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith publishes a document on “Infinite Dignity” that compares gender affirmation treatment to human trafficking and war, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics establishes rules to exclude trans students from sports at smaller U.S. colleges, Idaho's legislature ends its session with three more bills to restrict the human rights of trans people, a U.S. district court judge in Florida allows a math teacher to tell her students to use her preferred pronouns, far-right homophobes protest outdoor clothing company The North Face's support of the Brave Trails camp for queer youth, and more international LGBTQ news reported this week by David Hunt and Lucia Chappelle (produced by Brian DeShazor). When things don't go the way we plan or hope, powerful feelings show up. Disappointment is common, and the smaller you are, the bigger it feels. How do we help our children learn to manage this emotion as they mature? In this episode, we talk about intercepting the most challenging (and annoying) disappointment reactions, like blaming, whining and sulking, and what to model instead. The recent ABC-TV show The Parent Test has sparked much discussion, so Robin and Lynn (skeptically) decided to dive in. In each episode, parents with different “styles” of parenting are given challenges to complete with their children, and then other parents sit in judgment. What did we think? Was it awful? Exploitative? Or surprisingly enjoyable? BUY LYNN'S NEW BOOK, THE ANXIETY AUDIT Lynn's fourth book focuses on adults and their anxiety. We asked our podcast listeners to share embarrassing stories and, boy, did they deliver. Humiliating moments happen to everyone, but as you'll notice with the stories we share, often feel so much more devastating to tweens and teens. For January's prompt, to read a book published in a year ending in 3, Becca had us read The Charioteer by Mary Renault. It was published in 1953 and known for being one of the first popularly published novels about positive homosexual romance. Despite some language differences between two Americans in 2023 and a British woman in 1953, we really loved this story. For February's prompt of reading a western or pulp novel, we will first be reading True Grit by Charles Portis (western) and then either Odd Girl Out by Ann Bannon (pulp) or In A Lonely Place by Dorothy B. Hughes (noir). The first two are available on Hoopla, but you can find any at your local bookstore or library and read along with us! In this episode we also mentioned: Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin The City and the Pillar by Gore Vidal The Awakening by Kate Chopin
This is a juicy episode— and a really important one for all concerned about the mental health trends with our teens. After over thirty years in the mental health field, Lynn addresses very directly her concerns about the messages teens are receiving, and articulating, about their mental health. It's time to be candid about toxic trends, misinformation, and where our teens are heading. Can we shift this paradigm for them? We previously detailed the parenting phrases we hate (and why you should considering dropping them.) These help for your kids whether they are 3 or 33. BUY LYNN'S NEW BOOK, THE ANXIETY AUDIT Lynn's fourth book focus on adults and their anxiety. Today we are rewinding and sharing a holiday episode we loved. We interview Jane Isay. She is the author of the book Walking on Eggshells, Navigating the Delicate Relationships between Adult Children and Parents. She is a New Yorker from birth and gets right to the point.Have you had enough togetherness during the holidays? "Shut the door," she says. How about when the kids come home, how to make them happy? "Give them the keys!"And, wait until you hear what she said about her son who was Chief of Staff for Chuck Schumer's first senatorial campaign. And just as a hint - it references Al D'Amato!!!! But there is lots more. Jane's bio is extraordinary. She's been an editor for over forty years. She discovered Mary Pipher's Reviving Ophelia, commissioned Patricia O'Connor's bestselling Woe Is I and Rachel Simmons' s Odd Girl Out, and edited such nonfiction classics as Praying for Sheetrock and Friday Night Lights. And of course she's written several books of her own, including Walking on Eggshells and her latest Unconditional Love. Jane's son is Dave Isay, the founder of StoryCorps. Here is a link to an interview for TED Talks he did with his mother. We hope you laugh out loud with this episode and love Jane as much as we did. Thanks so much to Connie Gorant Fisher, our audio engineer.Support us P L E A S E!Buy us a coffee: LINK HERE (only 5 BUCKS and it means alot!) This episode tackles the question we hear most often from our new listeners: how do I support my anxious child? Lynn lays out the three keys for parents: information about how anxiety works, owning family patterns, and moving away from the belief that your child's worries are unique and what must be addressed. There's a lot parents can do to help; here's a roadmap. In this episode, a listener is surprised that her 8 year old is still having big meltdowns and asks if this is common in anxious. While we associate emotional meltdowns and tantrums with little children, they can happen at any age. Emotional regulation is a skill that we develop and work on throughout our lives. What can we do to interrupt our own reactive patterns, and how do we coach our kids in the skills of recognizing and then managing those big feelings? Today's guest is Launch Strategist Lexi Merritt. I first found Lexi on TikTok, and I'm just gonna say this upfront: if you're a creative business owner, or interested in launching an online course, or you just appreciate fun and relatable content from REAL people, then you're gonna want to go to TikTok and follow Lexi. Her TikTok is @leximmerritt. Lexi has worked in marketing for over 8 years. She was the Director of Marketing and Online Course Development for Rachel Simmons, best-selling author of books Odd Girl Out and Enough As She Is. Lexi founded the Pretty Decent Internet Café, where she teaches creative thinkers how to turn their dreams and ideas into businesses. Her two main offerings right now are a VIP Day, where she helps creatives outline a sustainable product or service offering and design a strategy to sell it. And her second offer is The Study, a private membership space for creative business owners, freelancers, and people who like to make things. I really admire the way that Lexi has structured her business. She gives herself a 4-day workweek, taking Thursdays off to have what she calls an “intuition day.” And she built her offers around things that she loves, which are teaching and working with other creative business owners. Lexi's content speaks to my soul, and I'm so excited to have her on the show. I hope you enjoy. This is part I of our double whammy holiday episodes. Part 2 will drop on Friday - that's only two days from now. Today we speak with Jane Isay. For this year's Hallowe'en special we're joined by Backlisted's old fiends Andrew Male and Laura Varnam, following previous guest appearances on episodes dedicated to Beowulf (2020) and Daphne du Maurier's The Breaking Point (2019). Together we explore the work of the novelist Elizabeth Jane Howard, specifically her ghost stories, tales of horror and accounts of psychological terror: Something in Disguise (1969), Odd Girl Out (1972), Mr Wrong (1975), Falling (1999), and We Are For the Dark (1951), the volume of strange stories she co-authored with previous Backlisted subject Robert Aickman. NB. THIS EPISODE IS PACKED WITH SPOILERS and you may wish to read Something in Disguise before you listen to the podcast. I still struggle with belonging. I struggle with the constant fear of unfamiliar situations and people—along with the fear of plenty of familiar situations and people—something Laura James describes in her book, Odd Girl Out. But I can also see my outsider perspective as a strength—and one that I can leverage. My guest today surprised and delighted me when she started our conversation off with her own exploration of belonging—and how finding that intrinsic sense of belonging has become a real strength for her while also leveraging her outsider perspective, too. Reva Patwardhan is a coach and facilitator who guides changemakers and leaders working for social change to help them lead with confidence, clarity, and purpose. This conversation had so many high points for me. We kick off with belonging, but we also talk about deep processing, narrowing the scope of her work, noticing, systems, and why slowing down is so important. Reva and I also talk about her experience through the lens of ADHD, as well as her experience as a highly sensitive person. This conversation is rich and useful, whether you're a neurodivergent business owner or not. Reva's experiences lay out a beautiful framework for better understanding yourself and your own strengths - so with that... Let's find out what works for Reva Patwardhan. I'm able to actually really breathe and disconnect and go to a space of alignment so that I'm not out of control. And then you can make a better decision from that space. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is one of the most important things you can do if you don't have a mantra or something like that. Breathing really gets you out of your head, focused on your heart and centered in the present moment awareness. Breathing brings life to your body and health to your body. So it's one of the most important things that I do. Suggested Resources Book: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle App: Oprah and Deepak Meditation App Bullying Story I was bullied by a teacher in sixth grade who threw me up against the lockers. I think my sister came and supported me. There was no support back then in the sixties or seventies, whatever it was. I mean he never got reprimanded and nothing ever happened, you know. He just didn't like girls and I was very playful and I ticked a lot of people off because I liked to play games. But also my daughter, I remember in middle school she had so many girls. Um, I can't remember the name of the book was about a girl, but I think there's another one, Odd Girl Out (by Rachel Simmons). But the girls are so mean. A lot of times boys just punch each other out when they get ticked off. Right. But girls just like torture you emotionally. I wasn't in a good space at the time; I was in a really abusive relationship at that point myself. So I was not in any kind of conscious space to really help my daughter. So I was just angry and reading books and reaching out to the schools, but I didn't see a lot of support at the schools. That was what was crazy about it. My daughter's 23 and I don't really know what's being done about the bullying thing. They have campaigns about going to college, but I don't see much in the realm of bullying. I don't think very many people deal with it consciously. It's scary. It makes people angry. You fear for your kids lives and kids take their lives because of it sometimes. I do leadership trainings and stuff and I really feel like if we could bring more leadership trainings to schools, to the kids about how wonderful they are and get them to learn to communicate with each other as opposed to the opposite. Even now as adults, you're walking down the street, people won't look at you. I look at people directly now because, if you really connect with people, we have a lot of the same things going on. You can really love somebody if you get to know who they are and even if you don't know them. So it's a world where we're afraid of each other. But it starts as kids and then we grow into these wounded adults. So I think we need a lot more leadership programs, trainings, and children's routines. I don't know that it's going to go into the schools, the schools have some work to do around just the school system.

This is our fourth and final episode of our Let Me Ascertain You: Sex Variants 1941, taking inspiration from a study conducted in the 1930’s by Dr. George Henry in which he interviewed a couple hundred individuals and cataloged data such as a complete family history with symbols to indicate who had what venereal disease, tuberculosis, alcoholism, who committed suicide, who was psychotic. We set some of these personal histories to song and brought others to life with monologues performed at Joe’s Pub in NYC. To kick us off, we’ll start with a song written and performed by Max Vernon taking inspiration from the case study of Moses I. And the little intro you’ll hear is taken from Dr. Henry’s own words, performed by Trey Lyford. Also featured, actor Nedra McClyde performing the case study of Myrtle K, a vaudeville comedian. After that, we’ll wrap things up with a sea shanty, “Odd Girl Out” written by Jill Sobule, inspired by Roberta H., and performed by Marykate O’Neil. Many thanks to everyone involved in this project and our project contributors Ian Daniel, Joel Glassman, Amina Henry, Leicester Landon, and Benjamin Viertel.
