In today's episode, we are joined by my naturopathic oncologist, Dr. Laura James. As you listen to our discussion, it's essential to acknowledge the whirlwind that accompanies a cancer diagnosis. For many, including myself, the speed at which treatment unfolds can be both a blessing and a challenge. The urgency of medical intervention, coupled with the support of excellent health insurance and the unique circumstances of the COVID-19 era, can lead to a swift entry into what is commonly referred to as the breast cancer industrial complex. But what exactly does this term mean? It's a new concept that encompasses medical advancements, institutional processes, and societal expectations surrounding cancer treatment. While grateful for the prompt attention and care received, there's an underlying need to address the implications of this fast-paced medical industry. For me, and perhaps for many others, navigating the breast cancer industrial complex has raised questions about agency, reflection, and informed decision-making. The speed at which decisions are made can sometimes overshadow the opportunity for thorough consideration, prayer, and seeking second opinions—elements crucial to holistic well-being. Together with Dr. James, we'll explore the importance of empowerment in the face of medical urgency, the role of advocacy in navigating treatment pathways, and the significance of holistic approaches to cancer care. ______ Air Dr. I've been using the Air Doctor air purifier for almost a year and absolutely love it! I first heard about it from Dr. Mark Hyman, and even though it was a bit of a splurge compared to what I usually spend, I'm so glad I invested. Every time I change the filter and see all the gunk it collects, I smile, knowing it's doing a great job keeping my air clean! And I'm so happy that all that gunk isn't going into my body ; Click here to purchase: https://airdoctorpro.com/?oid=17&affid=6165 ______ Just Add Buoy Companies contact me every week, asking me to try their products. Honestly, I get food and supplement samples almost weekly! Last week, a San Diego company called Just Add Buoy emailed me to ask if I wanted to try their electrolyte formula. I said yes because I've been looking for an electrolyte formula (without tons of sugar, both fake and real and no dyes) for years. They sent me some samples, and I must tell you how much I love them. I'm trying the Hydration Drops, and they have 87 trace minerals, Ionic ocean electrolytes, and antioxidants. And, also important to me, NO SUGAR (FAKE OR REAL), NO ADDITIVES OR DYES. And it's non-GMO. I like that it's flavorless, and I can add it to a smoothie or even my morning coffee without noticing any flavor change. I was SHOCKED to hear that when I buy frozen fish, it's frozen TWICE. It's usually frozen right after being caught, defrosted, processed, and then frozen again. I buy a lot of frozen fish; sometimes, the taste and texture can be inconsistent. Now that I have a better understanding of the processing of the fish before it hits my plate, it makes me wonder about quality. I called a friend who works at ButcherBox and asked her about the process with their salmon. She assured me that BB only freezes the fish ONCE! Which helps preserve the nutrients and taste. The big one for me is texture. When I eat fish, I want a firm texture, not rubbery! After getting over my shock (yes, fooled again by the food corporations) I asked my BB friend if I could pretty-please offer free salmon to my community. She said yes, so if you use the code 'enos', you can get free salmon (2 pounds) free for a year and $20 off of your first box. https://www.butcherbox.com/enos This podcast is for informational purposes only and none of the information should be construed as medical advice. 30. Can Estrogen Cause Breast Cancer? I loved this interview with my naturopathic oncologist, Dr. Laura James. She is a wealth of information and was a great support to me during my breast cancer battle. We discussed estrogen's role in breast cancer and how too much can be problematic. According to Dr. James, excess estrogen (we pick up a lot of additional estrogen from using plastic and cosmetics) may encourage cancer growth. However, she states that the "jury is still out" on whether estrogen causes cancer. We also talk about consuming soy products (spoiler alert, I eat soy!) and if some soy products are better than others. We also discussed a few products I use and that Dr. James recommends for those gosh-darn hot flashes! Her website is a powerful resource for anyone fighting breast cancer or trying to avoid it! It's very nutrient dense and contains conjugated linoleic acid (I know, what the heck does that mean?), which means Bison has anti-inflammatory properties. Here are the other reasons why I love using Bison in place of ground beef: Higher amounts of omega three fatty acids. More b12, zinc, iron, and selenium than beef. Some studies show it's got four times the vitamin E compared to beef. Lower in calories and cholesterol. It is lower fat, so it will cook faster than ground beef. My friends at BB are offering a deal that they've never offered to anyone! I had to say "pretty please" a couple of times, and guess what? It worked! Many people with autism find navigating a world not designed for them a difficult task. They are forced to spend much of their lives trying to fit in – but what if it is the “neurotypical” majority who should adapt? In this week's episode of The i Podcast we are joined by iMoney and Business Editor Jessie Hewitson to talk about the way her view of the condition has changed dramatically in the years since her son's diagnosis. In the 90s, advocates for a better understanding of autism attempted to reverse the conversation around it, coining the phrase “neurotypical syndrome” – describing “sufferers” as following “impossible social rituals”, finding it “difficult to communicate directly” and lying far more often than autistic people. It's an idea that Jessie has warmed to.Through the process of writing her book Autism: How to raise a happily autistic child she came to appreciate the need to reframe neurodivergence – and look beyond the contradictions of the non-autistic world. One of the people who transformed her view was Laura James – an author and journalist whose autism was only diagnosed in her forties. She joins us to give a unique insight into why neurotypical people should try and “be more autistic”.Read Jessie's writing here: https://inews.co.uk/author/jessie-hewitsonProduced by Julia Webster. Visit LauraJamesND.com. For the Hot Flash supplement created by Dr. James, visit her website above or click here!

Check out The Restart Roadmap: Rewire and Reset Your Career now! In this week's episode, Jason is joined by America's Next Top Model Cycle 19 winner Laura James, as they unpack the so-called “glamorous” world of modeling and acting. Laura gives the inside scoop on what it was really like auditioning for and competing in ANTM, how she spent her winnings of $100,000, and whether it's true that former contestants intentionally omit the experience on their resume to avoid any association with the show. Is it common for a model to make $1 million in any given year? Who would earn more in a campaign - a Gucci model or a Target model? Are TV shows or movies more generous with pay? Laura answers all of this plus the ultimate secret to nailing auditions and booking modeling gigs in another episode you can't afford to miss. This week - our last episode of the season brings all the horrors of World War I with the additional terror of an unexplained pandemic! In this episode Nicola and Hannah discuss the gendered expectations of soldiers returning from WWI with disabilities, especially facial injuries, and the expectations of women in their lives. There's a brief Robin Williams-diversion, and then a discussion of the work of American artist Anna Coleman-Ladd in restoring confidence to some soldiers with her delicately crafted copper masks that served to mimic the men's pre-war faces. Thanks to everyone who listened through this season of our podcast, we appreciate every single one of you. We will be back sometime in 2022, hopefully recording together and not being hit by things falling off the desks we're recording under. Anything for slightly better audio quality. Thanks to Dorian (here's his twitter) for his reading of “We Are the Maimed” and “In Flanders Fields.” Dorian is a queer-, disability- and trans- rights activist and artist based in Melbourne. He also has a kofi: https://ko-fi.com/sindesiecle This episode contains descriptions of war injuries and disability, mental illness, suicide and suicidal ideation, murder, facial injuries, pandemics and illnesses, comas, domestic violence and murder by intimate partners, and swearing. Why do we warn people about the swearing? We just don't know. This episode also contains discussion of medical issues. It is not intended as advice. Do not take medical advice from two historians who live with their parents, or any strangers online. Please speak to a doctor or other medical professional if you have questions about Covid-19 or vaccination. I still struggle with belonging. I struggle with the constant fear of unfamiliar situations and people—along with the fear of plenty of familiar situations and people—something Laura James describes in her book, Odd Girl Out. But I can also see my outsider perspective as a strength—and one that I can leverage. My guest today surprised and delighted me when she started our conversation off with her own exploration of belonging—and how finding that intrinsic sense of belonging has become a real strength for her while also leveraging her outsider perspective, too. Reva Patwardhan is a coach and facilitator who guides changemakers and leaders working for social change to help them lead with confidence, clarity, and purpose. This conversation had so many high points for me. We kick off with belonging, but we also talk about deep processing, narrowing the scope of her work, noticing, systems, and why slowing down is so important. Reva and I also talk about her experience through the lens of ADHD, as well as her experience as a highly sensitive person. This conversation is rich and useful, whether you're a neurodivergent business owner or not. Reva's experiences lay out a beautiful framework for better understanding yourself and your own strengths - so with that... Let's find out what works for Reva Patwardhan. Join Laura as she interviews six guests who have each developed their own unique sense of rhythm in their work. The episodes will be released weekly throughout April and May and are presented by Laura Barton and produced by Geoff Bird. Music for this season was written and performed by Laura James. Kaytee and Meredith are deep in the holiday season and we’re ready to talk about all the books! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: a bookish moment of connection with a new friend and a book ornament for the tree. Next, we tackle what we are currently reading, with plenty of kid lit in this week’s selections as well as some cozy reads and some creepy ones. This week’s deep dive is about winter reads and the titles we like to cozy up with during the holidays. As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands: a new (old) mystery series to sink your teeth into, and a travel memoir. http://nathancurnow.weebly.com/Nathan Curnow : poetAfter gaining qualifications in Community Development I worked in Drug and Alcohol and Crisis Housing for many years in Melbourne, where I quickly became numb and exhausted. I had been pursuing writing for a couple of years and so decided to commit further by quitting my job and enrolling in Creative Writing at Swinburne Tafe. Following that I entered the University of Melbourne, which for me was like a kind of hothouse, one that fast-tracked my development. Studying under Kevin Brophy and Philip Salom, among others, I completed a Post Grad Dip in Creative Writing and moved to Portland on the far south west coast of Victoria. Some might think of me as a Melbourne poet, but the majority of my writing has occurred in the regional wilds of Victoria. The irony is that as soon as I moved out of the city, the small opportunities and breakthroughs began to come my way, which meant some serious travel! I spent the next six years crashing on friends couches, in hotel rooms or in my car on the side of the road, all to perform, read, write and generally make a go of it.In 2007 things got even crazier when I set off to write about my stays at ten haunted sites around the country. The adventure was featured widely in print and radio, and sparked the interest of a number of festivals where I was invited to appear. In 2010 I co-edited, along with Lisa Greenaway and Ella Holcombe, Going Down Swinging No. 30, the iconic and much loved literary journal that has given myself and so many emerging writers a great kickstart. I have also had the opportunity to collaborate with a range of gifted people over the years, including artist Dr Carmel Wallace, composer Anthony Lyons, musicians Wulfbyrne Brown, Joel Roberts and Michael Wallace, plus film students (Raphaela Lee, Clare O'Donnell and Laura James) from RMIT.
