A lovely conversation with improv comedy star Will Hines. Will is a actor/improviser/coach based out of LA. You know him from UCB where he performs and teaches regularly. He's done every improv podcast worth its salt (now including this one!) His acting credits include Brooklyn 99, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer, Conan O'Brien and many more. He recalls his early days at the UCB and his transition into acting. We move on to discuss some of his other ventures including his band Wayne & Rodney; his books How to be the Greatest Improviser on Earth and Pirate Robot Ninja (co-written with Billy Merritt); and what it means to do improv on-mic. Will is teeming with advice, which is sprinkled throughout the episode, so this is a must listen for anyone looking to up their improv game. Owen and Clark interview Brian's improv coach, Stan Tingle (Will Hines, Greatest Improv School, How to be the Greatest Improviser on Earh, Wrecked) who worked with Brian for six months. In those six months Stan and Brian had a big impact on one another. Brian was pushed to brawl and become more insane through Stan's tough notes and Stan got into cocaine and a mayoral campaign.
This week on the podcast we have the first teacher who believed in Sebastian at UCB. Will Hines (@williebhines) literally wrote the book on improv. Episode 7 of the Improv Comedy Connection features Will Hines! Will has been improvising with the UCB since 1999, where he started with them in New York. He's now in LA, and performs, teaches and coaches improv with the UCB in LA while also acting, writing, and doing a lot of other things as well. Recently, along with Billy Merritt who was on epsiode 2, Will released the book Pirate Robot Ninja - An Improv Fable -- a very different book from his highly regarded How to Be the Greatest Improviser on Earth. They're both great, so be sure to pick them both up! Will shares some great stuff in our conversation that will be interesting and meaningful for the working improviser, as well as someone earlier on in their journey. Some great insights on teaching are shared in our conversation as well, so you'll want to listen to this one more than once! You can find Will at www.willhines.net, on Twitter @willhines, and Instagram @williebhines. We also talked about his Tumblr account and how it was being ignored -- but you can help solve that problem by visiting his site there at improvnonsense.tumblr.com.
Actor, comedian, and improv instructor, Will Hines, is on the podcast today! Will is a UCB great who has appeared in a ton of stuff like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Arrested Development, Broad City, and the new film Between Two Ferns: The Movie. Jason shares some exciting news and then Will talks with Jason about Scott Aukerman's impeccable memory, performing on Comedy Bang Bang and Improv for Humans, his years at UCB, how improv has evolved over the last 20 years, how to get out of an improv rut, fun things to do more in improv, sensitivity in comedy, his book "How to be the Greatest Improviser on Earth," and so much more! This is a great episode for people who like great things so give it a listen!
