At the height of Batmania in the first half of 1966, nearly every press outlet found it necessary to do a feature story on the phenomenon. But many in the media were not terribly impressed by Batman, so these articles tend to look down their noses at the show. One such example is “Has TV Gone Batty?”, an article by John Skow in the May 7, 1966, issue of The Saturday Evening Post. Aside from the snark, and misinformed discussion of camp, the article gives us some interesting insights into the shooting of the show and the thoughts of Adam West, William Dozier, Lorenzo Semple Jr, and others involved in making it. This time, we dig into this article. PLUS: the Guy with an Amazing Hat version of the theme, more from Adam West's July 24, 1997, appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and your mail responding to several of our recent episodes! #200: "Batman: The Movie": The Novel #201: Chip Kidd's Book of Bat-Merch
When the Batman TV show set off Batmania in 1966, a wide variety of toys and other tie-in items, not all of them licensed, hit the market. Since licensers seldom made style guides in the ‘60s, rights to the actors likenesses weren't available, and some of the onslaught of Bat-crap came from overseas makers who thought Batman's costume would look better in orange, the results are highly entertaining. This time we look at Chip Kidd's 1996 book Batman Collected, a history of Bat-merch from 1938 to 1996. Y'know, we STILL want that Mego Batcave Playset. Plus, the Sheet Music Boss piano tutorial version of the Batman theme, Adam West's reaction to the film Batman and Robin, and your response to our “Women in Season Two” wrapup! The fruitless search for a guest (see page two for Ben Bentley's explanation of why the rights to Adam and Burt's likenesses weren't available)

Namaste. The road to creating your own book, especially as an independent artist, is typically a long one. The process is also not without expense—in addition to your time and expertise. But it can also be very fulfilling and a lot of fun! We're closing out 2022 with something new: A Poured Over Double Shot with host Miwa Messer. Cormac McCarthy doesn't really do interviews — If you want to know about the work, it's on the page, he says. Jenny Jackson and Chip Kidd are part of the team that publish McCarthy; Jenny's been his editor for the last eight years, and Chip has designed McCarthy's hardcover jackets from 1992's All the Pretty Horses all the way up to this fall's The Passenger and Stella Maris, along with the recent reissues of McCarthy's backlist including Suttree, Blood Meridian and No Country for Old Men. They join us to talk about McCarthy's surprising new books — his first since Pulitzer Prize winner The Road (2006), getting the jackets right and more in the first half of this Poured Over Double Shot episode. When a pal asked Cheryl Strayed to take over writing the “Dear Sugar” column in The Rumpus, her first thought was, “Who am I to give people advice? I'd never taken a class in psychology or gone to therapy or any of that stuff. But also, I was afraid specifically to write an advice column on the internet, because it was the age of snark…” Cheryl's open-hearted, non-judgmental letters to readers redefined the medium — and inspired two podcasts, Dear Sugars and Sugar Calling. Some of that work is collected in Tiny Beautiful Things, which was adapted into an acclaimed stage play by Nia Vardalos and is coming to Hulu next year as a series starring Kathryn Hahn (WandaVision). Cheryl joins us to talk about trust and empathy, finding freedom by writing letters to strangers, what she's working on now and more in the second half of this episode. Featured Books: The Passenger by Cormac McCarthy Stella Maris by Cormac McCarthy All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy Torch by Cheryl Strayed Wild by Cheryl Strayed Tiny Beautiful Things (10th Anniversary Edition) by Cheryl Strayed Poured Over is Produced and hosted by Miwa Messer and mixed by Harry Liang. We're taking a break until 1/3/23, but we'll be back with new episodes Tuesdays and Thursdays (with occasional Saturdays) then.

Is it shallow to judge a book by its cover? There are lots of good reasons - and not all of them have to do with looks. We speak with legendary Jurassic Park cover designer Chip Kidd about fitting an entire story into a single image, “Caustic Cover Critic” James Morrison about creating art that sells, and hear about the importance of reading and telling stories from a different perspective from designer and founder of Black and Brown Book Designers Dominique Jones and illustrator Lisa Perrin. What do you do when you’re stuck? Something else. Designer Chip Kidd got a dream assignment: Create the book cover for a soon-to-be-blockbuster: Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park. Oh, and make it iconic. When the pressure to perform is that high, it's easy to get creatively paralyzed. Chip recounts exactly how he got started and how he got unstuck — over and over — on the journey to create one of the best-known book covers of the 20th century. He tells the story in his own fast-paced, funny, pointed words, with lots of smart, actionable advice for anyone setting out on their own creative quest.A longtime book designer for Knopf, where he designed the cover for Jurassic Park and hundreds more books, Chip Kidd is the author of two novels, two nonfiction titles and a study of Batman. Martin Amis was born in Oxford in 1949 and is a British novelist, essayist, and memoirist - all of whom show up to contribute to his latest novel, Inside Story. As it happens I read Lolita in tandem with Inside Story, so the front-end of our conversation is laden with nasty Nabokovian-related questions. Since Vladimir, along with Saul Bellow, has heavily influenced Martin's writing over the years, I decided this was fair game. Amis is best known for his novels Money (1984) and London Fields (1989). He received the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his memoir Experience and has been nominated for the Booker Prize twice (shortlist for Time's Arrow and longlist for Yellow Dog). He served as Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Manchester until 2011, and is considered one of the most influential novelists of our times. We met via Zoom to talk about everything he throws into this novel, plus the way he frames it. Nabokov looms large, as I say, as does Christopher Hitchens, and, towards the end, ketchup and relish. Like many of Amis's other works, Inside Story contains plenty of very good laughs - one pretty well every 3-4 pages (in between, I frequently caught myself wearing a wide smirk). There's a lot to be said for this, and for some genuinely beautiful writing in the novel, particularly about Israel; plus there's a fair amount of engaging literary criticism. In short, it's well worth spending time with this excellent hybrid; as, I hope you'll agree, it is with this interview... It starts mid-sentence, with the two of us talking about Chip Kidd's dust jacket design.
Every creative work you've ever loved has a hero's journey behind it. The first spark. The endless iteration. The inevitable setbacks. The magical people who appear to help. And the breakthrough idea.On each episode of Spark & Fire, an iconic creator tells their own story about the crooked path to creation. No host. No interview. It's the creator – entirely in their own words – against the backdrop of original music for the prepared piano. In this trailer, you’ll hear Season 1 guests, including the book designer Chip Kidd, author Susan Orlean, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, novelist Isabel Allende, screenwriter Kemp Powers, architect Thomas Heatherwick, and the choreographer Bill T. Jones. And look forward to episodes with director Rian Johnson, Homegoing author Yaa Gyasi, Apollo Theater executive producer Kamilah Forbes, artist Mark Bradford and more…What really happened to them on the road to success? It's hot outside but it’s about to get explosive in this blockbuster episode! Inks has excavated a prehistoric load of information for the iconic cover of Jurassic Park, Brengineer lurks in the shadows alongside the masked menace of Friday The Thirteenth and Tapes pumps up some 1986 muscle power with Predator. Teeth, promiscuous teenagers and firepower are all on the grill, so grab a bud light lime, kick back and enjoy.
Prolific Graphic Designer and Batman Super Collector: Chip Kidd sits down with us to talk all things Batman! Tune in!
Inspiration to start on the path of creativity and/or freedom without waiting for others. Know that help will come. My special thanks to awesome designer Chip Kidd for providing me with great wisdom five years ago that helped me design my first book cover (and other covers after that!); and to Sri Mooji who continues to light my spiritual path. (Minor correction: When I discussed the Katha Upanishads, the key figure of the story is Nachiketas. I accidentally swapped the “k” and “t” in my excitement haha) Namasté. selenasage.com // Fb+IG: Selena Sage - Author
Despite the rise of e-books, physical books aren't going anywhere. Graphic designer Chip Kidd shares why their design is so lasting.
Chip Kidd is an American graphic designer best known for his book covers. Based in New York City, Kidd is arguably the most famous dust jacket designers in the world. He has been credited by many as having spawned "a revolution in the art of America book packaging,” despite having no recognizable style. In fact, he says that “A signature look is crippling… [because] the simplest and most effective solutions aren't dictated by style.” It has been said by many that the history of book design can be split into two eras: before Kidd and after. He went to work at Knopf in 1986. Today he is associate art director and freelances widely, designing in total, some 75 dust jackets a year. We met in his offices at Knopf in New York to discuss his book Chip Kidd: Book 2. In so doing we talk about Meryl Streep, Haruki Murakami Martin Amis, the Eisner Awards, French kissing Neil Gaiman and connecting with authors, Alfred and Blanche Knopf, Sonny Mehta, D.A. Dwiggins, Paul Bacon, Geek Love, die cuts, Glamorama, the Yale Review, Chip's late husband poet and Yale Review editor J. D. McClatchy, Chris Ware, the Factory record label, Peter Seville, New Order album covers, the importance of dust jackets and identities, ebooks, death, being paid for your ideas and much more. * This interview was recorded in October, 2019. Sonny Mehta died in December, 2019.
The Drunken Odyssey with John King: A Podcast About the Writing Life
On today's show, I share two interviews. The first is with the fiction writer and memoirist Tim O'Brien about how to live in this world. The second is with the comic creator Chris Ware and his editor at Pantheon Books, Chip Kidd, with whom we discussed how design meshes with the content of a story.
This past summer Meghan O'Rourke was appointed editor of The Yale Review. In an award citation the Whiting Foundation praised her “far-reaching and ambitious” work, and noted that her “voice stands out for its power and originality.” She is the author of the memoir The Long Goodbye (2011) and the poetry collections Once (2011), Halflife (2007), and Sun In Days (2017), which The New York Times named one of the 10 Best Poetry Books of the year. Her essays and poems have appeared in magazines such as The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, and Poetry. She has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Radcliffe Fellowship, a Whiting Award, a Lannan fellowship, two Pushcart Prizes, the May Sarton Poetry Prize, the Union League Prize from the Poetry Foundation, and a Front Page Award for her cultural criticism. She has taught at New York University, Princeton, and The New School, and is currently completing a book about chronic illness. I met with Meghan in her new, bare-walled office in New Haven. It was her very first day on the job, working in the office that is. Among other things we talked about the history of The Yale Review, bridging disciplines, current events, criticism, the Paris Review in its heyday, magazines as spawning grounds for books, re-designs; private experiences with print and the pleasures of being immersed in reading; book designer Chip Kidd; Pentagram; book collecting, broadsides, and much more.
On this episode Debbie talks to designer Chip Kidd and his good friend, graphic novelist Chris Ware.
Our conversation with this terrific designer was part of the Museum of Arts and Design’s exhibition Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die: Punk Graphics 1976-1986. The musician was Lenny Kaye of the Patti Smith Group, a luminary of that era, who made a shocking revelation: he played in a fraternity band.
He created book jackets for Michael Crichton to John Updike, without bloody conflicts: “It’s the author’s book, and if I’m not taking them where they want with the cover, they have every right to say so, and then we figure it out.” Talent and humility. Imagine my disappointment. A conversation at the Museum of Arts and Design. Music (and more) from Lenny Kaye.
“Frankly, I don’t think book covers sell books,” Chip Kidd tells the Outlaws. This statement from one of the preeminent book cover designers of the past 30 years is admittedly confusing, or it may be just be his expert spin on the idiom, don’t judge a book by its cover. “Books that are No. 1 on the bestseller list … I’ll look at it and think it’s the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen,” Kidd says. He also believes the covers of the wildly successful Harry Potter series are generic and conventional, but loved the cover of James Frey’s controversial and ultimately debunked book “A Million Little Pieces.”In part 2 of the Outlaws’ conversation with Chip Kidd, the discussion moves deeper into Kidd’s career as a graphic designer, as BigMike and Chris “Bulldog” Collins ask him about his use of color, if he tracks the sales of books he works on, and whether he has to be passionate about a project to work on it. “I can work on something that my heart isn’t totally in, as long as I don’t feel it’s a moral or ethical problem,” Kidd says. And of course, the Outlaws ask Kidd to advise his 24-year-old self. Aside from a few stock tips and advice on surviving in a digital world, there’s not much he would change. “I’ve always kept my day job,” Kidd says. “I’m lucky, because I happen to love my day job, and I can’t begin to imagine what that’s like if you don’t.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The world famous Chip Kidd is interviewed by the amazing Leonard Sultana (An Englishman in San Diego). This interview is so charming and it was such an honour to be there. When I looked around the room during the talk everyone was just in awe of Chip. Anyone that is aspiring to go out there and make something, should listen to this interview. We discover the history of Chip Kidd, how it all began. Chip's first ever Batman story and where that came from. (which is fascinating by the way) We also find out lots of inside knowledge about his work on the Watchmen book, which includes a bit of design info that even blew Chip's mind! Chip is funny, charismatic and eager to share his wisdom and everyone can take something from this. I love it and hopefully so will you!
In this week's episode, I share a conversation I had with author, editor, comic book fan, and book designer Chip Kidd, from about 40 feet away from Biscayne Bay. We spoke about the DC/Marvel divide, the sublime art of Alex Ross, how art springs from our need to see the work we want to enjoy the most, and how so many areas of the book business intersect, if you are paying attention.
