What do The Meisner Technique, controlled ageing of milk, and New York Wines have in common? We know, it's a bit too easy this one. The answer is of course: Dan Belmont. Dan literally wrote the book on New York wines. Literally in the traditional (and best) definition of the word. From a background in the theatre to becoming a leading expert in the worlds of both cheese and wine, Dan joins us for a two part episode where we explore his incredible journey so far. We explore his approach to acting and learn why he didn't make it in the ballet. From here Dan takes us on an adventure to Finger Lakes and dipping his toes into the world of New York wines. Amongst these fingers and toes are many stories of revelation, revolution, and mold. Ferg compares Finger Lakes (and other New York appellations) establishing themselves both locally and internationally with England, while Lee attempts to get to the beating heart of Dan's acting method and love for cheese. This is the first of a two part episode featuring Dan. Next week we will talk about how he went on to establish Good Wine Good People and learn a great deal more about New York State wine. This is a great episode, primarily as Ferg and Lee don't interrupt our wonderful guest too much. Enjoy this first slice of Prime Dan; this man's knowledge and passion seem to know no bounds. From the conversation I had with actress, voiceover artist, and coach Simone Serra these are my takeaways. Expectations are a funny thing. If we can come into more experiences in our life without expectations we make space to receive and have the freedom to try what comes. Next, Success is an ever changing landscape and it encompasses both your personal and professional life. It's ok to ask yourself, what does it mean to me to be successful and questioning whether your own limiting beliefs are getting in the way of your definition. And finally where focus goes energy flows so where are you focusing? Simone is Voiceover Artist and Coach who has cultivated a successful Voiceover career over the last five years, having her voice streamed on all media platforms from Spotify to TikTok. With an extensive resume of working with clients from The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Nutella, Dominos and Ulta Beauty, she attributes her accomplishments and success to the many years she dedicated to her education and training. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Theater Studies at Montclair State University, followed by completing a two-year conservatory training at the Maggie Flanigan Studio, which specializes in the Meisner Technique. Soon she will add adjunct professor to her resume and begin teaching a Beginner Voiceover Workshop at Tisch Drama School this fall. Her pivot into the Voiceover world and the following successes have given her the confidence to reverse course and begin to pursue acting on stage and film again. TOP TAKEAWAYS: What could change if you asked yourself this question: “What would make this (mood/task/day/moment/action) feel 5% better?” Small goals for the win! One of the most fundamental things we've leaned into and accepted this year is the need for a team — for community care, instead of just self-care. Emotions are necessary for communication — they are the crucial information that takes our experience of the world from a line drawing to full Technicolor. And we won't be debating that emotions are crucial and not something to be “eliminated” at work anymore. Casey Erin Clark is a voice, public speaking, and communication coach, performer, author, entrepreneur, podcast host, and leader in both the entertainment and business worlds. She is a fierce advocate for gender justice and spends her days speaking, teaching, and writing about the power of women's voices, while seizing fulfilling opportunities to perform on screen and stage. In 2014, Casey and Julie Fogh co-founded Vital Voice Training, a voice and speech coaching company on a mission to change the conversation about what leaders are “supposed” to sound like and empower everyone to own the power of their full vocal instrument and presence. Casey hails from the cornfields of southern Illinois (where she grew up singing with her family Von Trapp-style) and has a BFA in musical theater from Illinois Wesleyan University. She also coaches musical theater pros of all ages, is a member of SAG-AFTRA and AEA, performed at the 2013 Oscars with the Les Miserables movie cast, and sings with the Grammy-nominated and Tony-honored Broadway Inspirational Voices choir. Recommending books and breakfast restaurants is her love language. Will perform the Lafayette speed rap from Hamilton on demand. Julie Fogh is a voice coach and interpersonal communications specialist who works with actors and business leaders helping them navigate their individual tensions and blocks, revealing the personal power and unique and captivating humanity that exists in all of us. Through Vital Voice Training, Julie and her co-founder Casey Erin Clark blend the toolbox of the professional actor with their powerful frameworks for embracing one's authentic speaking voice to businesses, schools, and organizations all over the country. Julie was raised in Seattle and earned her BA in Theatre and Women Studies from University of Washington. She earned an MFA in acting from Northern Illinois University, a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum that engaged with the physical body, the emotional life, imagination, use of language, character construction, non-verbal communication and the truth of the moment. She has studied with the Moscow Art Theatre and University of Copenhagen and has studied Meisner Technique with Kathryn Gately, Michael Chekhov Technique with Deborah Robertson, and Movement and Period Style with Lloyd Williamson. She loves YA novels and her cranky rescue cat, Ashland.

Every November, as the weather and leaves continue to change and we enter a season of Thanksgiving as well as gift-giving, this podcast sets aside a few episodes to focus on how we can make our lives and our careers better and more fulfilling. And so we begin the third annual presentation of this enlightening series... Bettering Ourselves, Bettering Our Careers (Part One) You'll hear from artists, coaches, and performers and how they have a found balance between their on stage and off stage lives, providing perspective and insight from their own challenges and experiences. Jules Helm starts us off with a focus on self-care and personal growth, using movement and acting techniques to bring both our mind and body into alignment. He will be sharing his own journey of self discovery as he learned to better love himself and be more comfortable with others, keeping performance onstage rather than having it mask the rest of his life as well. We will also get into the various techniques he teaches to bring actors into a more authentic presentation of themselves as well as their characters. As Jules says, “The first step toward great acting is deeper self-discovery and realization,” which is a great place for us to start bettering ourselves and bettering our careers. 02:42 - Jules and his hometown of Portland 08:26 - Story #1 and being inspired by Charlie Chaplin 18:52 - Story #2 and how the world conditions us 31:45 - Story #3 and his teaching of actors 44:12 - The Williamson Technique Subscribe to WINMI and get Bonus Episodes on Supercast OR Make a Donation to the production of this podcast ---------- Why I'll Never Make It is hosted by Off-Broadway actor and singer Patrick Oliver Jones and is a production of WINMI Media, LLC. Follow WINMI: Website | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube The Williamson Technique... The Williamson Technique, developed by Loyd Williamson, is most often taught to actors in conjunction with the Meisner Technique, because it pairs well with the particular emotional demands placed on actors. Williamson collaborated with, and was a student of, American choreographer and dancer Anna Sokolow. He was watching Sokolow's dancers move freely and without tension, while at the same time he observed Meisner's actors were crippled physically by the size of their emotional lives. Thus, the development of the Williamson Technique began as a movement training for actors that is loosely based in modern dance. It is designed to help the actor access and inhabit a physical instrument (i.e. the body) that is open, released, vulnerable, expansive, and responsive. The Williamson Technique emphasizes these primary objectives: Free the actor's instrument by accessing awareness and permission. Cultivate the student's connection to his personal, ‘truthful‘ experience, and the permission to act on it expansively. Enhance the actor's sensual (of or relating to the five senses) relationship with the world, thereby creating a vivid connection with and sensitivity to impulses. Bring that freedom and connection with one's surroundings into ensemble collaboration and the creation of original physical performance. Audition Story Connection is definitely one of the bed rocks of acting and performing on stage, whether it's with the fellow performers on stage or the audience itself. In our main conversation, Jules mostly talked about a connection with ourselves first and foremost, but there is also the important connection with the role or the show that we're in or auditioning for. In this week's bonus episode Jules shares an audition story that took him out of his comfort zone and into the world of the Blue Man Group. Become a monthly subscriber to get access to this and other bonus episodes. Final Five Questions After our main conversation, Jules sat down to answer the five final questions. Among several topics, he shares what success has meant to him (a continuation of what he mentioned in the second story) and what frustrates him most about this industry, particularly in New York City. Read it all on the WINMI Blog.
It's a solo episode this week fellow Daydreamers! What kind of art do you want to put into the world? Charlie talks about some of the important, provocative work that is currently being done. Leah Lamb teaches how to think in the language of stories. I've been taking classes with her for the better part of a year, and I can say it works. In this interview she steps back and looks over two huge stories of our time, the story of climate change, and the story of initiation.A bit about Leah:Leah learned about how stories could be allies and friends when she was a child wandering the fields, creeks, and ponds of a rural farm in Vermont. Her first loves were writing and theater. Leah experienced first-hand how stories can unite when her play about suicide, “Berries,” was produced by VA Young Writers for The Theater. She went on to study the Eric Morris technique and the Meisner Technique at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City and interned at Williamstown Theatre Festival. Her love of the environment led her to study at Prescott College, where she earned a double major in outdoor experiential education and environmental education through performance. After she worked with youth at risk for many years as a wilderness guide with Outward Bound and other programs, her commitment to social justice led her to earn a master's degree in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University. To explore Leah's upcoming classes, go here: https://leahlamb.com/upcoming-classes/To support the podcast and get goodies, go on over to Patreon. The podcast Instragram is here. One stat that is shocking to read is that less than 1% of all actors book at least thirty jobs over the course of a career. Only 30% book a second job! This week Charlie talks to award winning actress Andrea Osvárt, who has carved out an incredibly successful two-decade career both in America and throughout Europe. Charlie and Andrea talk about how she made it into that 1% club, how she handled early success, and how she found her way into coaching and helping actors work through the barriers that keep them limited. We all encounter red lights, and knowing that they eventually turn green can help navigate those tough times. There will be many times that the idea of quitting and moving on to something else is palpable. This week Charlie talks to his former student Simone Serra, who has just passed her first decade and is still at it. Simone has carved out a successful voice over career which has sustained her and opened many doors. Charlie and Simone discuss the art of voice overs, and the important work she's done to overcome self-sabotage. You are worthy of all good things! It's easy to fall into a pattern of complacency when it comes to nourishing your intellectual curiosity. Just reading one article can lead you to an unexpected education on a number of things. In this weeks solo episode, Charlie shares what he's learned about the importance of Jean-Luc Godard, and the life of actress and activist Marsha Hunt who died at the age of 104. He also talks about the current production of I Joan currently running at Shakespeare's Old Globe in London, and the controversy of writing Joan of Arc as a non-binary person. How many of you have been told at some point that you have to choose, kids or career. You can't have both! Charlie talks with Tara Westwood. She got pregnant in her 20's during her training with Maggie, converted to Mormonism, and moved to Idaho to raise a family. Her journey back to NYC, her mission to finish training, pursue her career, and be an incredible mom is an inspiration. It's lead to her current project, the short film Triggered which she produced, directed, and stared in. It recently premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. The life you want is possible! Having a strong belief in yourself, refusing to give into a woe is me mentality, and having the temerity to really go after what you want is incredibly important if you are trying to carve out an artistic career. This week Charlie talks to his former student Rolando Chusan, who booked his first series regular role on the ABC series Promised Land. Rolando discusses how he got this part, and the many things he's learned about being a professional actor over the past decade. Adriana Adler was born and raised in Southern California. Started acting when I was in 7th grade when my best friend at the time asked me to join drama club with her, and I've been acting ever since. I did theater in high school and then went on to get a degree in Theater at the California Lutheran University, along with my degree in Math. Yes I am also a nerd who tutors Math for a living. My senior year of college I met my Meisner teacher Markus Flanagan who studied directly under Sanford Meisner. I took a total of 6 years with him, learning the proper 2 year process of learning the Meisner Technique. The following years I spent in his Master Class where we did scenes, audition techniques, and improv among other things. My last year in his class (right before Covid hit) I met my awesome friend Natasha. Markus called us as becoming best friends from the beginning and he was right! I am currently working on a new web series with Natasha and our other awesome friend Kaye. It is going to be a series of comedic skits. I love dramatic acting too, but I've always had a love for comedy. My stupid sense of humor and good comedic timing always bring something fun to the table. I am also an artist who mostly works in charcoal and chalk pastel, but I also work with oil and acrylic. I've found that having another creative outlet really helps me with my acting. People and animals are my favorite subjects to paint. I love animals (cats are my favorite), so painting them is always fun!
Dustin Barzell from Ceramicism creates intricate cups using a colored clay inlay technique. Inspired by the polymer clay craze of the 90s, he started layering slab-rolled clay at a community studio in Brooklyn before discovering the wonderful world of nerikomi and agateware.Dustin shares with us his process of mixing colored clay and how he constantly comes up with fresh designs to add to his ever-expanding repertoire of inlaid patterns. We also take a dive into the connection between our emotional and physical being through creative outlets, ceramics as a healing journey vs. the intellectual pursuit of being a part-time lawyer, and how improv-based acting (Meisner Technique) restored his artistic framework and influenced his improvised and joy-filled ceramic compositions.Meanderings include discussions about the deliciously rounded letters in "ice cream", chapped lips, newsletter bliss, a wide variety of (unsponsored) platforms that can help you run a business, the irony behind ceramicism.football, and how smiling while you talk can change everything.A thousand flowers,Aimee & ClareOur theme music is by Nick Thompson-Brown at @wayitworksmusicRate, review and subscribe (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-slip-cast/)Support the show

The first step in pursuing a career in the Entertainment Industry is to move to LA...right? Well, listen up, because on today's episode, I invited a guest that moved down to LA to pursue his dreams of being an actor to talk about his time and his discoveries on the classic tale of "LA Dream Chasers." The thing is with the emergence of new projects that shoot outside of Hollywood and even the US, the demand for people in LA has decreased, opening the door to more and more artists being able to achieve their dreams and goals from anywhere, especially amidst this pandemic. We sat down to craft a mini Declassified LA Survival Guide from the perspective of two different people: someone who moved to LA, and someone who is scared to move to LA. S Today's special guest is one of my best friends and fellow artist, the one and only Ryan Day. He's a Bay Area realtor, podcast host (check out "The Curious Realtor" on anywhere you listen to podcasts on), and actor in training. He has trained under the Meisner Technique in Los Angeles as well as in the Bay Area. Ryan plans to continue acting locally after the pandemic and looks forward to pursuing his TV and Film career…hopefully by my side! We sat down together and discussed life in LA and about both of experiences in and out of Hollywood. Elaine Williams has worked in the Entertainment Industry for over 35 years in Television Production and Development. She is an actress, acting coach and currently teaches acting at the Baron Brown Studio in Los Angeles, CA. After taking a class on The Meisner Technique, which is an acting technique that is about authentic acting and realistic emotional responses, I realized that this was not only a lesson in acting, but a lesson in LIFE, and what I believe to be authentic creativity. Stanford Meisner was a very notable actor, but ended up becoming such a legendary teacher that would focus on authenticity in the art form and not over-intellectualizing it, but to live truthfully and honestly in the present moment and respond from that place. This episode is far more than just about an acting technique. It is an episode about showing up authentically as you are and about living in the present moment and all that exists for us there. | Elaine Williams | Instagram | @actatbaronbrown Website | www.baronbrown.com | Courtney Cole | ► The Love Freq Podcast | https://tinyurl.com/y2kaye4h ► Website | https://tinyurl.com/yxvrg6mu ► Exclusive Love Freq Content | https://tinyurl.com/y6mqau6x ► Courtney's Music | https://tinyurl.com/y4abajyd | Listen to The Love Freq Podcast with Courtney Cole | ►iTunes | https://tinyurl.com/y2kaye4h ►Anchor | https://tinyurl.com/y2rmdnpk | Connect with Courtney | ►Website | https://tinyurl.com/yxvrg6mu ►Instagram | https://tinyurl.com/y3sth85a ►Facebook | https://tinyurl.com/yxnrb7ck ►Twitter | https://tinyurl.com/yx93y7hv --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thelovefreqpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thelovefreqpodcast/support
