There are a number of big stories in true crime at the moment, including a new dig for clues in the 1966 disappearance of the Beaumont children.Meanwhile, it's been a year since Ballarat's Samantha Murphy vanished—even as a suspect has been charged, her remains remain missing. Former NSW officer Beau Lamarre-Condon is heading to trial for the murders of Jesse Baird and his partner Luke Davies, while international controversy swirls over former pediatric nurse Lucy Letby's conviction for murdering seven infants. To discuss all of those developing stories is as regular contributor to Australian True Crime and leading Criminologist Dr. Xanthé Mallett.Do you have information regarding any of the cases discussed on this podcast? We talk about current events, and then we shift into talking about horror and tabletop boardgames. Finally we talk about villains and the evolution. On today's show, Prof. Xanthé Mallett discusses "Mushroom Murders": Erin Patterson is charged with murdering three people using poisonous mushrooms in Australia after a lunch event. Later, Brian Gregory discusses the Transport Reality Summit UK, challenging Net Zero Targets and advocating motorist freedoms with the Alliance of British Drivers. GUEST 1 OVERVIEW: Dr. Xanthé Mallett, a forensic anthropologist and criminologist, champions justice through DNA identification, bias combat in legal systems, and expert media analysis. https://www.newcastle.edu.au/profile/xanthe-mallett https://twitter.com/XantheMallett GUEST 2 OVERVIEW: Brian Gregory is the founder of the Alliance of British Drivers. He obtained his MA in Natural Sciences (Chemistry & Molecular Biophysics). He later obtained Masters of Science in Business Studies from Edinburgh University and worked 30 years in sales & marketing for a global titanium pigment producer. His heavy driving over a number of years in his career and the cavalier approach to road safety of officialdom rapidly became a consuming side-interest, resulting in me forming the Association of British Drivers in the early 1990s renamed The Alliance of British Drivers. Brian also developed a strong interest in studying climate and realised like health & safety overreach, climate also was going to be used as an additional stick with which to beat road users over the head.

She also collaborated with Anne McCaffrey on four science fiction novels, The Death of Sleep, Crisis On Doona, Treaty At Doona and The Ship Who Won, and wrote a solo sequel to The Ship Who Won entitled The Ship Errant. Nye coauthored the Visual Guide to Xanth with bestselling fantasy author Piers Anthony, and edited an anthology of humorous stories about mothers in science fiction, fantasy, myth and legend, entitled Don't Forget Your Spacesuit, Dear! She wrote eight books with the late Robert Lynn Asprin, License Invoked, a contemporary fantasy set in New Orleans, and seven set in Asprin's Myth Adventures universe: Myth-Told Tales (anthology), Myth Alliances, Myth-Taken Identity, Class Dis-Mythed, Myth-Gotten Gains, Myth Chief, and Myth-Fortunes. She also runs the two-day writers workshop at Dragon Con. She lives in the northwest suburbs of Atlanta, with her husband Bill Fawcett, a writer, game designer, military historian and book packager, and a black cat, Jeremy. Jody Lynn Nye became a Writers of the Future judge in 2016. “I chose to join the judging staff of the WotF Contest to help bring out the best of new writers. This is a forum that gives them the opportunity to be noticed in a greater market than they would normally enjoy. I feel that the ongoing competition makes writers work harder and reach farther than they might writing on their own. I'm fascinated to see where they take the field of science fiction.” —Jody Lynn Nye Find out more at: www.jodynye.com and www.mythadventures.net

Strong Arm Tactics is a humorous military science fiction novel, the first of The Wolfe Pack series. Nye wrote The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern, a non-fiction-style guide to the world of internationally bestselling author Anne McCaffrey's popular world. After Asprin's passing, she published Myth-Quoted and Dragons Deal (Ace Books), third in Asprin's Dragons series. Her latest books are View From the Imperium (Baen Books), a humorous military SF novel, an e-collection of cat stories, Cats Triumphant (Event Horizon), Dragons Run (fourth in the Dragons series) and Launch Pad, an anthology of science fiction stories co-edited with Mike Brotherton. She has spoken in schools and libraries around the north and northwest suburbs. In 2007 she taught fantasy writing at Columbia College Chicago.
This is NOT a Special Presentation episode! Scheduling conflicts prevented Mike and Ethan from bringing you the conclusion of Japan Month, for which we're very sorry. In its place we'd like to present the first episode of Ethan's new podcast, Biopsy of an Ogre! A podcast for kids who read the Xanth books, loved them, devoured them, and then grew up and were like “wait, that was really messed up!” For the first episode, longtime friend of the pod and children's writer Steph Cherrywell joins Ethan to discuss the seventh book, Dragon on a Pedestal, which begins a new generation in Xanth while still dragging along the previous generation's baggage.

The full team is assembled yet again! Tantz came up with the idea of having a look at fantasy worlds in fiction that have strong ties with the “real world” and how they function together. Her main example was the world of Harry Potter which has many strong connections to the real world and yet manages to stay very well hidden, which stretches plausibility a bit. The World of Casandra Clare's Mortal Instruments is similar in that regard, it's deeply tied to the mundane world and yet it stays hidden from it to a degree that isn't really possible. There are many other fantasy worlds where the connections with the real world are much more limited and that makes their hidden nature more plausible, i.e. Oz, Neverland, Narnia, Xanth, Wonderland… This was a fun topic to chat about! We covered a lot of ground. We even touched on the world of Hellraiser as a hidden fantasyland. To make your hidden world more believable, don't make it so that there are heaps of people who experience it all the time or have it constantly influence the real world because asking people to accept that no one knows about it is a bit silly. This week Gunwallace gave us a musical theme to COLD-BLOODED - Coils and coils of slithering intrigue, smooth scales kletter over dry sands, a powerful, muscular form wriggles through the shimmering desert heat towards the nuclear furnace of the hot, yellow sun. Days 8-10: As Cleo’s disappearance stretches past a week, police and forensics search around the Smith family house. But they have one message - Ellie and Jake are not suspects. We’ve seen police make these searches in other missing persons cases - including William Tyrrell, Daniel Morcombe and in the Claremont Serial Killings, and as this episode’s guest Criminologist Dr Xanthé Mallett explains, police always examine the family and those closest to them - to rule them out. As Ellie and Jake entered their second week without their little girl and Carnarvon reeled over her disappearance, the case of Cleo Smith brought back memories of the heartache in another small town, 1000 kilometres away, 40 years ago. Mick Murray is a stalwart in the small South West Town of Collie. He served at MP for Collie-Preston and has lived there all his life. He shares how the town dealt with the disappearance of schoolgirl Lisa Mott, who vanished 40 years ago and has never been found. Even though 40 years have passed, the town of Carnarvon reacted in a similar way to that of Collie - with a community united in support of the family, which eventually turned to suspicion when it was realised a criminal investigation was underway. The West Australian reporter Brianna Dugan recounts the tension she witnessed while in Carnarvon covering the story. In this episode, get an insight behind the scenes of a police investigation and an insight into what happens to a town when tragedy strikes. Join host Natalie Bonjolo, and guests Kristin Shorten, Brianna Dugan, Mick Murray and Dr Xanthé Mallett and they take you though days 8-10 in the search for Cleo Smith. C.J. FARLEY was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and grew up in Brockport, NY, with stops in Middle-earth, Xanth, Earthsea, and Narnia. Farley's biography Aaliyah: More Than a Woman was a national best seller. A former editor of the Harvard Lampoon and a former music critic for Time, Farley is a blogger, columnist and senior editor at the Wall Street Journal. Game World is Farley's first novel for young readers. Farley's newest book- Zero O'Clock: In early March 2020 in New Rochelle, New York, teenager Geth Montego is fumbling with the present and uncertain about her future. She only has three friends: her best friend Tovah, who's been acting weird ever since they started applying to college; Diego, who she wants to ask to prom; and the K-pop band BTS, because the group always seems to be there for her when she needs them (at least in her head). She could use some help now. Geth's small city becomes one of the first COVID-19 containment zones in the US. As her community is upended by the virus and stirred up by the growing Black Lives Matter protests, Geth faces a choice and a question: Is she willing to risk everything to fight for her beliefs? And if so, what exactly does she believe in? C.J. Farley captures a moment in spring 2020 no teenager will ever forget. It sucks watching the world fall apart. But sometimes you have to start from zero.

*** https://evangelionpodcast.com *** *** https://twitter.com/NeonPodcastEva1 *** A few days before recording Steve texted Michael, "I've been a little obsessed with Evangelion lately." Although this might be hoped to be baseline for hosts covering a very niche topic, here it represents a nice window of opportunity to record during a spike in the general level of knowledge available. Another stroke of good fortune has the Hideaki Annography topic as a sequence from Miyazaki's Nausicaä, Michael's favorite film from the director. This plugcast can't help but succeed! In such favorable conditions, this might be best seen as a recovery from recent challenges. The full schedule of bits are covered while keeping the runtime intact. Both main project and the Hideaki Annography make ground. Questionable material as we approach ground zero for fan service starring 14 year olds: skirted! So to speak. Highlights: - Is it this or the previous episode where the cousins fervently insist that they are not weirdos for liking something in the show? Never mind, that's going to reach drinking game levels going forward. - Yep, the same guys in a podcast episode with a story where teen Steve gets his grandma to buy him a Xanth book, which she discovers is "rife with horse sex". - Michael is on the far fringe of normal human height. Steve is up there too for a hāfu. They both gush with projection over Kaji being portrayed as a tall hunk. - The straight scoop on Anno working for Miyazaki on Nausicaä, and Michael's pleasant fantasy that they are good friends. Could be true!
