Tuesday's Book Club is a bi-weekly podcast series that dives into some of the most inspirational stories of all time, such as this one. The show is hosted by Nova Lorraine, founder of Raine Magazine, and her two co-hosts: Tobi Santagado and Barbara Donato. Together, on this week's episode of Tuesday's Book Club, they explore – The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed by Sara Gay Forden. On the morning of March 27, 1995, four quick shots cracked through Milan's elegant streets. Maurizio Gucci, heir to the fabulous fashion dynasty, had been ambushed, slain on the steps to his office by an unknown gunman. Two years later, Milan's chief of police entered the sumptuous palazzo of Maurizio's ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani—nicknamed “the Black Widow” by the press—and arrested her for the murder. Did Patrizia kill her ex-husband because his spending was wildly out of control? Did she do it because he was preparing to marry his mistress? Or is it possible Patrizia didn't do it at all? The Gucci story is one of glitz, glamour, and intrigue—a chronicle of the rise, near fall, and subsequent resurgence of a fashion dynasty. Beautifully written, impeccably researched, and widely acclaimed, The House of Gucci is a page-turning account of high fashion, high finance, and heartrending personal tragedy.

For this episode, I'm delighted to welcome back Andy Thê-Anh, an immensely talented stylist and fashion designer whom I interviewed in episode 70, when we analyzed Lululemon's successes. We also spoke with Andy in episode 80, when we discussed the Netflix documentary Wonder Boy, which presents the creative director of Balmain, Olivier Rousteing. In this episode, we continue our discussion and explore the evolution of the Gucci brand. The movie House of Gucci is a 2021 American biographical crime drama film directed by Ridley Scott, based on the 2001 book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed by Sara Gay Forden. Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, Jack Huston, Salma Hayek and Al Pacino also star in the movie. Hello Andy! Thank you for accepting my invitation to talk about the film and the Gucci brand. - What did you think of the movie? - How do you perceive the history and evolution of Gucci? - Tom Ford's arrival as artistic director propelled Gucci to the top of the big fashion houses in the 90s and 2000s; why do you think that is? - In 2004, Frida Giannini successfully took up the torch, and Alessandro Michele was appointed artistic director in 2015. Alessandro brings a whole new style that combines colour, androgyny, and contemporary romanticism. A real tour de force. What do you think? - Do you think Gucci today is avant-garde with its desire to eliminate the male and female genders? Where do you think the brand is going? Sara Gay Forden is the author ofHouse of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed,on which director Ridley Scott based his star-studded film. The Economist named House of Guccione of its best books of the year, adding that it reads “like a novel,” which it totally does. The book is much more comprehensive story about the Gucci legacy than the movie, but both culminate in the murder of Maurizio Gucci, former Gucci CEO and grandson of Guccio Gucci, founder of the iconic fashion house. On March 27, 1995, a hit man gunned Maurizio down in the foyer of his 4-story Renaissance-style office and apartment building. His ex-wife, Patrizia, had hired the gunman because Maurizio's impending marriage meant Patrizia's alimony would be cut in half.As the sub-title suggests, the Gucci saga is a morality play about the sad by-products of wealth, fame, and status. Not only does being rich and famous not make you happy, but sometimes, it can get you killed. A business journalist with a knack for digging out compelling stories, Sara covered Milan's fashion industry, landing stories about family-owned designer labels like Armani, Versace, and Prada in the Wall Street Journal, Women's Wear Daily, W, and Bloomberg News. She spent years researching and writing HoG, which came out 20 years ago and finally made its way to celluloid (okay, digital) in November, 2021. Today, Sara leads Bloomberg's reporting efforts on corporate influence and the scrutiny of major tech brands like Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google. Learn more about Sara on her website. This is my review of House of Gucci, which is a 2021 American biographical crime drama film directed by Ridley Scott, based on the 2001 book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed by Sara Gay Forden. The film follows Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) and Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver), as their romance transforms into a fight for control of the Italian fashion brand Gucci. Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, Salma Hayek, and Al Pacino also star. Scott wanted to make a film about the Gucci dynasty after acquiring rights to Forden's book in the early 2000s. The project languished for several years, with a number of directors and rumored actors being considered before Scott and Gaga became officially attached in November 2019. Much of the remaining cast joined the following summer, and filming began in Italy, lasting from February through May of 2021. Of course, he adds, “Halston was a genius in terms of design.”Sara Gay Forden, longtime fashion industry reporter, watched the larger-than-life trial of Patrizia Gucci for the hired killing of her ex-husband Maurizio Gucci, the last of the Gucci family to head the fashion house.
