“When we build this [position in the cannabis industry], we're building it for the future, you know, we're building it for the long haul, and we're taking a bold position on what we think the future will hold.” - Matthew CohenWelcome back to the To Be Blunt podcast! In this episode, Shayda Torabi welcomes Matthew Cohen, CEO of purejuana to talk about the journey to pioneering the spirits category in the industry, introducing a new need in the market, and how he kept the pure cannabis culture alive through innovation. [00:01 – 05:34] Introducing purejuana and Changing the Cannabis Game[05:35 – 16:46] Facing Raids and Pioneering the Spirits Category[16:47 – 30:19] Challenges of Entering the Category and Proper Positioning[30:20 – 39:28] Educating the Customers the Cannabis Experience Pathline[39:29 – 51:44] Mindful Marketing Towards Clarity for Clients[51:45 – 54:45] Food for Thought: How do you innovate while keeping the culture pure? Matthew Cohen co-founded Lively Spirits, a psychotropic spirits company leveraging nature's bounty of plants and fungi to craft euphoric beverages in 2020, and currently helms the Company as its Chief Executive Officer. A serial cannabis entrepreneur with nearly three decades rooted in the industry, Cohen got his start advocating for medical cannabis use among patients in the late 1990s, as California's medical marijuana program was in its infancy. In 2009, Cohen founded Northstone Organics, a farm-direct entity that became the first licensed cannabis producer in the state of California until it was abruptly raided and shut down by the DEA in 2011. As California's regulatory framework continued to emerge, Cohen went on to lead a number of successful cannabis ventures, including the Emerald Growers Association, a not-for-profit association of medical cannabis cultivators, business owners, and patients advocating for public policies that foster a more sustainable medical cannabis industry. He also helped lead Harborside Health Center, and he founded TRiQ, an industrial solutions provider focused on growing, processing and manufacturing cannabis with innovative technology, which included Cohen's own invention, the Vulcann50 industrial drying machine. Cohen's series of disruptive innovations is predated by a history of activism and patient care. Cohen was named one of the 100 most influential People in the Cannabis Industry by Cannabis Business Executive and has been featured in the New York Times, This American Life, Slate, The Week, Rolling Stone, and Frontline.Connect with MatthewVisit https://www.purejuana.com/ and follow him on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn @purejuanaofficial Shayda Torabi has been called one of the most influential Women in WordPress and now she's one of the women leading the cannabis reformation conversation building one of Texas' premier CBD brands. My cannabis career started early selling Santa Marta Gold from Colombia, and for many years I smuggled cannabis from Mexico to the US, and that's how I came to love Mexico and its people. Ultimately I stepped away from that part of the underground due to cartel threats and years later, after starting Harborside Health Center, I entered the legal industry. I began to get invited to speak at some of the early cannabis conferences in Latin America, and discovered a whole other cannabis scene being built by people who are interested in cannabis because they love the plant. When I visited Latin America last year, I was impressed by how many of the leading activists are women and two of them being my guests for this episode. My dear friends, Polita Pepper and Daniel Espinel-Ceruti join me to discuss what’s happening with cannabis reform in Latin America? We also touch on visionary plants, feminism, Indigenous culture; AND environmental restoration in Latin America.****www.CannaLatino.netwww.Cannativa.netPlease send all inquiries to; RadioFreeCannabis@SteveDeAngelo.com****Please kindly donate to the Last Prisoner Project; https://www.lastprisonerproject.org/****www.LibertyClothing.com/www.HomegrownCannabisCo.com/www.ShopHarborside.com/****Intro Music; Soul Majestic - Time Has Come; https://soulmajestic.com/

Most of the RED HOT HEALTHCARE podcast shows are about 30 minutes in length. However this one was a true 'hour of power' - and perhaps my most engaging yet. Because I was lucky enough to have secured an interview with Steve DeAngelo. Steve is an undisputed national leader and provocative visionary in the cannabis industry. With four decades of activism and advocacy, he’s inspired millions of individuals to not only learn about and benefit from cannabis, but also in influencing efforts to pass laws in local, state, and even foreign countries. He co-founded Harborside Health Center, the largest and most successful medical marijuana dispensary in the world. He's also the co-founder and president of the ArcView Group a company and investor network, which successfully introduces investors to the cannabis community. He also wrote a powerful and well-researched book, which completely transformed the way that many individuals, including myself, have come to view cannabis. It's called The Cannabis Manifesto - and I highly suggest you make this your next purchase and read. Steve has been featured in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, CNN, O’Reilly Factor, the Associated Press, Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, the BBC, the Discovery Channel, Fortune Magazine, Forbes Magazine, and many other major media outlets. In this show episode...Dr. Steve and Steve DeAngelo discuss some incredible dialogue on cannabis, including: The 'tainted' history and perpetuated lies (some eye-opening 'Whoppers') Why it is NOT an intoxicant Steve's unique history (From MLK, Freedom Riders, and Joining the 'Yippees'...to graduating Magna Cum Laude and going to Law School) Explaining its "ELEGANT & MAGICAL" impact on fighting cancer Why its legalization actually strengthens communities The story of success with Harborside Health and the ArcView Group And so much more...
Today on 420 Cloud Alex speaks with Stephen DeAngelo, founder, and CEO of Harborside Health Center. Stephen has long been on the front lines of cannabis policy reform since he was a child in fact. Besides being the Co-Founder and CEO of Harborside Health Center in Oakland, CA he is also the President of the ArcView Group. Formerly, DeAngelo helped lead Ecolution, Inc., which produced industrial hemp products and sold them to retail stores in all 50 states and 21 countries. He also played an integral role in the passage of Washington DC’s medical cannabis initiative. Furthermore, DeAngelo helped launch Steep Hill Labs – the industry’s first testing facility. Along with his brother, Andrew, Steve was the star of Discovery Channel’s Weed Wars TV series.
You know those rare moments in life where you get to meet a truly celebrated figure? Someone whose face you’ve seen online & in print? Someone who’s built up a worldwide following behind their work - and for one brief, shining moment you get to sit and chat with them? How often do these real life meetings ever live up to the hype? How often do we build up an impossible image of the celebrity in our own minds - that when we meet them in the flesh - it pales in comparison to the shining visage we’ve erected in our minds??? THIS was not the case as Anne & I had the great pleasure to find out - as we sat down for an hour to talk with the venerable Steve DeAngelo this past week. We spent weeks e-mailing back and forth with his camp, reading his book, watching his Youtube videos and appearances - so that we could get good and ready for this talk with a man who has been on the Activist & Advocacy front of the Cannabis world for some 40 years. For those not fully familiar with his work, Steve is the owner of the Harborside Health Center in Oakland, CA - the largest medical cannabis dispensary in the United States, serving over 200,000 patients. Fortune Magazine has named him one of the top 7 most powerful people inside the Marijuana Industry today. He’s written a terrific book about the history of cannabis, prohibition, and his own work inside this world - The Cannabis Manifesto. And is also the co-founder and president of the Arcview Group - a company aimed at introducing bright, promising cannabis entrepreneurs to angel investors who can fund their work. We speak to Steve about his path of Activism & Entrepreneurship (and why he sees them as mutually beneficial). About his own time & connection to our neck of the woods, inside the Emerald Triangle, and his own love of the culture we have built up here and the work of the legacy cannabis farmer. He shares his thoughts on the unique challenges confronting our community and the tools he sees as key to staying vital & financially solvent in the tumultuous time to come. He talks about the ways in which the Prohibition era programmed us toward a mentality that will not sustain us in the next iteration to come. And the shift he sees as critical to become viable in the new, legitimate marketplace. And he offers us guidance on how to continue to affect the current paradigm surrounding cannabis. Moving, as he says, “out of the shadows & into the Light.” And ultimately Steve guides back to the plant itself. To those amongst us who are called to work with and cultivate it. To use it reverently & as the healing, medicinal currency for which it is best suited. To caretake the plant so that it can caretake us and our families and communities, and usher in the type of world we wish to inhabit… We simply must be willing to sit & listen.. And trust that the way we will be made known. We are deeply honored and proud to bring you this powerful talk from a great man. Cheers. Some times you need to take a knee. Some days you need to go deep into your yin. The pause. To sit with the questions though the answers seem none-too-soon-in-coming. This week is such a week. Anne & I took this moment to ready ourselves for our big TALK with the intrepid Steve DeAngelo - the subject of next week's forthcoming episode. We'll be talking to Steve about his book - The Cannabis Manifesto - why he chose to pursue Entrepreneurship as his own path to Activism & what he's learned inside his 40+ years as a rabble-rouser, community organizer, leader & voice against Prohibition. Plus his work inside Harborside Health Center, in Oakland, CA, as well. As an added bonus to our loyal listeners, though this talk is scheduled to take place tomorrow, let us know if there's some burning questions you'd like to have answered. We've got our own list of go-to's and entreaties we'd love to hear more about, but this is a great opportunity to get some personal Q&A's fielded by one of the leading experts in the Cannabis field. Pop us a line over @ mendpodcast@gmail.com Mention Steve DeAngelo in the subject line. And be sure to get them into us by 10 AM (PST), Wednesday, October 4th. For now, may this give you an opportunity to catch up on some other listening, some back episodes you've yet to finish, or to start an awesome project all your own. Thanks, as ever, for being a part of this community with us. For being a voice. And for keeping the Conversation rolling. Cheers. The Cannabis Manifesto is both a call to action and a radical vision of humans' relationship with this healing but controversial plant. Steve DeAngelo, the founder of Harborside Health Center, the world's largest medical-cannabis dispensary, presents a compelling case for cannabis as a wellness catalyst that must be legalized. His view that there is no such thing as recreational cannabis use challenges readers to rethink everything they thought they knew about marijuana. The Cannabis Manifesto answers essential questions about the plant, using extensive research to fuel a thoughtful discussion about cannabis science and law, as well as its biological, mental, and spiritual
Steve DeAngelo is the co-founder and CEO of Harborside Health Center. He finds it exciting to be a cannabis activist since the numbers of people who are interested in the cannabis industry is increasing. DeAngelo believes that networking and creating relationships with other folks will create value to the space, not to mention, it makes the experience very engaging for the cannabis enthusiasts.
A message from Executive Director of Harborside Health Center-Steve DeAngelo As medical cannabis patients, we have all had to endure the fear and stigma imposed upon us by nearly seventy years of cannabis prohibition. Despite the recent legalization of medical cannabis in California and other states, the fear and stigma persist. Harborside Health Center is dedicated to healing the pain that stems from these destructive attitudes and feelings by providing a sensible alternative to the hysteria surrounding cannabis and by honoring you as a progressive and courageous force of change. We believe one way we may do that is to be conscious and respectful in all our interactions with our neighbors. Harborside Health Center believes each patient acts as an ambassador for the entire medical cannabis community. We want our fellow patients to feel cared for, to be recognized as important members of society, and to leave our facility inspired to be positive ambassadors for medical cannabis. Society is watching all of us to determine if medical cannabis is safe and sensible. If we dedicate ourselves to being such positive ambassadors for medical cannabis, our communities will begin to embrace us instead of being suspicious of us. The perception of medical cannabis will then be transformed, and the stigma associated with it will be eliminated. Harborside Health Center sees this as the key for achieving safe and legal access to medical cannabis for all suffering and sick Americans. We invite you to join us in building a kinder and more compassionate world, and thank you for your efforts.
A longtime activist and patient, Dani Geen is an expert in cannabis concentrates and the healthful aspects of ‘dabbing.’ As a member of the executive team at Harborside Health Center, Dani is privy to the latest products and methods of consumption on the market, and to the evolving science of cannabis medicines. Now ready to share what she’s learned, Dani hopes to remove the stigma of dabbing, and educate other patients and adult-use consumers on its many benefits compared to other methods of consumption. Because her parents were patients, Dani became familiar with cannabis as a medicine at an early age. In high school she began having severe pain issues and subsequently started studying the plant more seriously. In 2006 she was diagnosed with fibromyalgia while attending college for artist management and music tech studies. Lacking medical insurance and not wanting to rely on opiates, Dani turned to cannabis for relief, eventually discovering the powerful efficacy of extracts. In 2008, Dani began working at Harborside Health Center—the nation’s largest model cannabis dispensary, based in California—while finishing school. After a short time in Harborside’s Ombuds department welcoming and orienting patients, she was quickly recruited to the executive management team alongside executive director and co-founder, Steve DeAngelo. While traveling across the country with Steve, Dani was introduced to a titanium nail and Healthstone pipe. She discovered that the higher cannabinoid profiles of the concentrates used by this method gave her the edge she needed to combat her fibromyalgia and to quit smoking cigarettes. She’s now been pharmaceutical-free (and a non-smoker) for nearly six years. Dani is currently exploring the benefits of torch-less e-nails, and concentrates with and without terpenes, preferring live resins, ‘terp juice’ and solvent-less ‘rosin’ or hash oil to flowers. She’s also a knowledgeable and gentle guide for novice dabbers. “Start small and work your way up,” she says. “Make sure you stay hydrated and are in a comfortable area for your first time.” She can be reached at danig@harborsidehealthcenter.com.

Steve DeAngelo has been an activist for as long as he can remember. Coming from a self-described “Civil Rights Family,” he even attended Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington as a 5 year old. When he discovered cannabis at age 13, he felt like he truly found his life’s calling. He ‘joined the revolution’ at age 16 when he banded up with the Youth International Party, and spent the next few decades standing up for his principles as an activist. By the mid 2000s, Steve founded the dispensary paragon Harborside Health Center, and by 2010, had founded the ArcView group to guide the burgeoning legal cannabis industry, thus firmly establishing himself as one of the greatest and most effective advocates for cannabis legalization of all time. When Steve DeAngelo talks, people listen. With us, he shares his thoughts on California’s push for proper regulation, as well as his thoughts on the industry and movement as a whole.
