This episode of the Podiatry Legends Podcast discusses the often-overlooked benefits of buying an established podiatry business. Tyson Franklin and Jonathan Small explore why acquiring a practice could be a game-changing move for aspiring podiatrists. If you're interested in growing your career without the typical start-up headaches, this episode offers practical advice on how to make a successful transition into practice ownership. Ten Key Takeaways from the Episode Buying an established practice gives you immediate cash flow. Systems for patient management, billing, and operations are already in place. You inherit an existing patient base, saving time and effort on marketing. With a profitable business, you have a better chance of securing a loan. Buying an existing practice reduces the risk of starting a business from scratch. Established businesses have learned from past mistakes, which helps mitigate risk. You gain the opportunity to enhance and improve systems that are already working. Business owners often lack business training, and buying a practice gives you more support. Acquiring a practice helps avoid the common challenges of building from the ground up. You can focus on growth and profitability rather than foundational challenges. When the New York Times declared it was “the end of work as we knew it” for Gen X, it did not feel fine. The story called the generation obsolete, irrelevant, and even likened them to candlestick makers in the age of electricity. Seriously? The article sparked a firestorm, prompting host Jonathan Small to write a viral Substack response that only raised the temperature. Now, Dana DuBois—fellow Gen X-er, writer, alt-rock aficionado—joins the show to talk about why the article sparked so much rage, what it got dead wrong, and how Gen X is not just surviving but reinventing midlife on their own terms.  Read Jon's response on Substack here.  Read the original NYT story here. Small barks a laugh, and says that he emptied the gems into the river when he realised that they were going to catch him, and says that the only people with a right to the treasure and the men that make up "the Sign of the Four."Holmes then presses Small to start his story. He was born into a poor farmer family in Worcestershire. He joined the British army after getting into some trouble with a girl, and was sent to India. After leaving training, his leg was bitten off by a crocodile, and was forced to leave the forces. After recovering, his superior got him a job on a plantation looking over the workers. His boss was kind, but soon a revolt started in India, and the workers turned against the masters and Small was forced to flee to Agra. In Agra he joined a volunteer corps set up in an old fort. He served here as a guard, and had two Punjabi men under his command. One night, the two ambushed him, and told him to be either with or against them. When he agreed, they told him about the treasure, and told him that a man was coming that night to Agra. When the man arrived, they attacked the man with the chest, and hid both the body and the treasure after making a tally of the jewels inside. Sadly for the men, the body was soon found, and they were all arrested and sent to work camps, and after a while were sent to the Andaman Islands. Here, Small was given a bit more freedom, and became close to the doctor. He over heard the doctor and the army guards playing cards, and heard two of them slowly lose more and more money, Morstan, and Sholto.Small then told the two about the treasure, and said that if they could go and get the treasure and help the members of the Sign of the Four escape, then they could have their fair share of the treasure too. Sholto goes to collect the Treasure, and then doesn't return... Small knows that he has stolen the Agra Treasure, and vows to get his revenge. He soon came into contact with one of the Natives, and helped heal him back to health after being wounded. He soon told the man, Tonga, of the Treasure, and asked to help him escape in his canoe. The two escape, and after a long while, make their way to London. Small finds out about Sholto, and goes to investigate; Sholto passes away when he see's Small's face in the window. Small then employs a man inside the house to give him information about the Treasure. One day he hears that it was found, and he takes Tonga with him to take it back. They get the treasure, Sholto is taken out, and then Holmes' chase began.SEO stuff that I really don't want to have to do...Join me for another immersive narration of this classic detective story from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

My guest for Episode #301 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Jonathan Small, an award-winning journalist, editor, podcast host, and producer based in Los Angeles. Episode page with video and more As president of Strike Fire Productions, he has built a diverse career that spans magazine editing at top publications—from Child Magazine to Maxim—and pioneering roles in digital media and podcasting. Known for his candid storytelling and willingness to embrace risk, Jon has transformed professional setbacks into defining career moments, including leaving a cushy executive role to reinvent himself in a rapidly changing media landscape. He's also the podcast of a podcast called "Write About Now." Jon's also the author of a book with the same title. In this episode, Jon recounts his bold decision to leave a high-flying magazine career in New York for a risky, low-paying production role in Los Angeles—a move that, despite its initial challenges (like parting with his beloved cat and facing financial uncertainty), ultimately redefined his career. He shares insights into the evolution of the publishing industry, the shift from print to digital media, and how even seemingly disastrous mistakes can pave the way for reinvention, new opportunities, and personal growth. Jon also delves into his extensive experience as a writer and interviewer, offering practical advice on common pitfalls in writing and the art of “show, don't tell.” He emphasizes the importance of embracing imperfect first drafts, the necessity of reading widely to hone one's craft, and the value of authentic conversation in podcasting—whether as a host or a guest. Throughout the episode, listeners are treated to vivid anecdotes from his career, tips for leveraging AI in writing, and reflections on how vulnerability and genuine curiosity fuel both compelling storytelling and effective interviews. Questions and Topics: What is your favorite mistake? What prompted you to leave magazine editing for a role in film production? Did you consider returning to New York after the move? What was your role at the movie production company? What are the most common mistakes rookie writers make? Can you provide an example that illustrates the difference between showing and telling in writing? What tips do you have for becoming a more effective interviewer? Based on your experience, what advice would you offer to guests on a podcast?

Holmes says that he believes him, but that he will need to provide a full honest account of the Agra Treasure, and how he came to England, and how he came into Bartholomew's room. Small agrees, but curses the treasure, saying that it brings nothing but misery to those who possess it. Watson is dropped off at Vauxhall bridge with the Agra Treasure, and with a police guard, heads to Miss Morstan's home. She is happy to see Watson, but seems a little upset and aloof when receiving the treasure. Watson is likewise unhappy, and over does his excited performance when handing the chest over. He tells her about the boat chase, and she seems terrified at the danger she put Watson and Holmes into. Watson proceeds to open the chest, and when he lifts the lid, they find the crate empty. Watson lets out a "Thank God" and confesses his love to miss Morstan saying that the treasure would have separated them. She reciprocates his love. He tells Watson that he has figured out that the pearls have something to do with Major Sholto, who, he discovered died the same week that Miss Morstan started receiving them. He figures that Sholto's heir knows something, and wants to compensate for it. When Miss Morstan arrives, the trio get into the cab, Holmes making sure to take his revolver with him. In the cab, miss Morstan provides Holmes with some additional papers full of allusions to her father and Major Sholto's time together. On one of the papers is a strange symbol, a small red cross, the words "the sign of the four," and the names Jonathan Small, Mahomet Singh, Abdullah Khan, Dost Akbar. When they arrive at the theatre, they are approached by a man who asks for Miss Morstan, and he asks her to confirm that Holmes and Watson are not police. He then takes them to another cab, and on mounting, takes them on a winding, twisting journey across London. When they finally arrive at their destination, they are greeted by a man at the door, and a young child-like voice from within.

She joins host Jonathan Small to talk about why she gave up her  carefree, bohemian life to become a cloistered nun, what life was like inside the monastery, her views on celibacy and isolation from the outside world, and the similarities between her experience and those of cult members.  I have a new book coming out and would love for you to be part of my Book Launch Squad. Jonathan Small joins Tyson E Franklin on the Podiatry Legends Podcast to discuss a pervasive myth in the professional world: the idea that a business's location is the critical determinant of its success and fee structure. Jonathan debunks this, suggesting that the true driver of success is the business owner's mindset. He shares insights from his extensive experience, including the notion that prioritising personal happiness and aligning one's practice with personal values are more important than the business's geographical location. The discussion covers various examples, from restaurants in remote locations charging premium prices to successful businesses thriving despite being in supposedly unfavourable areas. Jonathan emphasises the importance of marketing, value proposition, and the ability to adapt and evolve a business according to changing times and personal growth. Tyson and Jonathan also share personal stories of overcoming discrimination, prejudice, and financial challenges, underscoring the importance of resilience, self-belief, and the impact of one's surroundings on personal and professional development. They highlight the necessity of surrounding oneself with positive influences and continuously striving for self-improvement and professional excellence. The episode serves as a reminder that limitations are often self-imposed. With the right mindset and strategic approach, podiatrists can create thriving businesses that reflect their values and goals, regardless of location. 276 - Post Conference Time Blocking

Podiatry Legends Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 3, 2023 10:39

Why is post-conference time blocking such an important topic? Two weeks ago, I was at our national conference in Brisbane, and after the conference, quite a large number of podiatrists posted how good the event was on social media, but it got me thinking; I wonder how many have taken action on what they've learnt since returning home. How many have set time aside to review their notes and put together a game plan or plan of action?  Taking action after a conference, workshop, or seminar is more complicated than you'd like to think.  What tends to happen is you get home over the weekend, usually on a Sunday, and the next day you'll head into work full of enthusiasm, only to realise you have patients booked solid for most of the day.  Don't worry; you still have your lunch break to review your notes and start making plans.  But just before lunch, you receive an email from your Accountant, and they need you to call them urgently. By the time you phone them and finish eating your lunch, lunchtime is over. Once again, you're not too concerned because you have nothing scheduled after work, so you can read through your notes at the end of the day when it's quiet, and there won't be any interruptions. However, by the time 5.30 pm comes around, you're mentally tired, so you tell yourself, it's been a long day; a night off will be good for me and give me a chance to recharge my battery; however, this pattern repeats itself on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and before you know it the week is over, and it's the weekend. Weekend Off You decided to take the weekend off, because you've been busy all week and didn't relax last week because of the conference, and you deserve the break. In addition to that, if you have a family, you cannot neglect them two weekends in a row. One week leads to two weeks; before you know it, the month has passed, and you have not taken action or implemented one new idea from the conference.  Does any of this sound familiar? I must admit I repeated this process over and over again for years, and it frustrated the hell out of me because I knew I had the best intentions.  I would get so annoyed with myself, but then I discovered the solution, Post-Conference Time Blocking.  Time Blocking If you've never used time blocking before, you should, and if you're not sure what time blocking is, it's the easiest way to get things done. Time blocking is about dedicating specific blocks of time to particular tasks, and your goal is to perform and complete those tasks within the given time frame. If it's not finished, you immediately go to your calendar and block out more time on another day. Time Blocking is far better and more productive than having a daily to-do list with no specific time frames. What's the Difference with Post-Conference Time Blocking? It's just like standard time blocking; you block out a specific amount of time to perform particular tasks, in this case, review your conference notes and create a game plan; however, post-conference time blocking is scheduled into your calendar before leaving for the conference, not afterwards. If you try to do it after the conference, it just won't happen. Things will come up, and life will get in the way.  Therefore the earlier you can block out this time in your calendar, the better, and the longer the conference or workshop, the more time you should allow. For example, if I attend a solid three-day event, I will allow one full day to review my notes and create a game plan or plan of action. You may think you cannot afford to take off another full day but believe me; it will pay dividends long-term.  If I attend a one-day event, I may block out three to four hours; if it is a 2-hour evening seminar, I may only block out an hour the next day.  Here's a great tip to consider: Make post-conference time blocking part of your conference booking procedure: Pay for Conference Tickets. Schedule a Post-Conference Time Block in your calendar.  Book Accommodation. Book Airfares. If you make it part of your conference booking procedure, it will never be overlooked, and if you have an assistant who makes your travel arrangements, tell them they must block out post-conference time in your calendar. There should be no exceptions.  Why Not Stay An Extra Day - This is what I do.  Another idea you may find helpful, and this is what I do; you can stay an extra day at your accommodation and use this day to review all your notes and create all your plans of action.  Of course, I don't sit in the room the whole day. I will leave the room for breakfast, lunch and dinner and depending on the weather, I may fit in a swim, but I try to keep my breaks short.  If you have the time to do this, you should, but if money is a little tight, head home but make sure you've pre-planned your post-conference time blocks before you leave.  Just Do One Thing Another critical point is not to try to implement everything you learnt at a conference all at once, no matter how good the information is. Instead, review your notes, pick the top three ideas or takeaways you want to work on and rank them one, two and three.  Then, start creating your game plan or plan of action around number one. If you try to implement everything simultaneously, you will get overwhelmed and achieve nothing.  When you're at work, stay focused on the number one activity, and as soon as it's completed, move on to the next most important item. After completing the top three ideas or takeaways, you can review your list and find more tasks.  It's also a good idea to meet with your team as soon as possible so you can share your top three takeaways and what you've decided to work on first because you're going to want their involvement.   Take Action Attending conferences and workshops is an absolute must for your career and your business, but you must take action on what you've learnt; otherwise, you'll end up with folders full of notes that will sit there and go to waste.  In July, Jonathan Small and I will run a two-day Work Smarter, Not Harder workshop in Brisbane on the 21st and 22nd. Throughout the two days, everyone attending will leave with a list of business takeaways that will change their financial future, but before everyone leaves, we will make sure they leave with that ONE big idea they will be working on first.  NEXT EVENT If you want to recession-proof your podiatry business, consider attending the Work Smarter, Not Harder event I am doing with Jonathan Small on the 21st and 22nd of July.   It has been scientifically proven that we tend to overvalue our losses and undervalue our wins, which can affect our future decision-making. The good news is that people usually only remember your wins, not your losses, and Richard Branson is a perfect example.    My guest, Dr Jesse Green, is no stranger to the Podiatry Legends Podcast. He has been a guest on episodes 144 and 200, and I've asked him to come back to talk about why people focus so much on their losses and not enough on their wins.  Dr Jesse Green runs Practice Max, one of Australia's largest Dental Coaching Organisations and hosts the Savvy Dentist Podcast. This episode is a dual episode that Jesse and I decided to use on both shows.  In this episode, we discuss the following: A new word - PISSOFFEDNESS.  Why do we over-value our losses in life yet undervalue our day-to-day wins?  The reason people keep on hanging on to losses is that they don't want to admit that they've made a mistake. And it will hold them back from making the next decision! A good decision can still lead to a poor outcome. So what can you do in this situation? Expect that some of your decisions will be wrong the further you try to predict the outcome. What will happen in a week is much easier than what will happen in twelve months.  CAPACITY PLANNING - Using numbers to make your decisions based on past decisions and future predictions. You're working on the balance of probability.  So if you've had a few things go wrong and are a little bit 'gun-shy', what can you do to get back to making decisions and moving towards more wins? Remember, every big business you know of today … once started as a 'small' business. And every big business still makes mistakes as the company grows larger. When things go wrong, instead of just saying I knew that was going to happen and not learning from it, document what you learned in a BRAIN BOOK or journal and then use this information in the future.  The people who do well in their business practice over-value their wins and under-value their losses as a general habit. MATHEMATICAL FORMULA FOR SERENDIPITY - More Swings = More Hits.  The longer you take to start something, the less chance you have of actually doing it.  You can connect with Dr Jesse Green via his website https://savvydentist.com/, and if you have any questions about this episode, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com.  Business Coaching  Are you looking for a Podiatry Business Coach who thinks differently and has a proven track record of helping podiatrists excel in business? Estelle Humphris is a South Australian podiatrist who took up positions in country health, wound care and routine podiatry upon graduation. As time passed, she felt her knowledge of biomechanics and gait was slowly slipping away.   When she asked for help from senior mentors, she felt they were overwhelmed by the enormity of the subject and were unclear on where to start. Mentors told her to watch people walk in her local shopping mall and watch every client in the clinic. Estelle wasn't satisfied with this and made it her personal goal to work on her gait analysis skills and constantly ask her seniors questions on specific cases. She then thought: "how good would it be if she could put everything she had learnt into one resource for herself and others to reflect and learn from"...and so The Gait Movement online course was born. What else did we discuss on this episode: Taking a Gap Year between years two and three and living in Germany. Discovering she was Dyslexic in her third year and understanding why she had to work so much harder than everyone else. Modifying how she learns.  Being scared to ask questions as a new graduate and not wanting to be seen as stupid.  How close she got to leaving podiatry.  Imposter syndrome.  Estelle used to find initial consultations created a lot of anxiety because she didn't know what foot problem would come through the door until she learnt that all she needed to do was get through the first appointment. After the first appointment, she had time to prepare for the review appointment.  The Gait Movement Online Course is designed for new and recent graduates or podiatrists who may have lost some of their biomechanical and gait analysis skills. Suppose someone in your family needed medical treatment. Would you be happy if the treating doctor only gave them limited treatment options because they had a limited skill set, or would you prefer the doctor explained ALL the available treatment options, even if it meant they had to refer them to another doctor or specialist?   This is the basis of The LOVED ONE's Test.  Jonathan Small has appeared on this podcast nine times. I keep inviting him back because he delivers relevant, practitioner-driven content every time, and The LOVED ONE's Test is no different. Building trust with your patients through referrals, don't be afraid of losing patients. Suppose you cannot treat a particular problem. In that case, it is better for the profession if you can refer them to another podiatrist that can treat the problem instead of referring them to a Physiotherapist or General Practitioner.  If you have any questions about this episode or Jonathan's Work Smarter, Not Harder 2-Day Workshop in 2023, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com. Jonathan Small is the owner of Health First Foot & Gait Clinic in Southam, UK, and today we're talking about the importance of paying attention to online reviews.  Some years ago, Jonathan was the victim of a scathing 1-Star review, which said, Disgusting Man, Ladies Beware, and it wasn't until someone else pointed it out to him that he knew about it.  "There are a lot of online review platforms and you need to be paying attention".  If you get a negative review, use it as motivation to get more positive reviews. It's not the end of the world, but it can be more damaging if you don't respond. Amazon Amazone is one of the world's largest companies, and it only has a 1.8-star review.  51 % 1-Star 31% 5-Star Only 18% of their reviews are in the middle (2-4 star reviews). Therefore it's clear that reviews are polarising, it's usually very good or very bad.  Do More Reviews Yourself You should make it a habit of writing more reviews yourself because it will keep reviews fresh in your mind, which means you are more likely to talk about reviews with your patients.  "It's up to you to manage each platform because it's out there for all to see."
