Harvesting Happiness
Joy as a Practice: Happiness as Radical Resistance with Erica Brown

Harvesting Happiness

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 4, 2026 38:52

Conscious Joy Activism invites us to reframe our emotional lives, reminding us that joy as an active, intentional practice is a verb. In a world fraught with systemic challenges, happiness as resistance is a radical act. The privilege of being able to protest underscores our mutual responsibility. This intersection of positive psychology politics proves that our profound interconnectedness was never a "woo-woo" concept, but a tangible tool for collective survival. Ultimately, embracing this mindset serves as a powerful form of political anxiety relief, transforming personal well-being into a catalyst for societal change. To discuss the current state of affairs at a grassroots level, Harvesting Happiness Podcast host Lisa Cypers Kamen welcomes Erica Brown, the Community Engagement Coordinator at Radio Kingston and a positive-change advocate. Erica describes the joy that occurs when we come together in community to transform outrage into positive action. She shares strategies for mobilizing those who haven't yet been activated, creating a bottom-up solution to the top-down issues affecting our communities. Like what you're hearing? CHRISTINA LOYA Mattie Rhodes Public Historian & Community Engagement Coordinator- The Museum of Kansas City is proud to announce that Connecting Cultures Across Kansas City: The Hand-in-Hand Folk Art Collection is opening to the public on Friday, June 12 at the Museum. This exhibition is organized by the Mattie Rhodes Center and presented in collaboration with The Museum of Kansas City. The Hand-in-Hand Folk Art Collection was started by Alice Ann Biggerstaff (1924–2007) and later donated to Mattie Rhodes. A Kansas City native, Alice Ann was an artist who worked for more than three decades at Hallmark Cards. Upon retirement, she moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she continued collecting artwork and created a vibrant, welcoming home.Showcasing more than 150 rarely seen works of folk art from across the globe, with a particular focus on pieces from Latin America and the American Southwest, Connecting Cultures Across Kansas City explores how folk art reflects shared values and human experiences across communities and cultures. Through cultural expression, identity, and time-honored traditions, these works bridge local communities and global traditions. In this exhibit, you will encounter works by multigenerational artisan families, including the exquisite ceramic traditions of the Aguilar and Blanco families of Oaxaca, as well as the whimsically carved wooden animals of the Alvarez and Rodríguez families of the American Southwest. Also included are countless works created by artisans whose names were never recorded or have been lost to history. For centuries, the contributions of people of color, women, and other marginalized groups have too often been misattributed or erased, even as their work has shaped cultural identity and community memory. Connecting Cultures invites viewers to honor both the named and the unnamed makers, and to consider how artistry survives through generations by blending ancient techniques with cultural storytelling, acting as a living link to history, identity, and resilience. The exhibition also emphasizes the vital role of collecting as a form of cultural stewardship—preserving stories, supporting artists, and ensuring that meaningful objects remain accessible to future generations. An installation inspired by Alice Ann's home in Santa Fe will be featured, alongside selected pieces of her clothing, offering insight into the personal vision behind the collection. Folk art encompasses a wide range of handmade objects created for daily life, ritual, and celebration, often using region-specific materials and techniques. These works embody lived experience and serve as carriers of cultural knowledge, helping sustain identity across generations. Whether a colorful and imaginative alebrije—a fantastical creature rooted in Mexican folk traditions—a giant painted wooden crocodile from Santa Fe, or an intricately crafted ceramic Tree of Life, these pieces are gentle reminders that beauty and imagination have existed for thousands of years and will endure long after the item itself is gone. Tickets and more information are available at www.gospelisadrag.com The show is set in the fictional town of Squibbtown, Missouri, where a stuffy town hall meeting is suddenly crashed by the fabulous Gloria- backed by her stellar choir - ready to sing and speak her truth. The show is described as an “InfoMusical,” and “a unique, rollicking, interactive experience filled with more music, frivolity, inspiration, education and improvisation than one ever thought possible” promising original songs and new arrangements of traditional hymns. The musical stars popular performance artist Tajma Stetson and features many notable local performers in the ensemble. The Director is Kevin Bogan with Musical Direction by Trevor Smith. The Arts Asylum was founded in 2011 to provide artists of all mediums a safe place to create and continues that mission today through their emphasis on new works, classics reimagined, and educational outreach. Rapp is an award-winning producer and writer who makes his Arts Asylum debut with the play. “It feels like one of the most important personal works I have done up to this point in my career.” says Rapp. “Our show points out that there are more commonalities than differences between us,” adds Stetson. “We hope people will make new friends, hear some catchy songs and have their spirits uplifted!” JUNE 12-15 and 19-22 CONTACT: ARTS ASYLUM THEATER Jerry Rapp 824 E Meyer Blvd 323-354-0115 Kansas City, MO 64131 jr@jerryrapp.com

WDIY Lehigh Valley Health Network Wind Creek Event Center Michael Bernadyn of RE/MAX Real Estate Molly’s Irish Grille & Sports Pub Banko Beverage Company Blog: The Realities of Reentry – A Recap of the Podcast Understanding Reentry Reentry is the process by which formerly incarcerated individuals reintegrate into society after serving their time. While release from prison might seem like the end of a sentence, for many, it marks the beginning of another battle—finding employment, securing housing, and avoiding recidivism. Jose Rivera, Community Engagement Coordinator at United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, explains how reentry was once a non-existent term. Instead, individuals were labeled “ex-cons” or “felons,” limiting their opportunities. While the language has evolved, the systemic barriers remain overwhelming for many returning citizens. The Challenges of Reentry Dr. Michael Pittaro, Director of Corrections for Northampton County, highlights the recidivism rate of nearly 65% in the U.S., emphasizing that many individuals return to the same communities where they faced prior struggles. Without intervention, they encounter the same environments, influences, and hardships that led to their incarceration. Attorney David Ritter sheds light on pre-trial detention and bail reform, explaining that individuals can spend 90 to 180 days in jail before their trial simply because they cannot afford bail. This extended detention causes job loss, housing instability, and financial hardship, making reintegration even more difficult after release. Another major obstacle is the role of parole and probation officers. Some officers serve as mentors, helping individuals access resources, while others take a more punitive approach, increasing the likelihood of reoffending. Rivera stresses that a supportive parole officer can make all the difference in successful reentry. Employment and Housing: Critical Factors in Reentry Success Securing employment after incarceration is a major challenge. Dr. Pittaro explains how background checks and job applications with felony-related questions create barriers, despite Pennsylvania's “Ban the Box” initiative. While this law prevents employers from immediately disqualifying applicants based on criminal history, employers still have access to background checks and often reject qualified applicants. Housing is another pressing issue. Many landlords deny applications from formerly incarcerated individuals, making it difficult to secure stable living conditions. Even those who find employment struggle with rising housing costs and parole restrictions that limit where they can live. David Ritter emphasizes that parole conditions often require a stable address, but without accessible housing, securing parole itself becomes an obstacle. Solutions That Are Making a Difference Despite the challenges, several initiatives in the Lehigh Valley are making strides toward improving reentry outcomes: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): A tool used in reentry programs to help individuals recognize and change negative thought patterns. The Reentry Coalition: A network of organizations collaborating to support individuals reentering society. Specialty Courts (Drug Court & Mental Health Court): Programs aimed at rehabilitation rather than incarceration, diverting nonviolent offenders toward treatment-based solutions. One-Stop Reentry Centers: Efforts are underway to establish centralized locations where individuals can access job training, mental health services, housing assistance, and legal aid in one place. While these programs are promising, expanding housing access, providing employer incentives, and improving parole officer training remain key priorities in reducing recidivism. Final Thoughts Reentry is not just about the individual—it's a community issue. When individuals successfully reintegrate, crime rates decrease, families remain intact, and communities grow stronger. However, employment barriers, housing restrictions, and punitive parole policies must be addressed to create long-term success. This episode of Lehigh Valley with Love underscores the need for policy changes, stronger community support, and a shift in public perception—from punishment to rehabilitation.

How do you get people to come outside if they’ve never done it before? Hint: it starts with meeting people where they’re at. If you like talking to people, making connections, and telling stories, then today’s episode is for you! Xiomara Batin: Xiomara Batin is the Outreach and Marketing Manager at GirlVentures, an outdoor educational non profit based in Oakland, California. Xiomara has worked in a variety of educational institutions and non profit organizations with authentic engagement and genuine allyship at the center. Supporting communities that have had limited access to outdoor spaces due to historical barriers, is an integral area of importance to Xiomara and she feels passionate about being involved in advocacy in a variety of capacities. Find GirlVentures on Instagram @girlventures Erika Granadino: Erika was born in El Salvador and raised in the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area with her mother and sister. She graduated from Humboldt State University with a degree in Environmental Management and Protection, with a focus on Natural Resource Planning. For the past 4 years she has worked as an interpreter for California State Parks and the last year as the Community Engagement Coordinator for the North Coast Redwoods District, which has allowed her to exercise her passion and commitment to conservation and community engagement. Her favorite part about the work is getting to facilitate interpretive programs that connect people to parks, providing access, information, and inclusivity to their public lands. Promoting these places through interpretive programs gives hope that visitors will want to become stewards of these natural places, too. She feels lucky to be able to provide opportunities for people to connect with nature, helping them find meaning in what they are experiencing. In her downtime she enjoys cooking, going out to eat at a good restaurant, or getting some exercise. However, nothing compares to a good scenic hike on a sunny day. Find her on Instagram @erkbea
