One of the hardest things for driven people to do, is to learn when to adapt and persevere and when to move on. Today's guest shares a few stories about how he learned those lessons. As a young kid, he found an early passion for Soccer. It wasn't tallent alone though, he put in the work; hours on the field in practice. Through the sport, he learned a lot about himself; he liked to see and understand the big picture. The perfect spot to get that view was Goalie! That dedication and commitment eventually turned into Olympic prep, which further led to an invite to the Ivy League to play at Brown! On Senior day, his parents drove 14 hours to see their son play; only to see him on the bench, in favor of a younger, taller, Freshman Goalie. He was gutted. Contemplating leaving the team, he reached out to an athlete friend for guidance; the advice was simple, talk to the coach, see what he could do, needed to do, to be on and in the team. Received well, he followed that guidance, did his part, and was eventually rewarded with opportunity when the team needed him. A number of years into professional life, working in the natural products industry, he was given a huge promotion from managing 1 line of business to 15. The workload was crushing. Days stretched into weeks, and into months. He came home every night drained. It was literally killing him. With a Mortgage, Wife, and two daughters, a driven person doesn't just quit, but, as he noted, "If you can't take care of yourself, you can't take care of anyone else". For him and his family, he needed to find the right vein for him. With a background in startups, investing and mentoring, a slight pivot from Natural Supplements to the nascent Cannabis Industry was his next eon. With the synergies and success that followed, it proved to be the correct choice with the huge impact his company has had on the Cannabis Industry. Please enjoy the Founders Journey of Patrick Rea, Co-Founder of CanopyBoulder. Professional Summary: In 2013, Patrick founded CanopyBoulder, a seed-stage, mentorship-driven business accelerator and investment fund focused on data, fintech, software, and IoT in the cannabis industry as well as hemp/CBD businesses. For five years, Patrick was a consistent presence on The Arcview Group's selection committee and in 2014 acted as Executive Editor for ArcView's State of the Legal Marijuana Market report. He frequently runs panels at industry events, and has served as a judge for multiple Marijuana Business Conference & Expo Pitch Slams. Patrick graduated with two degrees from Brown University where he played Division I soccer, and resides in Boulder, Colorado with his wife and two daughters. Patrick embraces all that Colorado has to offer to build relationships with his investors and portfolio CEOs, often inviting them to join him trail running, hiking, mountain biking, and snowboarding in the foothills outside of Boulder. Episode Summary: Before Eric Schnell was actually Eric, he attended Woodstock… in utero. Raised by his hippie parents in the Boston area; his early years were in an Ashram. The respect for our bodies, animals, and the Earth, were values embedded early, and consistently, in his life. Seeds for becoming an entrepreneur were planted early on too: Once, as a punishment, his Mom withheld allowance; his 8 year old self was so upset by this, he vowed to never be dependent on anyone else for money again. During his time at Northeastern, Eric turned what started as promoting fraternity parties, into a $200,000/year income, all before graduating! Steve DeAngelo — who is is nothing short of a cannabis industry icon, having co-founded Harborside, Steep Hill Labs, Arcview Group, and the NCIA — recently returned to the Ganjapreneur.com Podcast for an interview with our host TG Branfalt. In this interview, Steve shares the experiences that led to his entry to the cannabis movement and eventually the professional cannabis space. From his earliest advocacy efforts, toking up in front of the White House at the annual 4th of July smoke-in, to the modern industry's launch following California's historic medical cannabis legalization, Steve shares the inspiration behind Harborside and explains how the birth of that now-iconic business led also to the founding of Steep Hill Labs (the nation's first cannabis testing lab), the National Cannabis Industry Association (the industry's first trade organization), and eventually the Arcview Group. He also shares stories of grappling with the reality of doing business in a post-prohibition landscape despite the thousands of individuals still locked away for cannabis crimes, and explains his plan for ending cannabis imprisonment on a global scale. Let's get to know Codie Sanchez in today’s fun and insightful episode as she lives on the leading edge of venture capital and entrepreneurship. She is an investor, speaker and business builder. She is a partner at Cresco Capital Partners, one of the first PE funds in the legalized cannabis space. From Great To Greater Codie is a former mutual fund manager at Goldman Sachs and a consultant to Facebook, Apple, and Amazon. She earned her MBA from Georgetown University and received her Ph.D. from FGV in Brazil. Given her credentials, she is upfront about not staying long with her previous company nor working in the marijuana industry. “After a while, everybody has to graduate from that realm and go do something in the world. I was feeling like it was time.” - Codie Sanchez She started investing in cannabis privately until she saw the actual numbers and the industry growth potential. Aside from being a Venture Capitalist, she is an active advocate in lobbying for federally funded marijuana use research. “We do a lot of stuff with Vets and see them come back from the war and have PTSD. You get them on opioids or cannabis and see the changes in their lives. Its kind of contagious at some point.” - Codie Sanchez Lobbying at Washington Codie recounts her story at Washington D.C. to Lochhead as she says that Cannabis is categorized as Schedule 1—drugs that have no medicinal benefit and are highly addictive. Lochhead also shares his understanding of the issue. He says that since there is no federally funded research on the benefits, risks, problems, applications and use cases on cannabis, the country might be missing out on its potential. “So many of them don’t know about cannabis. They know what we used to think about it, like in the 70s, the 80s, but they still don’t know the fact that this is a multi-million dollar industry.” -Codie Sanchez, on meeting with legislators 40,000 Different Uses of Mary Jane Thanks to people like Codie, more established people are joining the cannabis movement. For instance, there is the UCLA Cannabis Institute, the only research organization branded by a school. They do have to get funding, though, from non-cannabis related companies. Codie further shares in this episode why she thinks the cannabis industry is a generational wealth creation event. First, its a new industry, but is an overregulated one. Second, there’s no need to create a market for it. Third, the use cases are prolific—with 40,000 different ways to utilize it. Fourth, the audience's expansion of cannabis is astounding. Cannabis is definitely not a panacea or a drug that cures everything, but research can definitely back up how it can ease certain illnesses. To hear more about venture capital in the cannabis industry and more relevant information from Codie, download and listen to the episode. The European investors are starting to get excited. Troys ays Asia investment is waking up with asymmetry knowledge to capital. Most of the RED HOT HEALTHCARE podcast shows are about 30 minutes in length. However this one was a true 'hour of power' - and perhaps my most engaging yet. Because I was lucky enough to have secured an interview with Steve DeAngelo. Steve is an undisputed national leader and provocative visionary in the cannabis industry. With four decades of activism and advocacy, he’s inspired millions of individuals to not only learn about and benefit from cannabis, but also in influencing efforts to pass laws in local, state, and even foreign countries. He co-founded Harborside Health Center, the largest and most successful medical marijuana dispensary in the world. He's also the co-founder and president of the ArcView Group a company and investor network, which successfully introduces investors to the cannabis community. He also wrote a powerful and well-researched book, which completely transformed the way that many individuals, including myself, have come to view cannabis. It's called The Cannabis Manifesto - and I highly suggest you make this your next purchase and read. Steve has been featured in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, CNN, O’Reilly Factor, the Associated Press, Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, the BBC, the Discovery Channel, Fortune Magazine, Forbes Magazine, and many other major media outlets. In this show episode...Dr. Steve and Steve DeAngelo discuss some incredible dialogue on cannabis, including: The 'tainted' history and perpetuated lies (some eye-opening 'Whoppers') Why it is NOT an intoxicant Steve's unique history (From MLK, Freedom Riders, and Joining the 'Yippees'...to graduating Magna Cum Laude and going to Law School) Explaining its "ELEGANT & MAGICAL" impact on fighting cancer Why its legalization actually strengthens communities The story of success with Harborside Health and the ArcView Group And so much more...

Along with his brother, Andrew, Steve was the star of Discovery Channel’s Weed Wars TV series.
You know those rare moments in life where you get to meet a truly celebrated figure? Someone whose face you’ve seen online & in print? Someone who’s built up a worldwide following behind their work - and for one brief, shining moment you get to sit and chat with them? How often do these real life meetings ever live up to the hype? How often do we build up an impossible image of the celebrity in our own minds - that when we meet them in the flesh - it pales in comparison to the shining visage we’ve erected in our minds??? THIS was not the case as Anne & I had the great pleasure to find out - as we sat down for an hour to talk with the venerable Steve DeAngelo this past week. We spent weeks e-mailing back and forth with his camp, reading his book, watching his Youtube videos and appearances - so that we could get good and ready for this talk with a man who has been on the Activist & Advocacy front of the Cannabis world for some 40 years. For those not fully familiar with his work, Steve is the owner of the Harborside Health Center in Oakland, CA - the largest medical cannabis dispensary in the United States, serving over 200,000 patients. Fortune Magazine has named him one of the top 7 most powerful people inside the Marijuana Industry today. He’s written a terrific book about the history of cannabis, prohibition, and his own work inside this world - The Cannabis Manifesto. And is also the co-founder and president of the Arcview Group - a company aimed at introducing bright, promising cannabis entrepreneurs to angel investors who can fund their work. We speak to Steve about his path of Activism & Entrepreneurship (and why he sees them as mutually beneficial). About his own time & connection to our neck of the woods, inside the Emerald Triangle, and his own love of the culture we have built up here and the work of the legacy cannabis farmer. He shares his thoughts on the unique challenges confronting our community and the tools he sees as key to staying vital & financially solvent in the tumultuous time to come. He talks about the ways in which the Prohibition era programmed us toward a mentality that will not sustain us in the next iteration to come. And the shift he sees as critical to become viable in the new, legitimate marketplace. And he offers us guidance on how to continue to affect the current paradigm surrounding cannabis. Moving, as he says, “out of the shadows & into the Light.” And ultimately Steve guides back to the plant itself. To those amongst us who are called to work with and cultivate it. To use it reverently & as the healing, medicinal currency for which it is best suited. To caretake the plant so that it can caretake us and our families and communities, and usher in the type of world we wish to inhabit… We simply must be willing to sit & listen.. And trust that the way we will be made known. We are deeply honored and proud to bring you this powerful talk from a great man. Cheers.
