A recent research collaboration between a university and a commercial farm studied 1,500 sows and 22,000 piglets and discovered unexpected findings about the common practice of split suckling. Their research found that this long-standing practice might not be benefiting piglets on day one as much as producers previously thought. Discussing the research are Mikayla Spinler, a graduate research assistant at Kansas State University, and Ashley Hartman, a research coordinator at Pillen Family Farms and DNA Genetics. The two discuss how the research was chosen, conducted and next steps on today's episode.

DNA Genetics: Unique Strains for Hash, Amsterdam Beginnings, Legacy PartnershipWhen we say that today's guests are responsible for some of the biggest strains in the history of the plant, it's almost an understatement. We all grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s hearing about the cultural boom in Amsterdam, but these guys were living it.Blackleaf is blessed in the FSOTD studio by none other than Don and Aaron aka DNA Genetics, basically your OG's OGs, to discuss their migration to Amsterdam, running with legends like Sam the Skunkman and Dave Crockett, how they began breeding seeds in the early 2000s, coming back to the US, and the natural evolution of DNA Genetics that's turned them into a global brand with more hall-of-fame hitters than you can count. For the uninitiated, DNA Genetics is a renowned breeding company founded in Amsterdam in 2004, known for creating some of the industry's most iconic and award-winning strains. Some of these legendary strains include LA Confidential, Kosher Kush, and Tangie. DNA Genetics continues to innovate and expand with a strong global reputation, influencing the market through collaborations, seed distribution, and cutting-edge breeding techniques. You'll get to hear Don and Aaron dive deep into their ex-pat lives in Amsterdam and how they got their first building locked down, immediately started blowing massive tree, and had the cops bust down their doors on day 1. They soon partnered with a local coffee shop to grow and slang their creations, eventually having locals come in asking for seeds based on fire herb they blew just down the street. If you've ever heard of the “good old days” these were definitely them. You seriously can't count the number of unbelievable stories that are contained in this pod. Some of the other crazy tidbits that pop up during this episode include the DNA Genetics x Crockett Family Farms origin story and creating Tangie, how B-Real named the 24k strain, the LA Confidential story, how the Chocolope strain got its name on accident, growing seeds from Shantibaba himself, and how they got Barrington Levy to play an unforgettable High Times party in Amsterdam back in the day.Don and Aaron are undeniably living legends in the industry that continue to partner, expand, and take over the world with their renowned genetics. Look out for their upcoming releases with Sensi Seeds through their Breeding Grounds project, a global collaborative breeding project, the likes of which include Sherbinskis, Serge, Humboldt Seed Co., and more.Subscribe to our channel and the FSOTD.com site to keep up with other key players and enjoy conversations with trailblazers from the culture you can't find anywhere else. Guests: Dr. Tom Rathje and Dr. Jason Schneider both with DNA GeneticsToday's episode dives into the genetic advancements made in the swine industry and the impact those advancements have on all other parameters. Joining us to help dig into this genetics topic are Dr. Tom Rathje and Dr. Jason Schneider, both with DNA Genetics. Dr. Rathje spoke about how genetic change has accelerated in recent years due to the adoption of genomic selection, which improves the accuracy with which we identify a superior animal. You use that information to decide which animals are retained to reproduce. (8:23)Dr. Schneider mentioned that with genetic makeup changing, the nutritional needs for swine are changing as well. He said amino acids are ratioed off of lysine, and the assumption is if lysine levels are correct, you're in the ballpark. But different breeds have different feed intakes and performances in lean gain, so changes to nutrition are coming. (17:38)Dr. Rathje discussed that labor is always discussed as a big challenge in the swine industry, so we have to produce an animal that is more self-sufficient and able to produce and wean pigs on her own. The 14, 14, 21 program was designed to identify sows that have the ability to wean 14, 14lb pigs for 21 days on her own. (26:25). Dr. Schneider said the largest sustainability area we can increase is reducing mortality. If we can increase survivability through our genetic selection index, it's a huge saver in less inputs to create the same amount of product. (46:56) Dr. Rathje wrapped up by saying research is taking place that looks at the activation of a pig's immune system and looks at the genes that might turn on. Now we have to figure out how to implement the knowledge. In episode 52 of the Global Captive Podcast, supported by legacy specialists R&Q, Richard explores the growing world of captive insurance for businesses involved in the legalised cannabis industry. A complex legal environment for the sector, especially in the United States, has made insurance hard to come by and captives are now being formed by businesses desperate for coverage. Richard is joined by Mike Parrish, Senior Vice President and Client Services Leader at Marsh Management Services Bermuda, who has been involved with two cannabis captives formed in the jurisdiction. We have a captive owner interview with Josh Hamlin, Chief Legal Officer at DNA Genetics, which formed a captive in Bermuda earlier this year. And Rocco Petrilli, Chairman of the National Cannabis Risk Management Association (NCRMA), also joined to discuss why the association formed a captive for its members in 2020. The New Episode of MiCannacast this week has Cannadave & Groovee reviewing a product from Skymint. We review the DNA Genetics & Skymint collab of their LA Confidential strain. We also talk about our recent trip to Hazel Park and our first ever visit Skymint. Industry news updates and Michigan trying to have blood limits for impaired driving. Skymint Hazel Park We stopped in Skymint in Hazel park this past week for our dispo review. If you are not familiar with Skymint they are part or affiliated with Green Peak Innovations. Not familiar with Green Peak the CEO at a time couple of years ago was a big proponent in moving the caregivers out of the medical market with overages and having only licensed shops sell licensed products. This did not go over well with the cannabis community in Michigan because the caregiver program built the cannabis industry here in the state and corporate cannabis comes in and takes it away. This ended up being the end of overages eventually in the state and now you can only buy licensed products. Skymint had a welcoming facility in hazel park. A very helpful budtender named Olivia helped Cannadave & Groovee out with our selections of products and showed us around the store. She was very knowledgeable and helpful through the process. The shop mostly contains all their products and nobody else's. They only have Skymint flower and concentrates; they did have some other flavor of edibles tho. It was interesting to see this but that's what it's about by being fully integrated with cannabis you can operate with just your product. Overall nice shop okay pricing, great customer service, and very helpful. If you are not a fan of skymint products don't think this is the shop for you. Skymint x DNA Genetics Collab We are seeing more and more growers who breed seeds collabing with shops to get their genetics out to the consumers. Common Citizen collabing with Sherbinskis out in California, You have Gage Cannabis & Cookies Collabing, and now we have Skymint and DNA Genetics collab. We think this is cool because of all the unique genetics out there and on top of it you know these are legit genetics when it's a collaboration not fake ones. The review is on LA Confidential by DNA Genetics. This strain is grown by Skymint in their facilities. The flower was on the older side being tested last year Nov or Oct so it's been on the shelf for about 6 months. Didn't have much of a smell but the taste wasn't that good either on the joint. The high and effects weren't too potent and didn't knock you down, you pretty much wanted to smoke another doobie after lol. The strain review is on LA Confidential by DNA Genetics. Listen to the episode to see our breakdown of points and what we truly thought of this product. Impaired Driving THC Limits Michigan representatives are trying to make impaired driving with cannabis by testing your blood content. If you have over 5 nanograms of THC in the blood you are deemed not safe to drive or impaired driving. 1 nanogram of THC equals 1 billionth of a gram. This is ridiculous because Michigan is a Medical and Adult-use state. All medical patients in the state can't drive because they technically would be impaired. This is just another example of a step backward for the cannabis community. We had a great discussion on this with our community during our Live Wake N Bake Sessions Every Saturday at 9 am. Most on our wake N bake don't think it will pass and it's just infringement on the industry. Come sesh with us and join our conversations live. Advocate, Educate, Inspire Episode 54: Michigan Clean State Bill & Ghost 313 Review In this episode of MiCannaCast, Cannadave and Groovee discuss Michigan Clean State Bill & Ghost 313 Review. Huge news for the state of Michigan that this has been signed especially because we have used rec cannabis for about a year and we legalized in 2018. We also discuss a strain from Ghost 313 Madarian Cake and review this strain. DNA Genetics makes its way over to the Michigan market. It looks like they connected with Skymint brands for exclusive rights for growing their strains. DNA Genetics DNA Genetics has been around and is a great seed breeder coming up with Kosher Kusher, Strawberry banana, La Confidential, and many more. This could be a big win for Skymint and Green Peak Innovations. Green Peak Innovations is Michigan's big money corporate cannabis company in the state. We shall see how this plays out in the coming months here in the state. It's similar to what Gage Cannabis did with Cookies. Gage is the only company in the state that can have legit Cookies genetics because of the collaboration with them from Cali. This could be the way of the future. Ghost 313 Review. Secondly, we talked about the product Madraian Cake from The Reef Detroit. It was grown by Ghost 313 Detroit. It definitely had that tangy terp smell right as soon as you opened the bag. It was more on the energetic side for sure which was what I was looking for. The ash wasn't the best color and the taste towards the end kinda went away. Overall it was an okay high, the price point was high for not the best taste and ash. But I would get them again because it was a Sativa and gave the energetic feeling we were looking for, just hopefully a little cheaper. Clean State Bill Breaking News in the State of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the "Clean State Bill" which is an expungement of related cannabis misdemeanors or felonies off your record. Any Felonies over 10 years won't be removed. FREE MICHAEL THOMPSON he is still behind bars and this law will not affect him keeping him in jail. He needs to be let out as well as the others with the small nonviolent marijuana-related offenses. This is a great step for us as a state and hopefully this trend continues with more expungement from marijuana crimes. We're happy to see movement in the industry continuing to grow. Have you ever blamed something on your genes? Perhaps you’ve said things like “I can’t change that, it’s in my genes”. Now it’s true that we inherit our genes from our parents. However, once you understand epigenetics, you will realize that this does not mean that your health and your life is dictated by your genes.Something else has to happen for your genes to be switched on. Epigenetics is all about the study of the other factors that control whether genes are switched on or not. This is known as gene expression in the field of epigenetics.By listening to this podcast, you will realise that you have far more control over your genes. Even if your parents had bad genes that made them more susceptible to certain diseases, it does not mean that this will affect you as well. Once you learn about epigenetics, you will realise that you can take charge of your health and your life.
