In this episode of Keen On, Andrew talks with Dr. Carl L. Hart about his new book, Drug Use for Grown-Ups: Chasing Liberty in the Land of Fear. Carl discusses the restrictions, benefits and dangers of recreational drug use in the United States of America. Between drug policy, the criminal justice system and racially-ordained liberties in America, Dr. Carl also condemns the country's treatment of drug users dependent upon their race. Dr. Carl L. Hart is the Chair of the Department of Psychology at Columbia University. He is also the Ziff Professor of Psychology in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry. Professor Hart has published numerous scientific and popular articles in the area of neuropsychopharmacology and is co-author of the textbook Drugs, Society and Human Behavior (with Charles Ksir). His most recent book, “High Price: A Neuroscientist’s Journey of Self-Discovery That Challenges Everything You Know About Drugs and Society,” was the 2014 winner of the PEN/E.O. He has also appeared in several documentary films including the award-winning “The House I Live In.” His essays have been published in several popular publications including The New York Times, Scientific American, The Nation, Ebony, The Root, and O Globo (Brazil’s leading newspaper). Carl is committed to the people who are sick and tired of seeing their tax dollars being used to fund unethical people and corporations, which ultimately perpetuates social inequality and does not lead to effective drug policy. A key element of his approach is the use of empirical evidence to guide public policy, even if it makes us uncomfortable. If we do this, people could have more humane and effective criminal justice policy, and a healthier and more productive society overall. Learn more about your ad choices. At age 27, Joe Decker was out of shape and out of hope.  He was an alcoholic and drug addict who had just hit rock bottom. Three years later, Joe broke the Guinness Record for World’s Fittest Man. He got there - from out of hope to Fittest Man - by mastering the goal setting process, and that’s the focus for today’s conversation. Host Johnny Waite talks to Joe about:    -Joe’s starting point. As we said, he was at rock bottom and could barely run a mile. He decided to fill the void with fitness.  -Using baby steps as you climb to reach your goal.  As Joe says, “you have to be able to run a 5k to run 150 miles.” -Balancing patience with optimism. What we mean here is, often times the optimism when first setting a goal makes you overwork yourself and potentially burnout.  Joe is all about patience and setting manageable goals.  -Executing: After you’ve set a goal, prepared and are at the event, it’s time to get robotic. Get out of your head and focus on the next task.    Background on Joe Decker: Joe Decker is recognized as “The Worlds Fittest Man,” an ultra-endurance power athlete, renowned fitness trainer, and syndicated columnist who has helped thousands of women, men, kids and seniors get into shape and lose weight.   This outdoor workout format that Joe created is the same that he used to break the Guinness World Records® 24-Hour Physical Fitness Challenge in 2000. Thanks to his amazing strength, courage, an incredible will to live, the heroic actions of the men in his unit, the prayers of thousands, and all the healthcare providers at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, near Washington D.C., Travis remains on the road to recovery. Every day is a battle, but Travis continues to astound friends and family alike with his progress and with his amazing spirit. In September 2013, Travis and his wife Kelsey founded the Travis Mills Foundation, a nonprofit organization, formed to benefit and assist post 9/11 veterans who have been injured in active duty or as a result of their service to our nation. The veteran and their families receive an all-inclusive, all-expenses paid, barrier-free vacation to Maine where they participate in adaptive activities, bond with other veteran families, and enjoy much-needed rest and relaxation in Maine’s great outdoors. The Travis Mills Group LLC was started shortly after, where Travis consults with and speaks to companies and organizations nationwide inspiring all to overcome life’s challenges and adversity. Travis’s story has been featured on local and national news including Fox News’ Happening Now with Jenna Lee, The O’Reilly Factor with Bill O’Reilly, CNN with Barbara Starr, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Mitchell Plitnick talks to Scott about the dizzying state of the Israeli elections. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has finally formed a government after three rounds of elections that looked to be tilting toward his main rival, Benny Gantz. Plitnick theorizes that Gantz simply is not as savvy a career politician as Netanyahu is, and in part he just got tired of the endless fight. He may even have used the coronavirus pandemic as an excuse to call off his campaign. Now his coalition has supposedly entered a power sharing agreement with Netanyahu, in which the latter will serve as prime minister for 18 months with Gantz as his deputy, before the two switch roles. Scott and Plitnick are virtually certain that Netanyahu will find a way to avoid following through on this agreement, all the while avoiding prosecution for his corruption charges. In the meantime, Israel’s brutal subjugation of the Palestinians continues apace. Discussed on the show: “Israel’s unity government protects Netanyahu from prosecution, paves the way for annexation” (Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft) Mitchell Plitnick is president of ReThinking Foreign Policy. His writing has appeared in Ha’aretz, the New Republic, the San Francisco Chronicle, and many other outlets, and he has regularly offered commentary in a wide range of radio and television outlets including PBS News Hour and the O’Reilly Factor. Today we have the awesome privilege to hear from Travis Mills, a US Army Staff Sergeant, who in 2012 suffered a catastrophic injury that left him as a quadruple amputee. That’s right, he has no arms or legs and is one of only five servicemen from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan ever to survive quadruple amputee injuries. I reached out to him when I started this podcast back in October because I had seen him speak and was incredibly inspired by his positivity, hopefulness, and most importantly, his sense of humor. We finally have him on the show- and it is so timely and poignant- as we are all going through the COVID-19 challenge and so much of the scary and unknown. Travis is someone who faced challenges that were scary and unknown, and his perspective on how he handled these challenges will be so valuable to us as we go through this pandemic. After his injury and retiring from the Army, Travis has become a speaker, a NY Times best-selling author of Tough As They Come, and founder of the Travis Mills Foundation, a nonprofit organization that benefits and assists wounded and injured veterans. His story inspires, encourages, challenges, and motivates audiences to move forward. He illustrates how resilient the human spirit is, how unbreakable the will is when pressed with difficult demands, and how triumphant a person can be when tasked with the seemingly impossible. His story has been featured on local and national news including Fox News’ Happening Now with Jenna Lee, The O’Reilly Factor with Bill O’Reilly, CNN with Barbara Starr, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “And I guess just finding out like, okay, well my military days are done. I’m not, you know, the guy they call on to go on on missions and get the bad guys anymore but I still have a positive life I can live.” “The clear choice for me was just like, I’ve got my wife and my kids, let’s push forward, find a new purpose, new normal, and get moving.” “No matter what situation you find yourself in, whether you’re COVID-19 sitting at home, scared of everything or maybe you’ve had a problem at work today, just understand you’re in charge of your attitude and it’s all about looking at the positives, pushing forward in life, and getting after it every day.” In this episode, you will hear: - Travis recounts how he was injured and how he got his growth mindset and motto “Never Give Up, Never Quit” - His biggest blessings from his injury and the powerful life lessons he has learned - The advice he gives for all of us going through this challenging time  Thank you so much for listening! John Goodwin, HSUS and Jupiter Today, a return visit from John Goodwin, anti-puppy mill campaigner from the Humane Society of the United States. Here's the email that prompted this interview, as well as information and a link to last year's interview with John. On February 6th, a group of U.S. Representatives introduced a bill to crack down on puppy mill cruelty by closing loopholes in the law that allow problem breeders with severe and multiple Animal Welfare Act violations to continue doing business as usual. The Welfare of Our Friends (WOOF) Act, reintroduced by U.S. Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., Charlie Crist, D-Fla., Glenn Thompson, R-Pa., and Jim McGovern, D-Mass, has the potential to improve the welfare of thousands of dogs and puppies bred and sold each year by federally licensed commercial breeders. In today's blog post, Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, and Sara Amundson, president of Humane Society Legislative Fund, explain what this means for animals and our fight to stop puppy mills: Currently, the USDA, tasked with licensing and inspecting certain businesses that use animals, routinely relicenses puppy breeders with dozens of severe violations on their records, including dead and dying animals who didn’t receive adequate veterinary care, underweight animals and animals kept in filthy and unsafe conditions. Problem dealers whose licenses have been suspended or revoked can also essentially obtain a new license under the name of a family member while owning the same animals on the same property. For years, we have exposed this disregard for the law and the need to close these loopholes in our annual Horrible Hundred reports on problem puppy mills in the United States, which we compile from USDA and state inspection data. Here is the earlier post and podcast: This is a great interview with John Goodwin about Puppy Mills and the Humane Society of the United States' campaign to put them out of business. We touch on what the HSUS is and other issues, but mostly puppy mills. I'm glad we have smart, compassionate people, such as John, pushing our case. John Goodwin is the Senior Director of the Stop Puppy Mills campaign at The Humane Society of the United States. John joined The HSUS in 2000 as the grassroots outreach coordinator in the Government Affairs department and went on to spend over a decade spearheading the efforts to combat animal fighting in the Animal Cruelty and Fighting Campaign. Most recently John spent time lobbying for the organization on Capitol Hill in his role as the political director for The Humane Society Legislative Fund, the political affiliate of HSUS. In January 2016 John joined Stop Puppy Mills campaign. John has testified before numerous state legislatures, acted as an expert witness in criminal animal fighting trials and has been featured in coverage from Fox News, MSNBC, CNN, NPR, national news programs for ABC, NBC and ABC, Court TV, ESPN, Al Jazeera, the Associated Press, USA Today, The New York Times and Men’s Journal magazine. John has appeared on Larry King Live, The O’Reilly Factor, Inside Edition and has debated on several national cable talk shows while giving over one thousand interviews to local media outlets. Let’s face it…there’s a deep complexity to the Enneagram.  Yes, for some, it is extremely easy to nail down their type.  But for others…well, it’s more complicated.  Why?  First, everyone exhibits behaviors that look like a particular type.  And to make it even more difficult, there are an infinite number of expressions of each type, some of which will look nothing like you on the exterior, but are still a unique variation of that particular type. However, we can’t determine our type by our behaviors.  We really have to dig down into what’s driving those behaviors and ask ourselves what is the underlying motivation behind my behavior? When our guest, author and CNN political analyst, Kirsten Powers, reached out about her uncertainty in typing herself as a One or an Eight, we had to help her land on something. During their fight with cancer, Jim documented their journey in a blog, Journey to Healing, that touched many lives around the world. Jim and Andrea spoke to cancer groups and churches, offering hope to those facing life's challenges.  Their faith, grace and courage was an inspiration to all who knew them and, through Jim's writing, continues to change the lives of those who read their story. Jim has appeared in numerous print venues and radio interviews. Ginger Gilbert Ravella is a military wife and widow, mother of five, stepmother of two, writer and international speaker.  At 36 years old, she faced the sudden tragic loss of her college-sweetheart husband in Operation Iraqi Freedom and the horrors that quickly followed. John Goodwin, HSUS and Jupiter This is a great interview with John Goodwin about Puppy Mills and the Humane Society of the United States' campaign to put them out of business. Have you ever heard the phrase "Drinking the Kool-Aid"? Do you know where it comes from? Do you really? It's an image that few Americans who were around at the time can forget: bodies - some piled on top of each other - sprawled around a crude tin-roofed building in the middle of the South American jungle. A mass suicide of over 900 church members who willingly (and some not so willingly) drank cyanide laced punch at the request of their leader, the Reverend Jim Jones.  The place was officially known as the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project or, as most people called it, Jonestown.  The evening news of November 18, 1978 carried the shocking images around the globe and soon Americans began asking themselves the familiar question - how could this have happened? In this episode, we'll be taking a look at some of the background to the Jonestown Massacre and, as this is a podcast called "The is the President", the US President's response to tragedy. In this case, a press briefing from President James "Jimmy" Carter on November 30, 1978. We'll also play a portion of what is known as the "Jonestown Death Tape", a harrowing real-time recording taken by Jonestown leader Jim Jones as he exhorted his followers to their deaths. And we'll try to set the record straight on the drink involved - despite the ubiquity of the phrase, the drink mix used in Jonestown was actually "Flavor Aid" and not "Kool Aid."  If you'd like to read more about the goings on in the Guyanese jungle, Jonestown, the Rev. Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple, there's an excellent website maintained by San Diego State University that contains pictures, recordings, and a treasure trove of primary source documents. On a lighter note, Harmon and Scott also discuss the merits of Philadelphia's cheese steaks, the James Bond movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," and the possibility of President Oprah.   WARNING: This episode contains graphic audio of people in extreme distress.  In addition, we're welcoming a new sponsor onboard - Dennis Miller.
