Vikings vs Chargers… Good morning Horners! Your Minnesota Vikings have flown out to Los Angeles to meet the Chargers at StubHub Center, the soccer home of the LA Galaxy. It is the smallest stadium in the NFL only seating 30,000 fans. It promises to be mostly purple with Vikings fans as LA tries to build a fanbase in 2 hours north of San Diego. Good luck with that Chargers. Mike Zimmer leads a team into this contest that looks to make a statement and continue to win their way into the playoffs. To play better and better football. Can they do that against the Phillip Rivers and the Chargers? They may only have a 5-8 record but every lost was by less than a score. They can play and win and should not be taken lightly. Kirk Cousins will have all his weapons with the exception of RB2 Alexander Mattison who was ruled out due to an ankle injury. Adam Thielen will be back and the idea of he and Stefon Diggs along with Kyle Rudolph and Irv Smith Jr have the potential to wreak havoc. Bisi Johnson can contribute too, but he is currently listed as questionable with a quad injury. The offense should be able to score points. The defense seemed to employ a defensive backfield rotation that worked last week against the Lions. We should see more of it against the Chargers. Expect more Mike Hughes and Holton Hill, especially if Xavier Rhodes, who is listed as questionable with the ankle injury from last week, doesn’t play well if at all. Rivers is 38 and doesn’t move well, so that also can lead to pressure from the Vikings pass rushers too. All that will help to get a west coast win, outdoors, and on grass, if they start out hot and if the offense can get a big lead, the defense then can make the game one dimensional. Good morning Horners! The possibility of the Minnesota Vikings throwing a 50 burger against the Detroit Lions this Sunday may seem ridiculous, but that is exactly what Dave is calling for. The old men, Ted Glover, Drew Bunting, and Dave Stefano discussed the possibility in this episode of GMG. Ted rejoins us after taking time out for a little champagne tasting to discuss the beautiful victory over the Miami Dolphins last week. The awesome defensive play there resulted in 9 sacks and shutting down the Fins after a giveaway touchdown and a fluky explosive run. Comments were made on the differences seen in playcalling by Kevin Stefanski versus John DeFilippo and how the offense was more productive than it had been in a while. There was still the angst over Kirk Cousins and his seemingly one or two bad plays a game that results in points for the other team. If the Vikings are getting hot this time of the season, not only on the defense but on the offense, if those mistakes are eliminated going into the playoffs, the possibilities can actually be super. Consistency in the maximizing of assets in playcalling will have any opponent not wanting to play the Vikings. The depth on the defense has shown it’s worth so far this season with outstanding play by not only Anthony Harris but with Mackensie Alexander really starting to step up his game, along with Holton Hill proving to be the best undrafted rookie free agent signing probably since Adam Thielen. Drew runs Dave and Ted through another round of Way or No Way. There are some interesting questions about the dynamic duo of Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen, Kyle Rudolph’s performance, and another that leads to that 50 burger prediction. Good Morning Gjallarhorn Episode 027 – Purple Pain Good morning Horners! The whole gang is here today, Ted, Drew, and myself looking forward to the Minnesota Vikings hosting the New Orleans Saints on Sunday night. This is a very big game with playoff implications at the halfway point of the season. The Saints are coming in with a 5-1 record. The Vikings currently rest on a three-game winning streak at 4-2-1, and both teams look to return to the playoffs at the end of the season and this game can help determine seeding. We start out with Drew looking for a streak that we haven't seen in a while. Move on to some interesting numbers, then ask about injuries. Ted wonders about our feelings towards the Saints and other teams, some sources of pain in our Vikings fandom. We talk about the Minneapolis Miracle and wonder if that helped any of those feelings? If you didn't know already, there are a lot of Vikings fans that do not like, at least, the current iteration or regime down in New Orleans, and how they play football. We talk about the running game, and without Dalvin Cook, how Latavius Murray, Roc Thomas, and Mike Boone are getting the job done. I wonder why Brett Jones isn't playing guard with Tom Compton out. Danny Isidora filled in after the injury last week, and will again Sunday. We definitely hope he has a better game. The way the game looks on paper, expect a lot of passing, and the need for pass protection by the Vikings. While recording, Ted breaks the news that Everson Griffen will be back! This is truly outstanding, and as we learned yesterday, he is no longer on the injury report and we can expect to see him getting at least some snaps to chase down Drew Brees. The secondary will be challenged, especially since Xavier Rhodes [might be], and Anthony Barr will be sidelined due to injury. The young Holton Hill along with Eric Wilson will have their work cut out for them. We expect Coach Mike Zimmer to mix things up again to confuse coverages and blitzes. Drew hopes to see more and better tackling as a key to success. We are seeing purple, and hope the home squad will levy Purple Pain towards the Saints.
