This week I spoke to Mike Hughes. Mike is a Performance Analyst, having worked with some of the best teams in the world and developed them by providing understanding and insight based on deconstructing and exploring phenomena in training and performance. Mike and I worked alongside each other at the English institute of Sport, though on different teams, Mike worked with British cycling in the years that it went from mediocre to utterly dominant. He's worked at Insight Analysis where he was assigned to the England Rugby team where you may have seen him alongside the England coaching team where Mike was beavering away crunching numbers on hand to feed directly to the coaches. Performance Analysis has risen in prominence in the last few decades - nearly every top operation has analysts as a central part of their backroom teams. What is interesting about the discussion with Mike though is that he creates the case that insight is all very well but if you haven't got the relationship with the coaches and leaders to have that conversation that could necessitate change, (perhaps sometimes against their preferred way of working), then analysis stays as just that - an unused data point. At the very heart of Performance Analysis is the saying “Why guess, when you could know?” - but as Mike illustrates a deeper question is - “Now you know what needs to be different, but do you know how to make difference?” Happy listening Notes Performance analysis in the blood - Mike hughes son of Prof Mike hughes! The Chiefs’ rookies got their first taste of the NFL during a weekend mini-camp. There weren’t as many first-year players as in previous offseasons, and there wasn’t contact. But coach Andy Reid said he was happy with the event, and we hear from him and the Chiefs’ first draft pick, second-rounder Nick Bolton from Mizzou, in this episode of The Star’s daily SportsBeat KC podcast. You’ll also hear from Star beat writers Herbie Teope and Sam McDowell, who attended the mini-camp and heard what the rookies had to say. The Chiefs have several more organized team activities (OTA) events before their summer break hits, but this was an important one in terms of getting the Chiefs’ first-year players acclimated to the NFL. Intro: The Wild's playoff opponent wasn't determined until the final day of the regular season, but now we know it's Vegas -- a team Minnesota went 5-3 against this season. Can the Wild win a playoff series for the first time since 2015? 5:00: The Wolves ran into a quality opponent and a familiar problem in a 114-103 loss to Denver: They lack size, and Karl-Anthony Towns lacks in-game maturity. 8:00: Going deep on the Twins with beat writer Megan Ryan, who was in Chicago for all three games of the sweep against the White Sox. In this episode Tyler breaks down the top 5 corner back prospects for the draft and the likelihood that the Vikings would take one is high at #14 could be possible. After the legal issues of Jeff Gladney surfaced, suddenly the signing Patrick Peterson and Mackensie Alexander for a one year rental, Mike Hughes’ injury history and the fact that the only CB on the roster for 2022 may only be Cameron Dantzler, throw in Mike Zimmer’s affinity for corners and this selection may indeed happen. Cornerbacks This cornerback class was a lot of fun. From top to bottom, this class is loaded in the top 100 with a lot of varying play styles. I believe there are upwards of 7 guys who could go in the first round with a lot of talent available into day 3. Corners are at a premium in the league now more than ever and I wouldn’t be shocked to see a massive run go early day 3. Corners are a fun position to break down. Some are excellent in press coverage and others only playing off coverage or zone. The biggest thing I look for when watching them is football IQ. How are their read and reaction skills? Do they have the athleticism to match their instincts and keep up with the receiver? How are their ball skills? When they get beat, how do they recover? A lot of nuances that get differentiate the different types of corners but they all still need to cover the receivers just the same. On today's show, we're talking about the prospect of the day, Tre' McKitty, TE Georgia. The Vikings could use a late round tight end, and McKitty might just fit the bill. Most of the show will be dedicated to the slot corner position. Mackensie Alexander, Jeff Gladney and Mike Hughes all exist in this one spot- but they do a lot more than just covering the 3rd wide receiver. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
