But, more importantly, they now have a giant tire testing facility in Texas: Treadwell Research Park – an expansive property with dirt and mud trails, rock crawling, water crossings, serious grades, an absolutely enormous skid pad (that can be completely submerged in 2 mm of water in no time thanks to a pair of huge reservoirs and some seriously powerful pumps) and even a wet slalom course. Jason experienced all Treadwell had to offer behind the wheel of a 4-door Jeep Wrangler and BMW 330i and reports back. We'll learn that at America's Discount Rack you can get free tire rotations (with tire purchase) and free flat repair (no purchase necessary!). But they don't hand out these services out of the kindness of their tire-loving hearts. It's all part of Treadwell's plan to collect and analyze all kinds of tire wear data to help customers make informed decisions when buying new tires and make better tires. They'll collect information about a tire's make, model, mileage, geographic location and more to find what compounds and tread patterns are best for specific use cases and guide customers to the best choice for their vehicle, driving style, climate, and location. For instance, they have discovered that folks living in twisty, hilly western Pennsylvania go through tires 20% faster than folks living in Nebraska. Derek suggests Treadwell implement a tire wear score so enthusiasts can compare notes and compete for total tire destruction domination. Similar to Treadwell Research Park (and Tire Rack's other testing facility in South Bend, Indiana), Derek had the chance to experience a flooded skid “pan” at the CHP's emergency vehicle operations course (EVOC) training grounds driving in Ford Crown Victorias and Dodge Chargers. Jason Fenske of Engineering Explained has been on a mission to teach the world about the importance of tires, and recently pitted a F80 BMW M3 Competition on mid-grade tires against a diesel Chysler PT Cruiser wearing fresh Continentals. Science ensued. Tires are indeed very important – and while some *coughpirellicough* will grip like no other, they tend to disintegrate in short order (and dramatically so). But they're not all bad – the guys have kind things to say about the Cinturato CN36 and CN12. But the Carmudgeon tire of choice remains Michelins and Vredsteins, which are mounted on everything from Jason's e-Golf, the Van, Jynah, the Ferrari 308, Derek's R129, and even Jake's wife's Crosstrek. The guys will also discuss the Avon CR6ZZ, Trofeos and Cup 2s. A report was released this week titled ‘Trust in News in Aotearoa New Zealand', containing data on how much the New Zealand public trusts news organisations. While trust has been declining over the past five years, this year has seen some stabilisation and some optimistic statistics for the future.  To discuss the report and what it means for the relationship between the public and media in Aotearoa, Wire host Castor spoke to one of the study's authors and head of journalism at AUT, Greg Treadwell. I'm hoping that the individual essays can be read fairly well on their own, but see here for a summary of the essays that have been released thus far, and for a bit more about the series as a whole.) In my last essay, I talked about the possibility of "gentleness" towards various non-human Others - for example, animals, aliens, and AI systems. But I also highlighted the possibility of "getting eaten," in the way that Timothy Treadwell gets eaten by a bear in Herzog's Grizzly Man: that is, eaten in the midst of an attempt at gentleness. Herzog accuses Treadwell of failing to take seriously the "overwhelming indifference of Nature." And I think we can see some of the discourse about AI risk - and in particular, the strand that descends from the rationalists, and from the writings of Eliezer Yudkowsky in particular - as animated by an existential orientation similar to Herzog's: one that approaches Nature (and also, bare intelligence) with a certain kind of fundamental mistrust. I call this orientation "deep atheism." This essay tries to point at it. Baby-eaters Recall, from my last essay, that dead bear cub, and its severed arm - torn off, Herzog supposes, by a male bear seeking to stop a female from lactating. The suffering of children has always been an especially vivid objection to God's benevolence. Dostoyevsky's Ivan, famously, refuses heaven in protest. And see also, the theologian David Bentley Hart: "In those five-minute patches here and there when I lose faith ... it's the suffering of children that occasions it, and that alone." Yudkowsky has his own version: "baby-eaters." Thus, he ridicules the wishful thinking of the "group selectionists," who predicted/hoped that predator populations would evolve an instinct to restrain their breeding in order to conserve the supply of prey. Indeed, Yudkowsky made baby-eating a central sin in the story "Three Worlds Collide," in which humans encounter a crystalline, insectile alien species that eats their own (sentient, suffering) children. And this behavior is a core, reflectively-endorsed feature of the alien morality - one that they did not alter once they could. The word "good," in human language, translates as "to eat children," in theirs. And Yudkowsky points to less fictional/artificial examples of Nature's brutality as well. For example, the parasitic wasps that put Darwin in problems-of-evil mode[2] (see here, for nightmare-ish, inside-the-caterpillar imagery of the larvae eating their way out from the inside). Or the old elephants who die of starvation when their last set of teeth falls out. Part of the vibe, here, is that old (albeit: still-underrated) thing, from Tennyson, about the color of nature's teeth and claws. Dawkins, as often, is eloquent: The total amount of suffering per year in the natural world is beyond all decent contemplation. During the minute it takes me to compose this sentence, thousands of animals are being eaten alive; others are running for their lives, whimpering with fear; others are being slowly devoured from within by rasping parasites; thousands of all kinds are dying of starvation, thirst and disease. Indeed: maybe, for Hart, it is the suffering of human children that most challenges God's goodness. But I always felt that wild animals were the simpler case. Human children live, more, in the domain of human choices, and thus, of the so-called "free will defense," according to which God gave us freedom, and freedom gave us evil, and it's all worth it.
