The Legislature's spring recess is approaching and with about six weeks left in the session, many issues still unresolved.Housing is top of mind for many Minnesotans and lawmakers at the Capitol — whether to rewrite zoning standards statewide to encourage construction of more low-to-moderate cost housing. The issue has created some cross-party alliances, but the bills in front of lawmakers haven't satisfied all who have a stake in the decisions. MPR politics editor Brian Bakst talks with Sen. Lindsey Port, DFL-Burnsville, and the mayor of Prior Lake, Kirt Briggs, about the state's approach to affordable housing. The show runs through May 25. Visitors can enter the gallery by calling or buzzing the office, open Thursdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Fridays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A poetry and potluck event will be held May 18.Mojsilov explains that Degener's work highlights endangered plant species. The exhibition includes 18 framed handmade paper works, with pulp manipulated to form plant imagery. Eight handmade planters, constructed from up-cycled wood, spell out “in danger.” Suspended discs depicting endangered plants, made from frozen paper, gradually melt into the planters, which are seeded with native flowers that will grow over the exhibit's duration.Krug said: I could go on and on about Amanda's artwork, because she's part scientist. She's a chemist. She researches all her subjects to the T. She's a specialist in handmade paper and the history of handmade paper, she collects fibers from all over the world.— Ilene Krug MojsilovA 21st Century Take on Theater of the AbsurdTheater maker Harry Waters, Jr. attended the opening night of Pangea World Theater's staging of “Rhinoceros,” directed by Dipankar Mukherjee. The absurdist play by French playwright Eugène Ionesco was written in 1958 and follows the transformation of a town's residents into rhinoceroses — all except one, the least heroic character.The show runs through April 19 at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis.Waters praised the production's creativity: inventive lighting, a soundscape of Indigenous music, strong choreography and a diverse cast of professional and amateur actors.Harry said: The gift, I would have to say, of what Dipankar gives to this adaptation [is] that it starts huge, and then, as the story goes, it winnows down to this very simple, important issue of the one human being that's standing in resistance to all the totalitarianism and the conformity ... how are we also taking our own stands in spite of everything that's being thrown [at us] that really allows us to know that we're not crazy, that it is not insane that you're standing strong. So that's a conceptual thing that I was really quite pleased to see without being beaten over the head by it.— Harry Waters, Jr.A Multimedia Symphony in the South MetroRetired attorney and former St. Olaf Choir singer Maren Swanson of Burnsville is excited for a joint choral performance at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church in Prior Lake this Saturday at 4 p.m. South Metro Chorale will perform alongside Singers in Accord and Kantorei, with the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kathy Saltzman Romey.The concert features “The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci,” a multimedia symphony by Minnesota composer Jocelyn Hagen.Maren said: I heard Jocelyn speak once about having grown up in a musical family in a small town in North Dakota, and about singing and playing piano from the age of three, she said that she lay in bed as a as an older child, hearing orchestral music in her head and wishing she knew how to write the music down. Well now we get to hear the enchanting music in her head. The work has been performed all across the country and internationally. I actually heard it in Croatia in 2023. The libretto features an English translation of select texts from the notebooks of Da Vinci. The score is soaring, sometimes lyrical, sometimes percussive, always gorgeous. The video uses a new technology that allows it to be synced to the nuances of the music as conducted in a live event. In effect, the video is played like an instrument of the orchestra responding to the conductor, and so every performance is spontaneous and unique. The video features an unfolding of text and images from the notebooks and other animated images that bring the music to life.— Maren Swanson

Mark Rummings, General Manager of Soleta Golf Club in Myakka City, Fla., joined the Club + Resort Talks podcast to discuss the club's progress and future plans. The golf course, designed by Nick Price, opened four months ago and features 93 homes, a swimming pool, a restaurant, and a Performance Center. The club has 200 members and aims for 275 local and 75 national members. Upcoming amenities include a six-hole short course, a putting course, and a driving range with TopTracer technology. The club also plans to develop a 20-acre fishing lake and 200 acres of trails. Rummings emphasized the club's focus on member experience and high-quality golf. In other news, Hunters Run Country Club in Boynton Beach, Fla., introduced its New Year Fitness Challenge: an eight-week initiative designed to encourage employees to adopt healthier habits, build strength, and improve their overall vitality. The Wilds Golf Club in Prior Lake, Minn., and Geneva Golf Club in Alexandria, Minn., will be Troon-affiliated facilities, with the golf management company supporting regional and national sales and marketing efforts for these properties. Lastly, the USGA released its Water Conservation Playbook. The free publication is structured in three sections: fundamental irrigation stewardship (basic maintenance best practices that every golf course could employ); advanced irrigation techniques and conservation strategies (including sensor and irrigation technology) and water sourcing and stewardship (including irrigating with reclaimed or recycled water).

Parts of southern and eastern Minnesota are digging out from more than a foot of heavy, wet snow Wednesday. The National Weather Service received a report of 13 inches of snow near Dennison and 12 inches in Credit River, south of Prior Lake. The official total at the Twin Cities airport as of noon was 9.5 inches.Minneapolis and St. Paul have declared snow emergencies. From food to child care, costs are up for parents in Minnesota. The affordability of raising a family is especially difficult on a single income. The poverty rate for families led by a single mom in Minnesota is about three times higher than families in general, according to estimates by the U.S. Census.  An organization that started in Minneapolis is working around the country to help single moms get out of poverty. It's called Jeremiah Program and it's hosting a summit in Prior Lake and online March 7-9. Among current and former Jeremiah Program participants who will attend the summit is Lavasha Smith, a graduate of the program. Smith joined MPR News host Nina Moini along with Jeremiah Program CEO, Chastity Lord.

He played town ball (amateur baseball) for many years in South Dakota, and Minnesota. He was inducted into the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011. A report out Monday from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University finds that 127 newspapers around the country closed in the last year. It's part of a worsening trend, with communities losing the outlets that cover their local news. But the report also finds an uptick in online news sources funded by philanthropy. Prior Lake is an example of both these trends. Back in April, the Prior Lake American shut down along with five other newspapers that served the southwest metro. Now former Southwest News media general manager Laurie Hartmann is working to launch an online news source in Prior Lake.She spoke with MPR News host Nina Moini about it.

Because I had abruptly ended my teaching career midyear, I was available to be an up-close observer of a remarkable period in America, as a longtime student of 20th century German literature and film.And that's just a taste of my curriculum vitae.I always intended to release an audiobook of Tiny Altars, originally published in paperback and ebook in April 21, 2023. The Combustion Turbine Operations Technical Forum (CTOTF) is the longest continuously active gas turbine industry organization driven by users, for users. CTOTF offers week-long conferences twice annually in the spring and fall. The conferences provide a balance of technical information, user-to-user interaction, and professional development and mentoring for the group's nationwide user base. CTOTF's 2023 Fall Conference will be held September 24–28 at the Mystic Lake Casino Hotel in Prior Lake, Minnesota. As a guest on The POWER Podcast, Dave Tummonds, senior director of Project Engineering with Louisville Gas and Electric (LG&E) and chairman of the board for the CTOTF, talked about the group and some of the things he's looking forward to during the upcoming event. “The biggest thing for me is, when you look at our agenda and what we strive to accomplish over the course of a week-long conference, we hit a lot of things that admittedly some other conferences hit, but we tend to be the best one-stop shop to hit it all,” Tummonds said. Sessions encourage interaction from all attendees and offer an intimate setting where newcomers don't get lost in the crowd. The agenda begins with opening presentations that often dive into industry trends, among other things. This fall, Aron Patrick, director of Research and Development (R&D) with PPL Corp., parent company of LG&E, will give a presentation focused on the energy transition. “On our kickoff day—Monday morning—we're going to have an update from my company's R&D director, who's going to go over some of the things that are being done in the heart of coal country—in Kentucky and similar areas—in preparation for the decarbonization effort,” said Tummonds. “What makes this interesting, I believe, is his analysis, and his group's analysis, which really points out that as we seriously look to decarbonize, we've got to do that with more backup from gas-fired megawatts as opposed to less. It's just a necessity to make up for the times when those renewable megawatts are not available. “The other thing I would mention associated with his presentation is he's going to touch on some efforts in the area of hydrogen blending that his group is specifically looking at, as well as carbon capture and sequestration, that again, when you look at the unique perspective of the heart of coal country, I think serves as an important note for us all.” On the podcast, Tummonds touched on many of the other sessions and activities that are planned this fall too. Among the highlights are presentations by original equipment manufacturers, topical discussions with third-party suppliers and other experts, technical education sessions, leadership development roundtables, environmental updates, and plenty of time for networking and fun.

In this episode, host Craig Pratt talks with Jeff Mader about his life, career, and motivations.  Jeff Mader retired at the beginning of 2023 from the CIO position at Sun Country Airlines. Jeff started working in IT in 1980. Most significant was his nearly twenty- four years at Target where he progressed to a senior level VP reporting to the CIO. Jeff also served as the first CIO of Imagine Companies prior to joining Sun Country Airlines. He has significant background in retail, transportation, and manufacturing. Jeff received his BS degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato majoring in Computer Science, Finance, and Business Management. He received his MBA from University of St Thomas and completed a Mini-Master of Information Technology also at the University of St Thomas. Jeff's signature strengths are developing IT leaders, improving IT performance, IT cost rationalization, and business and IT strategy development. Jeff is widely regarded as a top IT leader that has helped to develop many of the people who are currently in executive level IT positions today. Jeff is a very active volunteer leader in the battle against cancer. He chairs the MN Chapter of the American Cancer Society and is co-founder and chair of CIOs Against Cancer. CIOs Against Cancer mission is to fund early stage cancer researchers who have been vetted by the American Cancer Society. Jeff formerly served on the board of United Through Reading, a non-profit organization that supports deployed military families by helping deployed Moms and Dads read bedtime stories to their children at home. He was the board chair for a term. His 12 year tenure on the board concluded at the end of 2021. Jeff lives in Prior Lake, MN with his wife Judy and enjoys boating, hiking, hunting, and anything outdoors. They have one son, Sam who is a medical device engineer working at Boston Scientific.
