Peg O'Connor, Ph.D., is a Professor of Philosophy at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. Her training is in moral philosophy, feminist philosophy, addiction studies, and the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein. She believes that philosophy helped her to get and remain sober. Avoiding Alcoholics Anonymous for the first 20 years of her sobriety because of the concept of a “higher power,” she is focused on using some of the great canonical thinkers in western philosophy to illuminate dimensions of addiction. She further shares this in her new book, Higher and Friendly Powers: Transforming Addiction and Suffering (Wildhouse Publications, August 2022).Reco12 is an organization with the mission of learning and sharing the similarities of addiction of all kinds and the similarities of recovery from all afflictions and addictions, and gaining and sharing tools and hope from others who are trudging this road. U.K. MMA pioneer Richard “Shaky” Shore joins "The Craic with Petesy Carroll" to discuss why he wanted son Jack Shore to move up to 145 lbs., how far the U.K. scene has come since his humble beginnings in the sport in 2002, and what he is expecting from Makwan Amirkhani at UFC 286. Shore also clears up any doubts as to whether Jack cheated in a game of darts against “sore loser” Ariel Helwani on "The MMA Hour." You've heard about intuitive eating before, now let's chat about intuitive fitness.I am joined by Deanna Beaton, personal trainer and coach to bring us more discussion intuitive fitness/exercise/movement.Deanna shares how emotional eating was a life saver when she didn't know she needed it.We also talk about what intuitive movement is: this idea that your body wants to move and knows when and how much. Deanna shares her idea of the “swingset” that can happen as we heal our relationship with movement, which may include periods where you make peace with movement and make peace with rest. I also share some of my experience with this after I ran a half marathon in Oct 2019 and then did almost no formal exercise for 18 months while I healed my relationship with movement/exercise.I then pick Deanna's brain about how we know our body WANTS to move. Spoiler: any time you notice the words SHOULD, HAVE TO, or MUST that's a good indicator that you are not engaging in intuitive movement. We close the episode with Deanna sharing what person training is, why a person would want a trainer, and the differences between training and coaching. I love Deanna's approach to training and coaching because there is no shame if you don't do a workout as planned. You can find Deanna on Instagram and her website. Are you stuck on the swing set? On June 17th 2011, Sasha Courey lost her battle to Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and died by suicide at the age of 20. Sasha was a scholarship athlete and a gifted student with a promising future. The pain associated with the BPD was too great and the system failed to support her needs. Sasha struggled to understand why the treatment that was “air to breathe” was so expensive and difficult to locate. Sasha's family created the Sashbear Foundation in her legacy, and have been changing lives through advocacy and skills training ever since Sasha's tragic passing. In this episode Sara and Laurie chat with Sasha's mom Lynn (Sashbear's Founder and President) about founding the Sashbear Foundation, how they support families, and her perspective of Sasha's story. Particularly moving is Lynn's reflections on how she would have done things differently with the skills she has been able to learn in the last decade. Dylan was born in San Diego, CA, where he spent the majority of his first 30 years; moving to the NEPA region in 2018. A person in long-term recovery, and a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Dylan understands the importance of social connectedness and community.Initially getting sober in 2011, Dylan had difficulty finding work and took a volunteer position at Being Alive San Diego where he helped those affected by HIV/AIDS gain access to life-sustaining medications and other community support services as a Peer Advocate.Through this experience, the fire to help others was ignited and Dylan was encouraged by his family and friends to go back to school. In 2013, Dylan obtained his GED; it took another 2 years for him to build up the courage to register for classes. In 2015 with the support of his peers in 12-step recovery programs, he started his journey in higher education at Grossmont and Cuyamaca Community Colleges in San Diego, where he eventually made the Dean's List every semester before graduating in May of 2018 with two Associate's Degree in Social Work and Social and Behavioral Sciences.Dylan applied to, and was accepted, to Penn State Wilkes-Barre, after following his now-husband back to his home in Pennsylvania. In 2020, Dylan graduated from Penn State with his Bachelor's Degree in Rehabilitation and Human Services, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA and earning the Luzerne County Council on Adult Higher Education's Outstanding Adult Learner of the Year Award. Dylan is currently a graduate student at Marywood University's School of Social Work.Since arriving in Pennsylvania, Dylan has worked in a variety of positions in the drug and alcohol treatment industry, and for the last three-in-a-half years has been at Brookdale Premier Addiction Recovery in Scotrun, PA working as a Family Counselor. In addition to his work as a Family Counselor, Dylan serves as the Founder and Executive Director of NEPA Pride Coalition, a new non-profit dedicated to enhancing the lives of LGBTQIA+ individuals and families in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and surrounding areas in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Dylan is lucky enough to use his passion for helping others by giving back to his community. He also understands that LGBTQIA+ individuals experience substance use and other mental health conditions at disproportionately higher rates than the general public and looks forward to the years of services ahead serving his community through education, awareness, and facilitating access to affirming and supportive services.Dylan lives in Larksville with his husband, Gerard.Visit and Like the Coalition FB page! The Eating Disorder Diaries PodcastIf you have an eating disorder, you are not alone. And if you get stubborn and dig your heels in because you said you'd do it this way even when that's not working, all that does is disadvantage you and the progress you could be making if you weren't setting yourself up to fail"For the full show notes and transcript for this episode, visit the website at Overcome Compulsive Hoarding / http://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/ Become a Dehoarding Darling https://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/darlingQuestions to ask when dehoarding: https://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/podquestionsTwitter: @ThatHoarderMastodon: @ThatHoarder@mastodon.onlineTikTok: @thathoarderoch https://www.tiktok.com/@thathoarderochFacebook: Overcome Compulsive Hoarding with That Hoarder / https://www.facebook.com/Overcome-Compulsive-Hoarding-with-That-Hoarder-104370761703319Pinterest: That Hoarder / https://www.pinterest.com/ThatHoarderYouTube: Overcome Compulsive Hoarding with That Hoarder / https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSxMqB_fGckbGOQZpkl6l9gReddit: Overcome Compulsive Hoarding with That Hoarder / https://www.reddit.com/r/overcomehoarding/Help out: Support this project / http://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/support-this-project/The Eating Disorder Diaries PodcastIf you have an eating disorder, you are not alone. I recently had a client ask me about the "Superman" exercise on the reformer. This worried me, as there is no exercise by that name. There are a few things I thought of - swimming prep on the long box and swan. So I went on YouTube and searched, and saw so many scary things! The only actual Pilates exercise I saw was the Long Stretch, incorrectly named Superman. There is a specific language to Pilates - Joe named the exercises, the apparatus, and certain cues and principles. And when we don't use the specific language, it can confuse our clients and possibly lead to injury.Resources:Pilates Teacher Mastermind® VIP - https://lyndalippin.com/pilates-teacher-mastermindAndrea Maida - https://pilatesandrea.com/Lesley Powell - https://www.movementsafoot.com/Find me:Website - https://lyndalippin.comInstagram - https://instagram.com/lyndalippinFacebook - https://facebook.com/lyndalippinpilatesPinterest - https://pinterest.com/lyndalippinLinkedIn - https://linkedin.com/in/lyndalippinThe Eating Disorder Diaries PodcastIf you have an eating disorder, you are not alone.
