The Ig Nobel awards are a salute to achievements that, in the words of the organizers, “make people laugh, then think.” Each year, the editors of the science humor magazine Annals of Improbable Research choose 10 lucky(?) winners who have unusual achievements in science, medicine, and other fields. This year's awards were presented in a theatrical extravaganza in an MIT lecture hall in September. They included awards for studying coin flipping (including hundreds of thousands of real coin flips), the movements of a dead trout, and an opera about Murphy's Law. In a Science Friday holiday tradition, Ira hosts an hour of highlights from the ceremony.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Science correspondent Siouxsie Wiles joins Kathryn to talk about new research into a potential vaccine against autoimmune diseases, why cats love tuna so much and it's IgNobel time - when the best of the weird research is celebrated. It includes a robot study based on dead spiders, a toilet that monitors your health and jamais vu - that feeling when something familiar is suddenly...unfamiliar. Associate Professor Dr Siouxsie Wiles is the head of Bioluminescent Superbugs Lab at the University of Auckland
It's the IgNobels! Michael Edwards at Science East will join us to talk through his favourite winners of this year's odd science prize.
This week Broderick dives into the quirky world of the Ignobel Prizes. With talking cats, old chewing gum and beard research we hope this episode will make you laugh and make you think!
Salve, caros Laureados! Fica aí a grande dúvida.
PUBLIC HEALTH PRIZESeven doctors in Thailand for the medical techniques described in their report “Surgical Management of an Epidemic of Penile Amputations in Siam” — techniques which they recommend, except in cases where the amputated penis had been partially eaten by a duck.Reattachment of the penis.
