Species of salamander (Ambystoma mexicanum)
POPULARITY
The axolotl is a salamander that always appears to be smiling, making them popular as aquarium pets or as characters in video games like Minecraft. But the species is endangered in their natural habitat in Mexico, where researchers are working hard to preserve them.

Why are there so many axolotls in fishtanks, and so few in the wild? That's what Maximiliano wants to know. You may have found axolotls in the lush caves of Minecraft, but in real life, they live in the lakes and canals of Xochimilco, near Mexico City. But the species is slowly disappearing from its native habitat. Axolotl veterinarian Horacio Mena takes us on a journey to Xochimilco to find out what scientists are doing to save these adorable amphibians.
In this episode of the I Can't Sleep Podcast, drift off while learning about axolotls, Lake Xochimilco, and Lake Texcoco. Why three topics this time? Well, the first two weren't quite long enough, so here we are. Thankfully, they're all connected—axolotls and their habitats. These fascinating creatures are even more incredible than I expected—they can regrow limbs and parts of their brain! Amazing, right? Anyway, I know I just hyped this one up, so send me a message if you made it all the way through without falling asleep. Happy sleeping! Got a topic you're dying to hear? Solaris, a brand-new creative project which brings audiences on a journey through the life stages of a star, will open for its world premiere during Science Week at the Marina Market in Cork on 10 November 2024. To celebrate Science Week, the public is encouraged to visit Solaris and discover the journey of a star, from its birth to its explosive transformation into a pulsar. An exciting new kinetic sculpture from the collective, Axolotl, Solaris explores the wondrous life cycle of the celestial bodies that fill the night sky. Solaris is a 2.5 metre sphere containing thousands of individually mappable LEDs, which will display beautiful visual imagery that is accompanied by voiceovers from very special guests, including comedian Dara Ó'Briain, to tell the story of the star's journey. To launch Science Week 2024, Solaris will be on display in Marina Market in Cork City from Sunday, 10 November, until Tuesday, 12 November, before it heads to Saint Nicholas' Church in Galway, 14-17 November. Dr Ruth Freeman, Director of Science for Society, Research Ireland, said: "As part of Science Week, we are delighted to partner with Axolotl to bring Solaris to Cork and Galway. Taking the audience through the different generations of a star perfectly encapsulates this year's Science Week theme of Regeneration, and the voiceover from some special guests makes it a very memorable experience. I would encourage everyone to come and visit the sculpture when it world premieres on Sunday, 10 November until 12 November in Marina Market in Cork and then in Saint Nicholas' Church in Galway, 14-17 November." Richard Babington, Creative Director, Solaris, said: "Solaris has been a fascinating project to develop, exploring the scientific magic behind the lifecycle of a star and translating that into a visual installation using light, audio and kinetics. We've been lucky enough to collaborate with some brilliant partners and eagerly await the chance to share it with an audience." Supported by Research Ireland, Science Week, the annual week-long celebration of science will take place across Ireland from 10-17 November, and this year, the theme is Regeneration. With hundreds of events taking place nationwide this Science Week, there is something for everyone - whether you're passionate about protecting our environment, biodiversity, our future health, or using technology like generative AI in our everyday lives.
Another return to a classic, the Axolotl!! YOU WANT to know about this special little creature. One of our first 100 episodes, we covered this species and are still mind blown about their incredible physiology! One of nature's most amazing creatures, the Axolotl, has the ability to regenerate lost limbs and other body tissues. Sadly, these amphibians are almost extinct in the wild, and scientists are racing to discover its secrets, secrets that could benefit humans and other species. ------------------------------------------------------------- Another thank you to all our Patreon supporters. The Care & Feeding team is off for Labor Day — but we won't let that stop you from hearing something great from elsewhere in the Slateiverse. So: we're handing the mic over to our friends at Decoder Ring! Axolotls. Narwhals. Llamas. Sloths. Every few years, it seems like American kids and parents collectively decide they cannot get enough of a creature that makes teddy bears seem impossibly quaint. In today's episode we're going to swim after the axolotl, as it takes us to some far-flung and unexpected places, to understand how it came to rule the stuffed animal kingdom. Though the answer absolutely has to do with parents eager to please their children at the gift shop, it's bigger than that. The insatiable hunger for novelty that is bound up with the axolotl — well, that has to do with all of us. This episode was written by Willa Paskin. It was produced by Katie Shepherd. It was edited by Evan Chung. We produce Decoder Ring with Max Freedman. Derek John is Executive Producer. Merritt Jacob is Senior Technical Director. In this episode you'll hear from Elaine Kollias who works with Folkmanis Puppets, Diana Laura Vasquez Mendoza who is a biologist at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Dr. Jessica Whited who is a professor at Harvard, Gerhard Runken who is the executive vice president of global brand and marketing for Jazwares, and Laura Wattenberg who is a baby name expert. Thank you to our translator Ezequiel Andino, as well as Luis Zambrano, Kelley Garnier, and Alejandra Escobar. And if you'd like to help the wild Axolotl, here is the conservation project where Diana works and they accept donations. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This Week in Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Podcast
Today, we're joined by Hamel Husain, founder of Parlance Labs, to discuss the ins and outs of building real-world products using large language models (LLMs). We kick things off discussing novel applications of LLMs and how to think about modern AI user experiences. We then dig into the key challenge faced by LLM developers—how to iterate from a snazzy demo or proof-of-concept to a working LLM-based application. We discuss the pros, cons, and role of fine-tuning LLMs and dig into when to use this technique. We cover the fine-tuning process, common pitfalls in evaluation—such as relying too heavily on generic tools and missing the nuances of specific use cases, open-source LLM fine-tuning tools like Axolotl, the use of LoRA adapters, and more. Hamel also shares insights on model optimization and inference frameworks and how developers should approach these tools. Finally, we dig into how to use systematic evaluation techniques to guide the improvement of your LLM application, the importance of data generation and curation, and the parallels to traditional software engineering practices. Today on Wonder, we're going in search of a creature that lives in the long tree-lined canals of Lake Xochimilco that stretch out of Mexico city. The always-smiling axolotl, a brown or pink amphibian with feathery gills, played a starring role in one of the Aztecs creation myths —perhaps thanks to its remarkable ability to regenerate. In fact, these delicate-looking salamanders are the peter-pan of the animal kingdom, never transforming beyond their juvenile state. Now, it's time for a moment of serenity on the shores of Lake Xochimilco. Put on your headphones, close your eyes, and take five minutes to yourself — to breathe, learn, and wonder. This is Wonder, a weekly five-minute audio experience designed to transport you far away from the chaos of everyday life. Wonder is a Brazen production. To find out more visit brazen.fm/wonder.
