Homes Not Jails does public actions as well as legislative advocacy and squatting (occupying empty buildings for free). Homes Not Jails groups do "housing takeovers", acts of civil disobedience in which vacant buildings are publicly occupied, to demonstrate the availability of vacant property and to advocate that it be used for housing. The group has done many such occupations. Homes Not Jails has also done and assisted with hundreds of "covert" squats in which vacant buildings are broken into so that people in need of housing can move in.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

On today's show we discuss what has happened to dissent, political resistance, truth telling in the Canadian media - a history of descent into Hades? GUEST OVERVIEW: After being disenchanted with corporate news, Chris Cook began a career producing alternative media; first in radio, then migrating into the nascent online world through the Independent Media Center movement, and Peace Earth & Justice (PEJNews) site. In 2006 he took on the editor's role at Pacific Free Press news, sister site to Richard Kastelein's Atlantic Free Press. Now cancelled from his long-time radio sinecure, the Ape endures, producing weekly programs at Gorilla-Radio.com and GRadio.Substack.com
Victor Pickard is a professor of media policy and political economy at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication. He is also the co-director of the university's Media, Inequality and Change center. He has been writing about the crisis facing journalism for over a decade and recently published a book titled, “Democracy Without Journalism?: Confronting the Misinformation Society.” Along with his colleague Timothy Neff, Victor recently published an article in the Columbia Journalism Review about the lack of funding the American government has traditionally offered publicly funded media (the topic of this episode). Victor previously taught at NYU and the University of Virginia, and has worked in Washington D.C. for various media reform organizations and think tanks. Victor offered a shoutout to the Independent Media Center, a global network of activist journalists that launched in 1999. Their slogan is: "Don't Hate the Media, Become the Media!" A conversation between Cliff Conner and Sarah Lazare about the history of scientific corruption and abuse and prospects for change today. ———————————————— The atomic bombs that ended World War II heralded the rise of the United States to first place in the realm of science. Expectations of what American science and technology could accomplish in an era of peace were virtually unlimited. Disease would be conquered and hunger eradicated. New industries and inventions would create global prosperity, and the rockets that had carried German bombs would instead extend human exploration to the moon and beyond. Seventy-five years later, we look back and wonder: What happened to the dream? That's the question Cliff Conner explores in his new book, The Tragedy of American Science. The book's subtitle, From Truman to Trump, defines the timeline of this history of scientific corruption and abuse—from the nuclear bombs that obliterated two Japanese cities, through the Cold War and the never-ending “War on Terror,” to the existential threat posed by global warming and the pandemic today. It's not a happy story, but it's one that must be confronted if the tragedy is to be overcome. Clifford D. Conner is a historian of science at the School of Professional Studies, CUNY Graduate Center. He is the author of A People's History of Science (Bold Type Books, 2005) and biographies of three revolutionaries: Jean Paul Marat, Arthur O'Connor, and Colonel Despard. This is part one of a two-part interview with @Rabble (https://about.me/rabble) (Evan Henshaw Plath) -- activist technologist, co-founder of Indymedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_Media_Center) , and one of the originators of Twitter. We discuss the origins of Twitter in the protest organisation tool TxtMob (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TXTMob) ; Evan's work developing Indymedia and the early days of tech's interaction with activism; how social media is continuing to mutate politics, for better and worse; how the sorting algorithms developed by Big Social are becoming indelibly embedded in our world -- and finally Evan introduces the subject of part two: Silicon Valley's hidden mission to restructure the world's institutions via software.
“I remember walking home from that huge protest and feeling this sense of huge hope in the air…And it was just really exciting and it felt like things actually could change.” –Becca Shaw Glazer In this episode, we speak with activists who participated in protests against the World Trade Organization in the 1990s and 2000s. The 1999 Seattle protest against the WTO is often seen as the beginning of a worldwide anti-globalization movement and the Indymedia movement. About 40,000 people took to the streets to express their dissent, and protestors successfully blocked delegates from entering the convention center, delaying the meeting. The protests became known as “The Battle of Seattle” because of the police violence that ensued in response. We focus on the protests that took place in Seattle, and then share an interview with someone who participated in WTO protests in Cancun, one of the protests that took place globally as a result. A huge thank you to our interviewees for speaking with us for this episode: Becca Shaw Glaser, Danielle Chynoweth, Mark Enslin, and Celeste. Todd Wolfson’s book, Digital Rebellion: The Birth of the Cyber Left (University of Illinois Press, 2014) examines the impact of new media and communication technologies on the spatial, strategic, and organizational fabric of social movements. Wolfson explores how aspects of the mid-1990s Zapatistas movement—network organizational structure, participatory democratic governance, and the use of communication tools as a binding agent—became essential parts of Indymedia and other Cyber Left organizations. From there he uses oral interviews and other rich ethnographic data to chart the media-based think tanks and experiments that continued the Cyber Left’s evolution through the Independent Media Center’s birth around the 1999 WTO protests in Seattle. Melding virtual and traditional ethnographic practice to explore the Cyber Left’s cultural logic, Wolfson maps the social, spatial and communicative structure of the Indymedia network and details its operations on the local, national and global level. He looks at the participatory democracy that governs global social movements and the ways democracy and decentralization have come into tension, and how “the switchboard of struggle” conducts stories from the hyper-local and disperses them worldwide. As he shows, understanding the intersection of Indymedia and the Global Social Justice Movement illuminates their foundational role in the Occupy struggle and other emergent movements that have re-energized radical politics. In this episode, Richard Rowley talks to Monica Castillo about his new documentary Dirty Wars. The film is loosely based on the book of the same name and follows investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill around the world as he investigates a side of the War on Terror most media outlets rarely cover: drone strikes, assassinations, U.S.-backed warlords, and more. Rowley talks with Monica about the three-year process of making the film and what changes he hopes to inspire. SHOW NOTES: About Our Guest: Richard Rowley has made multiple award-winning documentary features including Fourth World War and This Is What Democracy Looks Like. His shorts and news reports are also regularly featured on leading outlets including Al Jazeera, BBC, CBC, CNN International, Democracy Now!, and PBS.
