The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Racist Suspect Joel Whitney. Classified as a White Man, Whitney is a Brooklyn, NY writer whose work has been featured in The New York Times, The Daily Beast, The Baffler, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, and Boston Review to name a few. He's "a former features editor at Al Jazeera America and a founder and former editor-in-chief at Guernica." Gus originally hoped to speak with Whitney about his 2016 publication, Finks: How the CIA Tricked the World's Best Writers. I'm not quite sure what my original motivation was for exploring this text - could have been Rev. Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple or Soundtrack to a Coup d'État. Anyway, by the time we got our calendars synchronized, Mr. Whitney had written another book, Flights: Radicals on the Run. Most of the featured subjects who had to flee oppression are Victims of White Supremacy like: Minister Malcolm X, Paul Robeson, Dr. Angela Davis, and Leonard Peltier - who recently benefited from a commuted sentence from departing President Biden. During the broadcast, Mr. Whitney repeated the tacky refrain that White people are also "held back" by Racism. He could only list two trifling ways that the System of White Supremacy holds him down. There are few more authoritative American journalists than the longtime NPR and PBS host Ray Suarez. So it was a real treat to sit down with Ray earlier this month in Washington DC to talk broadly about his and his family's experience as American immigrants from Puerto Rico. Suarez is part of that golden generation of late twentieth century American journalists who exemplified both trust and authority in their coverage of the news. And listening to him today is a reminder of what America has lost because of its failure to replace guys like Suarez with a young generation of equally trusted and authoritative journalists. Ray Suarez is the host of the public radio program and podcast "On Shifting Ground," produced by Commonwealth Club-World Affairs and KQED-FM. His next book, on the modern era of American immigration, We Are Home: Becoming American in the 21st Century, is published by Little, Brown. He has been a visiting professor of Political Science at NYU Shanghai, and the John McCloy Visiting Professor of American Studies at Amherst College. He is a graduate of New York University and the University of Chicago. Earlier in his career, Suarez was the host of the daily news program "Inside Story" from Al Jazeera America, Chief National Correspondent for The PBS NewsHour, and the host of "Talk of the Nation" from NPR. In this role, he manages, develops, and leads the coalition, advocacy, and research activities of the Center, which is one of the most effective advocates for Free Market Environmentalism. Before joining CEI as Deputy Director in March, 2023, Daren was a Senior Research Fellow in Environmental Policy and Regulation at the Heritage Foundation, where he played a leading role in the launch of the organization's new energy and environment center, and created and hosted the Heritage Foundation's energy and environment podcast the “PowerCast.” During his decade at Heritage, Daren wrote about energy and environmental policy, food and agricultural policy (including editing and co-authoring the book Farms and Free Enterprise), regulation, and trade among other topics. At the time it was sold to Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation in 1993, Delphi had been profitable for years and was among the four largest social networks, along with AOL, CompuServe and Prodigy. In 1986, while CEO of Delphi, Wes launched a spinoff, Global Villages, Inc. to serve magazine publishers and business clients with their own private-label social networks. Wes focused the attention of his new team on the need for reliable identities of individuals on the Internet, starting with the development of the VIVOS Enrollment Workstation. While developing VIVOS, Wes began collecting source material for a book about a hypothetical world public key infrastructure, built upon digital certificates representing measurably reliable identities, which would bring authenticity to online interactions and privacy to individuals. As the book began to take shape Wes was introduced to a group at the International Telecommunication Union that was attempting to implement a world PKI that was similar to the one he envisioned. Wes was subsequently appointed to the High Level Experts Group at the ITU's Global Cybersecurity Agenda. In an address in 2008 to the United Nations World Summit on Information Society in Geneva, Wes introduced the City of Osmio, a new certification authority. In this episode of "How You Create," I am joined by documentary photographer Wesaam Al-Badry, 2023 Google Pixel & Aperture Creator Labs Photo Fund grant recipient. Wesaam, born in Nasiriyah, Iraq, fled to Saudi Arabia and lived in refugee camps for 4 and half years at the outset of what became known as the Gulf War. In late 1994, Wesaam and his family were relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska. Both his time in refugee camps, his working class upbringing in Nebraska, and late his attainment of master's in New Media journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, and his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute culminate in his work which depicts honest moments of the lives of those often absent from art institutes, and a deep belief in the integrity and responsibility of his work. Dr. Kris Marsh received her Ph.D. from the University of Southern California in 2005. She was a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Carolina Population Center at the University of North Carolina before joining the faculty of Maryland where she has been tenured since 2014. Dr. Marsh's general areas of expertise are the Black middle class, demography, racial residential segregation, and education. She has combined these interests to develop a research agenda that is divided into two broad areas: avenues into the Black middle class and consequences of being in the Black middle class. Currently, Dr. Marsh has a book forthcoming with Cambridge University Press that examines the mental and physical health, wealth, residential choices and dating practices of an emerging Black middle class that is single and living alone. Dr. Marsh is also in the beginning stages of a book that interrogates navigating racism, sexism, and classism among Black golfers. Professor Marsh teaches courses on Research Methods, Critical Race Theory, Racial Residential Segregation, and Intersectionality. She has been a visiting scholar at the University of Southern California, the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and the University of Johannesburg. Dr. Marsh has served as a contributor to CNN in America, the Associated Press, NBC Washington, and Al Jazeera America and is frequently asked to contribute to the Washington Post. She served as the Secretary of the District of Columbia Sociological Society and the Managing Editor of Issues in Race & Society. Dr. Marsh was awarded the Jacquelyn Johnson Jackson Early Career Award from the Association of Black Sociologists in 2015 and received the Core Fulbright U.S. Scholar award for 2017. Dr. Marsh was elected Chair of the Section on Race, Gender and Class of the American Sociological Association in 2019. Since late 2015, Dr. Marsh has been the driving force behind an implicit bias training with various police departments in the State of Maryland. Dr. Marsh was appointed to the Prince George's County Police Reform Task Force in 2020 and was the Chair of the subcommittee on recruiting, hiring, training, promotions/evaluations, human resource, and mental health. She is the CEO of Soledad O'Brien Productions, a multi-platform media production company dedicated to telling empowering and authentic stories on a range of social issues and a thought leader whose public engagement garners wide attention.  O'Brien has had national impact with her books and speeches, and her presence on the nation's op-ed pages, including the New York Times and Huffington Post. She is very active on social media, particularly Twitter where she has over 1.3 million followers.   O'Brien currently anchors and produces the Hearst Television political magazine program “Matter of Fact with Soledad O'Brien” which is distributed by Sony Pictures. She also reports regularly for HBO's “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.”   She has anchored shows on CNN, MSNBC and NBC, and hosted projects for Fox and A&E. O'Brien has contributed to the three major broadcast networks, Oxygen, Nat Geo, the PBS NewsHour and WebMD. She was a special correspondent on Al Jazeera America's news program, America Tonight, and produced several documentaries on social issues for the network. Earlier in her career, O'Brien anchored a show for MSNBC, before moving on to co-anchor NBC's “Weekend Today” and contributing segments to the “Today” show and “NBC Nightly News.” In 2003, O'Brien transitioned to CNN, where she was the face of CNN's morning news shows for many years and a frequent reporter and analyst for breaking news stories and election coverage. She also anchored the CNN documentary unit, where she created the “In America” documentary series “Black in America” and “Latino in America” which she continued to produce under Soledad O'Brien Productions as speaking tours. O'Brien's was recognized with three Emmy awards — for her coverage of the Haiti earthquake, the 2012 election and a series called “Kids and Race.” She was also honored twice with the George Foster Peabody award for her coverage of Hurricane Katrina and her reporting on the BP Gulf Coast Oil Spill. Her reporting on the Southeast Asia tsunami garnered CNN an Alfred I. DuPont Award.  Upon founding Soledad O'Brien Productions, she continued to produce documentaries and series on topics that included youth incarceration, police brutality, veterans with PTSD and the opioid epidemic for Al Jazeera, CNN and the PBS NewsHour.  Besides HBO Real Sports and Matter of Fact, O'Brien hosted “American Injustice” a BET Town Hall on the future of criminal justice reform. She was a host of the A&E special “Shining a Light: Conversations on Race in America.” She was the Host and Executive Producer of the Oxygen series “Mysteries & Scandals” as well as “O.J. Simpson: The Lost Confession” and “Who Shot Biggie and Tupac,” both for Fox. She was also host of National Geographic Channel's “Live From Space” and moderator and executive producer of the annual National Geographic Bee. She was Executive Producer of the Lifetime Billboard Music Awards. She has served as Chair of the board of The After-School Corporation (now ExpandED Schools), and as a director on the boards of the Rand Corporation and the National Archives. She was a Harvard University Graduate School of Education, Distinguished Visiting Fellow. O'Brien frequently speaks on a variety of social issues at college campuses and corporate events. She was named on People magazine's list of the 50 Most Beautiful People in 2001 and was on People en Español′s 50 Most Beautiful list in 2004. She was named to Irish American magazine's “Top 100 Irish Americans” on two occasions, and was on Black Enterprise magazine's 2005 Hot List. Also in 2005, she was awarded Groundbreaking Latina of the Year by Catalina magazine. In 2006 she was featured in the Newsweek cover story “15 People Who Make America Great”.  She is the author of two books, her critically acclaimed memoir “The Next Big Story” and “Latino in America.” In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, O'Brien and her husband, Brad, created the PowHERful Foundation to help young women get to and through college. The foundation hosts the PowHerful conferences that support hundreds of young women with mentoring programs, professional advice and other services.   She lives in New York with her husband and four children. Suarez was with PBS' NewsHour from 1999 to 2013, most recently as its chief national correspondent. He hosted National Public Radio's Talk of the Nation for six years before joining PBS. Suarez also spent seven years reporting for Chicago's NBC-owned station WMAQ-TV. Suarez began his career as a Los Angeles correspondent for CNN, a producer for the ABC Radio Network in New York and a reporter for CBS Radio in Rome.In 2010 Suarez was inducted into the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Hall of Fame. He is a co-recipient of two Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Awards for NPR's on-site coverage of the first multi-racial elections in South Africa and of the first 100 days of the 104th Congress. Suarez is the author of the critically acclaimed “Latino Americans,” the companion book to the PBS documentary series of the same name that was published in 2013. Segall graduated from Emory University, Phi Beta Kappa 27  and summa cum laude, and from Vanderbilt Law School, where he was the research editor for the Law Review and member of Order of the Coif. He clerked for the Chief Judge Charles Moye Jr. for the Northern District of Georgia, and Albert J. Henderson of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. After his clerkships, Segall worked for Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and the U.S. Department of Justice, before joining the Georgia State faculty in 1991. Segall teaches federal courts and constitutional law I and II. He is the author of the books Originalism as Faith and Supreme Myths: Why the Supreme Court is not a Court and its Justices are not Judges. His articles on constitutional law have appeared in, among others, the Harvard Law Review Forum, the Stanford Law Review On Line, the UCLA Law Review, the George Washington Law Review, the Washington University Law Review, the University of Pennsylvania Journal of Constitutional Law, the Northwestern University Law Review Colloquy, and Constitutional Commentary among many others. Segall's op-eds and essays have appeared in the New York Times, the LA Times, The Atlantic, SLATE, Vox, Salon, and the Daily Beast, among others.
