Leftwing Political Projects Are Not Friendship Circles

Recently, we've noticed an unhelpful trend: namely, people coming to left-wing and progressive political movements not primarily with the aim of changing society, but with the goal of making new friends. As a result, this phenomenon combined with the internal culture the left has created over the decades has allowed socially insufferable, stunted, and destructive people to dominate left social circles. The left's insistence on 'inclusion' often means including people in our movements who turn off the very people we need: poor and working-class folks. This series will cover a range of issues concerning political organizing. In this episode, Vince Emanuele examines the introduction to Jane McAlevey's book, No Shortcuts: Organizing for Power in the New Gilded Age. In this segment, Vince discusses the fundamental difference between organizing in a structure-based setting vs. a self-selected setting. Structure-based organizing includes the workplace, houses of worship, neighborhoods, and precincts (constituencies bounded and measurable). Self-selected organizing includes groups like Black Lives Matter, Democratic Socialists of America, and Occupy Wall Street (constituencies who already self-identify and are bound by no measurable structure). Roger Waters is Pink Floyd's grand conceptualist, the driving force behind such albums as 'Dark Side of the Moon,' 'Wish You Were Here,' and 'The Wall.' In the wake of Syd Barrett's departure, Waters emerged as a formidable songwriter, but it's this stretch of '70s albums -- each one nearly symphonic in its reach -- that established him as a distinctive, idiosyncratic voice within rock, one with a sober morality and sardonic sense of humor. Waters left Pink Floyd after 1983's 'The Final Cut,' after which he recorded a triptych of concept albums -- 'The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking,' 'Radio K.A.O.S.,' and 'Amused to Death' -- addressing personal and political struggles in the modern world. His long spell without new albums was broken in 2017 with the release of Is 'This the Life We Really Want?' Roger is a leading dissident voice and one of the strongest proponents of Palestinian rights in the world today. Dr. Rose then contacted a former colleague who had abandoned his practice due to a failed experiment that left former Dr. Brandon Michael Stringer into a muted beast that can only speak through rhythmic patterns. However, with Dr. Stringer’s devolved state he is capable of focusing energy into drums for a raw power Dr. Rose so desperately craved to balance his formula. Now, being lab dwellers, they needed a spokesman to sell their formula. Someone with talent, charisma, nuance, and debonair to take their product to the next level! Unfortunately, they were swindled by a character named “Bret, Son of Denver” to front their project... at least he’s loud and can play some keys.
