158: Admiral William McRaven Who Oversaw the Raids that Killed Osama Bin Laden and Captured Saddam Hussein | How Do You Earn Respect?

Meikles & Dimes

Admiral McRaven is a four-star admiral who oversaw the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden; his forces were responsible for the capture of Saddam Hussein; and he also led the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips, who was held hostage by Somali pirates (which became the basis for the blockbuster movie, Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks). As commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, Admiral McRaven led a force of 72,000 men and women and was responsible for conducting counter-terrorism operations worldwide. After his military career, he served as chancellor of the University of Texas System, overseeing 14 institutions, 220,000 students, 20,000 faculty and more than 80,000 health care professionals, researchers, and staff. In 2014, he gave a commencement speech at the University of Texas that went viral, titled, “If You Want To Change The World, Start Off By Making Your Bed.”   He is also the author of several books, including Sea Stories: My Life in Special Operations and the New York Times Bestseller, Make Your Bed. In this episode we discuss the following: When Admiral McRaven asked his Master Chief how to earn the respect of the soldiers, he responded: “Work hard. Come early. Stay late. Work on the weekends.” You don't have to be the most talented to succeed. But regardless of talent, everyone can work hard. You will earn the respect of others if they know you are working hard on their behalf. Know your business. As a Navy SEAL that meant knowing all about weapons, diving, and demolition. It also meant knowing the details of the playbook. For example, if you're in an ambush, first guy goes left, second guy goes right. When Admiral McRaven's solider accidentally blew off the leg of his colleague, the Master Chief wanted to go relatively easy on the solider. But Admiral McRaven believed they needed to “throw the book at him.” And through the tough love of accountability, the solider bounced back and became Sailor of the Year. How do you gain respect of those you lead? Work hard and be a good person. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. When I asked Admiral McRaven, “Did you ever get scared?” he laughed out loud: “Yeah, of course. You're scared all the time.” But he was able to fall back on his training and barricade his fears to help him get through countless life-threatening situations.   Connect on Social Media: X: https://twitter.com/nate_meikle Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@MeiklesnDimes LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/natemeikle/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nate_meikle/

According to former Guantanamo Bay detainee Mansoor Adayfi, DeSantis oversaw torture in Guantanamo, greenlighting everything from beatings to forced feedings of hunger-striking detainees. After his stint in Guantanamo, DeSantis was deployed to Fallujah to act as the US military's human rights lawyer during the Second Gulf War. On today's episode, Alan talks with church planting guru Peyton Jones about how planting and leading churches needs to become more team-driven and team-empowered.  About Peyton I started in Huntington Beach at a megachurch, then went to Wales, and served as the evangelist at Lloyd-Jones's church Sandfields, and started planting churches in public spaces, like Starbucks. Returning back to the States, I planted a multiplying church in downtown Long Beach. I founded New Breed Church Planting Network which continues to train front-line 1st century style apostolic church planters, and the rest is history. I've served in collegiate campus churches, rural and urban churches, legacy churches, churches in public space…you name it. In a box, with a fox, I have planted Sam I am. Some of the things I've done over the years that may help you: Wrote a few books: Church Plantology: The Art and Science of Planting Churches, Church Zero: Raising 1st Century Churches From the Ashes of the 21st Century Church, and Reaching The Unreached: Becoming Raiders of the Lost Art. Started two of the biggest church planting podcasts - Hardcore Church Planting and The Church Planter Podcast. Co-founded Church Planter Magazine. Hired by Mac Lake, I revamped the Send Network Training, and produced professional training videos. Oversaw church planter training for the Western U.S. for the Send Network.  Stayed married all this time, and adopted two beautiful girls. Once swatted five with one blow on a video game no one plays anymore. It was epic. You shoulda seen it. My goal in life is to expand your mind to think like believers in the 1st century did, and like church leaders in the Developing World, Western Europe, and Persecuted Church have to. That's what drives me in the morning… I'd like to think it's part-caffeine, and mostly Holy Spirit.” Connect with Peyton Books Website Facebook Level your leadership this fall Take your next step this fall with coaching Invest in your leadership by joining free Right Side Up Community Receive weekly leadership tweaks with Tuesday Tuneup Upstream Campaign

PaulBorn Saul in Tarsus which is located in modern day TurkeyJew by birthThe Apostle Paul, sometimes called Saint Paul or Saul of Tarsus, lived from about 5 BCE / 5 CE to about 67 CEDad became a Roman citizen which gave Paul dual citizenship. Being roman had percsActs 16:37-39 37 But Paul said to the officers: “They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out.” 38 The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed. 39 They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city.Highly educated. Until about the midpoint of his life, Paul was a member of the Pharisees, a religious party that emerged during the later Second Temple period. There were two main groups in the Jewish culture Pharisee and  SadduceesPharisee of PhariseeStudent of Gamaliel. Was a very wise man. Acts 22:3  I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city. I studied under Gamaliel and was thoroughly trained in the law of our ancestors. I was just as zealous for God as any of you are today.Gamaliel later saves Paul from persecution Acts 5:34 34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while.Aaron's fav part to the Gamaliel Rant which stands up to time38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”Paul was strict on the law and destined Christians for what he thought was heresy by going against it.Oversaw the first Christian killing of Steven Acts 8:1-31 On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. 2 Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. 3 But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison. At this point Saul would not have believed that Jesus was the messiah. He would not have believed in the resurrection of Jesus. This was probably important because it scattered people and they still proclaimed the name of Jesus everywhere they went. So the word spread even faster, God used the death of Steven to spread his news. Paul's conversion Acts 9:1-6 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”5 “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I a

Jamie Simmonds is the former Director of the Strengthening Grantham, which was the project to relocate the small Queensland town of Gratham following the statewide deadly floods in 2011. The Grantham relocation is now regarded by industry and academics globally as the leading example of a managed retreat. What’s a managed retreat? It’s a policy of slowly moving people and property and communities away from parts of the country that will now be unsafe to live in. Be it because they keep burning down, keep flooding, or are just now underwater because of Sea Level Rise…In his role as director, Jamie successfully implemented an historic, Australian-first land swap process. Oversaw the creation, planning and construction of a new estate of 120 lots. Delivered the project in only 11 months, from the time of the flood event to seeing the first families moving into their new homes, a timeline that has yet to be replicated anywhere else in the world.Jamie’s work includes advising communities on how to adapt to climate change or natural disasters, but also advocates that community mental health support is made a top priority throughout the process of a relocation.Jamie is an American born Australian Citizen who is now based in Brisbane, Australia. Earlier this year he toured towns in the U.S. to view their relocation efforts and advise on how future efforts could be improved, an initiative that will continue as climate adaption continues to grow in urgency. STUFF FROM THE LOFT - Dave Dye

'Recorded any new podcasts lately?' I get asked this a few times every week. The askees range from college attendees to retired adman. As I pick the people I interview, they seem as famous as The Beatles to me, but they're often unknown to the askees. After offering up a name and watching a blank expression appear, I reach for a quick handle, something from culture that I think they'll know. Occasionally it's an ad fact; 'Set Up Fallon before his name was lopped off' (Tom McElligott), but it's better if it's something that's escaped from the pages of Campaign and the various awards annuals and seeped into the culture. A good test is whether it would pique the interest of your parents. For example, mine wouldn't be fussed about who founded Fallon, but they might be interested in the bloke who 'Created those Smash Martians and Cresta Bear ads, yet wasn't John Webster' (Chris Wilkins), or the 'Typographer who used to be in a band with David Bowie' (Dave Wakefield) or maybe the guy who 'Shot all those Gary Lineker Walker's ads' (Paul Weiland). Should I bump into another askee before I post this, and they haven't heard the name Trevor Beattie, the problem wouldn't be trying to think of a cultural link they may know, it will be trying to figure out which one is most relevant to the person in front of me. I could create a very bespoke answer. Because Trevor seems to have had a disproportionate amount of brushes with popular culture. Here's a few that spring to mind: He went to school with UB40. Worked for the bloke who wrote the R-Whites 'Secret Lemonade Drinker'. Did those Weetabix 'Skinhead' ads. Got Bob Hoskins to do the voiceover. Hired by the guy who wrote Campari's 'No, Luton Airport'. Wrote those ads where people turn into Bertie Bassett. Created an Irish Tourist Board campaign featuring Wendy Craig and Billy Beaumont. Wrote 'Cats Like Felix Like Felix' in 1989 (it's still used). Discovered Holly Willoughby for Pretty Polly ad. Wrote ‘Hello Boys’. Shot with Hugh Hudson. Did that 'Cometh The Hour' David Beckham ad. Created that F.C.U.K. campaign. Owns the biggest Muhummad Ali collection in the world. Did a Unicef ad with Nelson Mandela. Persuaded Chris Cunningham to direct his first commercial. Shot an ad with David Lynch. Used John Shuttleworth for Yorkshire Tea ads. Rewrote Lionel Bart's ‘Food, Glorious Food’ for McCain’s ad. Pays for hundreds Veterans to go back to the beaches of Normandy to commemorate D-Day every year. Approved 'Double Life'. Invested in 'Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels'. Bought the original Abbey Road sign. Approved Peter Kay’s John Smith's campaign. Oversaw the marketing for Tony Blair and New Labour for three successful General Election campaigns. Created poster for that film 'Layer Cake'. Hired Zowie Bowie. Produced the cult film ‘Moon’. Made a documentary about Rudolph Nuryev. Produced a documentary about the history of the Spitfire. Producing a film about Brian Epstein. Trekked to the South Pole with Buzz Aldrin. Produced a documentary about Thalidomide (Attacking The Devil). With Harold Evans. Going to space in 2020. (At the time of writing he's desperately trying to make a film about Hilda Ogden.) We had a great chat, hope you enjoy it.

Why has Telstra tanked? For so long, Telstra has been a Market Darling … a great dividend-paying share, almost like the world’s best term deposit…but what has happened? They are out of favour with investors for the past 3 (or so) years…   What has gone wrong: Telstra has warned investors to brace for a profit level at the lower end of its guidance range, but remains committed to a 22-cent total dividend payment. Telstra has blamed "challenging trading conditions" for a pre-tax and interest profit that is now expected to come in at the bottom end of a previously stated $10.1-$10.6 billion range. CEOs and price - History: Ziggy Switkowski – 1999 to 2004 – Oversaw the transition from government sector to privately owned, started in 1997. Went from $9 to $5. Sol Trujilo – 1/7/05 Went from $5 to $3.5 in his first year Back to $4.8 the next year, then down to $4.2 the next year Just before he left - $3 David Thoedy – May 2009 From a price of $3, it went to around $2.50 18 months later (at a low), but from there it rose to $6.50 at the start of 2015 – 5 years of positive gains Andy Penn – April 2015 Dropped from $6.60 to $2.70 2016 Aug – momentum has been on the oversold side Sentiment Competition - last 12 months alone - facing a fourth network operator entrant in mobile, an increasing number of MVNOs [mobile virtual network operators — basically companies that provide services through another telco's network] NBN – The Delays are having a negative effect on expected earnings Aggressively cut costs, with "core fixed costs" expected to decline around 7 per cent this financial year, with about $300 million in restructuring costs. Telstra is ramping up its capital spending on new technology, especially its 5G mobile rollout – 2016 – Announced $3bn in capex (capital expenditure) Fines - $10m of fines, but that is nothing Outages – Few outages nationally in the past few months Financial metrics were near the bottom end of targets Revenue expected to be around the middle of the $27.6-$29.5 billion range Free cash flow near the top, or even above, its $4.2-4.7 billion guidance. Big one: The decrease of dividends Raised Dividends, then cut by 30%! Earnings per share (EPS): Average about 32c per share for 10 years 2018: 29.3 EPS, 22 dividends per share (DPS) – 75% dividend payout ratio (DPR) 2019 – 27.5 EPS, 18.3 DPS – 66% DPR 2020 – 25 EPS, 22 DPS – 88% DPR History has been about 90% DPR The fundamentals Price/earnings ratio (PE ratio) – 8.99 – But what is the future earnings versus current prices? 2019 – 9.8 PE 2020 – 10.8 PE Yield – 10.1% plus FCs Income Coverage 8.96, Debt/Equity – 118.9% Financials – We are back to revenues of 2011 How much of the price is moved by fundamentals – very little! It’s really our response to the drop in dividend payments which has created such a massive decline in the price itself. Telstra are in and out of favour with the market Is it overhyped? They need to turn themselves around in terms of management decisions go, because their success lays in what they are spending the capital expenditure on They are a decent term deposit – Though the price could go down more Will it ever grow again? Competition – Telstra still have a pretty decent market share and are semi protected through regulations
