POPULARITY
In one of the most explosive and revealing conversations of the year, legal scholar and political powerhouse Susan Estrich welcomes Ron Filipkowski — former federal prosecutor, ex-GOP insider, and now one of the most prominent watchdogs of far-right extremism — for a brutally honest discussion about the rapid decline of American political norms. The episode begins with Ron's jaw-dropping political evolution. Once a loyal Republican, Ron served as a Marine, a state prosecutor, and a trusted legal voice within conservative circles. But everything changed with the rise of Donald Trump. Ron recounts in vivid detail the moments that led to his stunning departure from the Republican Party — from watching the erosion of truth and institutional integrity, to the gut-wrenching realization that his party had embraced conspiracy, authoritarianism, and fear over principle.Susan and Ron don't hold back — tackling:
Gaslighting. Gaslighting is a form of psychological abuse that involves manipulating someone into questioning their sanity, memories, or perception of reality. Sounds horrible right? An example of this: a person or institution may say that an activist campaigning for change is irrational or “crazy,” or they may deny biases if someone confronts them about microaggressions. Nobody wants to be gaslit – it makes you feel confused, anxious, and isolated, and we know from research that feeling like that can have a real impact on your mental AND physical health. But here we are, being gaslit by the leaders of our very own United States government. And when we say things like this, I keep coming back to George Orwell's quote from 1984 - or was it 2025? - which says: “The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.” This is exactly what's happening now. So - how do we keep ourselves from being fooled? How do we make sure that our collective mental and physical health as a nation doesn't go down the toilet? We need to gather evidence to counteract the denial, the trivializing, the stereotyping that's happening. So, in this episode, that's what we're going to do. Gather evidence to make sure you have all the info you need to stand up and push back against people who say what's happening is normal. Educate yourselves and then each other because mainstream media is covering the chaos. We (the collective we, I mean) have to cover the truth. To be clear: nothing that's happening now is normal. And we cannot be gaslit into thinking it is. What to listen for: Why the government is not actually bloated, and the mass firings are illegal How tariffs are taxes, which will be increasing prices for YOU at the register - for eggs, houses, appliances, and more Safety and security are at risk - both domestically with air traffic concerns, all the way to the shift in our international world order - and with the reduction in healthcare and schooling, among other things sure to come What you can do, both locally and through calling your representatives. SERIES 2 EPISODE 177: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: A lawyer yelling "you're a liar" at a witness does not make him a liar, despite what Anderson Cooper says. The storyline before the Trump Trial began was: If Michael Cohen keeps his cool when Todd Blanche screams at him, he'll prevail. He did it, and yet the networks rushed to ignore it. Prosecutors have already said they'll only need about an hour of re-direct of Cohen next Monday, meaning that's all the time they expect to require to polish him back up. They are still winning - plus there is still the wild card that in his perpetual over-confidence Trump may testify. And yet that's not where I start because sometimes the most important story and the most interesting one are not the same thing. The primary sidebar takeaway from Cohen's testimony was based on a poorly worded tweet that the author, Ron Filipkowski, deleted. “Cohen testified that his main media contacts to get positive stories run about Trump were Maggie Haberman, Katy Tur, and Chris Cuomo." Except Cohen DIDN'T say that. He was asked if he had good relationships with reporters. Haberman? "Yes," he replied. Tur? "Yes." Cuomo? "Yes." I am thus in the position of defending - in part - the transactional Haberman, my appalling ex, and the ridiculous Cuomo. Having said that, they are all imperiled because of what Cohen DID say. Plus we have a really great punchline to the day in the courtroom in which a would-be Trump Insurrectionist learned that loyalty to him is a one-way street, even if the only thing you wanted was a wave. B-Block (29:43) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Exactly what American journalism needed: Chris Cillizza has authored a "Mission Statement." It is even more hilariously self-unaware than any actual article he's ever written. C-Block (51:44) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: A lot in this episode about the media, so let's hear from Thurber and how they tried to turn him into a radio star and instead turned him into a nervous wreck: "How To Relax While Broadcasting."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Overlooked in the campus protests is the witch-trial hearings by MAGA Mike Johnson's House that bullied university presidents and scrutinized their federal funding, pressuring them, as Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton famously wrote in the Newspaper of Power, to “send in the troops.” Ultimately, the responsiblity falls on campus leadership, with several schools, like Rutgers University and Northwestern University, choosing a peaceful approach, reminding us that another world, free of police brutality, is possible. Following the anniversary of the Kent State massacre on May 4th, Gaslit Nation looks at the campus protests, reminding everyone that peaceful protest and civil disobedience won hard-fought progress in America's history. Biden recently stopped a shipment of arms to Israel, thanks to the growing pressure. We also check-in on the coup, out in the open, against our democracy, with Rudy Giuliani trying once again to exhort Ukraine to invent dirt on Biden. This is what led to Trump's first impeachment. He's back at it, because Giuliani, along with all the rest of the coup plotters, were never punished. February 20 marks two years since Putin launched his total war in Ukraine. February also marks the assassination of Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, gunned down in the shadow of the Kremlin in 2015, on the eve of his anti-war march. And now Alexei Navalny, killed in a Siberian gulag, his body reportedly covered in bruises and kept from his family. It may seem like Putin is winning, with Trump sailing into the Republican nomination, and MAGA lackey Mike Johnson deliberately stopping aid to Ukraine in Congress, costing countless lives and helping Russia advance. And the breaking news this week: Republicans in Congress based their impeachment proceeding of Biden on a Russian intelligence op, pulling out all the stops to help Trump steal the White House with the Kremlin's help, again. One thing is clear: Putin is scared. The reality is that Putin's fragile house of cards has turned Russia into a powder keg, as Navalny's widow, Yulia Navalnaya, vows to continue her husband's work. In this special episode, Andrea and Terrell Starr of the Black Diplomats Podcast and Substack discuss the assassintion of Navalny and the work ahead to build a meaningful opposition, the mainstream media continuing to normalize Trump by labeling his 16-week abortion ban as “less restrictive”, and the triumph of Black prosecutors Tish James and Fani Willis in the larger American story of hard-fought progress. Welcome to this Gaslit Nation Emergency Bonus Episode, to cover Walter Duranty's latest interview with Stalin, as he carries out a genocide. That was over ninety years ago. Today history repeats, with Tucker Carlson releasing a two-hour rant by Putin, presenting what Kellyanne Conway once lovingly referred to as “alternative facts.” Gaslit Nation has the fact-check for you here, and explains why Tucker Carlson, in his traitors paradise in Moscow, visiting Tara Reade, should be investigated for being an unregistered foreign agent. The Dominion lawsuit against Fox News essentially established that Tucker Carlson is not a journalist, and therefore must be investigated for furthering the Kremlin's agenda. Like longtime Kremlin operative Paul Manafort who he tried to rehabilitate on his Fox News show, Tucker Carlson reeks of FARA (Foreign Agents Registration Act). According to Anton Gerashchenko, a former member of Ukraine's parliament who has served in various government roles, Russian telegram channels expressed frustration in the Kremlin over Putin and Tucker's love-in. (Putin sounded like one of those rambling email forwards about Barack HUSSEIN Obama, but the anti-Ukrainian version.) Those reports mention that Tucker was paid a fee. If that's the case, then he needs to report that and any other perks he received from a foreign adversary. If he doesn't disclose if and what he was paid for his Kremlin interview, he should face a FARA investigation by the DOJ (Wake up, Merrick Garland!), and an investigation by Democrats in the Senate. Amazingly, this week the Mr. Jones' graphic novel adaptation, In the Shadow of Stalin, was announced by Oni Press – read more about that in the show notes below. The graphic novel includes deleted scenes from the film. A sneak peak of the pages can be seen here: https://aiptcomics.com/2024/02/07/in-the-shadow-of-stalin-the-story-of-mr-jones/ For historical context of Tucker Carlson's dangerous Putin interview, watch Mr. Jones or read In the Shadow of Stalin, out September 4th, and available for pre-order now. It's a government shutdown by another name! Accused sex trafficker, proud January 6 insurrectionist, and Kremlin shill Matt Gaetz makes Russian state TV gleeful by leading the Kremlin Kaos Kaucus (KKK) by blocking much-needed aid to Ukraine and overthrowing Kevin McCarthy as speaker for trying to do a Ukraine deal with the Democrats. You may remember McCarthy as that guy who admitted Putin pays Trump, yet went on to support him and his MAGA death cult, earning his place in history as the first speaker to be ousted. Gaetz's Kremlin disinformation antics are part of a larger operation serving the Republican Party's dark money backers that include dirty Russian-linked financing that helped elect George Santos, the Koch political network that wants to drop sanctions against Russia to protect their profits, and the PayPal mafia like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel that deliberately destroyed Twitter, an organizing space for activists and journalists, in a unified bid to weaken American democracy and usher in dictatorship. Yes, this is all happening, and none of it is normal. The KKK in Congress makes America look like an unreliable ally and demoralizes Ukrainians fighting and giving their lives to stop Russian imperial fascism. When they scream on the House floor about the national debt, what they really mean is protecting their corporate backers' record profits, historically and criminally low taxes, and wealth hoarding at the expense of the public good. This is Reagan's Revolution ideologically aligned with Putin's court of oligarchs: Greed is good and the firehose of corruption and scandal ensures they live above the law. As history shows, our courts are the anecdote when Congress is gridlocked. Unfortunately, Biden's judicial appointments were stalled this year as Senator Dianne Feinstein and her enablers refused to let her retire with dignity, tarnishing her legacy by slowing down Biden's appointments for months. If people weren't getting rich off of Washington being broken, it would have been fixed by now. The great Heather Cox Richardson, historian and author of the latest must-read book Democracy Awakening: Notes on the State of America, stops by Gaslit Nation to give us insight on how we got here and what to do about this dangerous crossroads in our nation's history. Needless to say Andrea and Heather geek out over Ulysses S. Grant! This week's bonus episode will include a livestream on Patreon and on Instagram (to help wean us off of Twitter – the largest Russian disinformation outlet in the world, according to the European Union). That will take place on Thursday at 4pm ET – Patreon subscribers should look out for a link posted shortly before we go live, or join for free on Instagram. Rundown - Jane Feldman in the Inner Sanctum of Craig's Lawyers' Lounge - 49:25 Troubadour Dave Gunders - 01:53:58 "When I Die" by Dave Gunders - 02:08:44 Sordid Lauren Boebert incident at the Denver theater is thoroughly reviewed. So is the reaction by members of the Colorado and national media. Remember how Boebert went on Caplis Show to unveil bogus October 2022 surprise claiming her opponent had adulterous sex in a storage trailer in Aspen, a claim later discredited. We do. We've got the sound of Caplis' reacting to the Boebert incident this week where he goes after the media for letting Dems like Polis and Biden get away with worse. The double standard is real and we use sound to show where it actually exists - on conservative media. Kyle Clark is part of this soundbite story. Listen to Boebert reading a Caplis-approved script and flubbing it badly. Abortion opposition is a prop for BoBo and many of her fellow travelers, but it works to get some people on her side. And that's all it takes. https://twitter.com/RonFilipkowski/status/1705009115049648439 On the eve of Yom Kippur and G-d knows what else, we bring you both a spiritual and prosecution oriented show. Being Jewish may seem obvious if your name is Feldman, but there's always a little more to the story. The Feldmans were connected to the upper echelon of Manhattan politics. Jane Feldman's father was a prominent NYC attorney close to the famous Morgenthaus, the most prominent Jewish family in American politics for years. We do a lot of name-dropping, including Kennedys, Roosevelts and celebrities Jane Feldman knew growing up in NY. Jane went on to be a prosecutor for the NYC DA's Office where she served 8+ years. Jane Feldman also worked as Assistant AG in Colorado. She's in her fifth decade of legal practice now, meaning she enters the INNER SANCTUM reserved for Craig's Act Five Attorneys, now in their fifth decade of practice. Such lawyers are fearless and opinionated. Jane comes through. An outspoken MAGA critic, Jane is known by Congressman Joe Neguse and others as a great sharp-tongued, fact-checker of MAGA on social media. Feldman calls out conservative disinformation and stands up against Jew haters. We talk about MAGA and bigotry – and how best to react as lawyers. We analyze the various Trump trials and tribulations. This drama has many NYC components such as Trump and Rudy Giuliani. Go behind the scenes with this NYC connected guest with sharp analytical and prosecutorial skills. Jane Feldman is wise. Show Troubadour Dave Gunders is great at contemplating the big issues that go with Yom Kippur. It is the day Jews confront their mortality. Gunders does that straight on with his amazing song titled, "When I Die." Is it metaphorical or literal when he says he wants to be laid down in the muddy water of the Mississippi? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbfXJaVSCrI
