Ryan Murken and Rob Howe discuss Solon, West Branch and Liberty boys basketball along with West Branch and Iowa City West girls at the state tournament.
How does one person play at a high level in two different collegiate sports? It does seem a bit impossible, but Connor McCaffery is making it work. Connor would pack gyms and ballparks all over Iowa, especially Dubuque so people could get a glimpse of his game. Connor stared in two sports during his time at Iowa City West, but what sport would he play in college? Well Connor selected to play both baseball and basketball for the University of Iowa. Connor goes into great depth on how he, his coaches, and family make it work. Connor also shares his work with the University of Iowa and the Big Ten Conference in bringing awareness to social injustices that plague our community. This is one podcast you will not want to miss. The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman sat down with Kirk Ferentz and had a one-on-one interview after his July 30 news conference on the review of his program for racial disparities and mistreatment of players. This is called “pole position,” and the On Iowa Podcast soaked in it. This discussion is the first part of the podcast. Obviously, it’s an ongoing situation. The conclusion is that there really is no conclusion. This is going to have to be an ongoing period of self-reflection for everyone who cares about Iowa football. The Big Ten released its 2020 football schedule this week. We’re at 50/50 on if the season begins Sept. 5. There will be a season. Too many people are committed to it. What kind of season? Well, the opt-outs are coming in heavy for the Big Ten. During our podcast, news broke that former Iowa City West prep Oliver Martin is in the transfer portal. Everyone, try to be cool here. Martin just happened to transfer into the best Iowa wide receiving corps since the Hayden Fry days or maybe ever. (We think very highly of the Hawkeyes’ wide receivers. The top four is … this is a better overall receiving corps than when Iowa had Tim Dwight.) It’s a longie (about two hours). Thanks for listening!

Here’s a little 2-hour podcast to break the ice of the horse latitudes, you know, that part of the summer where there’s not a whole lot going on in football. There was a little going on in Iowa football last week. Lots of kickoff times trickled out. Marc Morehouse and Scott Dochterman talk about the times and the teams. We’ve been doing various posts on Iowa’s 2019 schedule, so we brought that to the podcast. We ranked the Big Ten West as far as favorites. We talk Iowa wide receiver. The Hawkeyes added former Iowa City West star Oliver Martin, Buffalo WR/Illinois native Charlie Jones and Central Michigan’s Jack Combs. Combs will be eligible this year as a walk-on. Don’t count on Martin and Jones gaining eligibility. Just be pleasantly surprised if it happens. Bottom line is we’ll see if it works. We answered a ton of Twitter questions. It’s probably time to hire a Twitter questions editor. Maybe shave that to the five best. I don’t know. The podcast constantly evolves, kind of like football. We’ll probably talk to everyone again in a couple of weeks.
We preview the upcoming High School State Finals across all classes for the boys featuring Iowa City Regina vs. Waterloo Columbus Catholic in 1A, Cedar Rapids Xavier vs. Council Bluffs-Lewis Central in 2A and Waukee vs. Iowa City West in 3A.
