In an explosive showdown at the Sugar Bowl, the Washington Huskies unleashed their high-powered offense, igniting the field with energy as they triumphed over Texas in a heart-pounding 37-31 victory. Now, with adrenaline pumping, they gear up for a sensational clash with Michigan in the College Football Playoff national championship game. Michael Penix Jr., narrowly missing out on the Heisman Trophy, set the stage ablaze in the semifinal with a dazzling performance, completing 29 of 38 passes for a staggering 430 yards and two jaw-dropping touchdowns. The receiving squad, fueled by sheer intensity, delivered standout performances, with Rome Odunze racking up 125 explosive yards on six catches and Ja'Lynn Polk electrifying the crowd with five catches for 122 yards, including a spectacular touchdown. This triumph not only marks Washington's inaugural College Football Playoff victory but also serves as a redemption anthem for their heart-wrenching 2016 semifinal defeat, thrusting them into the uncharted territory of a historic national championship. Texas, amidst a rollercoaster third quarter with a mere 34 yards, rallied fiercely in the fourth, creating an edge-of-the-seat spectacle. Falling agonizingly short by just 12 yards in the final play, the Longhorns left every ounce of energy on the field in their pursuit of an equalizer. The national championship showdown promises an explosion of excitement as Washington goes head-to-head with the undefeated Michigan, who carved out a thrilling victory over Alabama in the Rose Bowl. The clash on Monday at NRG Stadium in Houston is set to be a pulse-pounding duel between two future Big Ten rivals, adding a dramatic twist – Washington's last national championship came after toppling Michigan in the Rose Bowl. In the electrifying final moments, the Longhorns charged to the Washington 13-yard line, but the scoreboard stood firm as they missed the opportunity to light up the score. Locked On Huskies - Daily Podcast on Washington Huskies Football & Basketball
The Washington Huskies are looking to add a few final pieces to the class of 2024 before the early signing period opens on December 20th. One recruit who is looking for a new home is Calabasas 4-star wide receiver Aaron Butler, who de-committed from Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes over the weekend, and it appears Kalen DeBoer's coaching staff is pushing hard to land the services of the nation's 88th overall player and how he could fill the shoes of wide receivers Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan, and Ja'Lynn Polk who all could be heading to the NFL Draft. Locked On Huskies hosts Roman Tomashoff and Lars Hanson also discuss what DeBoer's staff is doing along the defensive line, discussing 4-star commit Dominic Kirks, and 4-star defensive tackle Jericho Johnson who hasn't yet chosen a school. The hosts also discuss coach Mike Hopkins and Washington basketball's big win over the No. 7 Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday night. Locked On Huskies is part of the Locked On Podcast Network. The 13-0 Washington Huskies wouldn't be where they are without quarterback Michael Penix Jr., however, the #2 team in the country's quarterback was not named the offensive player of the year in the Pac-12 or even to the All Pac-12 First Team. Penix isn't alone in getting snubbed either, as offensive tackle Roger Rosengarten and wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk, who also had phenomenal seasons, seemed to be left off awards lists. Locked On Huskies hosts Roman Tomashoff and Lars Hanson discuss how this might affect Penix's shot at the Heisman Trophy, and also spend some time dissecting one of the touchiest debates among Washington fans right now, in-state recruiting. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - had plenty to say after Washington's 42-33 win over Stanford Saturday afternoon at Stanford Stadium. And the first thing they talked about was the atmosphere at the stadium - or lack of atmosphere. The announced attendance was around a little over 24,000 fans, but it felt like closer to half that number. And maybe half of THAT number were wearing Purple and Gold. The Huskies not only had to bring their own energy to the mix - which was difficult to do as many on the team were suffering from cold/flu symptoms, including quarterback Michael Penix Jr. - but they also had to do it down a number of key players. They did get Germie Bernard back, but Jalen McMillan once again wasn't able to get fully back in the mix. Julius Buelow did make his return, and the right guard started the game, which meant Parker Brailsford started at center. On defense, the injuries were even more prominent. Tuli Letuligasenoa was at the game and suited but did not play. And the Huskies were down three safeties - Asa Turner, Kamren Fabiculanan, and Vincent Nunley - so Makell Esteen made his first career start. Despite never trailing in the game, it always felt like the Cardinal were breathing down Washington's neck. Up 21-7 with 5 minutes left before halftime, Stanford was able to hit two field goals to bring the margin down to a single score. UW's offense rarely saw the field the first half, as Stanford had the ball for over 21 minutes. The guys talked about the Cardinal targeting the defensive backs, specifically Esteen and cornerback Jabbar Muhammad, questionable pass interference calls on both sides, and the glaring lack of holding calls made (again). After a quick break the guys turned to the other side of the ball, where the Huskies found a little more of the ball and also some timely plays - including a 92-yard pass from Penix to Ja'Lynn Polk for six. But two red zone turnovers in the fourth quarter made the game a lot closer than UW fans would have wanted, and the guys talked about the hit-and-miss nature of how the offense was as a whole, especially the receivers. And then there was even more talk about penalties, as both teams were hit with costly personal foul calls at various points that stalled drives. Before they close things out, Kim, Chris, and Scott give their final thoughts as the Huskies now get set to take another road trip - this time to USC - and the first College Football Playoff rankings come out on Halloween. How much credit will the Huskies get for being one of five Power-5 teams to stay unbeaten so far? Join Locked On Huskies hosts Roman Tomashoff and Lars Hanson as they break down what they saw in a... less than stellar performance from the Huskies. However, Michael Penix Jr. had a good day, Rome Odunze and Ja'Lynn Polk made some impressive grabs, but the Huskies still have a lot of things to work on. Dawgman.com's Kim Grinolds spoke this week with Stanford 247's Jackson Moore, who updated us on what's going on at the Farm with the Stanford Cardinal and the transition from David Shaw to Troy Taylor. Washington fans will remember Taylor as Jake Browning's head coach at Folsom High School. What were the preseason expectations for the Cardinal and have they matched what has taken place on the football field so far? Kim and Jackson start on the offensive side of the ball, talking about the personnel UW fans will see Saturday afternoon, as well as the style of offense Taylor wants to run. And then they turn to the other side of the ball. Can the Cardinal defense contain Michael Penix Jr., Rome Odunze, Ja'Lynn Polk and Washington's offense? And if they can match up, who are the Stanford players that can help them get the job done? And when it comes to penalties, Washington may have met their match with the Cardinal - as both average at least seven flags per game. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - once again get up bright and early Saturday to offer their insight and analysis into tonight's California-Washington game, as the Huskies and Golden Bears play the first game of what is now the final season of the Pac-12 in its current form. But before they delve into the matchups between Cal and UW on both sides of the ball, they briefly go back and look at what the Huskies did to Michigan State last weekend in East Lansing, including a quick injury update and an overall look at the experience of traveling to Big Ten country with more road trips that direction starting in 2024. Then the Cal talk starts, beginning with how the Golden Bears look on offense. They have two quality running backs in Jaydn Ott and Isaiah Ifanse and two quarterbacks in Sam Jackson V and Ben Finley, but how will they be used? And how does Jake Spavital's offense look at Cal now compared to when he was running it when Sonny Dykes was the Golden Bears' head coach? After a quick break to pay some bills, the guys turn the tables and wonder how Cal is going to stop Washington's ridiculously prodigious offense, led by Michael Penix Jr., Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan, Ja'Lynn Polk, and Jack Westover. They also offer up a little mention to just how jam-packed this weekend is out west for quality football. The Pac-12 has three games where both teams are ranked in the top-25 (UCLA-Utah, Oregon State-Washington State, and Colorado-Oregon), and five of their six games feature at least one team in the top-25, including California at No. 8 Washington. Scott also provides a quick recruiting update, including an official visitor in town for the 2024 recruiting class, and Kim talks about the three 2025 recruits that are also checking out UW on their official visits, before offering up their final thoughts on the Cal-UW game. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - did their best to put into context just how dominant the Washington Huskies were in their 41-7 win at Michigan State Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium. For a top-10 team, it felt like there were a lot of obstacles in their way pre-game; first road test of the season, playing on grass (which has never been a thing the Huskies have done well with), and everything that was going on with the Michigan State program. The Spartans had suspended their head coach, Mel Tucker, and brought back former head coach Mark Dantonio to help first-time head coach Harlon Barnett. Would Michigan State rally around their long-time assistant and former head coach? Would they play like their backs were to the wall and the world was against them? Nope. As it turned out, the home team withered at the first offensive foray by Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and his cadre of impressive receivers - Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan, and Ja'Lynn Polk - and the Huskies never looked back. To start, Kim - calling in from East Lansing - set the pre-game scene. He was impressed with Spartan Stadium and how they do things there. The guys also talked about all of the injury issues Washington was dealing with too; their starting safety (Asa Turner) and starting center (Matteo Mele) were out, and then we found out during warmups that another safety, Kamren Fabiculanan, would be out as well. And during the game, McMillan got banged up and left guard Julius Buelow was also hurt. But with all the walking wounded, the Huskies never flinched and actually took the game to their hosts. The guys rolled through how thoroughly dominant the UW offense was, as they threw for a school-record 536 yards and 713 total yards - second-highest number in school history and the most ever gained against Michigan State in their program's history. After a quick break, the talk turned to the defense and how the Huskies were able to hold Michigan State to only 53 yards on the ground. Zion Tupuola-Fetui sacked MSU QB Noah Kim twice and 24 defensive players were credited with at least one tackle in the game. The guys finish it up with their final thoughts on the game and what it means for the Huskies as they continue to push forward in search of their first Pac-12 Championship in five years. The Washington Huskies dismantled the Boise State Broncos behind five passing touchdowns from Heisman candidate Michael Penix Jr. and three touchdowns from wide receiver Jalen McMillan. Rome Odunze and Ja'Lynn Polk both pulled in over 100 receiving yards and cornerback Davon Banks had his best game in a Husky uniform. Washington's offense lived up to its top 10 ranking, but there are still questions to be answered on the defensive side of the ball. The Dawgman interns - Jack McCauley and Intern Emeritus Luke Mounger - are back with their own spin on how the Washington Huskies will do in 2023, and they are going to break down a number of the position groups. Today they break down the receivers room, arguably the most talented single room in the entire Pac-12. But before they talk about the players in the room, they offer their postscript to those who have left; Lonyatta Alexander, Jabez Tinae, and Taj Davis. But with Denzel Boston and Germie Bernard on the 'come up' (as the kids would say), the losses should be mitigated as addition through subtraction. Then Jack and Luke break down the three freshmen that are currently going through fall camp - Keith Reynolds, Taeshaun Lyons, and Rashid Williams - and give their thoughts on whether they'll redshirt or not, and if there is one player that won't be redshirting, who would it be? And before they take a quick commercial break, Jack and Luke then go back to the two main takers in the room - Rome Odunze and Jalen McMillan. After the break, Luke gives credit to Washington's Recivers Coach JaMarcus Shephard when it comes to managing the personalities in the room, as well as the high level of expectations and accountability. Going back to the players in the room, Jack and Luke talk about Giles Jackson and Ja'Lynn Polk and how they can add their individual talents to the benefit of the whole. The guys' final thoughts include their expectations for the room in terms of production for the 2023 season with a revamped roster and the improvement from year one to year two in Shephard's room and Ryan Grubb's offense. The Washington Huskies took the field for their first day of fall camp under sunny skies and 70 degree temps. The guys from Dawgman.com were there and following the two-hour practice, they sat down to put a bow on what they saw. They discussed how efficient the offense looked and how Michael Penix Jr. looked like he was in mid-season form. Following that, they took a look at the tailbacks and discussed the battle between Cameron Davis, Dillon Johnson, Will Nixon, Sam Adams, Daniyel Ngata and Tybo Rogers and who looks like the most-ready to take over for Wayne Taulapapa. Johnson was getting his first significant reps since arriving in the spring. He definitely looks the part, but two of the guys felt that Davis had set himself apart from the rest and is the clear favorite to start at the tailback position. They then turned their attention to the wide receiver group and discussed how players like Germie Bernard and Denzel Boston would likely be starting at several programs in the country, but both are likely to see limited targets this fall with Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan and Ja'Lynn Polk demanding a lot of attention. Throw in three talented freshmen and the Huskies are in great shape for the forseeable future in the receiver corps. Moving over to the defensive side of the ball, the guys talked about the move of Voi Tunuufi to EDGE and how he looked along with the rest of the room, including Bralen Trice and Zion Tupuola-Fetui, Lance Holtzclaw and Milton Hopkins Jr. They also looked at the depth along the defensive line and linebacker and gave an early look at the secondary where Elijah Jackson and Jabbar Muhammad look to be the leading candidates to man the corner spots once the season gets underway in September. Now that spring ball has concluded, it's time to look back at what we saw during the 15 practices, looking in-depth at each position group. Today, the guys from Dawgman -- Kim Grinolds and Scott Eklund -- take a look at the wide receiver group. Following a record-setting season, Washington's first with two 1,000 yard receivers, the Husky wideout group is widely considered to be one of the best and deepest rooms in the entire country. In fact, aside from Ohio State, which features at least five future NFL Draft first rounders on their receiver depth chart, there may not be a deeper receiver corps in the entire country. First thing the guys talk about is what makes Rome Odunze and Jalen McMillan so good. Part of it is their rapport with Michael Penix Jr., but they are versatile playmakers who can do whatever is asked of them. Position coach JaMarcus Shephard has lauded their work-ethic as well as they playmaking abilities and both are considered to be two of the top receivers in the entire nation. The scary thing is, players like Ja'Lynn Polk is rarely mentioned as being a key factor by those in the national media, but those close to the program understand how valuable he is to Washington's offense. The guys talk about what it is that he does best and whether or not they believe he will wind up playing for the Huskies in 2024 or whether he will move on to the NFL. Throw in players like Denzel Boston and Germie Bernard, two second-year players who could start on quite a few Power Five teams, as well as Giles Jackson and Taj Davis, two role players who could play key roles this fall, and Washington is poised to have a very explosive passing offense this fall. That's not even mentioning the three incoming wide receivers -- Rashid Williams, Taeshaun Lyons and Keith Reynolds -- all of whom will likely redshirt this season and you can see why everyone is so bullish on the Dawg offense this year. In the second hour, Dave Softy Mahler and Dick Fain chat with Corey Brock of The Athletic about all things Seattle Mariners, then they visit with Washington Huskies wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk about the season starting soon before reacting to some texts.
Washington Huskies wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk joins Dave Softy Mahler and Dick Fain to talk about the season starting soon and being in camp right now, the wide receiver room this season, the quarterback situation, coming from Texas and transferring here.
The guys from Dawgman.com - Chris Fetters and Scott Eklund - wrapped up the week of practice as Washington readies their team to open things up to the media and fans on Saturday at Husky Stadium. But Friday we learned that there was a catch; what we thought would be a scrimmage Saturday will actually just be a full 2-hour practice. The scrimmage actually happened today, roughly 75-80 plays according to UW Head Coach Kalen DeBoer. The guys broke down some of DeBoer's comments, first starting with some of the position groups that have stood out to him. He mentioned right off the bat how disruptive the EDGE players have been. So does that mean they've been killing it, or are they taking advantage of some of the offensive linemen put in newer positions, like Troy Fautanu and Matteo Mele? DeBoer singled out Fautanu for his consistency all spring, so it's likely the fact that the first four EDGE players are simply playing at a high level. When the talk moved over to the other side of the ball, we ended up devolving the conversation to the point where we came up with a possible spring conclusion; Corey Luciano might be the only player leaving April confident knowing where he's going to start fall camp. The conversation got very interesting, so check it out! After a quick break to pay off some debts, the talk turned to the receivers group, where DeBoer singled out Ja'Lynn Polk for his work Friday helping to move the chains. Could the former Texas Tech player become that key possession guy that Washington has been missing for a while? And then the conversation moved to the running backs room, where the talk all spring hasn't been great. With so many players out hurt and unavailable to play, DeBoer was asked about what motivated the staff to go out and sign three running back transfers? He noted the health issues, as well as their need to have versatile body types at the position. Could it be that the running backs we haven't seen this spring (Richard Newton, Cameron Davis, Emeka Megwa) won't become a factor at all this fall? And how far behind have Caleb Berry and Sam Adams lagged due to missing a fair bit of spring themselves, either through illness or not being 100 percent healthy? The running back room is struggling right now, and there's no doubt Aaron Dumas and Jay'Veon Sunday are benefiting from that struggle. But it feels like we're going to have to wait until August to see just how things will shake out once Wayne Taulapapa and Will Nixon arrive. Part of the running back conversation involves the idea of attrition, how NIL can now impact the idea of a player leaving to go into the portal or not, and how that can impact things especially when a new staff is trying to instill their own culture and way of doing things. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - wrap up their thoughts now that the Washington Huskies are 10 April practices in. With only 15 practices in total, that means the Dawgs are now two-thirds of the way through spring ball. Where did the time go? Starting with the quarterback competition, the guys talk about who they think is leading the pack, as well as how they expect things could shake out as the battle continues to be joined. They also talk about the running backs. For a position that has seen very little go on from the media standpoint, there certainly has been a ton of player movement. Emeka Megwa has been out all of spring, and Caleb Berry has just started to come back. Cameron Davis and Richard Newton have not been practicing either, so at this point the only scholarship running backs that have played spring at 100 percent health are New Mexico transfer Aaron Dumas, and Jay'Veon Sunday. The guys got a chance to speak with both UW OC Ryan Grubb and RB Coach Lee Marks to break down what they see in the two incoming transfer running backs; Virginia's Wayne Taulapapa and Nebraska's Will Nixon. Clearly with three transfer running backs in before the start of the 2022 season, an already loaded room will undoubtedly suffer attrition of some sort. What the numbers will be and who those players are is anyone's guess at this point. Chris broke down who he saw playing with the two-deeps on defense during the limited 11-11 session the media gets to see, and with a few players that weren't spotted in there, like Jordan Perryman and Carson Bruener (both were practicing), it's hard to know if they are still cycling players through to get turns put on film, or if there's something else going on. After a quick break to pay some bills, the talk turned to recruiting and who was at practice today. The Huskies also had a couple of draft hopefuls on hand in Cade Otton and Luke Wattenberg. The guys also provide some insight into some of the interviews they did post-practice. Not only did they speak to Grubb and Marks, but they also talked with Dylan Morris, Ja'Lynn Polk, Roger Rosengarten, Troy Fautanu, and others. A quick hoops update was followed by the guys' final thoughts on the day and also how things are wrapping on what has been a very quick April. Only five practices left, UW fans, including a scrimmage this Saturday at 11 am that is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Be there! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Day five of Washington's 2021 fall camp was marked by an uptick in the intensity on the field. With a lot of redzone work, things got a bit chipping and there definitely was some chirping going on between the Husky offense and defense. The guys from Dawgman -- Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters and Scott Eklund -- were on hand and discussed what they saw. They touched on some of the skirmishes from the practices and there was a player in the middle of things that we've seen in some tussles already in camp -- freshman defensive back Jacobe Covington. The Arizona native got into things on Monday with tailback Jay'Veon Sunday and on Tuesday he and wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk got into an altercation that led to the latter's helmet wind up on the ground. When the team actually decided to play some football, it was a give and take between the offense and defense with the stop unit probably "winning" the day as they posted three interceptions and generally were tough on the offense. With officials on hand for the first time in camp, there were definitely some flags thrown, but overall, it was a relatively clean day. Julius Irvin leaped to intercept and pass from Sam Huard that was intended for Taj Davis in the back of the endzone while Brendan Radley-Hiles made a spectacular interception at the goal line he tipped to himself from the freshman that was intended for a receiver. Not to be outdone, Makell Esteen made the most of his opportunity to bring in an interception. Dylan Morris, who on the previous play had found wideout Terrell Bynum for a touchdown, tried to fit in a pass to tight end Cade Otton, but the pass sailed a bit and Otton got his hand on the ball, knocking it up in the air and allowing Esteen an easy move to make the play. Overall, the guys had a lot to talk about and shared their thoughts on what they saw. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Despite the absence of left tackle Jaxson Kirkland, the Washington offense was able to make their adjustments from a tough Sunday workout to impose themselves a little bit more on Day Four of fall camp. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - talked about the bounce-back effort from the offense, including a great drive during the field team period, led by Dylan Morris, that ended up with a 5-yard touchdown to a wide-open Cade Otton. Richard Newton and Cameron Davis were the two running backs used in that series, but all the of backs had turns Monday to impress. The Dawgman guys talked about the offensive line shuffle due to Kirkland's absence (doesn't sound like anything serious), and how Troy Fautanu did as the number-one left tackle, followed by freshman Roger Rosengarten backing him up. They also talked about the improvement of the receivers from Sunday, and who is starting to make some waves behind the first team, including Sawyer Racanelli, Taj Davis, Ja'Lynn Polk, and Giles Jackson, who caught a 27-yard pass from Patrick O'Brien. Moving to the defensive side, it was all about mixing and matching some position groups, especially at outside linebacker. Cooper McDonald was paired with Bralen Trice, Ryan Bowman and Sav'ell Smalls were matched together, and Jordan Lolohea and Jeremiah Martin also made up a pairing that OLB Coach Ikaika Malloe used to great effect on Monday. True frosh Voi Tunuufi had a tackle for loss during the final team period, and we also saw more three-DL sets with Tuli Letuligasenoa, Sam Taimani, and Faatui Tuitele involved. Generally, there was a lot of back and forth during the final team period. There was just the one touchdown throw to Otton from Morris, and only one interception, which came from Dominique Hampton, who got shaken up on the play but still came up with the ball.
